YouTube Kids Vaults Onto Google Play And iOS App Stores

News broke last week that YouTube was going to follow in the footsteps of Netflix and offer a family-friendly version of its streaming service for kids, and the report turned out to be true. The YouTube Kids app is now available to download from Google Play and Apple's App Store, the two most popular mobile platforms in the world.

"Today, we’re introducing the YouTube Kids app, the first Google product built from the ground up with little ones in mind. The app makes it safer and easier for children to find videos on topics they want to explore, and is available for free on and the in the U.S.," YouTube stated in a blog post.

The YouTube Kids app filters out content that isn't appropriate for kids, letting mom and pop rest easy knowing that little Suzie won't be traumatized by Old Gregg when she picks up the iPad. What's left is broken down into browsable channels and playlists in four categories: Shows, Music, Learning, and Explore.

Alternately, little Suzie or her brother Billy can search for videos that interest them. Maybe Billy needs some help with math and looks up tutorials on the subject, while Suzie wants to see what Thomas the Tank Engine is up to. Both will be able to find what they're looking for.

YouTube baked in some basic parental controls that allow mom and pop to set a timer, adjust the sound settings, limited searches to pre-selected videos (or turn it off altogether), and to provide feedback on how to improve the experience.

No word on whether YouTube Kids will find its way to Windows Phone / Windows 10. For now, you can find it here for Android and here for iOS.

Apple updates emoji's to express racial sensitivity

Released as part of the developer preview, Apple's next update will include a wide range of emoji's with various skin tones -helping express Apple's sensitivity to racial diversity.

Instead of white-only options being available, you can now select out of six skin tones what you wish your emoji face or hand to display. There are also numerous updates to sexual-preference, including families with children and couples of same-sex, rather than the previous male-and-female only.

There's a few other updates including new gadgets like the Apple Watch and also an Australian flag thrown into the mix - all set for release in the next few months.

Apple Developing Algorithm System To Speed Up Genius Bar Wait Times

The quality (and the subsequent price) of Apple products means that it’s not that often that owners find themselves needing service. But when they do, the first place most turn to is the Genius Bar, at their local Apple Store. But, as the hilarious Genius Bar Tales Twitter account informs us, it can get quite busy with people asking stupid questions. So if you have a genuine issue, and want to get an appointment in-between all of the teenagers asking why Instagram isn’t working on their iPhone, it can mean quite a wait.
Well, Apple apparently has a solution to that. The ever reliable 9to5Mac reports that the company is developing a new system that will allow people to just turn up to the Apple Store with their issue. They say that a new algorithm system will mean that a customer can simply inform any staff member of their issue and they’ll immediately be given an estimate of how long they have to wait.
The staff members will input the customer’s issue into a custom iPhone, and then a special app will strategically place the customer in a queue based on their complaint. If it’s a simple problem, like being unable to sign into iCloud, they’ll go straight to the front of the queue as it can be fixed and got out-of-the-way quickly. If it’s a complex issue, like a MacBook with a blinking display, they’ll be pushed further down the queue as so more time can be allocated to them. Following this, customers will then receive three text messages – one informing them of the wait time, another telling them to head back to the store, and a third informing them that the ‘Genius’ is ready and waiting.
As Apple apparently deems most Genius Bar visits to be minor and quick to fix issues, the notion of putting those appointments first makes sense.

Apple Opens Up iWork Web Apps To People Without Apple Devices for Free

Apple has just made it possible for anyone, even those who don’t own an Apple product, to access iCloud web apps. Previously, only those who owned an iOS device or Mac could use the online versions of Apple’s productivity apps including Pages, Keynote and Numbers.
From today, anyone can go to iCloud.com and access Apple’s apps in a similar fashion to Google Docs or Microsoft Office. The big difference though, is that Apple does not directly monetise the service. There are no ads or subscriptions and the apps can be used in Safari, Chrome, Internet Explorer or Firefox for free. However, free users only get 1GB of storage, while users of a Mac or iOS device get 5 GB of storage. Owners of Apple devices can pay for more.
The move is seen as significant, with Apple deciding to put themselves directly in competition with such services from Google and Microsoft. Whether they will pose any threat to those services remains to be seen.

