$700 Xbox One Halo 5 Guardians ‘Pink Mist Edition’ Bundle Includes Life-Size Needler Gun Replica

We don't know if Microsoft will catch up and surpass Sony in console sales, but if not, it won't be for a lack of trying. Microsoft has been doing a bang up job with its Xbox One console, both on the software side and in terms of hardware upgrades and bundles. One of the latest -- and arguably the coolest -- is the Xbox One Halo 5 Guardians Limited Collector's Edition - Pink Mist Edition.

It's also the longest name of any Xbox One bundle that we're aware of, which is fitting, because it boasts one of the most robust collections of add-ons and extras. Included inside are all the goodies you get with the standard Xbox One 5 Guardians Limited Collector's Edition, plus a replica Needler Gun and statute.

No, the replica gun doesn't actually shoot those crystal needles that you see protruding from the top, which are designed to impale an enemy before exploding. However, it does light up and make sounds. Here's a look at the gun's features:

    • LED lights
    • In-game sound
    • Over 14 different needlers mechanically pop up and down in sequence when trigger is pressed -- just like in game
    • Massive size -- real life 1:1 model created from the original digital files used in game
    • Limited edition
    • About 29 inches across over 10 inches tall

It's a pretty sweet keepsake, though it's far from the only thing that's included in the bundle. Microsoft also tosses in a commemorative statue of the Master Chief and Spartan Locke by TriForce, Metal Earth Guardian model, a SteelBook, Spartan Lock'es classified orders and dossiers on Blue Team and Fireteam Osiris, and a bunch of digital content.
As you might imagine, the Pink Mist Edition is pricey. It also appears to be an exclusive for U.K.'s GAME, which has it available to pre-order for £449.99 (just shy of $700 in U.S. currency). On the plus side, shipping to a U.S. address isn't all that expensive (about $8).

    Halo 5 Guardians Gamescom Frame-Rate Test (Work-in-Progress) 60fps

DigitalFoundry has released a Work in Progress Frame-Rate Test for Halo 5 Guardians, based on the Gamescom gameplay presentation of the upcoming title from 343 Industries.

    DigitalFoundry explains:
We had the chance to take another look at Halo 5 Guardians at this year’s Gamescom. Although different levels were shown compared to the E3 campaign reveal, overall performance does show a clear improvement – a state of affairs backed up by this collection of b-roll clips Microsoft released this week, with good clean performance marred only by a sub-optimal cut-scene at 00:29. More interested in multiplayer performance? Skip ahead to 01:38.
The official Xbox YouTube channel has made available a Halo 5: Guardians Campaign Behind the Scenes Teaser for the Xbox One Exclusive, which can be watched below:

A mysterious and unstoppable force threatens the galaxy, the Master Chief is missing and his loyalty questioned. A Hero Reborn ViDoc takes you behind the scenes of the most dramatic Halo story to date in a 4-player cooperative epic that spans three worlds.
You can watch the entire documentary now on the Halo Channel. The Halo Channel is currently available on Xbox One, Windows 8.1 PCS/Tablets, IOS, Android and coming soon to Windows Phone.

DigitalFoundry has recently released a Frame-Rate test from the E3 2015 presentation of Halo 5; Guardians, which can be viewed below:

E3 work-in-progress footage. 343 Industries is aiming for 60fps gameplay, but it’s clear that there’s a lot of optimisation work to do – and we suspect that could well be down to CPU as well as GPU.
Already, 343 is looking to free up as much GPU time as possible – as well as lower resolution transparencies effects (explosions etc), there’s a dynamic horizontal resolution in play here, while vertical resolution is locked to 810 pixels right now. But 343 says that nothing from E3 resolution-wise is final – but we can definitely see the techniques it is currently using in an attempt to keep frame-rate high.
    DigitalFoundry explains:
The current dynamic frame resolution system can actually be observed in more detail within the ‘Road to E3′ video published on the Halo Channel a few weeks back, and embedded below. It provides a closer look at the game in a debug state, complete with important performance statistics visible on-screen, as the camera is flown in and around the environment. We can see the horizontal resolution apparently shift dynamically between a full 1920 all the way down to 832 pixels. With 810 vertical lines in play we’re looking at a resolution ranging from 1920×810 to 832×810. However, in b-roll distributed during E3, minimum resolution observed comes in at 1152×810 – not exactly wonderful but presumably more indicative of where the system is right now during gameplay.
We will bring you any new information on Halo 5: Guardians as soon as it becomes available.

