iOS 9.3.1 Update With Fix For Safari Link Crashes Coming Soon, Confirms Apple

Apple has confirmed that it will be releasing a software update (iOS 9.3.1 presumably) to fix the dreaded Safari link crash issue on iOS 9.3.

Apple Is Aware Of The Safari Link Crash Issue, Promises iOS 9.3.1 Fix For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Devices

It was revealed a few days back that users were experiencing crashes on their iPhones, iPads, iPod touches whenever they tapped on a Safari link. Several fixes arose from a number of places which aimed to help users overcome this problem, but the issue still persisted for many. Now, Apple has acknowledged that the issue is indeed the real deal and has promised that it will release a software update in the future to fix everything once and for all.
“We are aware of this issue, and we will release a fix in a software update soon.”
It’s highly likely that this software update will be iOS 9.3.1, and it’s also quite likely that it will be released soon rather than later, hopefully within a couple of weeks. After all, this is a widespread issue for a lot of users around the globe, and it would be wise for Apple to act swiftly on the matter.
    Advertisements

Coming back to the fixes, there are plenty of them out there, with most of them working either temporarily for some users, or not at all. Still, you can check them all out in the article linked below.
Fix iOS 9.3 Crash Issue When Opening Safari Links

This isn’t the first time Apple pushed out a slightly botched update out to the masses. The first instance of it happened when the Cupertino giant released iOS 8.0.1, which rendered countless iPhone 6 handsets absolutely useless by killing cellular capabilities and Touch ID. But thankfully, the company was swift enough to release a new software update to fix everything. And furthermore, it was just yesterday Apple released an updated version of iOS 9.3 which fixed the dreaded Activation Lock issue on older iOS devices. Keeping that in mind, we’re certain that iOS 9.3.1 will come through soon for everyone.
Till that happens, we urge users not to do anything which is too daring for your device. And if you can’t contain yourself still, then we recommend that you at least make a backup of everything on iTunes and iCloud, then proceed with your evil experiment to get things right again.
We will inform our readers whenever iOS 9.3.1 is released, so stay tuned to our coverage!

iOS 9.3 Night Shift ‘Sunset To Sunrise’ Schedule Option Missing? Here’s How To Get It Back

If the ‘Sunset to Sunrise ‘ schedule option for Night Shift is missing in iOS 9.3 on your device, then here’s what you need to do to bring it back.

iOS 9.3 Night Shift is a great way to reduce the strain on your eyes, and help you sleep better at night, at least that’s what Apple claims. And as you dive into the Night Shift feature itself, you’ll come to realize that Apple has thrown in a bunch of options into the mix, allowing you to either kickoff Night Shift at a specific time, or schedule it from sunset till sunrise. But oddly enough, some people are noticing that the ‘Sunset to Sunrise’ feature is missing from the scene, with some complaining that the option was once there and has now made an exit for no apparent reason. Don’t panic, everything is right there in its place and all you need to do is follow the steps written below to get things back on track again.
Bring Back Missing ‘Sunset To Sunrise’ Schedule Option For iOS 9.3 Night Shift

    1. Open the Settings app.
    2. Now tap on Privacy.
    3. Tap on Location Services.
    4. Now tap on System Services.

    5. Look for a toggle switch called ‘Setting Time Zone.’ Tap to enable it, or turn it ON in other words.

    6. Now go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift. Tap on the ‘Scheduled’ toggle switch to turn it on and then tap on the ‘From To’ option that appears at the bottom. You’ll now notice that the ‘Sunset to Sunrise’ option has made a dramatic comeback.

iOS 9.3 Night Shift – How It Works, How To Set It Up

Apart from the ‘Sunset to Sunrise’ option making a comeback, you have also learned today that little toggle switches that apparently don’t mean anything can have a diverse affect on other features of iOS as well. We recommend users to refrain from going on a ‘toggle off’ spree, as the outcome can be uncertain in a lot of situations.
The ‘Sunset to Sunrise’ option is brilliant given the fact that the device adjusts itself for Night Shift mode without any sort of user intervention. After all, you don’t want to change the schedule time from time to time knowing that days are getting longer during the summers, right? Of course not.
If you found the above guide useful, then you know what to do; drop your comments in the section below. And we will be back with more handy guides for iOS 9.x so stay tuned!

