Apple is offering 100 premium apps for just $0.99 each

Apple has launched a new promotion in which it’s offering 100 of the top games and apps in its App Store for less than a buck each. If you own an iOS device and don’t yet have plans for the weekend, well… now you do.
The sale is broken down into six categories: Apps for Photography Lovers, Apps for Kids, Smart Tools for Everyone, Game Hits, App Store Veterans and More Games to Explore. Or in other words, there’s no shortage of games to choose from.
Some noteworthy titles include Fruit Ninja, Cut the Rope 2, Real Racing 2, Goat Simulator, The Room Two, GoodReader and Pixelmator. Many of the apps originally sell for around five bucks but can all be had for $0.99 each.
It’s unclear if this is a limited-time sale or a new permanent fixture in the App Store. The wording Apple chose to use – “New Low Prices” – suggests this could be a long-term promotion instead of a random weekend sale. If you see something you want, however, I probably wouldn’t risk waiting… you know, just in case.
Digital Trends points out that a number of developers and studios taking part in the sale started tweeting about the price cuts yesterday using the hashtag #AppStoreOffers and the custom URL appstore.com/100.

This Is One Of The Best Third-Party iPhone Camera App Out There

iPhone camera apps are aplenty over at the App Store. Just dive into the Photo & Video category, and you’ll come to realize that the floodgates are overflowing with different offerings that give users something to mull over. But not all camera apps are great; some go above and beyond features which aren’t suited for the average Joe, while some fall short miserably. That’s where Obscura Camera comes in, which is a perfect blend of being advanced and minimalist at the same time.

From the get-go, you’ll realize that Obscura Camera is meant with ergonomics in mind. The app’s user-interface is designed in such a way that everything is just a thumb’s reach away, making it very comfortable to use on a day to day basis.
Ergonomics aside, the app is packed with features which should be there in every camera app as standard, including the stock one which ships as part of iOS for iPhone and iPad both. Users get the usual set of options, such as quick focus lock and quick exposure lock controls. Obscura Camera really takes off when you take into account that it also lets you manually control ISO settings and shutter speed. If you’re a pro photographer, then you would already know that these two settings alone are important for taking a great shot.
Obscura Camera also features three gird overlays, with rule of thirds, square and circle being the available options, so you can rest assured that you’ll get a perfectly aligned and weighted shot every single time you pull out your iPhone from your pocket.

And of course, there are live filters if you want to take your snaps to a whole new level. With nine live filters to choose from, you can preview each and every single one even before you even take a photo, so the user gets a rough image beforehand what he or she would end up shooting. Although there are nine filters, as we mentioned before, you can buy six more, which are available as an in-app purchase.
The developer promises to update the app with even more feature in the near future. And taking the app for a spin in its current form on one of our iPhones, it makes us wonder how it can be improved even further knowing it’s already in good shape.
The app is available to download from the App Store and costs absolutely nothing, with in-app purchases being available, ranging from $1.99 to $4.99. The app is only compatible with the iPhone and does not support the iPad natively just yet.

How To Add iTunes Pass To Passbook / Wallet App On iPhone

Here’s how you can add iTunes Pass to Passbook or Wallet app on iPhone. Once added, your iTunes Pass will be a thumb’s reach away.

Passbook, which has been rebranded to Wallet in iOS 9, is one place where you can store all your passes and credit cards for use in different locations. But little do people know that you can actually add your own iTunes Pass straight to Passbook or Wallet using a few simple steps. We’ll walk you through the process of how you can do just that, and explain the advantage of having it just a tap away.
Add iTunes Pass to Passbook / Wallet

    1. First and foremost, launch the App Store on your iPhone.
    2. Once the App Store is done refreshing and all the content is done loading, scroll all the way down till you reach the ‘Apple ID’ section as shown in the screenshot below. Tap on it.