Signal iOS app keeps your data secure from prying eyes

With continued reveals of more government spying no matter where you are in the world, many organisations have been clamouring for software that makes our communications so obfuscated through encryption and other measures, that it becomes a waste of time to try and decipher even the most banal conversations. One such application is Signal, which released a new version on iOS this week, effectively encrypting both voice calls and text messages for Apple hardware users.
Although there are other options for those wanting to secretively communicate with one another, as TechCrunch points out, Signal is one of the few apps that’s given the thumbs up by the American Civil Liberties Union and also hits every mark on the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s chart of message safety. That means that not only are messages encrypted in transit, but they are also encrypted so the provider can’t read them and the code is regularly checked by outside sources to confirm that it’s secure.

One of the biggest selling points of Signal though is that it’s made by a non-profit collective called Riddle Quiet Ventures, otherwise known as WhisperSystems, which is a team of developers that works with a collaborative group of open source proponents to develop privacy enhancing software, some of which was recently incorporated into WhatsApp’s code. Signal is just one piece of the puzzle it’s building.
“Together, we’re working to advance the state of the art for secure communication, while simultaneously making it easy for everyone to use,” reads the group’s site.
Currently Signal is only available on the App Store, but it has Red Phone and TextSecure counterparts on Android which perform the same function. There are also plans to bring Signal to Android in the future, unifying the two additional applications.

Apple Store Down Ahead of Watch Event

There are just a few hours until the Apple Watch event starts and the Apple Store is down in anticipation. At 5 PM GMT today, Apple will show off the new Apple Watch during the launch event and the store has been taken down to add and prepare for the new products without risking leaked information ahead of schedule.

Rumours also point towards the launch of an updated MacBook Air as well as new Beats headphones at the event, but there is no doubt that the Apple Watch will be the show stealer.

Major outage affecting all Apple services

Apple is experiencing a massive outage right now, which is affecting any and all services that require users to log-in. The outage has been reported from users on Reddit and Apple's own support forums.

The outage is affecting most Apple services, including the iOS App Store, iCloud, iTunes, Mac App Store, iTunes Connect, TestFlight, iBooks Store and more. The company hasn't commented about the outage just yet, but it has been affecting Apple services for a number of hours now.

iOS 8 Is Not Vulnerable To Viruses – Apple Removes Antivirus Apps From App Store

According to Apple, Antivirus applications on the App Store are giving a negative impression to users for iOS 8.2 vulnerability to malware attack. Hence, Apple decided to remove all third party virus hunting applications, coded to prevent potential damage from its App Store.

It seems the Cupertino giant wants to free its App Store from any antivirus applications and hence made them redundant. VirusBarrier developer, Intego ststaed that Apple removed its application from the App Store because it had a misleading and unclear description. Another attempt with refreshed description was uploaded which was turned down by Apple again.
iOS 8 Has No Vulnerable Elements To Be Exploited And Flawed

Apple has always had dilemmas with antivirus developing companies as Intego exclaimed that the same issue was raised with other companies as well, which aimed to provide virus-free solutions to the App Store. The chance that iOS 8 could be vulnerable to exploitable flaws is highly neglected by Apple and it has full control over the operating system.

Whatever Apple’s excuses or requirements may be for its antivirus program, VirusBarrier had no or very little to do with the iOS 8 operating system as a whole. Intego’s VirusBarrier was one such application that scanned cloud files and emails for any sort of threat and not the iOS 8 handling system. So the VirusBarrier application was useful for users who knew what it was intended for. Can this be that Apple had its own reasons to void the app from the App Store? However, users who already have the hold on VirusBarrier app, will continue to receive new features and updates by the passage of time. As long as the application resides in your iOS 8 device you are safe to receive them. However, restoring your iPhone to factory settings or deleting the application would enable you to forgo it forever.

