Report: Devs let down by poor sales on the Apple TV App Store

Word is starting to spread that some developers responsible for top-charting games and apps on the iOS App Store are seeing less than stellar revenue from what seem to be "successful" apps on the new Apple TV App Store.
That's according to TouchArcade editor-in-chief Eli Hodapp, who published an editorial yesterday about the state and potential future of developers launching apps for the revamped Apple TV that launched late in October with its own App Store.
"I've been talking to many different developers who have released games or apps on the device, and the general vibe is that if things don't turn around following Christmas, Apple is going to have a real problem on their hands," writes Hodapp. "'Successful' apps are making $100 a day on a good day, with revenue continuing to trail off since launch."
Though Hodapp's perspective is based on anecdotal reports, mobile game makers may appreciate hearing how some of their compatriots are faring in this new marketplace.
When Apple debuted the game-ready Apple TV in September many game developers seemed cautiously optimistic about making (or porting) games for the device, though Apple later constrained their efforts by (among other things) forbidding developers from making Apple TV games that require a controller to play.

Apple’s TV service was suspended due to clashing networks

This week, reports began circulating, claiming that Apple has officially suspended its Internet TV service, though we didn’t have many details at the time. Now, some more information has come to light as just as you would expect, Apple was unable to get networks to agree on pricing, or channel bundles.
The big thing Apple was pushing for this year was a ‘skinny bundle’, which would be a base package of around 12 or so network channels for no more than $30 a month. This seems to have been a particularly tough sell, particularly when it came down to how much each individual channel was worth and what would get cut or added to each package.

This is all coming from a new report from Re/Code, which tends to be pretty accurate when it comes to these things. The report shows that another big issue for Apple was that while networks would claim that they understand that consumers don’t want to pay for channels they don’t watch, each network would insist that their channels were all ‘must haves’.
Re/Code gave Fox as an example, noting that the network was reluctant to sell Fox and Fox News without the FX or Sports channels bundled in. This same trend carried over across multiple networks, which defeated the purpose. The whole point of Apple’s service was to provide cable cutters with a way of getting the channels they want on a more individual basis, without also having to pay for additional channels they don’t necessarily want.

VLC is now available for the Apple TV

One of the most popular cross-platform video players, VLC, is now available on Apple TV, giving users the ability to watch their collection of videos without the need to convert or transcode them.
VLC has been in the works for Apple TV since September, and entered internal testing in November. According to the VideoLan team, VLC for Apple TV is now ready for public use, and it supports the same huge range of formats that you'd expect from the popular video player app.
The VLC app for Apple TV supports playback from a variety of network sources, including SMB, UPnP, Plex and FTP. The app also includes a way to send files to the Apple TV for local playback through a feature called 'casting', which works by dragging and dropping videos through a web interface.
You'll need to own a fourth-generation Apple TV from 2015 if you want to run VLC, and it should be available in the tvOS App Store shortly. Future updates will include the ability to play content from cloud services such as Dropbox and OneDrive.

Apple might be interested in buying Time Warner

A while back, it was revealed that Apple has put plans for its TV streaming service on hold after failing to get all networks to agree on packages, pricing and their respective revenue cuts. However, now it looks like Apple might be interested in kickstarting things by buying assets of Time Warner.
Apparently on Monday, Time Warner CEO, Jeffrey Bewkes, told investors that he would consider a sale of the company with Apple being listed as a potential buyer.

That particular tidbit comes from sources speaking with New York Post (Via: Macrumors), on top of that Fox and even AT&T were also reported to have shown interest in Time Warner. Time Warner happens to own a lot of assets that could help with Apple’s TV service, including HBO, TNT, TBS, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, CNN and NBA TV.
Owning Time Warner could be exactly what Apple needs to offer its often talked about ‘Skinny bundle’, which would be a base package of several channels featuring popular TV shows to get people subscribing. Apple could then offer packages from companies like Fox, Disney and ABC at higher subscription tiers.

ESPN is in talks with Apple about streaming service

While we did recently hear that Apple has put its TV streaming ambitions on hold, it looks like the company may still be in talks with some networks. We recently learned that Apple was named as a potential suitor for the sale of Time Warner and this week, it has come out that ESPN is in ‘on going’ talks with the company about its streaming service.
John Skipper, the president of ESPN, recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal, confirming that he believes Apple is in a great position to start up a TV service with a great OS platform for it: “They are creating a significantly advantageous operating system and a great television experience and that television experience is fabulous for sports.”

