Kingston Cloud II Gaming Headset Review

    Introduction

Kingston is one of the biggest names in the PC industry, they’ve got a rock-solid reputation for creating some of the best and most popular storage devices on the market, such as their HyperX range of DDR memory and SSDs. They took the gaming world by storm with the release of their incredible Cloud gaming headset and while we suspected they couldn’t possibly make the original Cloud even better, Kingston seems to think otherwise.
“HyperX® Cloud II features a newly designed USB sound card audio control box that amplifies audio and voice for an optimal Hi-Fi gaming experience, so you can hear what you’ve been missing. Open up a world of detail other gamers will never know – the rustle of a camper’s boot, the scuttle in a distant vent. Its independent audio and microphone volume control lets you adjust not only sound volume but also mic volume and easily toggle Surround Sound 7.1 or the mic sound on and off. This next-generation headset generates virtual 7.1 surround sound with distance and depth to enhance your gaming, movie or music experience. Pinpoint your opponents’ location in the game and strike before he sees you coming.”
The Cloud II is the latest incarnation of their Cloud series pro gaming headsets. It promises improved performance and a very competitive price tag. It offers support for PC, Mac and PlayStation 4, with added bonus features such as virtual 7.1 surround. It certainly ticks a lot of boxes, so let’s stop beating around the bush and take a close look at what it has to offer.
    Features

    • Advanced USB audio control box with built-in DSP sound card
    • Hi-Fi capable with 53mm drivers for supreme audio quality
    • Hardware-driven virtual 7.1 surround sound
    • Comfortable, 100% memory foam on headband and leatherette cushions
    • Pro-Gaming optimized with closed cup design for passive noise cancellation
    • Compatible – USB connectivity for PC & Mac. Stereo compatible with PS4, Xbox One1 and mobile

In the box, you’ll find everything you need to get you started, as well as a few bonus extras such as the protective bag, soft fabric ear pads, detachable microphone and the 2-to-1 3.5mm adapter.

The in-line controller comes fitted with a gold-plated USB connection on one end and a 3.5mm connector port on the other. It’s not the most complicated controller ever, but it does give you quick command over game and chat volumes, as well as the virtual surround functions.

The microphone boom is fully flexible and adjustable, with a sturdy 3.5mm jack plug and a large foam windshield.

The headset its self is pretty understated in terms of design. You’ve got the matte finish on the ear cups, with a brushed aluminium back plate; aside from a few silver highlights it’s a fairly basic design overall.

The ear cups can be angle adjusted slightly to allow a better fit over your ears.

The sturdy headband adjustment slider has a good range to it, so user compatibility should be pretty high.

The ear cups are quite large and designed to fit over the ear. The soft leather pads come pre-fitted, but they can be removed and swapped out for the soft fabric covers that were included in the box.

The basic 3.5mm cable comes hard-wired into the bottom of the headset and there’s a small protective cover over the microphone connector, perfect for when you just want to use the headset as headphones.

The headband comes with a stitched HyperX logo and is really nicely finished, it’s also in keeping with the smart and understated design of the rest of the headset.

The microphone fits in easy enough and the thick mould around the 3.5mm jack plug helps lock it firmly into place.

Noontec Zoro II HD Foldable Headphones Review

    Introduction

If you're often travelling on public transport or on the plane, it's likely that you have a pair of quality audio accessories that always make the trip with you. For those who aren't a fan of in-ear products and are looking for a little more extended comfort and extra noise-cancellation, Noontec has designed and released its Zoro II HD with you in mind.

The Zoro II is priced in the middle ground of most quality name-brand travel accessories, offering you general comforts like a handy fold-able design, detachable cable and leather to contact softly with your head.

Would I trust this product with my trusty ears on a train ride into university or long-haul flight to a technology expo? Well, I've already taken it on one of those things, so read on below.

    Specifications

Featuring plush synthetic leather ear cups and a smooth thin leather headband, comfort is one of the first things that comes to mind when you're looking at something for travel. Weighing in at 5.7 ounces (164 grams), it's around half of what you would expect for general gamer-grade headsets - as most use on their home PCs.