Concerning safety of your iOS 8 device, there have been no reports from non-jailbroken devices to be affected by any kind of virus or malicious bug in the software if users stick to the App Store to download applications and not the third party sources. This case put its results in favor of Apple’s notion to deny any vulnerable elements in the iOS 8 software. Do keep in mind that viral applications like Masque Attack, Xagent and WireLurker have been discovered a few months back that may have a tendency to affect your iOS device so one can always be careful when handling critical data. The best safety technique to avoid any virus revelation will be to not opting for applications offered by third party developers. That’s all for now folks. Let us know in the comments if you have an infected iOS device that may cause distortion.

Revenue gap between iOS and Android apps is still growing

Traditionally, iOS apps have drawn more revenue than Android apps, but with Android’s sizable lead in global market share you’d think the gap was getting narrower. According to the latest data obtained by App Annie, it’s quite the opposite. In the first quarter of 2015, global revenue for the iOS app store was 70% higher than revenue from Google Play, up from 60% in Q3 2014.
The gain is attributed in large part to strong iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales in China, where demand for larger screens is particularly high. In fact, Apple devices accounted for 25% of all the smartphones sold in urban China during Q1 2015. Shipments of smartphones with screen sizes between 5 and 7 inches constituted roughly 60 percent of total smartphone shipments in the country.
App Annie notes that China surpassed the U.S. in quarterly iOS downloads in the first quarter of 2015 for the first time since it has been measuring per country downloads. This climb to the top was primarily driven by games and photo/video apps. Popular apps during the quarter include an app called Pitu which offers “beauty, make-up and cosplay filters”, as well as apps like IN and Fotoplace.
Despite coming out on top in terms of downloads, when it comes to overall iOS App Store revenue, China took the third spot after the U.S. and Japan.
Meanwhile, although it lost revenue to iOS, Google Play still registered a 70% uptick in downloads between the third quarter 2014 and first quarter 2015 thanks to its growing market penetration in Brazil, Mexico and Turkey.

1,500 iOS Apps Prone to Man-in-the-Middle Attacks Due to HTTPS-Crippling Bug

Some 1,500 iOS apps are vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks enabling attackers to intercept encrypted passwords, bank account details and other such sensitive information. This vulnerability cripples the security of HTTPS meaning that any information sent from an iPhone or an iPad including the login data could be intercepted using the HTTPS protocol.

AFNetworking code error enables MITM attacks on iOS apps:

According to the latest revelation by an analytics company SourceDNA, some two million people are at risk who have installed the vulnerable apps. These apps include some major names like Alibaba.com mobile app, Movies by Flixster with Rotten Tomatoes, and Citrix OpenVoice Audio Conferencing.
The vulberability comes from an older verson of the AFnetworking open-source code library that allows developer to drop networking capabilities into their apps or simply put, handle the connection to the server.

The issue occurs even when the mobile application requests the library to apply checks for server validation in SSL certificates. We tested the app [AFNetworking 2.5.1] on a real device and, unexpectedly, we found that all the SSL traffic could be regularly intercepted through a proxy like Burp without any intervention!
This bug cripples HTTPS and through MitM attacks decrypts HTTPS-encrypted data. Hacker intended to explout the bug can initiate a man-in-the-middle attack using a fake WiFi hotspot to intercept data. While this shouldn’t work normally with secure connections because fradulent credential would be detected as a counterfiet dropping the coonection, it is possible in this case because of the bug in the code rendering the apps unable to check the security certificate.
The report reveals that although AFNetworking has fixed the flaw three weeks ago with the latest version 2.5.2, the bug still infects some 1,500 iOS apps on the earlier 2.5.1 version introduced in January.
To be on the safe side and confirm if you are using any of the 1,500 infected apps, use the search tool developed by SourceDNA.

