Finding success in the App Store has become incredibly difficult

The amount of money being pumped into the mobile app economy is absolutely ridiculous. For the lucky few that have what it takes to get prominently featured in the charts, the payout is well worth the investment of time and money.Unfortunately, those that actually make any significant money from apps are few and far between according to a new report from app analytics firm Adjust.
Let’s take Apple’s App Store for example. Of the 1.42 million apps that now fill the store, the overwhelming majority of them – 83 percent, to be exact – are deemed as zombie apps. By definition, zombie apps are those that aren’t popular enough to appear in “top” lists for more than two-thirds of a measured timeframe and are therefore lost in the crowd.

The only way to find a zombie app is to specifically search for it by name.
Unlike traditional marketing that’s fueled by advertising, most apps that hit the big time do so organically. They get on a top list early on and are downloaded by a few people who tell their friends, share on social media, etc.
Zombie apps are a serious concern in the App Store as the number of them nearly doubled last year, from 657,000 at the beginning of the year to 1.1 million by December. Add in the fact that the App Store itself grew by 54.3 percent during 2014 and you can immediately see how difficult it has become to break into the market with the hope of any meaningful success.

Apple Grants Pinterest Ability To Discover And Directly Install iOS Apps

Want to try out a new recipe? Head over to Pinterest. Need some fashion tips? Once gain, take a look at Pinterest. Are you looking to install more iOS apps on your mobile device? You guessed it -- stroll on over to Pinterest, where you can now install iOS apps onto your iPhone or iPad device. Appropriately enough, they're called "app pins."

"Let’s say you’re Pinning workout inspiration to your Marathon Training board. If you see a fitness app that helps you reach your goals, you can download it right from Pinterest," Pinterest explained today in a blog post.

It's an interesting pairing, and one that makes sense when you think about it. This could introduce users to themed apps in their interest areas that they never new existed, especially since the App Store is filled with over 1.4 million apps. It's also convenient, in that you don't need to hop over to the App Store to install an app you discovered on one of your boards.

"When you come across an app Pin, tap Install to download the app right to your iPhone or iPad without ever leaving Pinterest (you’ll only see app Pins when you’re using the Pinterest app on your iPhone or iPad)," Pinterest added.

To help kick things off, Apple opened an official App Store account on Pinterest. It currently consists of five boards -- Fashion Apps, App Store at Fashion Week, People + Apps, Healthy Recipes, and Editors' Choice -- with 34 pins.

App Store gets the new Pay Once & Play category Apple announces

As of today App Store users can expect to find a new category for games labeled “Pay Once & Play”, the games sold in said category will not include any form of in-app purchases or micro transactions, Apple announced today.

No pesky in-app purchases in this App Store category!

Pay Once & Play will feature releases in the App Store, that do not require you to pay any additional fees to progress through the game, It’s as if someone thought: “Hey let’s actually have a place where consumers can get a game that’s actually a game, where you play the game without having the option to purchase stuff to beat the artificially-made harder levels.
“Enjoy hours of uninterrupted fun with complete experiences spanning the App Store’s most beloved genres, Packed with thrills and unforgettable moments, these powerhouse games belong in every collection.”
Just last year Apple made a similar change to the App Store, where they removed the word “FREE” from the installation button of any games and apps that were free-to-play and free-to-download, but also included in-app purchases. Nowadays it say “get” instead of “free” for these kind of games and apps. As well as having a disclaimer stating “offers in-app purchases”. Both of these changes most likely came due to the pressure from regulators such as the Federal Trade Commission, that have been pushing companies like Apple, Google and amazon to change their guidelines of how they promote free-to-play games with in-app purchases.
Last year Apple and Google had to pay several millions of dollars just to deal with complaints from the Federal Trade Commission over in-app purchases. As well as lawsuits from parents who probably were not so happy about ‘Little Timmy’ spending 6.000$ on virtual nonsense, with the tap of a button. Obviously as a parent, some of it is your own fault, if you allow your child to use a device which is configured with your credit-card information bad stuff can happen.
Overall I think in-app purchases are pretty bad, at least 50% of the time, a game will be made in a way, so that after a few levels the games difficulty is artificially increased to the point where you pretty much NEED to buy something for real money. It might also be that the game is created with gigantic time-walls much like the atrocity that is *cough* Dungeon Keeper Mobile *cough* which EA-games tried to get away with.

