BlackBerry Passport, Classic coming to AT&T this Friday

BlackBerry's two newest smartphones, the Passport 75 and Classic 70 , will be available on AT&T starting February 20. Both devices have already been available online for some time, but AT&T is the first US carrier to pick them up.
AT&T will be offering the Passport exclusively, which will retail for $200 under a two-year contract and $650 without a contract. The device has been redesigned for the carrier -- it features round edges instead of the sharp corners that the original device sports.
Aside from that change, the device is similar to the original Passport, which was launched in September and sports a 2.2GHZ quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 4.5-inch square display, full QWERTY keyboard, 13-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front camera, and 32 GB of storage.
The business-oriented BlackBerry Classic that was launched in December will also become available at AT&T online and retail stores beginning this Friday. The Classic sports a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor, a 3.5-inch touchscreen display, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, 2MP front- and 8MP rear-facing camera, as well as Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The smartphone will cost $50 with a two-year contract and $420 without a contract.
Both devices will also be available through the carrier's Next financing plan.

    Blackberry hits iPhone keyboard

    Idea nicked

BlackBerry has increased it's the pressure on the Chinese burn it is giving Ryan Seacrest's Typo Products.

Blackberry filed a new complaint that alleges that the company's new keyboard case for the iPhone also infringes on its patents.
Last March, the Waterloo, Ontario-based smartphone pioneer won an injunction against the first iteration of the Typo case made for some of Apple's iPhone devices. BlackBerry is now seeking another injunction to halt sales of the redesigned Typo 2 case as well.
In a new complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California Blackberry claims that the Typo 2 case for the iPhone 5, 5s and iPhone 6 models, also infringe on its patents.
Earlier this month, the court ordered Typo to pay BlackBerry $860,600 in sanctions, plus attorneys' fees and costs as it said that Typo had blatantly violated the court's initial injunction.
Typo said the court order had no impact on its TYPO 2 product in the marketplace, or its other planned product releases.
"Just as they did with the Typo Keyboard, defendants have again copied numerous proprietary BlackBerry designs and patents in the Typo2 Keyboard," said BlackBerry in its complaint.

BlackBerry expanding software products for Apple iOS, Google Android

BlackBerry is transitioning focus from smartphone hardware more towards software, building business partnerships with Apple and Google. The struggling manufacturer wants to develop business applications able to run on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. It's not a surprise BlackBerry wants to create enterprise products for other platforms, after its hardware efforts slid over the past few years.

"I have a lot of software assets that are really good," said BlackBerry CEO John Chen, when speaking with Bloomberg. "We're going to build a business on putting it on other peoples' devices. As our market share in hardware is shrinking, I think there's a much bigger opportunity to make our software and package it correctly to be available on cross platforms."

Since becoming CEO in November 2013, Chen has looked for strategies to expand BlackBerry's product offerings. The company's smartphone market share has dropped below 1 percent, as Apple, Samsung, and other manufacturers fight for control.

BlackBerry Teases 'Dual Curved' Slider BB10 Smartphone And Announces $275 'Leap'

BlackBerry is taking aim at young mobile professional types with its newly unveiled Leap smartphone for 4G LTE networks. It's an all-touch handset (read: no physical keyboard) sporting a "modern and powerful design" and an edge-to-edge 5-inch HD (1280x720; 294 pixels per inch) display. The device will replace the Z3 in BlackBerry's lineup.

"In today's mobile world – influenced by trends like BYOD – where personal and corporate data are frequently under attack from hackers, companies and everyday consumers are finding out the hard way that mobile security is paramount," said Ron Louks, President, Devices and Emerging Solutions. "BlackBerry Leap was built specifically for mobile professionals who see their smartphone device as a powerful and durable productivity tool that also safeguards sensitive communications at all times."

The Leap is powered by a Qualcomm MSM 8960 1.5GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. It also features 16GB of internal storage expandable via microSD, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, 2,800 mAh non-removable battery good for up to 25 hours of battery life, and BlackBerry 10 OS.

BlackBerry is expected to release the Leap in April for around $275. In the meantime, you can preregister on the product's website.

The Leap isn't the only device BlackBerry has up its sleeve. On Twitter, the company posted a picture of a phone with a dual-curved, all-touch display with a slider keyboard, seemingly offering BB fans the best of both worlds.

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, BlackBerry CEO John Chen told the media that the dual-curved device doesn't yet have a codename, but that "it will come sometime this year."

    Blackberry starts shipping phones again

    Looking before they leap
BlackBerry has announced a new mid-range handset, called Leap, and revealed an upcoming slider phone, which CEO John Chen referred to as “The Slider”.