Halo 5 dev explains why the game won’t have split-screen

Over the years, Halo has gained a reputation as one of the best ‘couch co-op’ shooters around thanks to its split-screen multiplayer. In-fact, it was one of the selling points for the Master Chief Collection last year over on the Xbox One. Unfortunately, split-screen won’t be returning in Halo 5 Guardians, news that has disappointed many fans.
However, 343 Industries does have a good, technical reason for the feature being omitted in the latest game in the series. While many fans have been asking for the feature to come back, it simply can’t, according to Halo Franchise Director, Frank O’Connor.

Responding to a tweet that used the hash tag #BringHalo5SplitScreenBack, O’Connor said: “if we could do it, we would do it. But it is what they call ‘nontrivial'”. The technical reasons surrounding the removal of split-screen in Halo 5 were detailed by 343 Industried in a blog post back in July, which said:
“Many of our ambitious goals for Halo 5 would be compromised in a split-screen setting and the time spent optimizing and addressing split-screen-specific issues would take focus from building other parts of the game. Game development is a balancing act of resources, time, and technology, and in this case we made the tough decision to sacrifice something that’s been near and dear to us all.”
Even if fans did express their interest in a split screen mode now, the game is approaching the final stages of development over the next two months, ahead of its release in October, so it is likely too late at this point.

New Halo 5: Guardians Screenshots Showcase Campaign Mission – New Footage Shows off Slayer Multiplayer

Halo 5: Guardians is undoubtedly one of most substantial exclusive video game titles releasing this year, and it looks like 343 Industries is all set to inaugurate the legendary first-person shooter series on Microsoft’s eighth generation Xbox One console in a proper way. The upcoming game comes as a sequel to Halo 4, and allows players to experience the rich Halo universe. It features the “most ambitious campaign and multiplayer experience in franchise’s history”, all running at smooth 60 frames per second. Here are some new in-game screenshots for you to feast your eyes upon.

New Halo 5: Guardians Screenshots Released Showing Off Blue Team Campaign Mission – Slayer Multiplayer Incoming

We’re actively moving towards the end of the year, but there is still a lot to look forward to in terms of major game releases taking place before the year ends. As one of the biggest flagship properties for Microsoft, Halo has always been Xbox fans’ favorite franchise. After releasing Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Xbox One, Microsoft now turns towards its eager fans with Halo 5: Guardians, the most anticipated and highly awaited main installment in the company’s most prized multi-billion dollar franchise.

The game is not more than a couple of months away, and to keep the hype train going, 343 has just released some brand new screenshots showcasing the Blue Team campaign mission that has already been shown off a number of times before, however, these screenshots are fresh, and have been taken from new angles. That is not all, a new footage on GameSpot’s YouTube channel shows off the well-known Slayer Mode for the game’s Multiplayer campaign. You can check out the screenshots and the footage below.

Halo 5: Guardians is set to launch on October 27 exclusively for Xbox One console. It has been confirmed that unlike previous Halo titles, the upcoming game will not feature the famed local splitscreen for campaign co-op or multiplayer, this means you won’t be able to play the campaign with a friend. It is obviously a bummer. However, the new content and modes that are being introduced seem quite appealing.

Halo 5’s Opening Cinematic is quite Sensational with Nathan Fillion as Witty as Ever

Microsoft has released the opening cinematic of Halo 5: Guardians, and it does look quite impressive. The trailer shows Spartan Locke and the rest of Fireteam Osiris as they receive UNSC orders to recover a high value target and deploy to take on Covenant and Promethean forces in a fierce action sequence. Nathan Fillion as Edward Buck looks and sounds exactly like his witty self. Mike Colter’s likeness is used for Spartan Locke as he starred in Halo: Nightfall, as the aforementioned character, although the voice-over work is done by Ike Amadi, if I’m not mistaken. The actor’s previous work includes Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, GTA V, Mass Effect 3 among many others.
You can view the impressive opening cinematic of Halo 5: Guardian below:

New Halo 5: Guardians Footage Leaked Online

Just to be safe; Spoiler Alert, watch at your own risk. But, should you decide to partake, you might find a great new trailer for Halo 5: Guardians that gives some insight into the grand cinematic atmosphere we’ll get to enjoy.