Believe It Or Not But iOS 9.3 Is The Most Stable Release Of iOS In Years

iOS 9.3 is plagued with a bunch of strange issues, with Apple getting most of the things right with a release of iOS 9.3 for older devices. But despite all that, iOS 9.3 is deemed as the most stable release of iOS in years. That’s right, we found that hard to digest as well.

Despite Being A Spectacular Mess For Some, iOS 9.3 Is The Most Stable Release Of iOS In Years By Apple

An app analytics firm revealed that iOS 9.3 is the most stable release of iOS in years, having a crash rate of just 2.2 percent, according to data compiled in the last eight days. Compared to Android’s latest release, which has a crash rate of 2.6 percent, it’s hard to believe that Cupertino actually got a lot of things right with iOS 9.3 despite its apparent glitches and problems on a number of devices, especially older ones.
Download iOS 9.3 For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch – IPSW Direct Links

Interestingly, previous releases of iOS, which included iOS 8, 9 and 9.2 have a crash rate much higher than that of iOS 9.3. Things get even more surprising when you realize that all of these versions of iOS, except iOS 9.3, saw a crash rate of 3.2 percent just last week, which is absolutely awful in terms of general usability on a mass scale.

    Advertisements

At this current point in time, iOS 9.3 has a fair share of issues lurking around, with the major one being how the mobile firmware handles Safari links being accessed throughout the system, causing the device to crash in a lot of instances. Although Apple has promised an incoming fix, in the form of iOS 9.3.1 hopefully, it’s still surprising that the company’s latest firmware has an extremely minute crash rate.
READ Fix iOS 9.3 Crash Issue When Opening Safari Links

It’s also safe to assume that Apple’s public beta program has also paid off in a lot of ways to squash bugs and whatnot. Ever since the release of iOS 9, Apple has always released a public beta of its software parallel to the developer oriented release, allowing general users to assess and test out Cupertino’s upcoming firmware versions, gathering as much data as possible regarding performance and apparent bugs that can hinder the overall user experience for people.
It remains to be seen if iOS 10, due for announcement this June, will change the course in which Apple’s mobile firmware is headed. In terms of features, stability and whatnot, it will be interesting to see if Apple is going to play it safe or kick things up a notch with addition of excessive features.
    What do you think?

Download iOS 9.3.1 For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch – Direct IPSW Links

You can download iOS 9.3.1 update IPSW for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices right away. The update fixes the dreaded Safari link crash bug issue.

Apple promised that it would be releasing a software update in the coming days to fix the dreaded Safari link crash bug for all iPhone, iPad, iPod touch devices. Much to our surprise, Apple has acted in a super swift manner and has released the promised update for all devices right away.
The update can be grabbed either from Apple’s servers directly – linked below – or you can take the route of installing the newly released iOS 9.3.1 over the air. Simply launch the Settings app, navigate to General > Software Update, and tap on the ‘Download and Install‘ button when prompted for the iOS 9.3.1 download. The update is very small in size therefore it won’t take much time to download and install.

Do keep in mind that the installation will only take place if you’re on a WiFi network and have 50% or more battery life left in your device. We highly suggest that you save everything beforehand, connect your device to a stable WiFi network and AC outlet, then go ahead with the installation process. After all, you don’t want to end up losing your data at any cost, right? Of course you don’t.
You also have the option of installing iOS 9.3.1 directly from iTunes as well, and it only takes a few minutes to go about the entire process. But if you want things to go ahead as quickly as possible then we suggest taking the over the air (OTA) route which we have mentioned above.

iOS 9.3.1 Jailbreak Status – To Update Or Hold Back?

iOS 9.3.1 has been released, and at this point it seems as though a jailbreak will see the same fate as that of Pangu 9 for iOS 9.1. But the big question on everyone’s mind is – should you update or hold back from the latest firmware from Apple? We’ll try to answer that question by keeping the current scenario in mind.

iOS 9.3.1 Has Left Jailbreakers In A Limbo – Should You Update To Apple’s Latest Firmware Or Hold Back?