Skipper then went on to say that while Apple has ran into hurdles with other networks in regards to putting together bundles, ESPN continues to work with Apple: “We are big proponents of believing it would be a fabulous place to sell some subscriptions. We have ongoing conversations. They have been frustrated by their ability to construct something which works for them with programmers. We continue to try to work with them.”
Apple has been trying to prepare its Internet TV streaming service for cord cutters for well over a year now but unfortunately, many networks failed to agree on pricing and bundles. The thing causing the most disrupt was Apple’s ‘Skinny’ bundle, which was supposed to include some of the popular channels from multiple networks and be priced at around $30 a month.

Apple Releases tvOS 9.1.1 Update for Apple TV With Podcasts App

Apple yesterday released the third update to tvOS, the operating system designed to run on the fourth-generation Apple TV. tvOS 9.1.1 is a minor update that likely includes bug fixes and performance updates to address issues discovered since the launch of tvOS 9.1, which was released to the public in December of 2015.
The new 9.1.1 update can be downloaded over the air through the Settings app on the Apple TV by going to System –> Software Update. Those who have automatic software updates turned on will be upgraded to the new 9.1.1 operating system automatically.

Also keep in mind that changing the DNS address will not instantly upgrade your Internet connection to download things faster. A better DNS server will only translate pages much more quicker compared to the older one, nothing more, nothing less.
If you constantly stream things like YouTube, Netflix, Hulu and more on your Apple TV 4, then it’s recommended to give a third-party DNS server a shot as they can help a lot in fixing streaming speeds, cutting down the buffering effect altogether in a lot of cases.

Apple seeded the third beta of tvOS 9.2 yesterday to developers and it seems as though the new piece of software for Apple TV 4 is more loaded than we originally thought it would be.

Lifting the hood of tvOS 9.2 beta 3 reveals a bunch of startling revelations and things that we wished were there in the first ever release of tvOS. For instance, this update brings with it support for voice dictation, just like on iOS and OS X, allowing you to fill out text boxes without having to swipe left and right on the less than stellar tvOS on-screen keyboard.
The way the new feature works in tvOS 9.2 beta 3 is absolutely simple as well. Once you’re in a text box that supports voice dictation, you’ll be prompted to hold down the ‘mic’ button on the Siri remote to input text using voice. Once you’re done, simply let go of the ‘mic’ button and everything will be translated to plain text.

You can even use the newfound dictation feature in tvOS 9.2 beta 3 to dictate usernames and passwords for different accounts as well, which means you can kiss the on-screen keyboard goodbye.

Last but not the least, Siri has learned a new trick in tvOS, allowing users to search the App Store using the power of their voice. A handy addition if you’re asking us, especially if you consider yourself to be an app addict on Apple TV 4.
It’s rather strange that Apple took a while to bring such a feature to its tvOS platform, given that the feature has been on iOS and OS X for a long, long time. And considering the fact that tvOS makes good use text input method, it leaves us with our heads scratching for obvious reasons.
We’re quite certain that we’ll see at least one more beta before tvOS 9.2 is rolled out to everyone around the globe. And given the fact that Apple is throwing in new features with every release of pre-release software for Apple TV 4, there’s a high chance that the final build will bring with it surprises we haven’t even seen or heard of before.
You can give tvOS 9.3 beta a shot on your Apple TV 4 only if you’re a registered developer with Apple. If you’re not, then you might want to wait this one out as the Cupertino giant isn’t currently running any beta program for public testers.
Eventually the company might. But that day isn’t today!

CBS not talking with Apple about streaming TV services anymore

CBS was in some heated negotiations with Apple to bring forth their lofty network services through the network, and potentially allowing you to stream that content to Apple devices. But that's no longer, or so says the CEO of CBS.

According to the CEO, Les Moonves, they really haven't heard from Apple regarding that aforementioned TV streaming service. The initial meetings occurred, and they appeared to be positive from what we can gather. It's just that Apple never called them back afterwards.

"We had conversations awhile back, and we haven't had recent conversations with them," Moonves told CNNMoney in an interview. Internet streaming services have accounted for nearly 40% of their revenue this past year, meaning that they understand the importance of digital media. They've made a number of partnerships with outside companies for streaming content, so a partnership with Apple isn't out of the question. Apple just needs to answer the phone.