    3. You’ll be presented with a pop-up, tap on ‘View Apple ID.’

    4. You will be required to enter your Apple ID password, do so when prompted for it.

    5. You’re now in ‘Account Settings’ for your Apple ID. Scroll down a little and you’ll see a button labelled ‘Add iTunes Pass to Passbook.’ Tap on it and you’ll be presented with your iTunes Pass with an ‘Add’ button on the top right hand corner. Tap that as well.

    6. Open Passbook or Wallet app to confirm that the process was successful. You can tap on your iTunes Pass to make it entirely visible on the display along with a QR code.

At this point you must be wondering why you would want to add your iTunes Pass to Passbook or Wallet? First of all, if you’re living in a supported country, you can actually use your iTunes Pass to top up balance to your account. Simply walk into an Apple Retail Store, present your iTunes Pass to a Specialist, tell him / her the amount of balance you wish to recharge, and it will be added to your iTunes Account using a QR code being displayed on your iTunes pass. And secondly, the iTunes Pass is the best way to see your remaining balance in real-time. Every single time you make a purchase on the App Store or the iTunes Store, your credit will be updated on the fly, giving you a quick glimpse of your financial situation when it comes to all things iTunes. If you’re not bothered by any of those two things we mentioned, then hey, having an iTunes Pass makes the Passbook / Wallet app look cool. Just putting it out there.

Yahoo Releases Livetext Silent Video Chat App For iOS, Android

Yahoo has just released a brand new app for iOS and Android called ‘Livetext.’ The concept of the app is simple – it’s live video chat without sound combined with traditional text messaging.

If you go through the App Store right away, you’ll be surprised to find a ton of social networking apps that support video calling right off the bat. With big names like Skype, Viber and Tango well established in what they do best, a new entrant has to struggle to climb to the top of the chain, until or unless it offers something which others aren’t. And this is what Yahoo is pinning its hopes on with the release of Livetext for iOS and Android.
The concept of the app is very simple and straightforward – it combines video chat without sound with the traditional convenience of text messaging. So basically, instead of ‘real’ sound to get a message across, users get to interact with others using plain old text, while also getting a live feed of their mugshot.

Yahoo claims that such a method of communication makes a user feel as if they are ‘right there’ with their fiends. We’re not sure how that works out, but it would be hilarious to see someone type something hysterical using text and watch the other person laugh silently for a good few seconds.

To make sure that spam and abuse does not take place, each Livetext session is one-to-one, and can only be initiated once both concerned parties have agreed upon it.

Yahoo had been silent (excuse the pun) for a long while when it comes to mobile apps, but lately it has started to pick up pace under the new leadership of Marissa Mayer. Though Livetext might sound like a ‘meh’ idea for a lot of users, but if you think about it, it’s actually a well thought-out piece of software that has the potential to go a long way if it gets the right traction. We’re absolutely certain from this point onwards that Yahoo will keep on pushing great apps like Livetext into the App Store and Play Store in the weeks and months to come, till then, all we can do is find someone who is willing to Livetext with us.

You can download Yahoo Livetext for iOS from here, and Android here. The app is absolutely free to download, and we suggest giving it a whirl before reaching any sort of conclusion regarding what it has to offer.

Use This App To Transfer Playlists From Rdio And Spotify To Apple Music

Apple Music is gaining popularity in competence with some of the leading music streaming services in the industry. However, users are finding it difficult to reallocate their playlists to Apple’s music streaming service. But little do they know about a handy trick that helps transfer playlists from Spotify and Rdio to Apple Music. So we are going to guide you to export your playlist to Apple Music from Rdio and Spotify.

‘Move To Apple Music’ is an app developed by two Californians that automates the operation to move your tracks and playlists from Spotify and Rdio to Apple Music. All this with just a click of a button. The application is exclusive to the Mac and supports the format of your tracks and playlists that is accepted by iTunes. In this regard, the blurb says, “We don’t block your computer while transferring your songs, feel free to use it,” More on pricing and availability will be detailed momentarily.
Migrate Your Rdio And Spotify Playlists To Apple Music

Talking about data access, the app uses the official login API from all services and henceforth, the app will not have a direct access to your data. “We use this great library called mitproxy in order to intercept the data iTunes sends to Apple’s server. In that way we can replicate exactly the same request as iTunes would do when you click on ‘Add to My Music’ button,” explains their FAQs.

