LG’s G-Watch Urbane shows huge design improvement

LG is taking inspiration from Motorola’s circular smartwatch, the Moto 360, with its new wearable, the G-Watch Urbane, featuring a circular watch face and a more premium look. LG initially announced the G-Watch Urbane earlier this month but it has since shown it off in a new promo video.
The new G-Watch will be running Android Wear and it basically sports the same hardware as the G-Watch R, with an IP67 dust and water resistance rating, thinner bezel and a new gold or silver trim.





Further details, like a price and release date, have yet to be confirmed but all will likely be revealed at the Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona. At the event we will also see several new LG smartphones, along with Samsung’s new competitor, the Galaxy S6 and HTC’s One M9, which has already leaked.

LG announces Watch Urbane LTE

700 mAh battery, VoLTE meets fancy design
LG is obviously very serious about smartwatches, as it is about to announce its fourth watch, but this one is not based on Google's Android Wear operating system.

Just two weeks after it announced a fancy looking LG Watch Urbane, it has a follow-up with the Watch Urbane LTE, a unique version of the Urbane watch.
The new Watch Urbane LTE has 700 mAh battery and Snapdragon 400 at 1.2GHz. Since Snapdragon is LTE capable, we believe LG is simply using the feature form the chip. The Korean press release also lists 802.11 b, g, n, Bluetooth 4.0LE, NFC as well as a speaker and microphone in the feature list.
The watch has a 1.3-inch P-OLED 320x320 screen with 245 ppi, and has 1GB LPDDR3 memory and 4GB eMMC. It is IP67 certified and as you can imagine the 1.7 increase in battery size from 410 mAh with LG Watch Urbane to 700 mAh will make it heavier, but should make it last longer. An LTE modem needs a lot of power, too.
LG will introduce this LTE capable watch at Mobile World Congress 2015 next week in Barcelona and this should be the world's first LTE communication module mounted on a watch.
You should be able to use VoLTE LTE based voice service and fast data transmission and reception. LG promises an NFC wallet feature for simple electronic payments, as well as three functional buttons. We are not sure if the watch comes with a nano-SIM card tray, or how LG plans to make a watch work on carriers, ie if you will need a voice plan or will it simply work with an LTE capable data plan. We can only hope that most people buying this LTE watch will have calls via a Bluetooth headpiece as otherwise it will look really silly in action.
The watch looks expensive, there is no doubt that it will probably cost as much as a good phone. Our educated guess would put this one close to $499 in the US or €499 in Europe, but we hope we are wrong about it. Fudzilla expect the Urbane non-LTE watch should sell for about $349 but this is nothing we can confirm, just our best guess. As for the OS on the Urbane LTE, you do the guessing.

LG's unveils Watch Urbane LTE, lets you make calls from your wrist

Ahead of Mobile World Congress, LG has just unveiled the LTE-capable version of its Watch Urbane. Watch Urbane LTE will be better detailed during MWC 2015 by LG next week.

The new LTE-capable smartwatch is just a great-looking wrist-mounted cell phone, with the ability to make voice calls without the need of a smartphone. Not only that, but the Watch Urbane LTE is also capable of translating foreign speech, take voice calls, share your GPS location, track your fitness, and monitor your heart rate and atmospheric pressure. Also, just in case, there's an SOS button that lets you place an emergency call to your contacts.

LG has also baked in NFC capabilities that allows for NFC-based payments to be made, something that is exclusive to the Watch Urbane LTE right now. The new LG Watch Urbane LTE features a 700mAh internal battery, up from the 410mAh in the non-LTE versions. As for the OS, it runs LG's proprietary wearable platform, and not Android Wear like competing smartwatches.

MWC 15: LG Demos WebOS Smartwatch ("Urbane LTE")

A while ago, LG licensed WebOS from HP for use in their smart TVs and, as we found out during CES, smart watches.
The LG Urbane LTE is one such device, and we can finally see it in action. It is based around (literally) a circular P-OLED display (320 x 320, 1.3-inches, 245 ppi). Swirling your finger around the face scrolls through the elements like a wheel, which should be significantly more comfortable to search through a large list of applications than a linear list of elements -- a lot like an iPod (excluding the Touch and the Shuffle). That said, I have only seen other people use it.

