Apple recalls small batch of 3rd-gen Apple TVs over defective part

In what appears to be a targeted recall program, Apple this week notified an unknown number of customers that their recently purchased third-generation Apple TV unit would be replaced due to a faulty part.

Apple reached out to a MacRumors staff member who bought an Apple TV “a few weeks ago” to inform him of the situation, explaining that only customers affected by the unspecified problem are being contacted. The company did not further detail the issue, but the fact that customer service is emailing buyers individually suggests it is limited to a small number of units.
Apple is overnighting replacement Apple TVs to users confirmed to have a defective unit, even if the hardware is not yet experiencing problems. Because the faulty part was not identified, it is not clear what owners need to look out for, though it seems Apple is already taking proactive steps to ensure seamless operation.
Apple last initiated a recall program for Beats Pill XL speakers in June after it was discovered that the internal battery posed a fire risk. Those who purchased the defective product were offered $325 in Apple Store credit or cash.

Apple's TV service on hold

As expected
Apple's over-hyped television service has been put on ice, pretty much like we expected.


Bloomberg reported that Apple will delay its live TV service to at least next year, despite lots of rumours that it was going to see the light of day on September 9.
However it appears that CBS and Twenty-First Century Fox to license programming are grinding on and lack of content has led Apple to scrap plans to announce the service.
But Bloomberg said that Apple was also having a few technical problems with its networks. This is hardly surprising as networking is not one of Apple's strong suits. But despite all the cash it has spent on data centres, the outfit apparently lacked the computer network capacity to ensure a good viewing experience, Bloomberg said.
Apple will release its set-top box at the event. The Apple TV is now rather elderly and has needed an upgrade for years.
To be fair Apple is not the only tech giant which has been unable to manage the TV stations. Intel and Microsoft have also failed to set up online TV services. Apple was at least lucky that it managed to get its foot in the door with iTunes. Now it seems that Big Content is a lot older and wiser and not handling the keys to its kingdom easily.

Apple's streaming TV service delayed as negotiations with programmers sputter

Apple seemingly had every intention of launching its rumored streaming television service this fall but as is becoming the norm with Apple and television-related rumors, it has been delayed until at least 2016.
Sources familiar with the matter tell Bloomberg that talks to license programming from major television networks is progressing rather slowly. Specifically, Apple wants to charge around $40 per month for a bundle of channels which is roughly half the price of the average cable bill in the US.
Television programming executives aren’t buying into Apple’s pitch. It’s their belief that they should earn more money from Internet-based services since they are new to the market and they want to gain market share. Apple famously managed to get music industry executives to charge 99 cents per track, a decision that was key to its industry dominance during the previous decade.

Another issue is that Apple doesn’t have the infrastructure in place to ensure a quality viewing experience, a rumor that coincides with earlier reports suggesting Apple wanted TV networks to handle the backend.
The two setbacks have reportedly forced the Cupertino-based company to scrap plans to announce the service at a September 9 media event in San Francisco. The timing of the event would have coincided with the beginning of the fall network TV season. Apple is still planning to refresh its Apple TV hardware at the event, however, in addition to a pair of new iPhones and the next wave of iPads.
If and when Apple is able to hammer out a comprehensive deal with TV programmers, it’ll serve as yet another revenue stream for the company.

There’s still substantial demand for the iPhone and while its Mac business is holding steady, sales of the iPad continue to slide. The iPod is barely a blip on the company’s radar at this point and it’s too early to know for sure whether or not the Apple Watch will be a hit (my vote is no).
Apple is smart enough to know that it can’t ride the iPhone cash train forever. Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets, believes a streaming TV service could generate as much as $3 billion in revenue by 2018. That’s not a lot compared to the $233 billion in sales the company is estimated to take in this year but it could be an important cog in further building a massive media empire.
Apple’s interest in revolutionizing the television industry dates back many years. Before his death in late 2011, Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson that he wanted to create a simplified television set with an interface that would take the complexity out of operating modern entertainment equipment.