Apple is forcing game developers to edit depictions of guns in promotional screenshots

Apple has reportedly been turning away some mobile games from its iOS App Store because they display guns or violence in their promotional screenshots.
Pocket Gamer was first to break the news as multiple developers told the site that their games and updates were being rejected because they displayed what is apparently inappropriate material. Developer Splash Damage, for example, had to blur out the guns in their promotional screenshots for Tempo in order to get approval.
You can see more of their blurred shots by clicking here.
When releasing an update for Gunslugs II on January 16, developer OrangePixel also ran into issues. In an e-mail from one of the developers to Kotaku, they said one of their screenshots (which had previous been approved during the game’s original release) was rejected because of violence.
Team Chaos, the crew behind Rooster Teeth vs. Zombiens, said they had to remove the NES Zapper gun from their original icon. It was replaced with what appears to be a baseball bat.
Another developer responsible for a pair of high-profile shooter games who asked to remain anonymous said they were also forced to remove guns in their screenshots.
It is one thing if Apple wants to change its policy but it’s quite another to not do so universally. A game called Gang Nations shows cartoon-style characters holding all sorts of weapons in its screenshots while the updated version of Bullet Rush somehow manages to get away with showing sniper rifles.

Apple Pay To Become Accepted Payment Method For Federal Services

Speaking at the White House summit on cybersecurity, Tim Cook announced that starting this September, iPhone users will be able to pay for federal services using Apple Pay. Initially, those services will include admission to national parks and other similar services. Later, the company intends to make Apple Pay work with more security-sensitive services such as social security services and veterans' pensions.
“We're excited to announce that beginning in September, Apple Pay will be available for many transactions with the Federal Government, like for example when you pay for admission to your favorite national park," Cook said at the Stanford event.
“We're also working to make sure credit and procurement cards issued to government employees for their expenses can be used with Apple Pay, and we're working on initiatives with leading banks and networks to use this technology with benefits programs like social security and veteran's pensions that serve citizens at both the state and federal level."
Tim Cook also said that Apple is working with the U.S. government on making things such as driver licenses and passports digital, while still preserving the kind of strong privacy Apple Pay users get right now.
Apple Pay is the most privacy-oriented payment method out there because it uses unique tokens for each payment instead of the credit card number, which means merchants can't track multiple purchases from the same customer.
Touch ID is also one of the most secure identification methods in the world right now, while still being very easy to use. One thing Apple has done differently than other fingerprint-based solutions is that it doesn't store the fingerprint data on the device. Instead, a hash of the fingerprint data is created, and that is what's stored in a hardware-based "Secure Enclave." By using this method, Apple ensures that the fingerprint data can't be stolen from the device, even if the Secure Enclave is hacked.
Although having Apple create such a strong relationship with the government for federal services may end up marginalizing Android users for some time, it's probably better for everyone in the long term that it's Apple setting these strong security and privacy standards. If there was any other company, those standards could be much lower.
Apple may get a head start in adoption for federal services, but it's not going to monopolize digital identification for federal services. Sooner or later, the government will have to allow competitors to integrate with the government's systems, too, but by then they'll all have to embrace the high security standards Apple has paved before them.

Apple doubles the maximum allowed size of iOS apps, 16GB of storage suddenly much less appealing

Apple has increased the maximum size of apps in the App Store. Developers can now upload binaries (app packages) as large as 4GB through iTunes Connect, up from the 2GB limit that has been in place since the App Store debuted in 2008.
In a brief notice regarding the change, Apple said this will allow developers to include more media in their submissions and provide a more complete, rich user experience upon installation.
It’s worth pointing out that this change doesn’t impact the size threshold that an app must stay under in order to be downloadable via cellular network which remains at 100MB. After all, nobody wants to burn up an entire month of data or more just to download a single app.

For consumers, this simply means that those smaller capacity devices with 8GB and 16GB of storage are suddenly much less appealing.
I’m about as far from the stereotypical mobile user / geek as one can get while still loving technology. I don’t play mobile games (or really, any games at all these days), I no longer bother with social networking and I have zero interest in Star Wars / Lord of the Rings / Star Trek or any other fictional sci-fi classics.
Yet I noticed with my last phone that 16GB of storage was no longer sufficient. Between the various apps I do use (productivity, entertainment, IoT stuff), I often ran out of space and was forced to delete content if I wanted to snap a quick photo or video.
Even with the advent of cloud storage, we’re quickly approaching the point of where 32GB will be the new entry-level configuration.

Candy Crush Saga Players Spent $1.3 Billion on In-App Purchases Last Year

Candy Crush Saga is one of the most popular and at the same time one of the most hated mobile games available. It’s insanely popular because a lot of people find it addictive, but many hate it because of how it is completely laden with annoying and perhaps somewhat overpriced in-app purchases.
Despite the hate, it appears that the popularity is still paying off, as according to The Guardian, Candy Crush Saga players spent over $1.3 billion in 2014. It’s also the third-highest grossing app in the United States and represented 45% of spending on its developer’s games during the final quarter of 2014.
Although these numbers are big, they are actually in decline as Candy Crush Saga has seemingly hit its peak in popularity. However, that’s not to mean the end of Candy Crush altogether – King’s games had 356 million monthly unique users last year, with sequel Candy Crush Soda Saga climbing the App Store charts at 6th overall.