Connected through a single and removable 3.5mm jack and cable (with in-built microphone), the 30mm drivers provide you with a 13~26,000 Hz frequency response, a 180 dB sensitivity at 1 Khz 1mW and a maximum power of 60mW.

The cable is long enough for most, rated at 1.2M, flat in design and feels rubberized. I haven't had any issues so far of the cable being hopelessly tangled when stored at home or in the carry bag.

The headphones claim to be noise cancelling, however, it seems that there is no active noise cancelling technology happening here, they're just able to clock out noise due to their on-ear design.

    Pricing & Availability

Checking out Amazon, we found the Noontec Zoro II HD foldable headphones listed for #99.99 at the time of writing.

    What's in the box?

Featuring the suede carry case, detachable 1.2m flat rubberized cable and user manual, once again, it's quite a simple package and is what you should expect for such an item.

The carry pouch feels nice and is quite soft, which will help keep the shiny headband and structure on this product clean, fresh and free of scratches. This is coupled with the great detachable cable - due to its flat design I've had no tangling issues when it's curled up and stored inside the bag.

The package is light and small, meaning when ordered online your shipping costs should be greatly reduced when compared to other products.

PRICING: You can find the Noontec ZORO II HD Headphones for sale below. The prices listed are valid at the time of writing but can change at any time. Click the link to see the very latest pricing for the best deal.

United States: The Noontec ZORO II HD Headphones retails for $99.99 at Amazon.

Sound Blaster Tactic3D Rage Wireless V2 Review

It would be fair to say that for a number of years Creative, and their Sound Blaster range, have been industry leaders in the PC audio market. From their beginnings in sound cards we now find their technology in external devices, internal cards, built on to motherboards and then even when some boards don’t have the Creative hardware, they can have Creative software to enhance the audio solution. In today’s article we take a look at another category completely with a PC, Mac and PS4 compatible wireless gaming headset. This is our Sound Blaster Tactic3D Rage Wireless V2 Review.
Sound Blaster Tactic3D Rage Wireless V2 Review – Packaging and Bundle

Creative package this headset in a fairly chunky box which covers a number of the key features as well as giving us a decent view of the product itself though a window. There is a bundle of documentation inside as well as our key items. Those start with the USB charging cable, wireless dongle and removable mic. On the wireless adapter front, it is a fairly simple unit (as it should be) with status LED and connect button should we experience any loss of signal. As far as the mic goes, this is a noise cancelling condenser type with frequency response of 100Hz – 6.5kHz. Impedance is set at <2.2k Ohms with -40dBV/Pa sensitivity.
Sound Blaster Tactic3D Rage Wireless V2 Review – The Headset

With the Tactic3D Rage Wireless V2.0 we have a headset which is primarily a matt plastic construction. There are two metal bars in the arms which help us extend the length by around 1 inch on either side though. Up at the headband area we have a branded top, though it is discreet branding, and a significant amount of padding.

Astro A40 + Mixamp M80 Xbox One Headset Review

    Introduction

I’m very excited about today’s review, as we’ve got another product in from the incredible brand that is Astro. My excitement comes from the fact that every product I’ve tested from the Astro range has quickly stood out as some of the best products in their respective categories and I’m hoping for a repeat performance from their latest product, the Astro A40 (Gen2) + Mixamp M80 for Xbox One.
The Astro product range is designed with eSports in mind, but also tailored towards the enthusiast gamer in general. As such, the Astro product ranges do command a premium price tag. The setup I’ll be testing today will set you back £170, similar in price to premium headsets from Turtle Beach, Tritton, Razer and more. Of course, paying a lot for a headset brings a lot higher expectations; at this price range you’ll want premium build quality, performance and a few bonus features in return for your investment.
The A40 comes bundled with everything you’ll need to get you setup on your Xbox One, including an Astro M80 Mixamp.

The Mixamp is really nicely designed, with the main volume wheel at the front, which also features a microphone mute switch in the centre.

There’s an EQ button, as well as a game and voice volume channel switches on the top.

The headset just oozes premium quality the moment you look at it. A mixture of soft cream on the headset, removable and customisable backplates on the ear cups and the stylish blue highlights everywhere else; it’s certainly unique in terms of design, but no doubt that it looks stunning.