Most believe that Apple has since given up on the low-margin idea of creating a physical television set, instead focusing on delivering traditional content over the Internet. That’s far from an original idea these days as there are now multiple providers offering such services for cord cutters.
An attractive price point could certainly help the company gain market share and having a massive following certainly won’t hurt matters either. But without a really groundbreaking feature or two, dominating the industry as Apple has done time and time again won’t be easy. A la carte still seems like the best bet as a consumer but that looks less likely as each day passes.

Apple likely won’t be launching its TV service until next year

We have been hearing about Apple’s upcoming Internet TV service for some time now. While some networks, like CBS, have come out and said that they will probably sign on with Apple, other copyright holders have been holding the process back, resulting in delay after delay for Apple’s new service.
While previous reports suggested that Apple’s new TV service would be announced in September or October, now we are hearing that the service won’t début until next year. According to Bloomberg, Apple is still working things out with CBS, Fox and NBC.

Initially, we were expecting to see the service announced alongside a brand new Apple TV in September. However, it seems that things have taken a turn, some networks want more money out of Apple, and some sources say that the company has not yet invested enough in to increasing its network capacity to ensure a decent viewing experience.
If Apple does not yet have the server power to manage that amount of traffic, then it is probably a good thing that the service is being pushed back to next year. After all, services like Netflix and Sling TV have millions of users and people aren’t going to want to cut the cord if their streams are constantly buffering or suffering from low quality bitrates.

All-New Apple TV Running iOS 9 Will Receive Dedicated App Store, Siri And Touch Remote

Who knows when or even if Apple will ever launch its long-planned streaming TV service (the latest buzz is that those plans have been pushed to 2016 due to stalls in negotiations with media companies). In the meantime, the company stays relevant in the streaming space with its Apple TV set-top box, and word on the web is that the next version will sport several upgrades.

New hardware is a given. The chassis is likely to look similar to previous versions, though reportedly it will be thinner and a tad wider. Of more interest is the new dedicated remote control that will ship with Apple TV boxes. This larger remote will feature more tactile keys along with touch-based input and support for gestures. Cross your fingers that Force Touch makes it way to the remote as well.

Interestingly, sources tell 9to5Mac that the next Apple TV box will be the first to use a full-blown iOS core. It will consist of a version of iOS 9 that's been optimized for TV viewing with Proactive search, the latter of which is one of the main reasons why Apple TV's software will be based on iOS 9.

Proactive search will allow users to search across the entire system, a feature that's not possible with the current generation Apple TV. If you perform a search for Will Ferrell, the next generation Apple TV model will look for entries in iTunes, Netflix, and everywhere else it has access to.

Of course, Siri will likely make an appearance, too. Having Siri on board will take the frustration out of having to type characters using the remote control.

The streaming space is pretty crowded and one way Apple will look to further differentiate itself from the competition is through a dedicated app store. Apple will offer a full software development kit (SDK) to encourage developers to build apps specific to Apple TV, just as they can do with Apple's other products. And while Apple is reportedly focusing on video content, it will be interesting to see what developers come up with.

Apple has already made it official that it’s going to hold a media event on the 9th of September. But, as usual, the company is tight lipped regarding its future plans. Thankfully though, the leaks are coming in hot, and we already have a slight hint at who would be the primary stars of the show – the iPhone 6s and the Apple TV 4. Having that said, a new report has emerged, claiming that the new Apple TV will feature a brand new Wii style motion sensing remote.

Apple TV 4 To Feature A Motion Sensing Remote

According to a report published by TechCrunch, who claim to have inside scoop on the matter, the Apple TV 4 will feature a remote that will also sense motion. The reason for this is quite obvious, given the previous report on the upcoming Apple TV that it would have a dedicated App Store, and we’re of course talking about the possibility of gaming.
Bringing gaming to the Apple TV sounds logical too, as it will open the platform to a whole new variety of possibilities, and of course, give developers something new to push their teeth into.
The report also states that the Apple TV will be powered by an Apple A8 chip, the one found in the current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. This would further boost the performance of the set-top box, and open the doors to powerful and more meaningful apps.
Coming back to the remote of the Apple TV 4 itself, the accessory will feature a touchpad as well as a few physical buttons for interacting with the on-screen content. The remote will also feature a microphone for Siri commands, something which has long since been rumored to make the cut to the Apple TV.