The news from the jailbreak world has come to a complete halt at the current moment, and it seems as though Apple has caught up with the vulnerabilities which hackers utilize to root a version of iOS, allowing us to install tweaks and themes. And the last update we got from the jailbreaking world was almost four weeks back, confirming that Apple hasn’t patched all vulnerabilities to make the iOS 9.3 jailbreak work, but this was on the fifth beta of Cupertino’s mobile firmware on which the jailbreak was applicable.
But till this day, the news regarding a potential jailbreak has completely died down, leading us to believe that we might end up seeing a jailbreak at a time when a particular version of iOS has ceased to be sign, much like iOS 9.1 Pangu 9 jailbreak.
    Advertisements

Download iOS 9.3.1 For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch – Direct IPSW Links

So what should you do at this current point in time? It totally depends on your take when it comes to jailbreaking. For instance, if you aren’t bothered about jailbreaking at all, then you can stick with iOS 9.3.1, reap its bug fixing benefits and stamp it as a walk in the park. And if you do care about jailbreaking, then we highly recommend that you either downgrade to iOS 9.3 or iOS 9.2.1 while there’s still time. There’s a possibility that Apple will stop signing iOS 9.3 or iOS 9.2.1, making the downgrade process absolutely impossible.
READ Apple Stops Signing iOS 8.4, Downgrade No Longer Possible

If you wish to downgrade, then be sure to check out our guide posted right here. Remember, do not hesitate one bit! It’s quite possible Apple might stop signing iOS 9.2.1 or iOS 9.3 a few minutes, or days from now. It’s very hard to judge what might happen in the coming days so make your move fast.
Lastly, there is a possibility that out of nowhere TaiG or the Pangu Team will surprise everyone with a jailbreak that works on iOS 9.2.1, iOS 9.3 and iOS 9.3.1. But of course, that’s all made up jargon.
We will keep you in the loop in the days to come so stay tuned!

iOS Mobile Device Management Protocol Can be Abused to Load Malware

Apple has worked hard to make it difficult to allow users to unwittingly install unauthorized and malicious apps onto their devices. Despite this, there is still one way in that attackers are still able to exploit: the mobile device management protocol. Researchers from Check Point Software Technologies will be demonstrating the hack as part of a presentation at the Black Hat Asia security conference on Friday.
The technique to inject malware onto iOS devices involves taking advantage of the communication between MDM products and iOS devices being vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks and can be performed with minimal user interaction. MDM products are used by companies to configure, control and secure the devices of employees remotely, as well as providing access to private app stores for easy internal app deployment. Of course, this attack relies on the target device being registered to an MDM server in order for there to be a connection to hijack.
Initially, a user would have to be tricked into installing a malicious configuration profile on their device, which could be easy to slip in with a number of the profiles that corporate users are used to installing such as VPN, Wi-Fi, email and other important settings. The malicious profile would then install a root certificate to route the device’s internet connection through a proxy. This can be used to route all traffic through a server under the attacker’s control and engage the man-in-the-middle attack. From there, the attacker is free to push malicious apps to the device using a stolen enterprise certificate or a malware app could be disguised as an app the user expects. A user must still accept the choice to install the app, but even if it is refused, the attacker is free to push the request repeatedly, essentially locking the device up until the install is accepted.
Check Point have named this vulnerability Sidestepper, due to the fact that it effectively side-steps the new restrictions for enterprise app deployments in iOS9. Misuse of enterprise certificates is nothing new either, with Check Point finding that in one Fortune 100 company, over 300 sideloaded apps signed with over 150 enterprise certificates existed. So while MDM technologies may be great for businesses, users must be just as much on their guard against attacks targeting those deployments as any other app or profile they may install.

Is iOS 9.3.1 Faster Than iOS 9.3? Series Of Speed Test Videos Reveal It All

iOS 9.3.1 vs iOS 9.3 speed test videos have surfaced online and answer the question whether or not Apple’s latest firmware release is faster than the previous one.

Does iOS 9.3.1 Outperform iOS 9.3? Speed Test Comparison Videos Aim To Reveal That

Apple released iOS 9.3.1 a couple of days back and it comes with changes that are barely negligible if you weren’t having any sort of problems on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch in the first place. But for others, it was a case of having their devices crash to bits whenever they tried to open a Safari link from anywhere in iOS. iOS 9.3.1 aimed to address that issue only, nothing else.
With that out of the way, does iOS 9.3.1 bring anything new to the table in terms of performance? A series of videos on YouTube aim to answer that question, and you can check them out down below.