    BlueAnt PUMP HD Sportbuds Review

    INTRODUCTION

We are all well aware that wires are almost a thing of the past in most areas of the industry and although at least currently wireless connections can't offer the same exact results still its preferred by most people since simply put it's far easier to deal with. Now for home use i truly believe that wires still have much to offer whether we're talking about headsets, speakers, gaming peripherals and pretty much everything else which is also why i prefer them as well but when away from home or the office things change drastically since comfort is what people care about the most (myself included). Now as i already mentioned in our previous review recently i started running in order to keep in shape so i started looking for a good Bluetooth wireless stereo set to listen to music and answer calls since i can't stand tangled wires and BlueAnt was ontop of my list with their latest PUMP HD Sportbuds model.

BlueAnt is a global communications company dedicated to connecting people to the sounds that keep them advancing confidently through life. From delivering pulse-pounding beats to push someone beyond their limits to making sure every detail of a career-changing call is received without interruption, we feel audio sits atop the five senses. Our devices integrate highly advanced technology in such a way as to not overpower the user. We innovate when it will improve the customer experience, not for the sake of innovation itself.

The PUMP HD Sportbuds is very much alike the SPORT Wireless+ by Jabra so once again we get two ear pieces connected together via a rather short flat tangle-free cable which makes it nearly impossible for them to fall from you while performing various intense activities like running and/or exercising. Also much like the SPORT Wireless+ the PUMP HD is waterproof (although it features a more advanced IP67 certification) thanks to the Kevlar and Teflon material used to seal the interior of the enclosures while the rubber coating on the exterior makes it easier for your ears to adapt. Under the hood BlueAnt has placed two 12.5mm drivers featuring their Energize HD audio technology (according to BlueAnt it produces audiophile-grade audio) along with Bluetooth v3.0 connectivity (supports A2DP, AVRCP, HFP, HSP, APTX, ACC) and a rechargeable battery capable of powering the device for up to 8 hours of continuous use. Unfortunately size-wise the PUMP HD Sportbuds are quite larger compared to the SPORT Wireless+ by Jabra but if they deliver on what BlueAnt promises that shouldn't be a problem.

    Introduction

At first we would like to thank Corsair for sending a sample of their Gaming H1500 Dolby Gaming Headset for testing and reviewing.

    About Corsair:

Creative Sound Blaster X7 Deskop DAC & Amplifier Review

    Introduction

A lot of attention gets put on high-end displays and graphics, but while technology has made great advances in pushing graphics to 4K monitors, 3D displays, and all kinds of other cool stuff, I see a lot of people neglecting their audio experience, be that as part of their home cinema setup, or their desktop audio. While I must admit that motherboard technology has made huge advances, with many brands such as MSI and Gigabyte for example, putting high-end audio hardware directly onto their motherboards, I have yet to hear one that was comparable to a standalone unit.
    Audio Performance

    • Signal-to-Noise Ratio (DAC): 127dB
    • Signal-to-Noise Ratio (ADC): 123dB
    • 24-bit recording sampling rates: 44.1, 48, 96, 192 kHz
    • 24-bit playback sampling rates: 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, 192 kHz
    • Stereo Direct Playback at 24-bit / 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, 192 kHz
    • Surround Playback at 24-bit / 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96 kHz
    • Dolby Digital Decoding

    Frequency Response

    • 20 Hz – 90 kHz (24-bit/192kHz)

    Maximum Power Output

    • 27W + 27W (8Ω, 1kHz, 10% THD)¹
    • 27W + 27W (8Ω, 1kHz, 10% THD)²

    Rated Power Output

    • 37W + 37W (4Ω, 1kHz, 1% THD)¹
    • 35W + 35W (4Ω, 1kHz, 1% THD)²
    • 22W + 22W (8Ω, 1kHz, 1% THD)¹
    • 20W + 20W (8Ω, 1kHz, 1% THD)²

    Total Harmonic Distortion

    • 0.05% (1kHz, 4Ω, 33W)¹
    • 0.05% (1kHz, 4Ω, 30W)²

¹ Requires upgrade to high power AC-DC adapter (24V 6A)
    ² Using bundled AC-DC adapter (24V 2.91A)

Creative and their Sound Blaster range have a lot of years experience in the audio business, unless you’ve been lost on a desert island for the last couple of decades, you will have heard of them and many of you have either owned or used their products in some context at least once. I’m seeing more and more desktop AMP and DAC hardware in recent years and as the music industry continues to push away from crude quality MP3’s that plagued early MP3 players years ago, higher bitrate audio files, high-quality audio streaming services and a whole lot more are now offering up audio in up to 24-bit/192kHz high-resolution formats.