The SoC is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400, clocked at 1.2 GHz. It supports LTE, Wireless-N, Bluetooth 4.0LE, and NFC. It has 1 GB of RAM, which is quite a bit, and 4GB of permanent storage, which is not. It also has a bunch of sensors, from accelerometers and gyros to heart rate monitors and a barometer. It has a speaker and a microphone, but no camera. LG flaunts a 700 mAh battery, which they claim is “the category's largest”, but they do not link that to an actual amount of usage time (only that it “go[es] for days in standby mode”).

LG details its Watch Urbane smartwatch in its latest video

MWC 2015 - LG detailed its new Watch Urbane and Watch Urbane LTE smartwatches at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, but the new Watch Urbane isn't so different from the current Watch R from LG.




The LG Watch Urbane has some external changes against the Watch R, with a thinner unibody case. Both of the smartwatches are powered by Android Wear, with a heart rate monitor on the back of the watch. On the front, we have a 1.3-inch P-OLED display with a 320x320 resolution, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor at 1.2GHz and a 410mAh battery. LG is promising around 30 hours of battery for normal use.

The LG Watch Urbane features a 1.3-inch P-OLED display with a 320x320 resolution display, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 400 processor at 1.2GHz, and a 410mAh battery. The Watch Urbane replaces LG's Watch R as the flagship wearable from the South Korean electronics giant.

The Most Up To Date Smartwatch The LG Watch Urbane LTE is finally here

At Mobile World Congress 2015, LG finally showed up with two smartwatches. One of them is called LG Watch Urbane LTE which is an android wear primarily made up of stainless steel and also uses an entirely new operating system based on WebOS. This is one of the most premium looking gadgets ever seen in the history.

The most upgraded Smartwatch on the move

The primary thing that you’ll probably notice in this smartwatch is its unusual designing and a more heavier outer look, that is probably to make a room for additional equipment required for the LTE model initially. Antennas in the watch will also enable the users to connect to Bluetooth, Wifi and LTE networks.
The LTE model is quite larger in size but its still similar in many aspects to the Watch Urbane with its aluminium housing style. This watch has three buttons on the side. One of them enables you to access the home screen, one is to go to the setting menu and so on. The band of this watch is more like a sportswatch and gives the watch a more classy and sleek look. In addition to the above mentioned qualities of the watch, it also possess a heart rate monitor which is a true indicator of how nicely it is designed to cater all things that are required to be featured on a fitness focused wearable.
The software the watch is installed and running with is “LG Wearable Platform” OS, which is a WebOS based software. However this is a similar software to that which was used on LG smart TV’s except that it has got some modifications according to wearable settings. Carousel view of apps is used in an unusual circular design where the users can scroll through to view apps.


This watch also enable and allows its users to directly attend the call and to send and receive a text message with an on-screen enabled easy to use keyboard. Since this is an LTE enabled watch, a high end battery is used which is approximately 700mAh. Although the battery power is still not what we are sure of but it seems to have a greater backup time than any watch being released ever before.

Now I’m sure that everyone reading eTeknix is very familiar with the need to be protected. You’ve all got the right anti-virus software on your machines, all properly configured. Those of you who have Android phones too, I’m sure you take all the measures necessary to keep bad guys out. But with technology coming to even more places, including our wrists, it begs the question, do we need to protect those things too?
Intel certainly thinks so. At Mobile World Congress this week, the company just announced that they’ll be bundling McAfee Mobile Security (Intel owns McAfee) with LG’s new Watch Urbane LTE. Yes, just as you thought your wrists could be free of bloatware/crapware, Intel has gone and stuck McAfee on a smartwatch. Why you would need that is unknown – as of yet, there are no known pieces of malware that specifically target a smartwatch. Plus, the software you can download and install on such a device, even on a non-tethered watch like the one question, is highly limited, making it difficult to inadvertently download malware.
The biggest question from all of this though, is how do you get rid of it? Let’s hope it’s not as difficult as it is on a new PC.

LG Android Wear watchers are cheaper than ever

$99 for first gen square, $199 for round G Watch R
Competition in the Android Wear segment is heating up, which is good news for consumers, as there are some nice deals to be had.

