    Ces 2015

CES 2015: 7 Biggest Trends to Watch

It’s time to look beyond merely bigger TVs, lighter and faster laptops, and yet another me-too tablet. CES 2015 promises a wave of compelling innovations, bringing together more than 3,500 exhibitors and 150,000 attendees to see what’s next in tech in Las Vegas. Tom’s Guide, sister site Tom’s Hardware and Laptop Mag will be hitting the show floor in full force to help you decide what devices and breakthroughs need to be on your radar.
What do we expect? Think smart home gear that truly lives up to the name, fitness wearables you can throw in the wash and high-tech cars that nearly drive themselves. You’ll also see new flagship smartphones — possibly even from Samsung — and affordable LCD TVs that close the picture quality gap with OLED.
Here are the seven biggest trends to watch at CES 2015. And stay tuned for our CES Top Pick awards, which we will announce Jan. 8.
Flagship Phones From Sony and LG ... and Samsung's Galaxy S6?

Rumor has it that Samsung could pull the trigger on its next big smartphone at CES, which would be quite a departure from its typical February unveiling at Mobile World Congress. According to GSM Arena, analysts told Korean News source Chosun Biz that the Galaxy S6 could debut between Jan. 6 and 9.
The Galaxy S6 will reportedly boast a bigger, 5.5-inch display that could be curved on both edges. Given the disappointing sales of the Galaxy S5, Samsung may be looking to generate early buzz for its next flagship.
MORE: Galaxy S6 Rumors - What to Expect
Sony’s Xperia Z4 seems much more of a lock for a CES unveiling, as the company has already provided a preshow tease. The follow-up to one of our favorite smartphone cameras may get a quad-HD, 5.5-inch screen in addition to a faster Snapdragon 810 chip.
Also keep an eye out for a new curved smartphone from LG. According Android Authority, we could see the G Flex 2. Last but not least, Kodak will show off a new Android-powered camera phone manufactured by the Bullitt Group (also known for making Catepillar's rugged smartphones).
4K TVs Make Quantum (Dot) Leap

OLED TVs will likely continue to be the gold standard for high-def televisions, but not everyone has a CEO-style budget. And most TV makers are shying away from OLED due to the expense. Enter quantum dot technology, which uses nanocrystals that emit different colors — depending on their size — to offer richer colors and better saturation at a more wallet-friendly price.
LG has already announced quantum dot TVs for early 2015, and Sony and TCL have sets with the technology in the market. Samsung tends to march in lockstep with LG, so don’t be surprised to see the company unveil quantum dot 4K TVs of its own at CES 2015. That’s on the higher end of the market, though. Also expect lots of 4K sets priced to move more quickly than today’s models — well under $1,000 — and a new wave of curved TVs.

Fitness Trackers: From Wrist to Clothes

Fitness trackers were one of the hottest sellers during the holidays, and that momentum should continue well into the new year as people try to stick to those resolutions. Fitbit’s Surge “fitness superwatch” will be on display, set to go on sale in January, and we expect several more wearable hybrid devices that combine activity tracking with smartphone notifications. Garmin, whose Vivosmart is our current top fitness tracker, will also be on hand to show off its new wares.
Not a fan of wristwear? Companies like Sensoria are making everything from socks and sports bras to fitness shirts that can monitor your heart rate and other data. There’s also OMSignal, which sells a smart shirt that tracks heart rate, breathing, steps, calories and more. Athos’ smart fitness wear (shirt, shorts) goes a step further by reading your muscle effort. Expect to see more trackers you can throw in the wash at CES.
MORE: Best Fitness Trackers for Every Budget
    Simpler Smart Home Gear

CES 2014 saw a flood of smart home tech, but very few of the devices caught on with the masses. Now more and more companies are trying to bring the simplicity of the smash-hit Nest thermostat to their own categories.
For example, Ring and SkyBell will be battling it out to be your digital doorman, complete with a wide-angle video stream to your smartphone or tablet. Other companies will be joining the fray as well.
Coming Jan. 4 (according to its website), Myfox promises to reinvent the home security system with tags you can attach to a door or window. The company says an alarm will be triggered beforea break-in is attempted. As for smart home hubs that control multiple devices, new players will enter the market at CES.
    Connected Car Wars Heat Up