Developers claim that in a period of eight days, their app has migrated over 150,000 songs. Once transacting your playlists to Apple Music from the host music streaming platforms, you will notice a minor 30 second delay between each migration. The delay is part of the migration in respect of the iTunes API. The app is essential for users who wish to migrate their tracks and playlists to Apple Music from Rdio and Spotify.
Move To Apple can be downloaded from the developers official source, MoveToApple and not the Mac App Store. The app is available for purchase via the PayPal account alone, charged at $4.99. Its a very useful app designed for easy playlist migration. We would totally recommend you to give this app a swirl and let us know how you guys liked it.

Free Up Valuable iPhone And iCloud Storage With Gallery Doctor

Ever come across a message on your iPhone that you cannot accomplish a specific task because the memory was full? It happens a lot, and the reason behind this is the limited storage on our smartphones and our inability to delete unwanted data on our devices. Most of us still use iPhones with 16 gigabytes of memory space which might not be enough if you use your device as a daily driver. Unfortunately, the iCloud storage is also limited, unless you’re willing to sacrifice some extra bucks.

However, app developers are well aware of your storage difficulties and steps have been taken to minimize your regrets. Gallery Doctor is one such app developed by Flayvr Media Ltd. that frees up space on your iOS device with minimum effort required. Basically, Gallery Doctor is an app that recognizes unwanted photos or videos and deletes them to free up space. It sounds like an app with a conscience, but it’s actually not.
Gallery Doctor Is Your Personal Gallery Manager

Gallery Doctor has the potential to automatically identify a set of photos and videos which are blurry, poor in quality, dark, identical, and even boring. The unwanted photos are then piled up for a review. In the review section you can swipe left to delete the picture or swipe right to keep it. This is sort of a confirmation to delete the pictures with the aforementioned characteristics.

Gallery Doctor is not done yet. By the passage of time, the app gets smarter by learning from your liking or disliking habits. It learns from the type of photos you delete and the type you usually keep. The suggestions for deleting photos only gets better over time. The app is like a personal antivirus for your gallery where all photos get deleted that are not set to a particular standard. You don’t have to spend hours trying to sort out the bad photos and then delete them, Gallery Doctor does that for you. The most important aspect is the free memory space that you get after all unwanted photos are deleted.

Gallery Doctor keeps you updated of your bad photos so you can clean your iPhone and free some valuable space with just a tap. If you are worried about privacy, Gallery Doctor does not store or share your personal photos with anyone at all. The app is available on the App Store for $2.99 and fully supports the iPhone. Do give this app a try and let us know about your awesome experience in the comments.
You can download Gallery Doctor from here.

OneDrive For iOS Updated: Improves VoiceOver, Brings Back File Download, More

Microsoft’s OneDrive app has been updated for iOS that brings three new noticeable changes to the roster. One of the induced changes include the ability to download videos and photos from OneDrive to the Camera Roll. This hiatus feature has been continued again after the app had a major redesign in the prior months. The updated OneDrive app the version number up to 5.5 that also contains support for Single Sign-On and VoiceOver improvements.

OneDrive is one of the many cloud based storage apps that aids in storing files on a cloud server. Let’s dive in to see what other changes are part of the update.
The Incarnation Of Downloading Photos And Videos

The download feature has once again made a comeback in OneDrive v5.5. The feature allows users to download and save their photos and videos from the cloud straight to the Camera Roll of their iOS device.
The procedure to download photos and videos is very, very simplistic. All you have to do is navigate to the folder of your photos that you want to download and tap the image or video to be downloaded to your Camera Roll in Photos app. Although it does require an Internet connection, so be sure to have one on standby before going ahead.