Download iOS 9.3.1 For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch – Direct IPSW Links

If you’re looking for a personal opinion, I would suggest updating to iOS 9.3.1 right away as there’s absolutely no noticeable performance difference between iOS 9.3 and iOS 9.3.1. And besides, you also get the fix for the dreaded Safari crash bug issue, even though you didn’t ask for it, provided you weren’t face with the trouble in the first place. But if you were, then this update is absolutely a pot of gold for you.
Given that we’re quite a few versions into iOS 9.x’s life cycle, it’s clear at this point that we’ve reached ‘peak iOS 9’ and things won’t get any more better in terms of performance, whether you take into account older or newer devices. And with every new release of iOS, we have to digest the fact that older iPhones, iPads or iPod touches are going to take a hit in terms of performance, as they’re rocking hardware that was meant for software released for a certain time period.
READ Download iOS 9.3 Beta 4 - Devs Only

It remains to be seen what iOS 10 would do in terms of performance for older devices. Will it pump new life into obsolete hardware, or will it take things extra few miles further? Everything remains to be seen at this point in time.
Expect new software to come out of Cupertino this June at WWDC 2016, where’s it’s almost certain that Apple will reveal its plans for the future of its mobile and desktop OS. And we for one can’t wait to see what Apple has in store for everyone.
Let’s just hope we don’t see botched release like iOS 9.3.

Switching from iOS to Android - Closer than you might think

    Hardware Experience

Seeing Ryan transition from being a long-time Android user over to iOS late last year has had me thinking. While I've had hands on with flagship phones from many manufacturers since then, I haven't actually carried an Android device with me since the Nexus S (eventually, with the 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade). Maybe it was time to go back in order to gain a more informed perspective of the mobile device market as it stands today.

So that's exactly what I did. When we received our Samsung Galaxy S7 review unit (full review coming soon, I promise!), I decided to go ahead and put a real effort forth into using Android for an extended period of time.
Full disclosure, I am still carrying my iPhone with me since we received a T-Mobile locked unit, and my personal number is on Verizon. However, I have been using the S7 for everything but phone calls, and the occasional text message to people who only has my iPhone number.
Now one of the questions you might be asking yourself right now is why did I choose the Galaxy S7 of all devices to make this transition with. Most Android aficionados would probably insist that I chose a Nexus device to get the best experience and one that Google intends to provide when developing Android. While these people aren't wrong, I decided that I wanted to go with a more popular device as opposed to the more niche Nexus line.
Whether you Samsung's approach or not, the fact is that they sell more Android devices than anyone else and the Galaxy S7 will be their flagship offering for the next year or so.
Continue reading our editorial on switching from iOS to Android with the Samsung Galaxy S7!!
First, let's focus on the differences between the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Apple iPhone 6s hardware, and then take a closer look at their respective software ecosystems.

Longtime readers of the site might know me as a bit of an Apple fanboy. I currently use a MacBook Air, and an iPhone 6s my main devices. However, unlike what most may assume, this isn't because I'm a giant fan of Apple's software ecosystem, but rather their hardware. I have a myriad of problems with OS X in particular and iOS on occasion, but it's the quality of Apple's industrial design that keeps me coming back.
So far it's been almost 2 weeks using the S7, and it has left a distinct impression on me.

Even as a long time iPhone user the S7 hardware has impressed me. While the design may be a bit derivative of the iPhone 6(S), the build quality and construction are great. I'm personally not a fan of the glossy back of the S7, but that's more of a personal preference rather than a negative of the industrial design. I'll save some of this detail for the full device review, but overall my initial impressions are positive.
In a similar vein, let's talk about the camera on the S7. One of the main reasons I have stuck with the iPhone, and upgrade to a new model every year is because of the camera. While I use fancy cameras at work often, my phone is the only camera I personally own so having the highest possible is very important to me.
For years, handset manufacturers have been claiming that they have finally improved camera quality to the level of Apple's offerings, but I've never seen very good evidence of this. However, with the Samsung Galaxy S7, I am quite impressed with the overall camera performance.
While Samsung still seems to do substantial post-processing to photos to make them "pop" more due to higher saturation, I have been surprised by the quality of the exposures I have gotten from the S7.
Here's a preview of some of the side-by-side comparisons I've done so far with the S7 vs my iPhone 6s.