The battle between Google and Apple is moving from your smartphone to your dashboard. For example, Hyundai will debut a new head unit at CES 2015 that integrates both Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay. That means you’ll be able to get directions, listen to music and enjoy other apps regardless of which OS powers your handset.
Look for Nvidia to make some car tech noise at its CES press conference. And we’re not just talking about infotainment. The company says that it will showcase advanced driver assistance systems, a precursor for self-driving cars.
MORE: Google to Integrate Android Auto Directly Into Cars
Also at CES, Ford will be showing off its new Sync 3.0 system, powered by BlackBerry’s QNX technology (no more Microsoft under the hood). Expect a simpler interface, smoother performance and easier upgrades via Wi-Fi. Expect updates for Chrysler’s Uconnect system as well.
3D Printers for Less Than a Laptop

Despite a lot of hype, 3D printing remains mostly a curiosity for consumers, but a few companies will try to make the technology a lot more accessible and affordable at CES.
Think 3D printers that cost less than $400, with an emphasis on compact design and ease of use. Makers of 3D printers know that finding good stuff to print can also be a challenge, so look for devices that integrate more tightly with online marketplaces for ideas.
    MORE: Top-Rated 3D Printers
The 3D Printing Marketplace section at CES will be double the size of last year's, and all of the top names in the space will be present. These brands include 3D Systems, Formlabs, MakerBot, New Matter and XYZprinting.
VR and AR Headsets Get More Real

It’s hard to believe that the Oculus Rift debuted at CES nearly two years ago now. Since then, the company got scooped up by Facebook, partnered with Samsung on the Gear VR headset (which works with the Galaxy Note 4) and has continued refining its own prototypes on the way to a consumer release. At CES 2015, Oculus will be showing its latest Crescent Bay prototype and hopefully providing a taste of how its headset will interact with Nimble VR’s hand- and finger-tracking input. Oculus acquired that company in December. A final shipping date for Oculus would be nice, too.
Sony hasn’t said much about its Project Morpheus virtual reality headset, but we hope to hear more from the company about its progress at its CES press conference. On the augmented-reality front, we’re excited to get our eyes on a near-final version of the SiME smart glasses offering, which runs full Android and is targeting a $500 price.

LG to unveil new 'Art Slim' line of LCD televisions at 2015 CES

The 2015 Consumer Electronics Show gets under way next week in Las Vegas and among the companies already jockeying for media attention is LG with its new Art Slim line of LCD televisions.
Measuring in at just 7.5mm (.29 inches) and 8.2mm (.32 inches) thick in 55-inch and 65-inch variants, respectively, LG’s first two models in the new line and will give some of today’s smartphones and tablets a run for their money as it relates to thinness.
And while not quite as slim as OLED panels, they’re pretty darn close and are extremely lightweight – 10.4kg (22.9 pounds) and 16.2kg (35.7 pounds), respectively. As such, they should look right at home if mounted on a wall.
LG was able to create the Art Slim line through innovations in the mechanical structure of the sets. Specifically, by using a new aluminum composite, they converted the back cover of the LCD module into the actual rear panel of the television. In addition to the thinness, the material also increases rigidity to help protect the delicate panel.
LG will release 55-inch and 65-inch models initially followed by a variety of additional panel sizes including a 49-incher as 2015 progresses.

Tobii To Showcase SteelSeries' Sentry Eye Tracker At CES; Launching January

SteelSeries eye-tracking Sentry should be coming to shelves soon.

Tobii, a company that's working with SteelSeries on the Sentry eye-tracking device, has announced that the SteelSeries Sentry will be available in January, shortly after demonstrating it at CES.
The SteelSeries Sentry is a device that you mount on top of your monitor that can track the movement and behavior of your eyes. It works in combination with specialized software to gather data about how you use your eyes in order to help you figure out whether your behavior is optimal for the game you're playing, or whether you're doing it all wrong. You might, for example, be missing a number of visual in-game cues, which leads to a sub-optimal performance.

LG’s Executive Might Not Be Allowed to Fly to CES

You might remember the incident around the time of IFA 2014 where several LG employees were accused of purposely damaging competitions washing machines in Berlin’s retail stores, one of them Jo Seong-jun, the head of LG’s Home Appliance and Air Solution Company. What sounded like something out of the schoolyard at first and also seemed settled after the people involved agreed to pay for the damage, might now come back to bite LG in the rear.
Samsung, whose machines were damaged, didn’t think that this was funny and reported it to the South Korean authorities who now apparently banned the executing from traveling to CES in a couple of days. LG is still denying all claims that it was done on purpose and is trying to get the flight ban lifted for the Consumer Electronics Show. On the other hand, Samsung maintains that the flight block indicates the severity of the incident.