    Single Sign-On

Previously, you needed to sign-in to other Microsoft apps to access OneDrive. However, with this update, Microsoft has cancelled the previous sign-in program and replaced it with a Single Sign-On option. This feature enables users to sign-in to OneDrive only once without the need to be logged in to other Microsoft apps like PowerPoint, Excel or Word.
    VoiceOver Improvements

Apple has a well recognized and robust Accessibility feature which is devoted to users with disabilities. Microsoft has taken full advantage of Apple’s Accessibility feature and improved VoiceOver. Hence, OneDrive is now better for hearing-impaired users to interact with items on the display.

Apart from this, there also rests an improvement in sharing your photos and videos. The update prior to today showed lack of intuitiveness and native Share Sheet. Now, you can rearrange sharing options to your preferences along with a native Share Sheet linked to Facebook, Twitter and other apps.
If you don’t have OneDrive installed, it’s completely free of charge, so you can straightaway go to the App Store and grab it for your iOS device. After the initial download, Microsoft gives you 15 gigabytes of free storage. However, you can unlock another 15 gigabytes by enabling the automatic Camera Roll update option. If it still isn’t worth your data, then you can upgrade to more cloud storage via in-app purchases.

How To Create Custom iOS Keyboard Theme Using Your Photos

Here’s how you can create a custom iOS keyboard theme using photos which you have taken with your iPhone and iPad. At the end you’ll be left with a keyboard to use whose color combination is totally unique compared to anyone else’s in the world.
Apple made a bold move opening up iOS even further by providing an official keyboard API with the release of iOS 8, allowing developers to create one of a kind third-party keyboard apps for the iPhone and iPad which just wasn’t possible before on a stock level. The first wave of apps consisted of big names such as Swype, SwiftKey, Fleksy etc. but slowly and gradually countless others gave the whole ordeal a shot, expanding the horizon and giving birth to truly unique offerings. Photokeys is one such app, and allows the user to create a completely custom iOS keyboard theme using just the photos stored on your iPhone and iPad.

The way the app actually works is no rocket science at all. The first time you set out on your theme customizing odyssey, you’ll first need to pick a photo from your iOS device on which your keyboard theme must be based on. Once you’ve done that, you then pick a set of five colors right from the photo itself which are in turn integrated to the keyboard theme which you want to create. Once you’re done making those oh so crucial adjustments and finishing touches, you’ll be left with a custom iOS keyboard that’s completely unique in its own regard. Sounds simple doesn’t it? And trust us, it actually is.

The app allows you to either select a photo right from the device itself or you can snap one there and then, giving you more freedom in terms of customization options. But that’s not all, the keyboard also caters to the users among us who love to make use of emoji on a daily basis, therefore the developers have added a button directly on the keyboard, giving each one of us access to over 100 emoji characters on the fly. Rest of the features on the keyboard are pretty much standard, such as predictive text and autocorrection.
You can download Photokeys for iOS from here, and it costs just a dollar. The keyboard app supports both the iPhone and iPad natively, so you can rest assured that it will across all of your devices without any sort of problem.

Space For iOS Lets You Access Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, iCloud Drive In One Place

Every major cloud storage service has an official app for iOS, or any major platform for that matter. While it’s a great move that the companies behind cloud services have done the legwork for providing us with a solution for accessing our flies on the go, but some users, like us, would like to go an extra mile and would want to access everything in one place, under one roof. This is where a newly released ‘Space’ app for iOS comes in.
At first glance, Space for iOS might not look useful at all. But as soon as you read that oh-so important description, you’ll be pleased to learn there and then that the app combines five of the best and top cloud storage services right in one place.

In case you’re wondering, Space for iOS works with the following services:

    • Dropbox
    • OneDrive
    • Box
    • Google Drive
    • iCloud Drive

Space is actually a wonderful app in regard to what it does; it lets you view files from the aforementioned services on the go. But that’s not the best part – it even lets you upload and download content, transfer between cloud services, and even store your favorite files for offline use. Things really don’t get better than what Space for iOS is offering, it really does not.