Leap is not your normal BlackBerry it is all-touchscreen with no physical QWERTY keyboard. In other words the sort of designs have not helped BlackBerry at all. The Slider is more like something Blackberry might make.
BlackBerry says that it designed Leap to appeal to young professionals and companies that prioritize privacy and security, two of its core valus. The smartphone is designed to keep up with active users, being said to last 25 hours with heavy use. The price certainly reflects its mid-range ambitions, as it will cost $275 when it goes on sale in the following months. Europe will get it in April.
It will have a 5-inch display with a resolution of 720 by 1,280; 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor; 2 GB of RAM; 2,800 mAh battery; 8 MP main camera with 1080p video recording; 2 MP secondary camera; 16 GB of internal storage; microSD card slot which supports cards up to 128 GB in size; 4G LTE; Wi-Fi 802.11n; FM Radio; Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy; BlackBerry 10.3.1 OS; physical dimensions of 144 x 72.8 x 9.5 mm and weight of 170 grams.
Leap has all the typical BlackBerry 10.3.1 OS features, including the two app stores (BlackBerry’s own and Amazon’s Appstore), Blend and Link software, and much more. It remains to be seen whether its target market will be impressed by the software enough to buy it.
Details about the Slider are thin on the ground. It is codenamed Keian, after Keian Blundell, the son of a CrackBerry contributor who died and will feature a dual curve display, and is designed in collaboration with Porsche Design.
The Slider features a physical QWERTY keyboard and a pretty large touchscreen. Chen says it will ship later this year, without mentioning a specific release date.

BlackBerry Leap targets road warriors with 25 hours of battery life

BlackBerry is going after road warriors with its latest handset. The BlackBerry Leap, unveiled on Tuesday during Mobile World Congress, promises buyers up to 25 hours of battery life from a single charge.
With the Leap, the resilient Canadian handset maker is deviating away from the retro look and feel of the keyboard-laden Passport to something that’s a bit more modern with a large touchscreen. It offers a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 (294 PPI) that’s powered by a dated Qualcomm S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz and 2GB of RAM.
Elsewhere, users can expect 16GB of onboard storage that is expandable via microSD card slot, an 8-megapixel auto-focus camera around back, a 2-megapixel fixed-focus forward-facing camera and a 2,800mAh battery. Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, NFC, Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity all come standard. It will ship running BlackBerry 10.3.1.
Given the specs, this is clearly a mid-range phone and the price – $275 straight up – reflects that. BlackBerry says the phone is designed for young mobile professionals who value security and privacy in a modern and powerful design package.

While the Leap may be an “average” looking handset, another device it briefly shown off is anything but. Described by Engadget as the holy union between the Leap and the Passport, the unnamed handset carries a dual-curved, all-touch display with a keyboard. Or in other words, it’s a modern-day slider phone with a curved display similar to what’s found on the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Unfortunately, that’s all we know about this mysterious slider at this time.

Blackberry Announces the Global Release of Its Leap Smartphone

Blackberry’s physical QWERTY keyboard had a good run, but it looks like the company is focusing more and more on touchscreen-based designs. In 2013 and 2014, the brand released its Z3, Z30 and Z10 smartphones, which are now followed by the Blackberry Leap – a mid-range device aimed at “young power professionals.”
The smartphone was unveiled in Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress event, and it comes with a 5-inch edge-to-edge 720p IPS display as well as 2GB of RAM memory, 16GB of storage space and a MicroSD card slot. The CPU is a Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait paired with an Adreno 305 GPU, and even though it’s not exactly the most impressive, it packs enough power for basic apps. Equipped with the BlackBerry OS 10.3.1, the Leap is a breath of fresh air in an iOS and Android dominated market. Other highlights include an 8-megapixel rear camera as well as a 2,800mAh battery that can supposedly deliver 25 hours of heavy use before it needs a recharge.

Priced at about €277 or £199, the Blackberry Leap can currently be purchased from the brand’s UK online store. During the next few weeks, it will become available in countries such as Canada, U.S., France, Germany, India, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
What do you think about Blackberry’s newest smartphone?

Midrange BlackBerry Leap Now Available In The U.S. For $275 (Update: Hands-On Video)

Back at MWC, BlackBerry announced a new "all-touch" smartphone called the BlackBerry Leap, which was targeting mainly the mid range of the market with a $275 price tag. The device is now shipping in the U.S. and UK, and it will ship tomorrow to France and Germany, as well. The BlackBerry Leap comes with the latest BlackBerry 10.3.1 OS and a Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, which is rather dated even for today's mid-range processors, such as the 64-bit Cortex-A53-based chips. The device has a 5.0" screen and only a 720p resolution. That's too low-res for some users, but it should help increase the battery life of the device. It has a 2,800 mAh battery, which according to the company gives the smartphone up to 25 hours of juice under mixed usage.
Other specs include 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, support for microSD expansion up to 128 GB, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, FM radio, Miracast, DLNA, and GPS and GLONASS support. The phone also has an 8MP rear camera with an LED flash and a 2MP front camera. According to BlackBerry, despite the lack of a physical keyboard, the Leap still has a "best-in-class" software keyboard.

