    Apple TV

Apple TV 4 Release Date Time And Features Finalize

Apple TV was one of the iconic hobby making machine for all of us but has enjoyed ignorance since its commencement in 2007. The major upgrade has been reserved for the occasional yet most influential reasons. However, the time may be right to drag it away from the elementary level to the required upgrade due to heavy pressure from the introduction of Google’s Chromecast. With the third anniversary closing in this week there is now more content available on the set-top box than the traditional TV for Apple. Hence time may be at the verge for Apple to update the former milestone. Today, new reports have arrived which suggests a forth-generation Apple TV to be even thinner with a redesigned controller and a dedicated App Store for the little black box.

9to5Mac has reported that the upcoming forth gen Apple TV will be thinner than the current one and the remote is rumored to have tactile keys for better control. The same report suggests that the new remote control will have functionality enhancements considering the predecessor controller.
Apple TV To Include Gaming And A Dedicated App Store?

As the report continues to suggest the changing operating system of the Apple TV which will now feature a dedicated App Store. For quite a while now, there have been high speculation for Apple to introduce a gaming range to its TV series. This would give Apple TV the dominance required to keep the upper hand in terms of functionality and diversified utilities. The anticipation to include the applications in the App Store – resources seem quite thin to show, but to have a vague sketch you can always turn to your iOS and Mac App store to get a hunch for what might be included.

The expected release date has already passed pertaining to the delays in the content partners for which there seems to be a bit of push back. However, facts aside and reports alive, the updated Apple TV will showcase this week.
The so called ‘Connected TV’ is highly speculated to show some hardware advancements since its been much too long to have decent upgrades in the hardware department. The last update came merely on 2012 March, however it does seem that Apple is focusing more on internals and the operating system which both comes anew with minor hardware changes, though expectations are high. In the meantime, any update to the news will be covered right here. Do let us know how you feel about this evolution in the Apple TV series in the comments.

Apple cuts price of Apple TV to £59/$69

In an unexpected move, Apple on Monday reduced the price of its Apple TV set-top-box to £59/$69. It is expected that lower price will help Apple to sell more of its STBs and eventually boost sales of video content via iTunes.
For well over a year Apple is rumoured to introduce an improved version of its Apple TV set-top-box with higher performance and advanced capabilities. However, the company continues to sell its third-generation Apple TV STB, which was introduced in early 2012 and which is rather outdated by today’s standards. Apparently, instead of launching an improved version, Apple decided to cut-down the price of the current unit to £59/$69 from £99/$99 previously.
Apple’s third-generation set-top-box is based on the company’s dual-core A5 processor used in iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The STB allows users to watch iTunes content on big screen as well as stream video games from iPad to TV. Special apps enable access to content from companies like Netflix.

To date Apple has sold over 25 million Apple TV set-to-boxes, which is not a lot, considering the fact that the company has been selling STBs since early 2007.

Report: Apple will launch Web TV service before end of 2015

Apple is currently talking with content producers to launch a streaming TV service in the fall, according to a report published in the Wall Street Journal. If everything goes according to plan, consumers can expect the new streaming offering in September.

After the service launches, around 25 channels will be included, with ABC, CBS and Fox reportedly signing on - and the service can be used by all iOS devices, such as iPhones, Apple TV set-top boxes, and iPads. The new Internet streaming platform will cost about $30 per month.

"I think when Apple TV launches it will get lots of attention," said Jeff Kagan, industry analyst. "Some will love it and others will not. I think Apple TV will start small, [and] then grow quickly. Sort of on the same track as the original iPhone seven years ago. If we look out another five or ten years I Think Apple could have a powerful position in the television marketplace if for no other reason than they already have a gazillion customers always wanting the next, big thing."