While the composition isn't exactly the same, this should give a good comparison of the two cameras
Frankly, it's a lot of personal preference as to which photo you think looks better in this comparison. While the iPhone camera is certainly more color accurate to the actual scene, the Galaxy S7 provides a photo that a lot of people see as aesthetically pleasing. Being more into photography as a hobby I prefer the untouched iPhone exposure which I can do later editing to if necessary, but a lot of people don't want to have to do that and just want a good looking photo with no effort.
Another interesting hardware comparison between the S7 and 6s involves their implementation of fingerprint readers. For unlocking the phone, the fingerprint scanner on the S7 seems to work fairly well. It struggles to register my fingerprint more often than I would like. I would equate the quality more to the first generation of TouchID on Apple devices rather than the second generation introduced in the S7.
However, one thing I miss from my iPhone is widespread software support for fingerprint authentication. While iOS has one API to implement this, Android has many different handset makers trying to implement their own methods. Google has attempted to fix this a bit with "Nexus Imprint" however the S7 does not utilize this.
That brings us on to the biggest issues I have with the S7, the software ecosystem.
    Toda a review:

Recent Apple Update Gives Siri The Ability To React To Sexual Assault Situations

Apple helped the change the way we interact with our smartphones when it introduced (not invented) Siri, the digital assistant that responds to voice commands. Whether it's firing off a text message or looking up the weather in Timbuktu, Siri can do it. She can do many things, actually, though up until recently, Siri wasn't of much help to victims of sexual assault.

As of a March 17 update, Siri now understands and reacts to phrases like "I was raped" and "I am being abused." Someone who's been the victim of a sexual crime may not know what resources are available outside of calling the police. Siri's response to such situations is to direct victims to the National Sexual Assault Hotline with a link to the organization's website.

The upgrade to Siri's vocabulary came about after a study in JAMA Internal Medicine published on March 14 highlighted that all of the major smartphone assistants did a poor job responding to various health and safety emergencies, including sexual assault. That's if they even responded at all, according to the study.

After the study was published, Apple got in contact with the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN), which operates the aforementioned hotline, for help with training Siri with common language that callers use.

RAINN also helped Apple craft Siri's responses in subtle ways by softening her language during these delicate situations. Instead of saying, "You should reach out to someone," Siri says, "You may want to reach out to someone."

Not everyone who's been sexually abused and owns an iPhone is going to turn to Siri for help, but for those who do, this was a much needed update. Prior to this, Siri would say, "I don't know what you mean by 'I was raped.' How about a web search for it?"

Someone who's been sexually assaulted may not feel comfortable talking to an actual person right away, hence another reason why this was an important update. It's sort of a double buffer, as victims can conjure up Siri, followed by encouragement to visit a website for helpful information and resources on how to deal with the situation.

iOS 9.3.1 Bug Lets Anyone Access Your Photos and Contacts – How to Protect Yourself

If you own an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus and have upgraded to iOS 9.3.1, you might be in for some trouble. A flaw discovered in Apple’s latest software version allows Siri to grant anyone access to your Photos and Contacts without a passcode. Here is how you can bypass your own passcode on iPhone 6s or 6s Plus to test this vulnerability, and then protect yourself using a few fixes.

    iOS 9.3.1 iPhone 6s vulnerability

After Apple squashed a bricking bug that iOS 9.3 brought in, a new video has surfaced showing a way to get access to anyone’s Photos or Contacts by trick-talking to Siri. While the bug has us worried, it definitely is one clever trick where anyone can get access to your data by asking Siri to search through Twitter for an email address, and then tapping directly into Contacts or Photos using 3D Touch.
The vulnerability only affects iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus as it uses the 3D Touch, which is only offered on these two smartphones.
How does the iOS 9.3.1 passcode bypass work

You can test this exploit yourself by following a few nifty tricks and using your personal digital assistant.

    • Lock your iPhone 6s or 6s Plus.
    • Get Siri on, and say “Search Twitter.”
    • When Siri asks what to search for, say: “@gmail dot com” or any other popular email domain. You want to find a tweet containing a valid email address.
    • Once the search results come up, tap on a tweet with a valid email address.
    • Bring up the contextual menu by using 3D Touch on this email address.
    • Tap Create New Contact > Add photo > Choose photo OR Add to Existing Contact.
    • This will let you view Photos and Contacts on your device without having to enter a valid passcode.

Some fixes to this Siri iPhone 6s vulnerability

The quick fix? Disable your phone’s 3D Touch and no one would be able to exploit this vulnerability to get access to your data. Another fix? Don’t update to iOS 9.3.1, if you haven’t already (yay for us super-slow people?).
On a serious note, you can disable Siri’s access to photos. This will prevent any intruders from using the Add photo option to get into your albums.

    • Go to Settings > Privacy > Photos.
    • Toggle Siri’s switch off.

How about protecting your contacts? A simple solutionis to disable access to Siri from the Lockscreen, which actually will render this vulnerability useless.

    • Go to Settings Touch> ID & Passcode.
    • Under Allow access when locked, disable Siri.