BlackBerry also added the "Blend" functionality to the Leap, which is a way to view the phone's contents on your PC. That includes access to the BlackBerry Hub, BBM, text messages, contacts, file manager, work browser, calendar and notifications.
The Leap supports not one, but two app stores: BlackBerry's own app store and Amazon's app store, which gives the device access to hundreds of thousands of Android apps. Not all Android apps will be there, but it includes some popular ones such as Pinterest, Candy Crush Saga, Cut the Rope 2, Kindle, SoundCloud and more.
BlackBerry also added "Device Guard" functionality, which is sort of an anti-virus that verifies the apps for known malware.
The Leap supports some strong encryption tools as well, although unfortunately, they can only be used by enterprise customers. These tools include:

    • Advanced Data at Rest Protection, which keeps data encrypted when not in use
    • PGP email for end-to-end encryption
    • Support for Kerberos authentication to retrieve public certificates for an LDAP directory for S/MIME
BlackBerry's new smartphone also comes with the Blackberry Assistant, which has deep integration into the BlackBerry Hub, Contacts and Calendar.
You can purchase the BlackBerry Leap for $275 in the U.S. from BlackBerry's store or from Amazon. The smartphone is also available in the UK for £199, France and Germany for €289 (shipping tomorrow), and is "coming soon" to Canada, India, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

    Blackberry to close in Sweden

    Sweden closes Blackberry office

Blackberry has decided to pull out of Sweden.

Since this may impact approximately 100 employees, Blackberry are now initiating consultations with the employees' trade unions
BlackBerry had about 7,000 people as of September 2014, according to its website. It is not clear what went wrong in Sweden which did not happen elsewhere in Europe.
Blackberry has not really survived the rise of the touch screen, although it remains popular within the security conscious government sector.

Three Upcoming BlackBerry Smartphones Including QWERTY 'Slider' Bare All In Freshly Leaked Photos

Fresh off posting a surprise profit amid sagging sales and lost customers, it looks as though BlackBerry is prepping at least three new phones for public consumption, pictures of which have been leaked to the web. One of the phones is the BlackBerry Oslo, a device that's been leaked to the web before, though none of the three have been officially announced.

Similar in style to the Passport, especially the version with rounded corners for AT&T's network, it's believed the Oslo will also feature similar hardware. Word on the web is that the Oslo will sport a square-shaped display with a 1440x1440 resolution, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Series SoC, 13-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front camera, 3,450mAh battery, and OS 10.3.2.

Second up to bat is the P'9984. As designated by the P' prefix, the P'9984 is a Porsche Design handset, meaning you can expect an extra bit of luxury in the construction. For example, the P'9981 from BlackBerry boasts a premium forged stainless steel frame, genuine leather backing, and a wide QWERTY keyboard. As for the P'9984, it's likely to be modeled after the Passport.

The third device a curved handset that's either going to be called BlackBerry Slider or BlackBerry Venice. If the leaked specs hold true, it will debut with a 5.1-inch 2560x1440 (QHD) display, an octa-core CPU, 16-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front camera, and front-facing speakers.

Parece que os BlackBerrys vão receber uma actualização ainda durante esta semana. Contínua a aposta nas aplicações Android através da Amazon Appstore, que na minha opinião a BlackBerry tinha muito a ganhar, se publicitasse isto mais.

If you own a BlackBerry 10 handset other than the BlackBerry Passport and the BlackBerry Classic, you will receiving an update to BlackBerry 10.3.2 some time over the next few weeks. The update includes the latest version of BlackBerry Blend. There is a new UI for Blend, put together using feedback from existing users.

With BlackBerry Protect, the update will allow users with a lost or stolen BlackBerry to disable the missing unit so that it cannot be wiped and reused. You can also have a message sent to the screen giving "return" instructions to the person who "finds" the device. In addition, you can have the phone make noise, and you'll be able to track its location online.

BlackBerry 10.3.2 also improves the rear camera on BlackBerry 10 models by adding low light performance in auto-mode, improving face-detection, and reducing the blur caused by camera movement.

BlackBerry 10.3.2 also comes with the Amazon Appstore for those who want to install Android games and apps on their phone.

The update will start rolling out globally in the next few weeks. Once your carrier has approved it, you will receive a notification in BlackBerry Hub telling you that the new OS build has arrived.

BlackBerry Passport Shows Softer Side With Next Generation Oslo Hardware

Remember that Oslo handset from BlackBerry that leaked to the web a couple of months ago? More pictures of the device have surfaced, and while the quality of the new snapshots isn't much better, the multiple angles do end up giving us a better look at what BlackBerry is working on. Short and to the point, the phone currently known as Oslo is basically an updated Passport.