Apple is still working on full-size TV-set – analyst

The chatter about Apple’s TV-set has been around for years, but the company still has not reveal any plans about such product. This does not mean that Apple has completely abandoned the project. Apparently, the company is still working on it, albeit, in a very stealth mode.
“Based on talking to people in industry, I think it’s pretty clear Apple is working on a TV, and I think time will set us free,” said Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray, in an interview with CNBC, reports Tech Trader Daily.
Back in 2011 Steve Jobs told his biographer Walter Isaacson that he was interested in making Apple TV and even knew how to re-invent a TV-set in general. Since then various financial analysts reported about Apple’s plans to buy large LCD or OLED panels for the device or internal testing of the product. But while the current chief exec Tim Cook implied that the company was working on a TV project, he has never explicitly confirmed anything.

It is noteworthy that even Steve Jobs himself called TVs a “terrible business” back in 2010. TVs are replaced very infrequently, usually once in a decade, unlike smartphones or tablets, which are replaced every couple of years. That said, in order to actually earn on TVs, Apple will need to re-invent not only the device itself, but to create a business model that would guarantee it a reliable revenue stream over the lifespan of the product. For example, game console business is tailored to generate revenue and profits by selling content, not hardware.
Recent market rumours suggest that Apple is about to introduce new version of Apple TV set-top-box with support of applications, Siri assistant and other improvements. It is highly likely that Apple is testing many features of Apple TV on its STB, trying to determine what users actually need and for what they are eager to pay.
Apple did not comment on the news-story.

Apple TV refresh expected this summer with faster A8 SoC and more storage to support new App Store

Apple TV received a discount, not an update, at the company’s recent smartwatch media event. The snub set the stage for a hardware refresh that’s now rumored to take place this summer according to sources familiar with Apple’s plans as reported by BuzzFeed.
The next generation Apple TV will reportedly make its debut during the annual World Wide Developers Conference in June. The set-top box will be loaded with an A8 processor (or perhaps a variant of it), much more onboard storage than usual, an update to the operating system and support for both Siri and HomeKit.
Hardware aside, the big news here is the software and UI improvements. The additional storage capacity will be needed to support the new App Store, a feature that has been rumored to be in the works for quite a while now.
Overall, sources say this revision of Apple TV – the first since early 2012 (unless you count the minor revision in January 2013) – will really capture the company’s vision of television for the modern era. When Apple TV first debuted in 2007, it was considered little more than a hobby.
That status has since been promoted to “an area of intense interest” under Tim Cook and given the new App Store and Homekit integration, this is starting to sound a lot like the Apple hub that one analyst described a few years back.
No word yet on pricing although it’s probably a safe bet to assume that new hardware will be priced above the $69 mark that the current model now sits at (the previous $99 price point seems about right).

Apple wants TV networks to handle streaming infrastructure for its upcoming OTT service

Apple is largely expected to deliver an over-the-top streaming television service this fall. Much like the streaming apps currently found on the company’s set-top box, Apple is reportedly asking television networks to build out and maintain the infrastructure necessary to deliver streaming content to customers.
Net2TV boss Tom Morgan notes that on average, it costs about five cents an hour per stream. Given Apple’s deep pockets, that obviously wouldn’t be a concern.
Industry executives recently told Re/code that Apple instead wants to focus on what it does best: building software and hardware that people will want to buy. Other tasks like managing content streams should be handled by people with experience in the matter.
Those same sources said Apple executive Eddy Cue is in charge of negotiating deals. That’s expected considering Cue heads up Apple’s media efforts.
Apple also seems to think that putting the responsibility of streaming in the hands of programmers would reduce the likelihood of Apple’s over-the-top service being “punished” by Internet service providers like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon.
If you recall, Netflix made a big stink last year over signing agreements with the aforementioned ISPs to ensure its service would have the bandwidth necessary to stream content in a lag-free manner. That may end up being a non-issue in light or the FCC’s recent ruling on net neutrality but I digress.