The new Apple TV is set to receive a major design refresh and is rumored to be far more sleeker than the current model. It would be interesting to see how Apple will rule the living room space once again with its new model, and whether or not it can deliver all the goodness under the $99 price tag.

Apple Hopes To Charge $40 For TV Subscription Service

That sounds like a fair price for 25 to 30 channels, right? The problem is that cable providers want to charge more. Reportedly, Apple’s ideal price was $30, but media companies keep pushing the price up. Let’s hope that Apple’s clout keeps the monthly fee attractive and sane.


While we’re not exactly sure which content providers in particular are demanding a bigger cut, some of the cable channels already on board reportedly include ESPN and FX. Though it’s possible that the dynamics have changed, a report from this past March relayed that Apple was running into trouble trying to secure content deals with NBCUniversal, a Comcast subsidiary that owns quite a few popular cable channels, including USA, E!, and Bravo.

As we move towards the 9th of September, the leaks are picking up pace faster than we could’ve imagined. And with many rumors flying around that Apple would be introducing a fourth-generation Apple TV at its big keynote, today we’re seeing a new report that details the upcoming set top box’s pricing and availability details.

The Apple TV 4 Will Be More Expensive Compared To Third-Generation Model

According to a new report published by 9to5Mac, Apple will price the Apple TV 4 at around $149 or $199. The interesting thing here to note is that the Cupertino giant will continue to sell the third-gen Apple TV for a price of just $69. Regarding availability, the report says that the new Apple TV 4 will go on sale in October, so don’t expect to grab the new set-top box immediately after its announcement.
Apart from the above mentioned details, the report also reveals that Apple’s new Web TV streaming service will be available next year, and will arrive on both the Apple TV 4 and 3 as a software update. It’s expected that the service will cost $40 a month for 25 or so channels for a month.
It’s also worth mentioning here that while the Apple TV 4 is expected to come with its very own App Store and of course, Siri support, users should not hold their breath for the same features on the Apple TV 3.





The Apple TV 4 is expected to be powered by the A8 chip, the very same one that lives inside the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Apart from that, the device is rumored to come with a brand new touch-enabled remote that can also sense motion and will have a built-in mic for conversing with Siri. On the software end, Apple is rumored to revamp the whole UI and will bring the App Store to our TV sets, like we mentioned above.

Apple Wants To Compete With Netflix And Hulu With Its Own In-House Content

According to a freshly published report, Apple is exploring the possibility of producing original TV shows and movies in a bid to compete with well established names within the entertainment industry.

The news comes in from Variety, and they are reporting that Apple is in talks with Hollywood executives with the aim of producing original TV content. But at this point, the talks are in the early stages, and it’s believed that Apple is pulling off such a movie in order to compete with the likes of Netflix and Hulu, which are strongly cemented names in a lot of living rooms across the globe.
Going through the source’s report, it’s very, very unclear if Apple is serious about its plans or whether it’s just ‘flirting’ with the idea. And like we mentioned before, the talks are in their early stages and Cupertino’s future plans are rather unknown in this timeframe.
According to Variety:

“Sources indicate the Cupertino, Calif. colossus has held preliminary conversations in recent weeks with executives in Hollywood to suss out their interest in spearheading efforts to produce entertainment content. The unit putting out the feelers reports into Eddy Cue, who is Apple’s point man on all content-related matters, from its negotiations with programmers for Apple TV to its recent faceoff with Taylor Swift.”

If Apple does go ahead with its plans, it wouldn’t be the first time the Cupertino company would be doing such a thing. For instance, Apple has been working in close proximity with artists like Eminem and Drake to produce in-house music videos and are available to view directly on Apple Music, the Cupertino’s new found music streaming venture. Therefore it’s quite possible that Apple would pull off such a thing again when it comes to TV shows, movies, or maybe both.