Leaked Halo 5 trailer presents us with Master Chief and Locke brawling.

The new trailer is a repost by The Bro Master of one leaked to the public which appears to as if it were filmed in a theater setting of some kind, perhaps a semi-private showing or even possibly something before a specific movie. In the trailer we can see quite a few shots of in-game locations and even a somewhat intense melee battle complete with energy sword.
A lot of speculation and semi-serious discussion has already made its way into the videos comments, and of course the battle between Spartan Locke and the Master Chief is much anticipated. as even Locke might be further evolved, better, faster and stronger. But is he a match for the near-super-human Master Chief?
Halo 5: Guardians is coming to the Xbox One on October 27th. The final resolution still hasn’t been quite locked in yet, though it might be a dynamic resolution as they want to try for a near constant 60FPS for a smoother experience.
What does everyone about this trailer? Does this line up with current expectations of the impending release of Halo 5?

Halo 5 Getting More Controversial Changes

Some very interesting things are happening with the development of Halo 5, features thoroughly enjoyed from past Halo games that just won’t seem to make it into Halo 5.

    Garage Door Opener @GDO_TWITS
@JoshingtonState Is there gonna be vote or veto or something similar to Halo 2 in #Halo5Guardians ?

    Follow
    Josh Holmes @JoshingtonState

@GDO_TWITS No voting or veto, just straight rotation.

Voting for maps in Halo 5 won’t be an option at all anymore, but instead a simple rotation in multiplayer.

Taking to Twitter, Josh Holmes of 343 Industries, slightly disappointed fans by telling us that we can no longer vote for which map should come next in the rotation. Despite being a great feature in Halo 2 that let you skip the maps that were less fun for the group. Sometimes you and your friends might enjoy particular maps and modes, and want to be able to choose what’s played.
An updated system in Halo: The Master Chief Collection allowed the most popular content to be the most often played through a novel voting system, though this had the added side-effect of killing the usual variety, having some content appear far more frequently than might be intended.
So far, though, the response has been well-received. It seems that 343 Industries wants us to be able to play all the maps. While you might be uncomfortable playing a particular map, because you might not know it as well, this can help increase your skill by almost forcing you to also pay attention to even the maps you hate.

343’s Frank O’Connor: “Plenty of chance that Halo 5 could appear on the PC”

Frank O’Connor, Development Director for the Halo franchise at 343 Industries, speaking during a Halo 5 live stream on GamesRadar’s Twitch channel, answered a question from a fan regarding the chances of Halo 5: Guardians coming to the PC.

There’s plenty of chance that Halo 5 could appear on the PC

    O’Connor explains:
“You know, Microsoft has made a huge commitment trying sort of… I think normalize the Windows experience across multiple platforms. You see the elements of Windows 10 are going to appear in Xbox and Cortana and stuff like that. There is plenty of chance that Halo 5 could appear on the PC. Nothing to announce at this point… you know, we developed the game on an Intel platform. It wouldn’t be the hardest thing in the world to move it to PC and take advantage of PC stuff. But nothing I announce today on this chat.”

Aaron Greenberg: “Halo 5 Is Being Made Exclusively for Xbox One”

Following 343’s Frank O’Connor’s statement regarding the possibility of Halo 5: Guardians coming to the PC, Marketing head Aaron Greenberg followed-up to clarify that the Development Director’s remark does not indicate a release on the PC platform. He specifies that Halo 5 is made exclusively for the Xbox One, as can be seen in his tweet below.

    Chester @RMDXBOX
@aarongreenberg I find that your communication is catastrophic how can you say a possible release of Halo5 on PC in three days of its releas

    Follow
    Aaron Greenberg @aarongreenberg

@RMDXBOX This is not true. Game is being made exclusively for Xbox One.

Halo 5: Guardians remains an Xbox One exclusive, for now….

To be fair, O’Connor did state that he had nothing to announce, at present, which seemingly does give a glimpse of hope that in the future there could be an announcement of some sort, regarding either Halo 5: Guardians or more likely the Master Chief Collection. The latter being ported to the PC, using the latest engine iteration could be possible, if somewhat more costly to produce. Could be though, that it’s what the PC community needs to acknowledge Microsoft’s dedication to the platform.