Prices of LG Android Wear smartwatches are lower than ever, so you can pick up the original G Watch W100 in white for less than €100 in major European markets. Granted, the W100 looks rather dated compared to more recent models from LG, Asus and Huawei, but if you just want to get an Android Wear device to check out the user experience, or experiment with some app development, it’s worth considering. LG’s G Watch R, which may be the best looking Android Wear device you can actually buy right now, costs twice as much, but that’s not bad. The round watch originally went for €300/$350, but now you can pick one up in Germany for €199 (with a 4% discount code).
This makes it 15-20% cheaper than the Moto 360, Sony Smartwatch 3 and the new Asus ZenWatch WI500Q, which is going for €229.
Of course, the Apple Watch is coming soon, but in terms of pricing it’s not in the same league. If Android Wear prices keep tumbling, we’re bound to see even cheaper devices, making them truly disposable – if you get a €150 watch and use it for 2-3 years, it really doesn’t matter if the battery goes flat, or if you break/lose it. The same can hardly be said of the Apple Watch, as consumers will have to pay €450 to €750 for Sport and Watch series models respectively.

Call-Capable LG Watch Urbane LTE Smartwatch Priced At $589 In South Korea

LG’s first effort in the Android Wear space, the G Watch, looked like a cheap prototype that should have never left the research lab. Its second offering, the G Watch R added a dash of style and a round display, but still didn’t look like a high-end wristwatch. LG announced the Watch Urbane in mid-February in an effort to up the luxury factor of its smartwatches. The Watch Urbane is available in silver and gold finishes, and comes with a leather band.
Not long after the announcement of the Watch Urbane, LG threw us all for a loop with the announcement of the Watch Urbane LTE, which doesn’t even run Android Wear like previous LG smartwatches. Instead, it uses a heavily revised version of webOS, which LG licenses from HP back in 2013. Another differentiator compared to Android Wear smartwatches is the inclusion of a SIM slot, which allows the Watch Urbane LTE to make and receive phone calls.

LG shocked us once again today with the announcement that the Watch Urbane LTE will be priced at $589 when it launches in South Korea. Even if we take into account that South Korean prices are typically a bit higher than in the United States (the G Watch R costs $318 in South Korea, but only $299 in the U.S.), it’s still a relative high price of entry. Samsung’s call-capable Gear S, which runs Tizen, is priced at $329 in the U.S.

We don’t know if LG has any plans to market the G Watch Urbane in the U.S., but with the smartwatch market heating up and the Gear S already gracing U.S. carrier networks, we wouldn’t be too surprised to see it make an appearance.

When it comes to smartwatches, there's a range to choose from but most run on the Android Wear platform. Announced at I/O 2014, Android Wear is Google's solution to put Android on wearables and since launch, we've seen many manufacturers introduce several smartwatch designs to cater for everyone.
The G Watch R is LG’s second Android Wear smartwatch after the original LG G Watch, launched as an alternative to the Motorola Moto 360. The latter was the first round Android Wear smartwatch and whilst LG’s offering has some great features, is it enough to be the best round Android Wear smartwatch?
Design

The G Watch R features a 1.3 inch Full Circle P-OLED display with 320 x 320 pixels resolution and is powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC. The use of a Qualcomm processor gives LG's watch better battery performance than the Moto 360, which is powered by a TI OMAP3 processor.
Around the outside of the P-OLED display, the G Watch R has a dial indicating minutes past the hour and on the right, there’s a dial that acts like a power button. Like many other smartwatches, the G Watch R has interchangeable watch straps allowing you to exchange LG’s default leather strap.

LG Watch Urbane LTE retail price is $365

A dollar a day
On the day when Apple is going to take most of the headlines with its low key iWatch launch, LG has bravely announced its own version of the wearable technology.