If you’re investing £300+ into a 4K monitor and god knows how much more in graphics cards, a CPU and other components, is it really too much to set aside another £329.99 to get your audio on par with the rest of your setup? That’s what I hope to find out today.
First, let’s take a quick look at a full walkthrough with Ryan Schliepier of Creative, at the level of features included in this setup, because if I were to put them into writing, I’ll be doubling the size of this review; prepare to be blown away by the feature set on this unit!
This is a premium grade product, so as you would expect, it comes with virtually every kind of connection you could possibly need. One thing that did really surprise me is that the unit comes with five power cables, FIVE! No matter where you are in the world, you shouldn’t have a problem plugging this thing in.

All the cables that are included are of a high quality and will help you get this thing plugged in and setup from day one.

This funny looking thing is a headphone stand and we’ll take a close look at how that works in a few minutes.

The unit is very nicely designed and while it is quite big, it’s not so big that it would be imposing on your desktop. The shape of it also means it takes up less cubic space on your desktop and aesthetically speaking, it’s a lovely looking bit of kit.

As you saw in the video above, the unit has a great range of connections. On the front panel you’ve got a gorgeous volume dial, which was infinite rotation in either direction, rather than a lock to lock volume dial. There’s headphone jacks for both 3.5mm and 1/4″ and a microphone line-in for those who like to use a dedicated mic. Then you’ve got the power/Bluetooth and SBX control switches. In the middle there’s some ventilation, behind which you’ll find two beam-forming microphones.

On the right side, you’ll see a small NFC logo, you can tap your phone or any other NFC compatible device and immediately sync up the audio through the unit. This is great for playing songs from your phone or tablet, but it can also be used to make hands-free calls via the built-in microphones and your own speakers or headphones.

Around the back, we see a plethora of connections. You’ve got options for 4ohm and 9ohm impedance for two bare wire terminals and RCA/Jack outputs for 5.1 setups. There’s stereo line in, optical passthrough and USB, not forgetting the built-in Bluetooth support; if you’ve got anything audio related, you can connect it!

All the fittings are of a premium quality, with gold-plated ports and high-quality screw fittings for the wire terminals.

At the top, there’s some passive cooling holes and two small holes for mounting the headphone stand.

The headphone stand is optional and is perfect for keeping your favourite set within easy reach.

Down the left side, you’ll find a USB Host port, perfect for charging your phone or even your headset.

On the underside, there’s a removable cover, behind which you can see some of the workings of the AMP/DAC. Here you can see the removable op-amps, which you can replace yourself if you have the money and the desire to do so.

Overall, this is one stunning looking setup and no, the headset in the picture isn’t included in the bundle, but I figured a Creative brand headset would look nice on the stand.

Turtle Beach XO Seven Pro Gaming Headset Review

    Introduction

Turtle Beach is one of the most easily recognisable brands in gaming, having many award-winning and very successful products on virtually every format. While Turtle Beach have been a popular choice for many at home gamers, they’ve also proven time and time again that they can deliver great headsets for the competitive gaming market and with the constant rise in popularity of eSports, there’s certainly a lot of demand for high-end hardware from consumers.
The Turtle Beach XO Seven Pro is designed for competitive gaming on Xbox One, with the added bonus of mobile device support for those who also love to game on the go.
“Raise your game on Xbox One with the Ear Force® XO SEVEN Pro featuring the new Ear Force Headset Audio Controller Plus which adds Superhuman Hearing, Game and Mic Presets, Mic Monitoring and more! Whether you are on the MLG Pro Circuit or just want to be, the XO SEVEN Pro has the tournament-grade durability, amazing sound quality and features you need to win. Plus, with the included Mobile Cable with In-Line Mic, the XO SEVEN Pro will be your headset of choice for mobile calls, music and gaming on the go.” – Turtle Beach
It also comes equipped with all the features you would expect from a competitive headset, with microphone monitoring, audio EQ presets, game/chat audio control and “Super Human Hearing” which is effectively dynamic range control.