With Fable Legends, Killer Instinct, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and Sea of Thieves already confirmed to be coming to Windows 10, things are starting to look pretty encouraging, and an announcement of the Master Chief Collection could be the icing on the cake. Forza Horizon 2 could also be a potential title making its way to the Windows 10 platform, leaving Forza Motorsport exclusively on the Xbox One for the near future.
We will bring you any new information from Microsoft, as well as Halo 5: Guardians as soon as it becomes available.

343’s O’Connor Tries To Clear Up Halo 5 PC Statements, After MS Denies PC Version

343’s development director for the Halo franchise Frank O’Connor has commented on Microsoft’s statement that Halo 5: Guardians won’t be coming to PC.

The Halo community sort of exploded last week, when 343’s Frank O’Connor stated that there is plenty of chance that Halo 5 could appear on PC. According O’Connor moving the game over the PC, isn’t the hardest thing since it’s being developed on an Intel platform.
Following O’Connor’s statement, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg denied a possible PC release for the Xbox One exclusive. Xbox’s marketing head Greenberg stated that a PC release “isn’t true”, and that the game is made exclusively for the Xbox One.

343i To Address Halo 5 Diagonal Aiming Issue In Future Update

Developer 343 Industries is looking to address Halo 5: Guardians aiming issues in a future update. 343’s studio head Josh Holmes said this on Twitter today.

Following the release of Halo 5, fans have been reporting that aiming is anything from smooth. Others have report a “large deadzone” feeling. According the reporters, the issues weren’t apparent in the game’s beta. On the Halo Waypoint forums, user Smooth Jazz posts that, changing the thumb stick layout to anything except default, fixes the apparent smoothness issues.
343 mades changes to the aiming, but acknowledges diagonal aiming issue

Judging from 343’s reactions on the forums, the developer seems to be aware of the problem, and asks users to provide information regarding the used controllers. On the teambeyond forums, 343’s pro-team member Eric Hewitt addressed the issue, and stated that 343 made changes to the game’s aiming following the beta:
Saw Josh posting about the aiming in Halo 5 in response to some of your questions and figured it’d be a good time to lend some insight. That being said, yes, the aiming did change a little bit from Beta up until now. During the Beta, close-range gameplay felt fluid, mid-range felt decent, and long-range felt flat-out squirrelly. So, our Pro Team went through numerous tests over the course of a few months with our lead sandbox designer, Chris King, and the rest of his team in regards to how our how aim felt leading up to the release. There were some days where our entire team despised it, other days where our team had a split-decision, and finally one day where we all felt extremely comfortable with it.
Now, to be fair, we’ve played this game for two years, so we do have a lot more time spent getting comfortable with the movement, as well as the weaponry. Nevertheless, like any other Halo player, we all know how good our shots are when it comes to a Halo utility weapon, and that day, we felt it. Thus, after careful tweaking, constant iteration, and daily discussion, we landed on our favorite fit. It gave players the perfect blend of sensitivity across all three ranges. Yes, close-range might feel a little bit harder to control at first, but in the long run, you will all learn to adjust to it for the better. Shooting the magnum in this game is very particular, seemingly like how Killer N or StK Tupac shot their pistols in Halo 1. At first, it’s going to be tough, but it will get much better with practice. Even to this day, shooting a Halo 1 pistol up-close is extremely challenging though, right?
Furthermore, since the game is running at 60FPS, and the mobility is so fast in-game, I want to reiterate that everyone of us needs to adjust to how the aim-adhesion will feel for Halo 5. It’s a bit tricky at first – using a single-shot weapon to essentially swipe over an enemy as you pull the trigger feels different than before. Also, in the Halo 5: Guardians Beta, a bug slipped through the cracks that had a delayed aim-assist problem. You could swipe your reticle over an opponent, and the game would display Red Reticle, but it was after a 5ms delay. Thankfully, we were able to address that issue and fix it before launch. So now, everything should feel very smooth. Nonetheless, we are actively listening to feedback, and we are always welcome to change. So, if players do feel this strongly about the aim after a few weeks, our teams will without a doubt revisit the sensitivity curves in Halo 5.