Microsoft Brings Native Integration Of iCloud And Box Cloud Storage To iOS Office Apps

Under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft has shown a surprising amount of “love” for its competitors. It has provided high-functioning Office apps to iOS and Android users well ahead of solutions for its own Windows Phone platform. It has even partnered with Dropbox, which goes head-to-head with Microsoft’s own OneDrive online cloud storage solution.

Today, Microsoft has even more love to share, as it is taking steps to offer more robust cloud storage integration into its Office apps. That starts today with the addition of updated iOS Office apps that allow users to “open, edit and save documents from these [third-party cloud storage providers] right from within Office.”

That means that iOS users can use their existing iCloud storage accounts in addition to Box and the aforementioned Dropbox. It's possible that we could even see Google Drive integration along with other storage services in the future, but these service providers will need to work with Microsoft to enable this functionality, which is made even easier by joining the new Cloud Storage Partner Program.

While Apple users always seems to be the first to receive the latest Office enhancements, Microsoft states that its third-party cloud storage support will be extended to its Android apps and Windows 10 in the near future. And support will also be extended to web version of Office: Office Online.

“Today’s announcements are just one more step on our continuing journey to open up Office in new ways for our customers and partners,” said Kirk Koenigsbauer, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Office 365 Client Applications.

“Living in a cloud-first, mobile-first world is all about having the flexibility to get things done from anywhere and on any device. And these exciting, new features will make it easier than ever to use Office with virtually any combination of apps, platforms and cloud storage services.”

The World Ends With You pulled from iOS

Quirky JRPG The World Ends With You has been pulled from the Apple app store by Square Enix after the developer has failed to deploy a suitable update for the game.

The World Ends With You: Solo Remix has been non-functional on iPad and iPhone devices since the launch of September's iOS 8 update. Previously, Square Enix had issued a warning on the app store saying that it is currently not functional and that the developer was working on a solution, but now Square Enix has simply pulled the game from the store.

Not only is the iOS version not available to buy, but re-downloading it if you have already bought it is no longer an option too.

Talking to Polygon, Square Enix stated that the incompatibility with iOS 8 is a much bigger problem than it initially assumed. The publisher is apparently still working on a solution for the game, but cannot commit to a specific timeline as yet.

The mobile version of The World Ends With You was launched in 2012 on iOS and Android devices in 2014. This version followed Square Enix's usual pricing strategy on mobile devices and sat around the £14.99 mark.

The game is a port of a Nintendo DS title released in 2007 that was met with a general positive critical reception and proved to be commercially successful. Worldwide, the game sold more than 350,000 copies.

Astropad transforms your iPad into a true graphics tablet

A pair of former Apple engineers has released an app that more or less transforms your iPad into a graphics tablet. It’s called Astropad and it could replace the need for something like a Wacom tablet, assuming of course you have an iPad and a Mac.
Astropad is based on a proprietary technology called Liquid which is key because it reduces latency to just 12ms and allows for 60 frames per second mirroring.
To use Astropad, you’ll need the app for your iPad (iOS 8 only) and Mac (Mavericks or later). When launched together, the iPad will mirror exactly what’s on the Mac screen using either Wi-Fi or USB connectivity. While you can use the app with virtually any service on your Mac, the most obvious / productive use scenario would be with a program like Photoshop.

Astropad works with multiple pressure-sensitive pens and best yet, the app color-corrects to match what you see on the Mac. It even uses ARM assembly code for the most efficient use of battery life should you be away from a power source.
The app is available as of writing at a price of $49.99, or $19.99 for academic users. That may sound like a lot of scratch but if you’re an artist that frequently transfers work from one device to the other, this could be a worthwhile investment.

Presto has launched on Android and iOS

How much time to you spend being entertained by your phone? Presto has joined Stan and Quickflix, fighting for your eyes by providing another video streaming subscription option in Australia.

With Netflix said to launch in 'The Land Down Under' next month, Citrix Mobile Analytics claims that "the mobile user experience is, increasingly, a video experience," which would explain the sudden surge in openings.

Compatible with iPhone 5S, 5S and higher Apple models, Android users will see multiple devices supported across Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony and ZTE. Access can be granted through the Presto app on either the Apple App Store, Google Play or the Samsung App Store.

As we've written previously, Presto is a project by Foxtel and Seven West Media in order to take control of this emerging scene.