It’s also likely that Apple’s content would be available exclusively to Cupertino’s very own fan base. The reason behind that is quite simple – to bait in as many new users as possible towards its blooming ecosystem. A very smart move if Apple is indeed planning in doing such a thing.
It’s also rumored that Apple would be launching its Web TV streaming service early next year, which will be available for both the current Apple TV and the upcoming Apple TV 4. It’s quite possible Apple is in talks with Hollywood executives for this very Web TV venture.
And of course, that’s all just speculation.

While we don’t know exactly what the new Apple TV 4 will look like, one designer went a little step further in conceptualizing the fabled device’s UI, which is bound for a warm announcement next week.

If different reports circulating the Web are anything to go by, then the Apple TV 4 is going to be a massive upgrade over the third-gen set-top box which Cupertino sells in the market for $69. The device is set to get a brand new UI, and among other things, access to the App Store for third-party apps and games, and of course, Siri. And keeping that very same thing in mind, concept designer Andrew Ambrosino tossed in all of his talent in designing what could be the UI of the upcoming Apple TV 4.

As you can see from the concept above, the designer has covered all the bases in one fell swoop. In fact, the creator of this concept images the Apple TV 4 to be running Cupertino’s latest and greatest mobile OS, iOS 9, but tailored for a much larger screen.
As you wake the device up, the artist imagines the iOS 9 lock screen greeting you back, which requires a ‘touch’ to be unlocked, hinting towards the fact that the Apple TV 4 would come with a touch-enabled remote, something which we’ve been hearing a lot about in the news.
Moving on, there’s Siri as well to take up our voice commands, and asking the personal assistant to play a movie or TV show is as easy as speaking directly into the Apple TV’s remote.

Then there’s support for third-party apps, which is clearly advertised in the concept itself.

A few days, a report surfaced suggesting that the Apple TV 4 will be priced between the $149 to $199 bracket, and will be available in October. But according to a newly surfaced piece from BuzzFeed, the Cupertino giant’s new set-top device will ‘start’ from $149, which could mean that Apple might throw in several models into the mix, more specifically those with larger memory capacities.
Moving on, the report also reveals that the Apple TV 4 will feature universal search which will be powered by Siri. The new search feature will allow users to search for content from all sources using a single voice command, and queries will not just be limited to iTunes itself, as the device can tap into other sources, such as Netflix, Amazon and more, for results.
With every passing day, more and more Apple TV 4 details are starting to emerge. For instance, it was just under a week back we came across a report that suggested Cupertino’s new ‘hobby’ product will ship with a motion sensing remote. Apart from that, another report suggested that the device will feature an A8 processor, the very same one found in the iPhone 6, and will come with a brand new UI, Siri and an App Store for installing third-party apps and games.
Several different reports also suggest that the Apple TV 4 will also support third-party Bluetooth controllers, making it an ideal platform for gaming, while also giving developers ample opportunity to expand their horizons.





All of this, and more, will be announced at Apple’s September 9th event, which is set to kick off at 10am PDT. We’re expecting Apple to announce new iPhones at the event, as well as final release dates for iOS 9, OS X El Capitan, and of course, watchOS 2 for the Apple Watch.
With the event just a week away, and the leaks coming in thick and fast, it would be interesting to see what new the blogosphere will bring to the roster just hours before the event officially kicks off. We’re sure there are a lot of surprises which we don’t know about at this point, and Apple is being absolutely tight lipped about them.

A new report spills all the beans on the Apple TV 4’s hardware, and suggests that we will be seeing a substantial upgrade next week during Cupertino’s big ‘Hey Siri, Give us a hint’ keynote.