The headset comes equipped with everything you’ll need to get you started; two braided cables, one for the Xbox One and one for mobile devices, a detachable microphone, USB recharging cable and the controller hub.

Since the Xbox One doesn’t come with its own headset connector, Turtle Beach has supplied a feature packed unit that connects to the controller. It has buttons for the game and chat volumes, microphone and game EQ preset controls, a master mute button and the Super Human Hearing button; a great range of features for any gamer.

Both of the main cables are of a very high quality and come with a high-quality braiding.

The headset comes hard-wired with a short cable and a proprietary connector. You’ll notice on the image above that the mobile cable also comes with a call button on this connector, meaning you don’t have to reach for your device just to answer a call. It also has a built-in pin-hole microphone, so no need for the boom mic!

The XO Seven Pro is really nicely designed and while there are a lot of plastics on show, they’re of a very high quality; the headset manages to feel very durable while maintaining a low weight.

A plain black headset could look a little boring, but there’s a tiny touch of green trim around the headset that gives it some added flair.

The ear cups can be rotated inwards, which is perfect for wearing the headset around your neck between games, but combined with a small amount of pivot, it’ll also help you get a good fit over your ears.

The ear cups are padded with a soft glossy look leather that feels incredibly comfortable over your ears. There’s also a soft cloth back on the drivers with the Turtle Beach logo printed on them.

As you would expect from virtually any headset, the headband is extendable; it has a good range to it and it locks firmly into place at each stage.

The headband has been covered with some thick padding and some stitched leather, meanings it’s very comfortable and hard-wearing.

The detachable microphone is a welcome bonus, as it means the XO Seven double up nicely as headphones. Also, not everyone wants the boom microphone in front of their face all of the time.

Sentey Symph SP GS-4531 Elite Gamer Series Headset Review

    Introduction

As the summary states, Sentey is new in the mainstream peripheral market and has a difficult mission on their hands - can they stand up to the big names already in the business?

In this review, we will be comparing this 7.1 digital surround sound headset with other companies' offerings, including the previously-reviewed CM Storm Ceres 500. One major thing that this headset has going for it is the low price point of $29.99 and the fact that it's providing you with a whole 7.1 experience - what about the rest?

    Specifications

Providing you with 7.1 digital surround-sound through the use of an inbuilt USB sound card, the 40mm drivers on offer push out a sensitivity of 98 +- 3 dB while the product weighs in at only 258g.

Sentey has provided a great cable length of 9.8 feet which sees the USB 2.0 connection help push out the impedance of 32 Ohms and a frequency response of 12 ~ 25KHz. The ear cups are made of synthetic leather and the headband is adjustable through many different stages. There's also the in-line volume and microphone control box included which is lit up with red LEDs as seen with the actual product itself.

The microphone has its own sensitivity of -38 +- 3dB and nominal impedance of 2.2 kO which all runs through the USB PC input.

    Pricing & Availability

The Sentey Symph is extremely cheap at only $29.99 when priced on Amazon, seeing it fall in a category too low for free shipping - it's the cheapest headset we have reviewed to date.

    What's in the box?

Featuring a handy user manual, driver CD, and apparently a carry-bag, this headset comes with everything that you need for your peripheral.

The reason I say 'apparently' when I mentioned the carry bag is that it is listed online as being included with the product, but my sample did not include this option for reasons unknown to me.

What is great about this product is the Velcro tie that neatens and helps you coil the extremely long cable. This is something that Tt eSPORTS has been doing for some time with their products, but it seems other companies have not yet joined on to the idea.

The driver CD is recommended as if you have slow internet like we do here in Australia, the 62.5mb download may cause you an extended wait.

SOUL Electronics introduces its Bluetooth Run Free Pro earbuds

Consumer electronics company SOUL Electronics has introduced the Run Free Pro, Bluetooth-powered in-ear headphones designed for athletes. The waterproof in-ear unit also includes wind noise reduction technology to help eliminate wind interference, which often times can ruin audio quality.