Revised Apple TV to add touch pad to remote

Apple TV is due for an update this summer and when it arrives, the set-top box won’t be the only thing getting a makeover. The Apple TV remote control, which has more or less stuck to the same design over the past eight years, will see the addition of a touch pad according to an anonymous employee briefed on the matter as reported by The New York Times.
As you’d expect, the touch pad can be used to scroll through the onscreen UI. The revised remote will be accompanied by two physical buttons and is slightly thicker compared to current models. The Times’ source said its thickness is comparable to the remote for Amazon’s Echo.
Most expect Apple to unveil its latest Apple TV next month during the company’s annual conference for developers. Apple TV refreshes typically involve an internal spec bump but with this revision, the company could also announce its streaming Internet TV service.
Much like Sling TV (and to an extent, PlayStation Vue), Apple’s streaming service will offer subscribers a small bundle of channels at a price that’s cheaper than a traditional cable package. In March, the rumor mill suggested the service will cost approximately $30 to $40 per month for a collection of 25 channels including most of the major networks (ABC, CBS and Fox) as well as other favorites like ESPN and FX.

Apple’s Internet TV service may not make it to WWDC

It looks like Apple has struggled to get its upcoming Internet TV streaming service ready in time for its annual World Wide Developer Conference next week, on the 8th of June. Announcements expected to take place at the show include a new music streaming service, based on Beats Music, alongside a new Apple TV set top box, iOS 9 and possibly even the iPad Pro.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that something of Apple’s might not be ready for WWDC. There were concerns that record labels would hold up the reveal of Apple’s music service a few weeks ago, although things seem to have come along since then.

The TV streaming service on the other hand, doesn’t seem to be going according to plan. According to a report from Re/Code, Apple did have plans to debut the service at WWDC but has had to postpone has negotiations have not yet ended with critical networks and content providers.
Early indications of this came last week, when CBS CEO, Les Moonves spoke at the Code Conference, stating that he would probably sign a deal with Apple but had not yet settled on financial terms. Apparently, Apple is also still working on the technology required to provide local programming via the web as well.
So far, Apple has said nothing official about its upcoming TV streaming service and it looks like the company may end up waiting longer. Pricing is also going to play a big factor, right now Sling TV is one of the more competitive services around so it is likely that Apple will try to match on price in order to compete.
Aside from that, if you were expecting Apple to release a full blown TV set at some point, then you will be disappointed as the company reportedly shelved its Smart TV plans some time last year.

Apple TV confirmed as central hub for HomeKit systems

Apple’s annual World Wide Developer Conference is just around the corner on June 8th, and Cupertino is already updating its site to prepare for the event. The Support site now contains new data on the way Apple TV will be integrated into HomeKit.
Apple TV will act as a main hub for a user’s smart home devices, and it appears as though it will be required to access HomeKit connected devices remotely. As long as you’ve got a third generation Apple TV running software version 7.0 or up and iOS 8.1, you will be able to control your smart gear away from home, according to the new support page.

While we already knew Siri voice commands were coming to HomeKit systems, it looks as though they will also be integrated with Apple TV. After signing in to the same Apple ID on your iOS devices and your Apple TV, you can fire off Siri voice commands to remotely control your smart accessories.
Expect device grouping as well, which allows you to send commands to multiple devices at once, for example an entire room, along with some commands that don’t even require your mobile device to be unlocked. There is also a new page that lists all of the currently compatible HomeKit devices from iHome and Elgato, to Insteon and Lutron devices.
WWDC 2015 is set for June 8th, so it won’t be long now until we see everything Apple has to offer at this year’s keynote.

    Apple TV is cannibalising Mac

Which shows the Mac's key use
In a story which was supposed to show Apple TV giving streaming-media box companies a kicking, CNET accidently revealed that the low powered, low function product is actually damaging Jobs' Mob's sales of Macs.