YouTube App Support To End On Older iOS, Apple TV Devices

Google’s YouTube app is the gateway to the world’s largest collection of digital videos, and is used by billions worldwide on a regular basis. On iOS, the native YouTube app that used to grace the platform has since been replaced by an App Store-based offering from Google, and while many were quick to protest this decision around the time of iOS 6, it still works as advertised despite its lack of nativeness. With API v3 now coming into effect, older YouTube apps based on API v2 will soon find the rug pulled from beneath them, and anybody using a YouTube app on iOS 6 and earlier will instead have to run with the web app.

The change, which commences from next month, will not only affect iPhones, iPads and iPod touches on iOS 6 or earlier, but older models of Apple TV. In fact, any app developed for YouTube that doesn’t include API v3 support will stop functioning very soon, but since the web app is fairly capable these days, this won’t be a disaster for most users.
The most recent, 1080p Apple TV will emerged unscathed from the changes, since it’s based upon API v3, but the second-gen model will be stuck without a working YouTube app. But if you do own an Apple TV — an older one, that is — and would like to continue getting your YouTube fix, there are one or two obvious solutions.

You could, for example, use your newer iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to beam content to your Apple TV through AirPlay, which is slightly less convenient but no great hardship if you’re a dedicated user. In fact, if you’ve tried navigating YouTube using only Apple’s near-useless official Apple TV remote, you’ll find that it’s quite inconvenient, and in pushing YouTube through your iOS device and over AirPlay, you will realize what you’ve been missing all this time.
Alternatively, you could also grab a Chromecast, which, since it’s produced by Google, will continue to support YouTube for years to come, and at around $30 / £30, it’s a good investment for those who’d like to Smart-ify their television on the cheap.
So, if you’re a big YouTuber, and aren’t running iOS 7 and up, begin to familiarize yourself with the web app that can be found over at m.youtube.com. If your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch is capable of running a newer version above iOS 7, then now would be the time to think about updating, although as we mentioned earlier, the web service is none too shabby, and you can just as easily continue using as normal via your browser.
Will you miss the old YouTube app when it finally kicks the bucket? We’d appreciate your comment, so do please leave your thoughts with us below.

WhatsApp Calling Finally Arrives For iOS

Android-using WhatsApp users have been able to take advantage of the newish voice-calling feature for a while now, and after a substantial delay, those on iPhone can now get involved. WhatsApp Messenger version 2.12.1 includes voice call support as standard, although unfortunately, you may still have to wait a while for it to reach you.

According to the changelog for the updated WhatsApp, “WhatsApp Calling is rolling out slowly over the next several weeks,” so even though you’ll have an app that has been primed and ready to make peer-to-peer voice calls, you may not see it until WhatsApp activates it for your device. This is a bit of a disappointment, but a more organized, regimented release will ease the burden on the servers and hopefully, improve the experience for all.
Since being taken over by Facebook, WhatsApp has seen quite a few changes and improvements. Only recently, a WhatsApp Web brought the instant messenger to the desktop browser, but while it has promise, it’s very much a work-in-progress for now. We’d like to think that the Web app will improve with time, and be afforded many of the features that are clearly missing, but for a first run, it’s functional.

The same should be said, at this point, of WhatsApp Calling. Having tested it out a few times on Android, even with strong signal on both sides, I have been hit by poor reception, and more than once, been forced to revert to traditional cellular phone calls in order to hold a conversation. Given that WhatsApp Calling is still very, very new, we certainly shouldn’t go expecting complete clarity, but once the dust settles and WhatsApp users grow familiar with the feature, one would hope that improvements will be made to overall usability.
So, if you try and call somebody on iOS after they’ve updated, they may still be waiting for the official green light from WhatsApp’s server side, and therefore, you may be met with a message that “[name] needs to update the app to receive WhatsApp calls.” This is appears to be the universal pop-up that appears whenever somebody tries to call a device that hasn’t been readied for calls, but in weeks to come, most folks on iOS and Android should be able to make calls without too many issues.
Calls are completely free of charge, which is very good news, but data usage rates do apply, so take care not to exceed your limits. If you can find a decent free Wi-Fi hotspot, though, then you’re good to go, and should be able to call without limitation provided those niggling signal / reception issues don’t come into play.
You can download WhatsApp Messenger 2.12.1 from the App Store.