LG has already teased it will be showing off a bunch of 4K TVs at CES 2015 next week, but the South Korean giant has just announced it will also be showcasing its new 21:9 ultra-wide monitors, too.

These monitors will be powered by AMD's FreeSync technology, which make ultra-wide monitors even better for gamers. LG will be showing off a bunch of new 4K TVs at CES 2015 next week

CES 2015 kicks off next week, with my bags not even packed yet and I jump on a plane 49.5 hours from now. But, LG is preparing a bunch of stuff to show off to the world, with a huge push in the world of 4K TVs.

The South Korean giant is reportedly going to be showing off no less than eight different product lines (UC9, UB9800, UF9500, UF9400, UF8500, UF7700, UF6800 and UF6700), where we'll see more than just the usual quantum dot technology and webOS 2.0 Smart TV updates we've been hearing about lately. LG's new Ultra HD TV's are thinner than ever before, with the company promising upgrades for the color balance and black levels.

The built-in 4K video decoder can handle both 30FPS and 60FPS inputs, and is "future-proof" for future standards

Silverstone Launches Three Cases, Including Mini-ITX Sugo SG13

Silverstone is launching at least three new cases at CES, one of which is teeny tiny.
CES is just a couple days away, but we already got our hands on some information about three cases that Silverstone has in the works. We've already seen these cases before -- in fact, we had some hands-on time with the SG13 at Computex this year-- but today we're bringing you pricing and availability information.
    The Kublai KL05

The KL05 is a large ATX tower, the key feature of which is the top, where you can mount a radiator above the rest of the case assembly. The exact benefit of this is unknown, although it does look like it will be a bit easier to mount a radiator there because you won't have to hold it up and screw it in from the top to make it stay in place.
Inside the case you'll be able to mount CPU coolers up to 165 mm tall, graphics cards up to 40 cm long (28 cm without removing the hard drive cages), and PSUs up to 225 mm long. The hard drive cages will hold up to six 3.5" or 2.5" drives, and there is also room for two more 5.25" optical drive bays, or a dual-bay water cooling reservoir.
Cooling in the case is handled by up to two front 140 mm fans, a 120 mm rear fan, two 140 mm top fans, and two 120 mm bottom-mounted fans. One 120 mm fan is included as standard kit. The case also has support for a 240 or 280 mm radiator.
Finally, the case weighs just under 7 kg, and measures in at 200 x 525 x 494 mm. It will be available in two variants: one with a window and a front mesh, and another plain version.
    The Precision Series PS11

The Precision Series PS11 also features an ATX tower design, but it's much more compact -- just about as tall as most Micro-ATX cases, actually.
Inside you will be able to fit a PSU up to 225 mm long, a CPU cooler up to 161 mm tall, and graphics cards up to 41 cm long (or 25.6 cm long when it is mounted low enough to bump into the hard drive cage). This drive cage will fit three 3.5" drives, and the case has room for two more 2.5" drives and two 5.25" optical drives.
For cooling, the PS11 has room for two front-mounted 140 mm fans, one rear-mounted 120 mm fan and one bottom-mounted 120 mm fan. One fan comes standard. The windowed version has two additional top-mounted 120 mm fan slots, although getting a radiator in there will be a tough fit because of space restrictions.

The case measures 215 x 426 x 481 mm, and it weighs about 4.8 kg. It will be available in a plain sleek version as well as a version with a front mesh, window, and top fan-mounting locations.
And at last, the Sugo SG13

The Sugo SG13 is possibly the most exciting case of this lot, because it's a very compact Mini-ITX case that can still house an ATX PSU, a liquid cooler, and a full-size Nvidia graphics card.
The bottom of the case houses the Mini-ITX motherboard in a flat orientation, with the power supply mounted above it. Up front, you can mount a 120 mm liquid cooling radiator, which is good, because there won't be very much clearance above the motherboard for installing large CPU coolers.
The case has room for graphics cards that are up to 26.6 cm long. Fortunately, Nvidia's GTX 780 Ti, GTX 970, and GTX 980 (the reference cards, at least, not that you'd want to use an open-air cooler in this case) fall within this specification, but unfortunately, anything above AMD's R9 270X exceeds that length.
    Pricing and Availability

Silverstone informed us that the Kublai KL05 will be available in the U.S. this week for $69.95, with no word on European availability.
Silverstone simply doesn't expect the European market to be interested in the Kublai KL05. (The company is curious, though, whether our European readers have any feedback on that front. The case would carry an MSRP of €58 excluding VAT.)
The PS11 will ship this week in the U.S. for $49.99 and mid-January in Europe for (ex-VAT) €43. The Sugo SG13 will ship in February for a friendly $39.99, and for €37 (ex-VAT) in Europe, sometime between February and March.