The Apple TV 4 Will Be A Mighty Upgrade, But Not Ready For 4K Just Yet

It was just a few minutes back we were treated to a report suggesting that the Apple TV 4 will start at a price point of $149 while also featuring universal search. But now, 9to5Mac has chimed in with a large scoop and brings to us all the hardware details of the new Apple TV 4.
According to the publication, the Apple TV 4 will come in two storage options – 8 and 16GB. Apart from that, the new set-top box will be powered by an A8 chip, and despite the processor’s more than adequate capabilities, the new Apple TV won’t support 4K content. Furthermore, the report also touches upon the remote of the Apple TV 4, and reveals that it will be a color matching offering and will be darker in shade, but will still be made of metal. 9to5Mac also touches upon the fact that the remote will feature two tactile buttons, located underneath the ‘touchpad,’ one for Siri and other for going back to the home screen. The remote will also feature ‘rocker buttons’ to control the volume as well.





Lastly, the report says that the Apple TV 4 hardware will be larger than the current set-top box which the Cupertino ships to the market. Apart from that the new Apple TV 4 will ship with the same ports that are found in the Apple TV 3, so don’t expect any new surprises in that regard.
It’s surprising to see how much has been leaked just days before Apple’s big keynote next week. And judging by the pace of leaks we are witnessing, we wouldn’t be surprised at all if we are treated to an image leak of the new Apple TV 4 in all its glory. After all, there’s no hiding from the prying eyes these days.
As we mentioned before, Apple is set to hold its event on the 9th of September, and we expect the company to take the wraps off the iPhone 6s, the new Apple TV 4 as well as give us final release dates for its next-gen mobile and desktop software – iOS 9, OS X El Capitan and watchOS 2.

Apple is all set to announce a brand new Apple TV 4 at its big event next week, on the 9th of September. Based on all the reports and rumors that are circulating on the Web, here’s everything we know so far about the yet to be announced device.
Design

According to a recently published report, the Apple TV 4 will be larger than the current Apple TV 3 which the Cupertino company ships for $69. It’s highly likely that the new set-top box will feature the same app icon like design which we have come to know over the years, but of course, Apple is bound to throw in a few tweaks to make the device look a lot flashier and prominent than before.
Brand New Remote

The new Apple TV 4 will come with a brand new remote which will feature a touchpad for interacting with the on-screen UI, while also featuring a microphone for Siri commands. Apart from that, reports suggest that the Apple TV 4 remote will feature two tactile buttons for ‘Home’ and ‘Siri’ and a volume rocker as well.
Motion Sensing Remote

Apart from a new remote design, it’s also rumored that the Apple TV 4’s remote control accessory will also sense motion, which would highly likely serve its purpose more in gaming that anything else.
Color Matched Remote

Unlike before, the Apple TV 4 will have a color matching remote with the main hardware itself, and of course, it will be made of metal.
New User Interface

Unlike the current Apple TV UI, the Apple TV 4 will feature a brand new on-screen look, with a much more enhanced underlying software which will be based on iOS 9. While we don’t know the specifics of the UI, one concept designer has done a good job in visualizing what Apple might have in store for us.

The device will be much more powerful than before and streaming content should be a breeze, and of course, stutter free. We’re pretty certain that the Apple TV 4 will feature more RAM to keep things ticking over nicely.
WiFi 802.11ac

Apple is all set to throw in WiFi 802.11ac standard support in the Apple TV 4, something which is a marquee feature in its other lineup of devices such as the iPhone, iPad and of course, the Mac.
App Store

This one’s a biggie and something which has been rumored for quite a while, the Apple TV 4 will feature an App Store of its own, and will have full support for third-party apps and games.


Siri With Universal Search

As we mentioned above, the new Apple TV will support Siri, and will also come packed with a universal search feature, allowing the voice assistant to tap into multiple sources such as Netflix, Hulu and iTunes to get multiple results in one fell swoop.
Third-Party Bluetooth Controller Support

Given the rumored support for third-party apps and games, the new Apple TV 4 will allegedly have support for external Bluetooth game controllers, according to a report published by 9to5Mac.
No 4K Support Just Yet

With 4K being the new standard for video based content, reports are suggesting the new Apple TV 4 won’t have support for the 4K standard just yet.