Dubbed the LG Watch Urbane it has been released via three mobile carriers today. It is not cheap and cheerful, the factory price is $365, however unlike most others on the market it does come with a Wi-Fi connection.
If a smartphone is connected to network and watch Urbane is within the WiFi zone, it will connect to WiFi no matter how far the distance. LG Electronics said that they have overcome the previous limit of 10m range connection.
Furthermore the watch has emoticon text reply, gesture recognition, and find my phone functions.
The new watch will also contain apps that are always on to keep the display from going dark. And it promises a new interface that allows easier access to your favorite or most-frequently used apps. You'll also be able to change the font size on the watch and view notifications even when you're using a different feature. And you can even draw emojis with your fingers.
LG Call will you let access recent calls and a list of favourite contacts on your smartphone to dial your call directly from the watch while leaving the phone in your pocket or purse. And LG Pulse will measure and report on your heart rate as you exercise.
OLED

The watch will borrow the same 1.3-inch P-OLED display used in the LG G Watch R but will tone down the bezel. That means the watch itself will be less bulky but the display size will remain the same. It has a stainless steel body with a stitched leather strap.
Of course it is technologically two years ahead of Apple's effort, but you will not hear that today. All the news will be about how Apple invented the idea of putting technology in a watch. Which was why LG was daft to launch today.

LG Watch Urbane W150 in the shops tomorrow

Sells for €329
Tomorrow is a big day for LG, as the company is planning to launch its highly anticipated LG G4 phone/phablet and its new flagship smartwatch.

The LG G4 is shaping up to be a nice phone and LG also plans to unveil and start selling its LG Watch Urbane W150, which is a revamped LG G Watch R with a higher price tag.
In Austria or Germany, you can already get the watch. Shops have them listed selling for €329 and if you order one today they will send it to you right away. We have mentioned this watch before, it is fashionable and looks better than anything on the market, beating the LG G Watch R and Moto 360 in terms of appearance. Watches are purely a matter of taste, so our comments are subjective, but we're sure many people will find the Urbane just as appealing.
The 1.3-inch P-OLED will definitely make the watch look nice, and since the LG G watch R can last about two days or normal use, we would expect the same from its fancy sibling. It is also canning Apple's battery life, but of course that has not stopped Apple selling two million of the things, including a million watches on the first day alone.
Some people like to search for something better and this is how Android Wear will be rediscovered despite the fact that it has been on market for some three quarters.
Smartwatches are something you can live without, trust us, we do have a few and have been playing with them for quite some time. About the only thing you can be guarateed is that it will tell time as long as it is charged. It can be an attention getter -- particularly if you shove it under someone's nose and say "look at my watch."

LG Watch Urbane teardown reveals surprisingly repairable hardware

A couple of weeks ago, iFixit got their hands on the Apple Watch for their usual teardown, finding it was very tightly packed and somewhat difficult to upgrade. iFixit is back this week with another teardown of a smartwatch, this time LG's Watch Urbane, and their findings suggest this watch could be a lot more repairable.

The Watch Urbane is a round smartwatch, and iFixit found that it was using the same 245 PPI 320 x 320 P-OLED display as its brother, the G Watch R, which isn't hugely surprising. However you'll want to keep this display in pretty good condition, as if the protective glass cracks, it will be a pain to replace due to the way the display, digitizer and glass are glued together.
The rest of the watch is fairly easy to access. All of the critical components are located on the one motherboard, which includes a Snapdragon 400 SoC with 512 MB of SK Hynix DDR2, 4 GB of memory, and a range of sensors. Opening the Watch Urbane to access the motherboard does break the water resistant sealing, though, which will need to be replaced upon reconstruction.

Underneath the motherboard is an easily-replaceable 410 mAh battery, the same size as the G Watch R's battery, and larger than both the Moto 360 (300 mAh) and Apple Watch (205 mAh). Combined with an OLED panel that can efficiently display a watch face, the Watch Urbane should have quite decent battery life.
iFixit also notes that the 22mm band attached to the Watch Urbane is easy to swap out, as it's a standard size that is secured to the watch via spring bars. Included with the Urbane is a nice leather band, though you could replace it with something else to suit your style.

LG partners with REEDS Jewelers for the LG Watch Urbane Luxe

LG Electronics has partnered with REEDS Jewelers to create an expensive luxury watch that isn't like most other smartwatches currently available.

The watch features a 1.3" full circle P-OLED display, runs Google Android Wear, and features a 410mAh battery. Owners can receive smart notifications, alerts, navigational prompts, fitness integration, and use the "OK Google" feature. The watch itself has a handmade alligator strap and features 23-karat gold.

If you have deep pockets, you can visit the REEDS' website and pre-order a unit for $1,195. The limited edition watch will have an initial run of just 500 units - with each model receiving its own serial number to authenticate it.