Oslo gains a few curves and more rounded edges compared to the original Passport, and in that way it better resembles the customized version of the Passport that landed on AT&T. It also retains the large square-shaped display with QWERTY keyboard underneath, along with much of the same hardware, assuming the leaked specs are accurate.

If so, the Oslo will sport a 2.2GHz MSM8974 Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC, 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, 3GB of RAM, and a 3450 mAh battery. That's exactly what you'll find in the Passport, along with 32GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, 2-megapixel front camera, and 4.5-inch display with a 1440x1440 resolution.

So, what's different? Not much -- just a slightly different form factor consisting of a combination of a steel frame mixed with silver plastic. There's also a beveled backside. Overall, it's a better physical design than the non-AT&T Passport, but unless BlackBerry thinks the lack of rounded edges is what ultimately held the Passport back, it's hard to imagine Oslo being any kind of game changer.

Epic ‘Storm’ Sparked BlackBerry’s Dreadful Downfall Says Former CEO

It's hard to imagine that BlackBerry was one of the fastest growing tech companies at one point. Back then, the Canadian company was known as Research In Motion (RIM) and it was kicking tail. Fast forward to today and BlackBerry is struggling not just to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung, but for relevancy in the mobile world. So, what went wrong?

If you ask former co-chief executive Jim Balsillie, he'll tell you that BlackBerry's Storm handset was a major mistake. Speaking at The Empire Club of Canada, Balsillie offered some candid insight into BlackBerry's rise and fall from prominence. But where things get really interesting is when he talks about the Storm, a handset that had a 100 percent return rate at Verizon.

At the time the Storm came out, Balsillie says BlackBerry was owning the low-end market with devices that were flying off of store shelves. It was a good moment in time for the company, but where it erred is in trying to compete with the iPhone in the premium sector. It also didn't help that AT&T went all-in with the iPhone, as at the time it was BlackBerry's second largest customer. And ironically enough, Verizon had asked BlackBerry if it could build a touchscreen device, which is partially how the Storm came to be.

Balsillie said the impact of the Storm was "devastating," noting that Verizon, it's top customer at the time, fired BlackBerry as a vendor.

"There's a fine line between ambition and biting off more than you can chew," Balsillie said. "With Storm we tried to do too much. It was a touch display, it was a clickable display, it had new applications. It was all done in an incredibly short period of time and it blew up on us."

Balsillie says it was at that time he knew BlackBerry couldn't compete on high end hardware anymore. That was a major blow, considering it had lost its number one customer, and its number two customer was infatuated with the iPhone.

Fast forward to today and BlackBerry's share of the market is barely perceptible compared to Android and iOS. The company obviously hasn't given up, but it certainly faces an uphill battle.

BlackBerry Rumored To Make A Switch To Android Smartphones

After being rumored to be triangulated under Microsoft and Xiaomi’s radar in order to be acquired, Canadian smartphone firm BlackBerry is now being reported to be working on a smartphone that will be running Google’s Android operating system. The rumor had to come around sooner or later, seeing as how the company’s efforts of revamping its lineup of devices did not bear fruit. According to Reuters, BlackBerry’s primary focus while releasing an Android handset will be to focus on its software and device management.

Releasing An Android smartphone Will Allow BlackBerry To Improve The Platform’s Security And Increase Its Notoriety In The Market

For all those who follow tech news to the letter, you would know that the company’s unparalleled expertise lies in mobile enterprise security, as well as IoV, which is known as Internet of Vehicles (and the two main things that any tech firm would want after being rumored to acquire BlackBerry). However, the company’s smartphone market share is at an abysmal state; the company has only been able to influence less than 1 percent of the entire smartphone market, which is not doing well for the company in terms of revenue generation.
It has not been stated if BlackBerry plans on burying its BlackBerry 10 lineup of devices if they release an Android handset, but in a company email, it was stated that:
“We don’t comment on rumors and speculation, but we remain committed to the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which provides security and productivity benefits that are unmatched.”

So far, the company has been adamant on rolling out smartphones that feature a physical keyboard. While devices that possess a larger screen size are always coveted, the company will be able to target a whole new niche (Android physical keyboard running smartphones), assuming the rumor turns out to be true. Furthermore, seeing as how consumers have always preferred a treasure full of apps rather than mobile security, it will give BlackBerry a golden opportunity to fortify the Android platform, which will only increase its goodwill with Google in the foreseeable future.
During the Mobile World Congress Event that was taken place in Barcelona, BlackBerry showed off a slider device. While there have been no details provided concerning its hardware configuration or the software that it runs, perhaps this is the notorious device that will be running Android Lollipop, or even Android M.
Unfortunately, it cannot be confirmed as yet, and we are going to have to wait a few more months in order to confirm what BlackBerry’s plans are for the future. However, for the company’s future, we sincerely hope that a device running the Android platform is released.