New release Samsung Smart TVs will include PlayStation Now

Usually seen as competitors, Samsung and Sony are now banding together for the benefit of the consumer - seeing Samsung's Smart TVs released in 2015 include PlayStation Now compatibility.

It's expected to see this feature be presented at CES 2015 in Las Vegas, which is set to kick off in a only few days time - just as PlayStation now was originally announced at CES 2014.

With the announcement of the partnership happening just before Christmas day, North American consumers will be among the first to receive this offer. As with other PlayStation Now compatible devices, the Samsung TVs will contain an app to connect to Sony's Gakai-powered games service, allowing customers to chose from a list of games that they can rent - picking as they wish and playing them almost instantly.

There's been no confirmation on development outside of the United States, either way this advancement is great news for the consumer as we've often seen Sony keep their programs and applications close to their chest - it's great to see them sharing and playing along.

Watch NVIDIA CEO Speak On Eve of CES

The Consumer Electronics Show opens officially on Tuesday, but we’ll get ahead of the game early – kicking off our press event on Sunday evening to show you what we’ve been up to. Tune in. Over the past few years, our Sunday show has become the unofficial start of CES – and it gets going with a bang. At last year’s, we took the lid off Tegra K1, a mobile processor with 192 graphics cores. The year before, we introduced the NVIDIA SHIELD portable.

Behind the glitz, there’s plenty of grinding. Over the past two decades, NVIDIA has invested more than $9 billion in new visual computing technologies. Events like CES give NVIDIA — and the companies building technical wonders that rely on our breakthroughs — a way to show consumers what they’ll be seeing in the new year. Over the years, that story has evolved. Twenty years ago, the PC was the center of the consumer technology universe. The weight has now shifted to mobile devices — phones, tablets and even cars.

The ViewSonic V55 smartphone may launch with an Iris scanner

The ViewSonic V55 smartphone is currently penciled in for an early 2015 release and could very well be the first consumer smartphone in the world to launch with iris scanning technology implemented. Bio-metrics began sneaking on to smartphones and other devices last year with fingerprint scanners but now it looks like we will be unlocking devices with our eyes next.
Iris scanning technology isn’t entirely new but it is a new feature when it comes to consumer products. A promo video for the V55 seems to suggest that the scanner could be used for pretty much everything, much like Apple’s Touch ID.

The ViewSonic V55 was originally expected to launch some time during 2014 but that ship has clearly sailed. Now the device is supposedly penciled in for early 2015, featuring a 5.5 Inch 1080p display, 2Gb of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 CPU clocked at 1.4Ghz.
The smartphone will also feature a Sony made camera on the back, which will accept external lenses should any buyers want to do any serious photography. The device doesn’t have an official release date just yet but it is possible that we will see it again at CES this month

Zotac takes the GTX 970 to 1380MHz on air

Zotac has added another variant to its growing lineup of GeForce GTX 970 graphics cards. The AMP! Extreme Core Edition is the sixth GTX 970 to bear Zotac's name—and the fastest one yet. This monster is clocked at 1125 MHz base and 1380 MHz boost, substantially higher than Nvidia's 1050/1178 MHz reference frequencies. The 7.2 GT/s memory transfer rate is higher than the stock 7 GT/s, as well, though the default 4GB memory size is unchanged.
Impressively, Zotac doesn't resort to liquid cooling to hit those clocks. The Extreme Core Edition is sandwiched between a beefy back plate and a triple-fan cooler.
    Source: Zotac
The dual-slot cooler lacks the hump found on Zotac's non-Core Extreme Edition, which should improve compatibility with slimmer chassis. You'll still need a case with enough room to accommodate the card's substantial length, though. The official product page doesn't list the card's dimensions, but the cooler looks to be at least a foot long.
Unlike Zotac's old Extreme Edition, which is fed by dual eight-pin PCIe power connectors, the uncore version gets by with dual six-pin plugs. It has the same port payload: three DisplayPort, one HDMI, and one DVI. There's no word on pricing or availability, but Zotac will be showing the card during next week's Consumer Electronics Show.