If you’re a person who loves to manage files on the go, then you’ll be pleased to learn that Space lets you create and manage folders on the fly as well, and of course, sync files across those folders at any given time.
On the security front, Space is actually pretty safe to use as it does not store your passwords and everything is handled over a secure connection. In short: Space for iOS is a complete package for managing all your cloud storage needs on the fly while also keeping security in mind.

Since the app offers functionality beyond measure, hence it comes with a $2.99 price tag, which we believe is entirely fair for what this little offering is bringing to the roster. The app is also a universal one, which means that a single download will work across all of your iOS devices natively, which includes your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. You can download Space for iOS from here.
If you do happen to give Space for iOS a try on your iPhone and iPad, then be sure to let us know what you think about it in the comments section below.

The Pocket App Is Testing Recommendations In Upcoming Public Beta

The Pocket app has made it really easy to save your favorite content for a later read. Either its a piece of text to read or a video to watch, you can pocket it for future consideration. The Pocket app is super useful when you have limited time to read because something of greater importance comes up. However, over its eight years of life span, the app still lacks the ability to recommend articles to users on its own.

On that note, Pocket is said to be working on a program that would provide Recommendations to users. Before this is officially available, Pocket is opening a public beta for users who wish to try the upcoming feature and in turn provide the company with feedback. As we know, the Pocket app is available on iOS, Android as well as the web, recommendations would be a great addition to the app. The Recommendations tab will sit next to the My List tab where all your saved content is stored . Pocket will judge the stories you save to recommend stories that might interest you.
Pocket Will Soon Recommend You Interesting Stories

Instapaper is another read-it-later app that has an upper hand in contrast to Pocket because it already hosts the recommendation aspect integrated in the Browse tab. Before Pocket releases the final version to its 17 million users, beta users will provide the company with their feedback for the final evaluation of the app.
Pocket has an enormous goal, to build a ‘save button for the internet’ and with the upcoming update, it will surely get closer to it. The operation started last month when Pocket integrated its Save button by default in the toolbar of Mozilla Firefox. Pocket’s CEO and founder, Nate Weiner wrote on a blog post on Thursday:

“It’s a noisy world out there. The channels we use to discover the stories we’re interested in — Twitter, Facebook, and a slew of news readers, etc. — are dictated by page views and favor real-time, meaning great content has a relatively short lifespan. As a result, what’s good is constantly being pushed down by what’s simply new.”

With users already saving the best content, Nate points that there will be no further need to hunt for it. This will be a gigantic step for users and Pocket itself. The operation would envision people to “cut through the noise” and find the most interesting piece of content. However, this is a long term plan for Pocket and as for now the company has its focus on providing users with recommendations on their favorite stories.
If you want to download the public beta for Pocket’s preview for integrated Recommendations on iOS, sign up here.

Microsoft Launches A Fully Loaded Outlook App For Apple Watch

Microsoft has taken a step further on its support for the Apple Watch by updating its Outlook app for iPhone. If you already use the Outlook app on iOS then it relatively does a pretty good job on the Apple Watch too. But the latest update brings with it major changes which will improve functionality on Cupertino’s new wearable.

Prior to the latest update, Outlook users were limited to receive basic notification messages with no adequate interactivity. In the latest Outlook update for iOS, the Watch app now shows more of the email body and even provides the ability to reply to those messages. Microsoft has updated the Outlook app for the Apple Watch with a more native feel.
Let’s dive in to see what changes are part of the update.
Outlook Update Lets You Reply To Emails Directly From Your Wrist

The update makes the Outlook app way more functional than before. Once you have installed the update, you can now see incoming emails, access for upcoming appointments on the calendar, rich notifications with more of the email body and the functionality to interact with those notifications. With more of the message body in view, users can now decide on an initial glimpse whether or not to open an email. You can also respond to emails with handy messaging tools like canned responses, use of emoji, and if this isn’t relevant enough, you can always dictate your own message using Siri.