A report from Adobe said that Apple's share of TV Everywhere viewings doubled at the beginning of this year from the end of last, outstripping main rival Roku.
However the report said that much of the growth was caused by people swapping in their Apple TV for the online video they previously watched on desktops and laptops.
Tamara Gaffney, a principal analyst for Adobe Digital Index and the lead analyst on the latest report Mac access was dropping and they are abandoning their computers in favour of the Apple TV device."
Adobe examined consumer video viewing and browsing behaviour from the first quarter of last year through the first quarter of 2015. The data was aggregated from more than 500 billion visits, more than 200 billion online video starts and 2.8 billion TV Everywhere authentications for premium video content.
TV Everywhere is the traditional TV industry's gateway system for putting their shows online.
Adobe found that Apple TV represented 10 percent of TV Everywhere authentications in the first quarter, up from 5 percent in the final quarter of last year. That was better than Roku, which had an 8 percent share in the latest period, up one percentage point.
Gaming consoles, such as Xbox, made the biggest leaps in TV Everywhere share growth, to 24 precent from just six per cent a year earlier.
The most popular browsers for online video viewing are increasingly Google's Android and Chrome – which is growing more than Apple's Safari. Google is up 18 percent and Safari is up 15 percent, at the expense of Internet Explorer and Firefox.
The figures aren't the full picture of online video viewing. They don't include free video and content delivered by subscription services like Netflix.

Apple Interested in Streaming 4K Videos through Apple TV and iTunes

Apple is interested in streaming 4k content for digital distribution through iTunes and Apple TV, reveal the leaked Sony Pictures documents. These documents show data from almost two years back when a letter was signed between Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services and former Sony executive, Jim Underwood.

    4K content testing and distribution:

This letter between Apple and Sony is dated September 26, 2013 and is also supported by several other drafts from the same month. According to reports, this “materials access letter” from Culver Digital Distribution company associated with Sony Pictures was a “formal agreement” between the two companies for “testing and/or preparing” 4K film and television content for “non-exclusive distribution.”
The leaked letter is revealed by AppleInsider,
“Alongside the signed copy were multiple digital drafts dating back to early September 2013. It is unclear when the documents were first made public, though WikiLeaks on Thursday posted a new batch of material from the Sony hack to its website.”

The digital distribution of 4k video content through iTunes and on-demand streaming through Apple TV is not a surprising idea as 4k content is going to be a standard in the coming years. However, Apple hasn’t yet made any UHD movies or shows available through iTunes or Apple TV.
Apple TV set-top box still has to come with support for 4K output. Rumors earlier claimed that upcoming Apple TV is expected to come with support for Ultra HD movies and TV shows but industry analysts expect Apple to wait a little more for the market to be ready before it launches UHD supported Apple TV boxes.
Sony, on the other hand, is currently leading the industry of 4K content with producing supported projectors and its popular UHD TVs already in market.

Apple Should Focus on Content, Not TVs

If The Wall Street Journal is right, Apple was developing a full television set — an iTV, if you will — but the company gave up about a year ago. That's not shocking, since Apple couldn't bring much to the process of building a screen, but the company can still affect what appears on that screen.
Citing "people familiar with the matter," The Wall Street Journal reported last night (May 18), that after nearly a decade of development, Apple decided to abandon plans to build its own televisions. Apple tried to find killer features that would make its sets special, but its ideas didn't stand out, the article stated. "Ultimately, though, Apple executives didn't consider any of those features compelling enough to enter the highly competitive television market," read the article.
Apple Television Is Dead. Long Live the Apple TV?