Halo 5: Guardians Steamrolls Its Way To Blockbuster $400 Million Opening Week

To say that the Halo franchise is a big deal for Microsoft and Xbox gamers is a serious understatement. Halo remains the most recognizable gaming property for the Xbox platform, and the release last week of Halo 5: Guardians for the Xbox One was nothing short of spectacular. Microsoft reports that in its first week of availability, Halo 5: Guardians brought in over $400 million in global sales. Microsoft specifically mentions “games and hardware” in that figure, so the company is likely including Halo 5: Guardians Xbox One bundles in that figure, which skews those numbers a bit. After all, the console bundle retails for $499, while a boxed version of the game will set you back just $59.99.
Regardless of the technicalities, Microsoft says that the Halo 5: Guardians launch was big enough to push lifetime sales for the franchise to over $5 billion. “With the highest week one attach rate for a Microsoft first party title on Xbox One, the game was the most played of any game on Xbox One, as well as the most played on Xbox Live,” said Microsoft via the Xbox Wire.

And since we’re talking about records, Microsoft says that Halo 5: Guardians is the quickest selling Xbox One exclusive game yet, and that tremendous digital sales made it the best-selling digital game launch via the Xbox Store.
Since the game’s launch last Tuesday, Master Chief fans have logged over 21 million hours of total gameplay. The multiplayer mode alone has racked up over nine million hours of gameplay and millions of multiplayer matches have been initiated.
“The success of Halo 5: Guardians is a testament to the innovative work from the entire team at 343 Industries to bring this installment to Xbox One and the incredible community of fans who have come to love the story, characters and gameplay central to the franchise,” said Xbox chief Phil Spencer. “The game represents all the possibilities of Xbox One and has earned its place as the anchor title in the greatest holiday games lineup in Xbox history.”
Looking forward, Halo fans should keep an eye on the Halo World Championship which opens its doors in December and concludes in March. The tournament will span across five global regions and has a prize pool in excess of $1.5 million.

    Halo 5 Review

    Halo 5 review

    Price: £38.44
    Developer: 343 Industries
    Publisher: Microsoft
    Platform: Xbox One

Say what you want about Master Chief but I've always been a fan of the Halo series' green-suited protagonist. He's instantly at home on the frontlines of any battle, the strong silent type that's at his best when he's dishing out the pain up close, letting his actions do the talking.

It's perhaps convenient that Halo 5 is similar, better in the thick of it than actually trying to say anything meaningful. The moment to moment combat is amongst the best you'll find on Microsoft's big black box, but many of the new additions are jarring, perhaps none more-so than Spartan Locke, who fills in on protagonist duties for much of the game, with Master Chief just a recurring character in his own saga.

The three missions when you control Master Chief feel like greeting an old friend, you charge about with the Chief and his old friends, Blue Team. Their short knowing responses and those familiar green hands are comforting, but for many of the games 15 missions these are snatched away and replaced with Locke and his merry band of rookies, including Nathan Fillion.

Unlike the other games, here you're always in a 4 man fireteam, and they're generally useful except for when they decide not to revive you because there's a grunt 300 metres away that needs a fresh lead injection.

The missions are all pretty solid although are just a series of engagements one after another - this is rather the point of an FPS and when the alternate is Halo: Conversation Evolved as you walk around a hub level trying to talk to different people / listen to conversations, I was always happy to be in the thick of it.

It feels a good length too - I finished it on Heroic in around 8-9 hours and didn't feel cheated - although there were 2-3 moments that were spectacularly tricky and had me yelling at the controller through repeated retries. As I was playing on a harder difficulty, this isn't really anything to be alarm about either.

The addition of verticality immediately sings. New mechanics like a jetpack and mantling means there's a Y-axis to the combat, which allows you to pick off enemies with ease from above, while your teammates battle below. Unfortunately, the AI can't keep up with the game and level design, and most enemies seem unable to comprehend how to deal with your airborne assault.

The few enemies that can are the ones that are annoying because of all of the armour strapped to them. It's the Prometheans that are most guilty of this, taking several rounds to their robotic heads to bring them down. Oftentimes early in the campaign, fighting them felt like a slog and although this got easier later as I got the hang of it, there were a series of boring encounters early on.

By and large though, it's a solid campaign, despite the abrupt ending - a symptom of Halo 5's status as the middle child of 343's Halo trilogy. It's impossible to say right now whether the plot is needlessly convoluted or just a stepping stone on the path to greatness. Right now, it feels a little ridiculous but the characterisation is solid and the cutscenes are skippable if you decide not to worry about the story. No one will judge.