Other than the inbox management, Outlook update for iOS also features a new Glance on the Apple Watch. The Outlook Glance on Apple Watch shows an overall view of the inbox that shows read and unread emails. The information for upcoming events for the day on the calendar is also provided on the Outlook Glance. This makes it quite easy to schedule events with the least effort.

For a more clearer insight, here’s the entire changelog:

    • Get a quick glance of what’s happening in your Outlook Inbox or what’s next in your calendar just by swiping up from the Watch face. Just try it, you’ll love it.
    • Need more context? Catch up with unread emails during your busy day right from the Outlook Watch App. When it’s really urgent, just reply directly from your watch with the set of replies we’ve pre-written just for you. We also have emojis and voice dictation if you’re more than kind of person.
    • Never miss what’s really important to you. Get notified of important emails and take action immediately thanks to our custom notifications. Archive that. Schedule this for later. It’s easy as 1, 2, 3.

A dimension has been opened for the Apple Watch in terms of email management. Maybe other third-party developers can also use the same framework for more apps and provide more functionality for Apple Watch users. Those of you interested can download Microsoft’s Outlook for iOS directly from the App Store for free.

How Hackers Use Facebook and WhatsApp to Hijack iPhone’s Communications

Hackers have discovered how to use apps from the top charts of the App Store including WhatsApp, Facebook, Viber, and Skype to steal user data. Bypassing the security mechanism employed by Apple, hackers made sure that a user trusts a malicious app and downloads it, enabling attackers to steal the data silently.

The masque attack hijacks communications, steals data

After the leak of Hacking Team’s internal data in June, security researchers have been busy trying to find out what different techniques were used by the team in its endeavors to hack and spy on its targets. The group has served an elite clientele consisting of government departments and law enforcement agencies, including the notorious US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Latest information reveals that the iOS vulnerability helped hackers steal data from users by persuading iPhone users into installing malicious apps on their smartphones without their knowledge.
These aren’t the real apps of the services mentioned above but bogus clones replicating the authentic looks of the original apps. Apps, once installed, perform exactly like the real thing but are controlled by hackers giving them all the data (check the image below to see how a repackaged Facebook app demanded for all sorts of permissions) from the user’s iPhone. As mentioned above, bogus apps include malware versions of some top chart apps like Facebook, Twitter and more. Hacking Team modified these apps used and trusted by millions of users, making the clones look like the official apps all the while stealing data in the background. These modified apps utilized a “masque” attack technique which allowed them to install a modified app over the top of the official version by prompting user to install the bogus app.

According to the FireEye, security firm responsible for this discovery, a library injected into the modified apps could steal:

    • Photos; contact information; voice call recording in Skype, Viber and other services; text message interception in Skype, WhatsApp, etc; phone calls; SMS / iMessage content; Chrome web history; precise GPS coordinates; login credentials, and much more.

It’s almost like giving your entire data and online life in the hands of the hackers making the service quite useful to the clients, whoever they may have been in this particular case.
This spying method was first discovered by FireEye and reported to Apple last year and was patched in iOS 8.1.3. However, it is only today that we are hearing of this technique being wildly used by the hackers before the patch arrived. While the patch disabled apps from overwriting others, attackers can still modify the bundle identifiers and install these apps alongside the official apps, tricking users into installing them, outside of the App Store.
Bundle identifiers are actually configurable by the remote attackers. So for iOS devices above 8.1.3, although the Masque Attack vulnerability has been fixed (apps with the same bundle identifiers cannot replace each other), the attackers can still use a unique bundle identifier to deploy the weaponized app.
This attack doesn’t require a jailbroken iPhone making all the secure, officially updated smartphones equally vulnerable to the spying technique. While this technique works on all the major mobile operating systems including Android, researchers have only seen the attack being used against iPhone users.
To stay secure, make sure you never tap on Install outside of the App Store environment. These malicious apps aren’t hosted on the official App Store making all the downloads safe inside Apple’s own ecosystem. Users need to be aware of the phishing schemes and not fall for infected web links to stay safe from this kind of targeting.