The good news for people who longed for Apple to "reinvent" television is that the company still can. And it can do so by making a better version of its Apple TV set-top box and by providing a better online TV service for cord cutters. Another bright spot: The fact that Apple couldn't find a way to make a better TV is a sign that TVs are getting better and easier to use, even without Apple's help.
MORE: The Best TVs for Any Budget
"What's the difference between making Apple TV versus 'Apple Television?'" wrote Jeremy Toeman in an email to me last night. Toeman's been in the TV and online TV business for over a decade, working for or with companies including Sling Media (makers of the Slingbox), Boxee, Vudu Dropcam and Sonos. "Truly, how would/could an Apple Television be a fundamentally better product than an Apple TV hooked up to *any* other screen? I'd argue it wouldn't," Toeman added.
As screens, TVs are already pretty great. It's easy to buy a name-brand, high-end 55-inch HDTV for well under $1,000, such as the Samsung UN55H6203, one of Amazon's biggest sellers. It goes for $749, the same price as an entry-level unlocked iPhone 6 Plus, which has just a 5.5-inch screen. And budget 55-inch TVs can be had for less than $500. Even newfangled 4K/Ultra HD prices are coming down. Vizio's 50-inch model runs $799.
Today's screens also offer some pretty great features. There may not be much 4K content yet, but even with HD video, the higher-res screens allow people to sit twice as close before seeing the distracting grid of pixels. Think of 4K/ultra HD as the Retina Displays of the TV world. The latest advances, such as wide color-gamut and high-dynamic-range TVs will produce images not just as good as but better than you can get in a state-of-the-art movie theater (primarily due to the deeper black and shadows they can render). For the first time ever, viewers can see a movie exactly as it looked to people who were on set, even based on scans of vintage film stock, an executive of Dolby told me recently.
One of the proposed Apple innovations the journal article cited was, "sensor-equipped cameras so viewers could make video calls through the set." Camera-equipped TVs with Skype integration were introduced years ago, and recognition of hand gestures and even people's faces has also been implemented. Perhaps Apple could have added some value by integrating FaceTime or Siri into a TV, but the company clearly decided that these features wouldn't be enough to justify a whole product.
"The efficacy of an Apple-branded TV has always been in question," said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research at the Consumer Electronics Association, in an email. "Apple's looking in the right direction with their alleged plans to roll out a larger range of services (e.g., content and media bundles) with the new Apple TV box. "
    Could TVs Be Smarter?

While it was long a misnomer, the term "smart TV" is starting to be a valid descriptor for the latest TVs. Roku, which makes the second-most-popular set-top box (after Apple TV), is now putting its software on budget-priced smart TVs. Amazon's second-most-popular TV is a 40-inch Roku TV made by TCL and selling for $300. (A 55-inch version runs $600.) In addition to a straightforward interface, Roku has a universal search function that shows if a movie or TV program is on any of its dozen most-popular channels. Roku also has a Siri-style voice search interface (though it's still rough.).
And Roku is just one smart-TV system. LG, Samsung, Vizio and others provide slick interfaces, too. Were Apple to jump into the game, it might look like a me-too product. Comparing smart TVs to smartphones, it would be as if Android had come out before the iPhone.
MORE: Best Streaming Players: Chromecast, Roku, Apple TV & More
If Apple does have a better idea, it can still bring it out with a new Apple TV set-top box, which, according to longstanding rumors, is a virtual certainty this year (possibly even next month). Rumors also say that Apple will introduce an online streaming-TV service, and this is a place where things can get much better.
The only big player right now is Sling TV (which is only tangentially connected to Sling Media and the Slingbox). Sling TV (see review) is great primarily because it's the only thing out there. (Sony's better-looking, more-expensive PlayStation Vue is available in only three cities so far.) Sling TV was the first way for people to watch ESPN, AMC and several other cable networks online. But its interface looks much more like one from a cable TV box than one for cord-cutters. It has no DVR capability and limited (though growing) on-demand options — for some channels (ESPN being one of the exclusions). Getting from the cable/satellite-box-style interface to the on-demand options requires an unintuitive set of scrolling maneuvers that are not clearly indicated. Also, Sling TV can play on only one device (TV, smartphone, PC, etc.) at a time.
Some of these weak points, like no DVR, are likely the result of restrictive content-licensing deals with TV networks. Apple has been a pioneer in negotiating better deals for content, as it did first by setting up iTunes and then by offering MP3 versions of songs, free of copy protections, that can play in any device. Apple's also done a decent job getting content on the Apple TV. For a long time, Apple was the only one offering streaming HBO shows (albeit a year after they aired), and it was first to offer the new HBO Now full streaming service.
Still, there's much more to do to make online TV better, including improvements in pricing, availability and ways to find content. People have already bought about twice as many Apple TVs as Roku players (roughly 20 million versus 10 million), presumably for a reason. Apple TV hasn't had a major update since 2012. It's unlikely Apple hasn't been doing anything in the meantime to make the experience better. And we may soon see what that is.