The custom design is guaranteed to stay in your ears using an interchangeable lock system, so athletes and active users don't need to worry about earbuds falling out. The Run Free Pro uses Bluetooth 4.0 and is now available with a $129 MSRP.

"The Run Free Pro exemplifies an audio accessory that perfectly complements hitting the streets for a run or sustaining an active lifestyle," said Jerry Lai, Marketing Manager at SOUL Electronics. "This means as someone is running and, often times, earbuds will fall out, the lock will securely keep the earphone body tight and in place. We wanted to create more products for the fitness and active lifestyle, with the goal to maintain the same SOUL Electronics brand identity."

Athletes are always on the lookout for earbuds and headphones they can use while running, cycling or otherwise enjoy the outdoors - and while there are a growing number of options available - it can still be extremely difficult to figure out which products to purchase.

    Review: Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma

    Introduction

When buying a headset the PC gamer is spoilt for choice but also potentially overwhelmed, particularly when considering the number of buzzwords that are thrown around. The phrases gaming headset and true/virtual surround sound are deployed liberally while the open versus closed descriptors tend to be reserved for stereo headsets of the non-gaming variety.
The subject of today's review, the Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma is firmly situated in the gaming audio camp with 7.1-channel virtual surround sound and the gaming headset moniker. Coming to market with a price point of £90 ($100) the Kraken 7.1 Chroma hopes to wow gamers with virtual surround sound, RGB LED controls and an 'enhanced digital microphone'.
    Build quality and design

The Kraken 7.1 Chroma is an identical headset to the Kraken 7.1 Classic except with the addition of RGB LEDs to help the headset blend in with Razer's other RGB-enabled peripherals. The Kraken 7.1 Chroma features a closed design with circular ear-cups and 40mm neodymium drivers.
The build quality of the Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma lacks a premium feel due to the extensive use of plastic and faux-leather. The lack of aluminium in the construction of the frame leaves some cause for concern over long-term durability. Along the headband there's a distinct lack of padding which Razer has attempted to balance with a cloth covering. Resultantly, the fit on the top of the head is not as comfortable as it could be.

Each of the ear-cups conforms to a circular shape with thick padding that users with small ears will find immersive and comfortable. Users with larger ears will find that the small circular design fails to enclose the ear but instead pushes down onto them leading to sound leakage and some discomfort.
The strong clamping factor of this headset further impacts upon comfort, though gamers with smaller heads will find comfort is significantly better. An initial stretching out of the headset, by pulling the headphones a safe distance apart a few times, dramatically improves the comfort levels, because the stock configuration is particularly unforgiving. Coming in at 340g means weight-related fatigue is minimal, and any fatigue that does occur is primarily down to the clamp fit.
One of the niftier aspects of the Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma is the discrete microphone which can be stowed inside the left headphone when not in use. The non-detachable microphone features a similar LED lighting system to the ear-cups. Users can configure the behaviour and colour of the RGB LEDs using the Razer Synapse software.

    Sound Blaster E5 Review

Motherboard manufacturers have made great strides in recent years with regard to audio quality. Better controllers, better capacitors, shielding, separate PCB areas, amps. It could have significantly impacted Creatives business however they have been smart about the whole situation, working with some manufacturers to build their hardwar onto boards, and with others to implement software based solutions that enhance the audio experience. The laptop market has some way to go though in sound quality and of course more and more people are using smartphones for their audio needs. Today we take a look at a product which is designed to enhance all of these (Desktop, Laptop and Smartphone) in our Sound Blaster E5 Review.
Sound Blaster E5 Review – Packaging and Bundle

The Sound Blaster E5 arrives in a fairly compact box which shows a nice clear image of the device as well as noting a number of the key features. Inside we get the product documentation as well as a stand for the unit which allow us to position it tilted on our desk (or mount on a stand) and then we get 2 cables. One is an optical cable and the other a mini USB to USB which can be used for connecting to a desktop/laptop or flipped round for smartphone use.

Apenas uma demo técnica de um sistema de som3D de jogo, usando ray-tracing para calcular efeitos de som num nivel de Quake 3.
O efeito é um pouco exagerado, mas mostra bem o potencial da tecnologia.