Apple bans iWatches from telling the time

    Apple mean time only

Fruity Cargo cult Apple believes that only it has the right to tell its users the time of day. Apple has updated its App Store Review Guidelines to prevent developers from creating Apple Watch apps that display the time.

According to the newly added 10.7 rule under "User interface," Watch Apps that have a "primary function" of telling the time will be rejected.
According to MacRumors one developer who had his app rejected from the App Store due to the time telling rule, used a clock-like face to display sunset/sunrise times along with the position of the sun and the moon.
The developer was told by Apple that Apple Watch apps containing a clock face, the likeness of a clock, or time-telling functionality would be rejected, and the Apple employee he spoke with mentioned that quite a few developers had been rejected due to the policy.
    Apple Mean Time

Apple believes that only it should decide what the watch face should look like. It said that it is flogging the Apple Watch as an "incredibly accurate" timepiece, a claim that it might not be able to guarantee if a third-party time-telling app is allowed to display the time.
However there is a problem with this claim. Apple has consistently failed to write code which can handle changes in summer time and has occasionally sent Apple fanboys to work an hour late or early. We would have thought it far better to outsource the writing of such code to those who can actually do it.

Dropbox App for iOS Bringing Microsoft Office File Creation

The official Dropbox app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad has just been updated, adding a comment feature for collaborative users. The real news, however, is what’s coming up next, with the company having also announced big plans for subsequent updates, most notably the introduction of Microsoft Office document creation from right inside the app.

The cloud computing space is saturated right now, but while Apple, Google and Microsoft have all thrown weight behind their respective services, Dropbox is one of the field’s originators. The company capitalized on the need for versatile, reliable storage and backup solutions, which could also make it easier for consumers to share content and collaborate, and version 3.9 for iOS continues in this vein.
The Web version of Dropbox was recently graced with a commenting feature, permitting users to discuss files with one another and catch the attention of others with @mentions. After spending the past couple of weeks refining the experience, it’s now ready to roll out for iOS users, so if a collaborative working environment is essential to you, then snag this update as soon as possible.

Although we talk about Dropbox’s longevity in the cloud-computing game, it’s Google who has really pushed forth the idea of collaborative workflow through gApps, but the recent changes and improvements Dropbox has made suggest that it’s able and willing to compete with the search company in every aspect.
The update to Dropbox for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad also includes a brand-new Recents tab, making it very easy for you to view your recent activity in a quick-reference fashion. There’s also 1Password login extension support, which is particularly useful from a security aspect, and regardless of whether you’re dealing with sensitive information or not, we’d recommend everybody utilize the encryption and digital bolt-lock nature of 1Password.

As seen with almost every software update, there are also bug fixes and performance adjustments with the new Dropbox for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, but while this is more than worth the download, we can’t help but look ahead to what’s next. The Dropbox team will be bringing Microsoft Office document creation natively to the app in the near future, and this would seem a significant enough addition to warrant the jump to version 4.0.
As noted in an official statement on the Dropbox website, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files created will be stored in whichever folder is being accessed when the ‘Create Document’ button is pushed, and while there’s no precise time frame for this exciting feature, Dropbox’s estimate that it will appear “in the next few weeks” has us hoping that it’ll make the cut before the month’s end.

Apple announces 100 billion downloads from App Store

25 billion downloads in last 12 months
During its WWDC 2015 event, Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, has announced that Apple's App Store has reached a 100 billion apps downloads.

This is quite an impressive number considering that App Store launched back in mid-2008 and it needed almost four years to reach 25 billion downloads. Currently, App Store has over 1.5 million apps and it does not come as a big surprise that it managed to reach 100 billion downloads, with over 25 billion downloads in last 12 months. Many have criticized Apple for its App Store and while Google Play Store has reached 1.5 million apps earlier this year, it is those 1.5 million from Apple that matter and brought Apple to that 100 billion downloads number.