Apple rumoured to launch TV service within a few months

Apple’s long talked about TV streaming service seems to be making its way towards a launch in a few months time during the Fall/Autumn period. Apple has been in discussions with broadcast networks for a while now but negotiations have taken some time. As you would imagine, Apple’s 30% cut of subscription revenue has not been popular with the networks but talks seem to be rapidly gaining momentum.
According to the New York Post, Disney or CBS will be amongst the first companies to sign on with Apple officially, Apple is also in talks with NBC, Fox and ABC. Apple reportedly wants to be able to offer customers channels like ESPN and Discovery.

Apple’s TV streaming service will feature ‘channel packages’ just like regular Cable TV does at the moment. Previous reports suggested that Apple also wanted to get local TV channels in as part of the deal as well but according to this new report, Apple has managed to speed up the process so that it doesn’t have to negotiate with every local affiliate network throughout the US.
Instead, Apple is having the major networks negotiate the rights deals with local broadcasters instead, this way Apple only has to deal with a handful of companies. These local networks can opt in to Apple’s service and will get a cut of the revenue.
Apple’s TV streaming service will likely début alongside a new Apple TV set top box, which we will probably see in October at Apple’s annual event for non-iPhone related hardware announcements.

Future Apple TV remote may have Touch ID

It looks like Apple is looking to expand its Touch ID fingerprint sensor in to other products as a recently filed patent from the company suggests that future Apple TV remotes will come with the technology built-in. This would add an extra layer of security when setting up TV service subscriptions or purchasing TV shows or movies on the iTunes store.
We are expecting a new version of the Apple TV to be released later this year. The patent in question details “device configuration for multiple users using remote user biometrics”, simply put, its Touch ID on a TV remote.

First spotted by Patently Apple, the patent describes controlling home automation, as well as buying content or accessing the device itself. This would suggest that Apple looks at a future where Touch ID is used for other things around the house, perhaps like controlling a smart thermostat or opening a garage door.
Touch ID on the Apple TV could also be used to verify a person’s age when purchasing certain films or shows. The patent was filed back in January so it is possible that Apple may already have this lined up for a future Apple TV this year. Though patents are no guarantee that something is going to come to fruition in a consumer product.

Apple TV 4 With New Design, App Store Launching This September

An Apple TV refresh is long overdue, with the Cupertino company’s current set-top box last receiving a hardware bump back in March 2012. Since then, the company has been rather mum when it comes to releasing new hardware of its famed TV box, but according to a freshly published report, a new and refreshed Apple TV 4 will see an announcement this September.

According to a piece published by BuzzFeed, Apple is all set to announce the new Apple TV 4 in September, during the same event it plans to announce the iPhone 6s. This move will ensure that the new hardware is available to people just in time for the famed holiday shopping season.
It’s also being reported that the Apple TV 4 won’t support 4K content, which is rather strange, considering that the Cupertino giant has gone way past the 1080p mark in most of its mobile device lineup, and stands firmly in the Retina region of things, and the same goes for most of its Mac lineup as well.
On the design front, the Apple TV 4 is expected to be thinner than the current generation hardware. And when it comes to the internals of the device, it is being reported that it would be powered by Apple’s A8 chip, the same one found in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, along with the iPad Air 2 and new iPod touch 6.

Software wise, the source says that the new Apple TV will come with an App Store of its own, allowing third-party developers to design and make apps for Cupertino’s set-top box. The company is said to release the SDK for developing Apple TV apps alongside the new hardware. Apart from that, the new Apple TV 4 is also rumored to get a brand new interface.
The Apple TV 4 will come bundled with a new and improved remote control, doing completely away with the traditional aluminum one which we have come to know for years. The new remote is said to feature touch-based controls and Siri integration as well.
Lastly, it was rumored a while back that the new Apple TV 4 will make its debut alongside a new TV subscription service which Apple is currently working on, and if today’s report is to be believed, the service is still isn’t ready for debut, and the Apple TV 4 will ship without it.
Originally meant to be released at this year’s WWDC, it’s being reported that Apple scrapped its plans to announce the device due to it not being ready for prime time. With September right on our noses, we’ll know soon what Apple has up its sleeve.