Apple is yet to give any official comment on this newly discovered security flaw in iOS 9.3.1. I can see my own iPhone 6s now giving a notification to update to iOS 9.3 instead of iOS 9.3.1 after this bug was reported a few hours back. We will update this post if there is any official word available.

Edge Jailbreak Tweak Gives Galaxy S7-Like Features On iPhone

This year, Samsung introduced a bigger ‘Edge’ variant of the Galaxy S7 that allows users to access specific information by swiping right from the edge of the display. If you’re an iPhone user and you’re trapped in the ecosystem, you can play with this functionality with the new stunning, Edge jailbreak tweak.

Edge Jailbreak Tweak Gives Your iPhone The Edge Functionality Found On Galaxy S7 Edge

The Galaxy S7 Edge boasts a dual curved display along the sides, that are devoted to fulfill personalized controls of the user. The Edge jailbreak tweak for your iOS device lets you experience configurable pages as found on the Galaxy S7. While users can customize them according to their preferences, the basic purpose of the functionality is to quickly access your favorite apps and other information. Customized tasks can be set as well as favorite contacts can also be selected with the tweak.

The Edge jailbreak tweak works the same way as the functionality found on the Galaxy S7 Edge. All you have to do is swipe left from the right side of the display and that’s it. The layout of the tweak is identical as it features up to four pages constituting the App Edge, Recent Edge, Task Edge and People Edge. To access these pages, just swipe left or right.

The App Edge page shows all your favorite apps. Adding an app is simple, all you have to do is tap on the plus button that opens a popup window from where you can choose your desired app. The Recent edge page shows all the recent apps that you have accessed. Custom tasks can be added in the Tasks Edge page like creating contacts, opening a new tab in Safari, taking a photo or more. Finally, the People Edge page is where you will find your contacts. Tapping on a contact would present three options out of which you can choose your desired one.
BIM For iPhone Lets You Open Links Without Leaving Messages App

Removing an app from the page is as simple as adding one, simply tap and hold the app icon until it starts to wiggle. Then press the red colored X button and that’s it. The Edge jailbreak tweak comes with its own configuration pane that provides basic controls like enabling or disabling the tweak, changing activation area, re-order pages and more.

The Edge functionality on the Galaxy S7 Edge is what makes it fascinating and different than its smaller variant. If you want the Galaxy S7 Edge-like features on your iPhone, wait no further and install the Edge jailbreak tweak from Cydia’s BigBoss repository for $1.99. The tweak is compatible with devices running iOS 9 and above.
This is it for now folks. Do you want a Galaxy S7 Edge-like functionality on your iPhone? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Apple’s Siri didn’t get the security email

The one where it was supposed to be unhackable
Fruity cargo cult Apple has been telling the world that its phones are so unhackable that it needs to re-write the operating system. Already the FBI has proved that wrong, but it seems that Siri is a backdoor making a mockery of Apple’s security.

Siri is allowed access to device and app information and a recently discovered flaw that would let unauthorised people access an iPhone's contacts and photos even from a locked screen.
The Tame Apple Press is claiming that the flaw is a feature because Siri is just eager to help anyone who asks. Basically it is like having a worker in an office who guides you past the security guard on the door and loans you their security card so that you can go anywhere in the office you like.
The flaw was found by Jose Rodriguez who revealed another lock screen vulnerability September last year which Apple actually patched.
This new hack involves activating Siri with a long press of the home button, asking her to make a Twitter search, and the hope that it results in some Contact data like an e-mail address. If that's the case, you will be able to use 3D Touch to bring up the option to add or modify the contact. This leads to opening the iPhone's contact list and being able to view Photos, depending on how the app is configured. Since 3D Touch is required in the process, the flaw is limited to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.
For now, the only way around this bug is to revoke Siri's access to Twitter and Photos until a fix is made available. Of course you could just hit it with a hammer and buy a phone which has security, rather than one which says it has security.

Security Flaw in iOS 9.3.1 Allows Access to iPhone Photos and Contacts

A video surfaced online yesterday purporting to show a vulnerability in iOS 9.3.1 that allows anyone to access photos and contacts on a locked iPhone without having to enter a passcode.
The YouTube video, uploaded by Jose Rodriguez and first spotted by The Daily Dot, depicts a user performing a Siri search followed by a series of relatively simple steps, one of which involves 3D Touch, limiting the exploit to iPhone 6s and 6s Plus devices.

The procedure starts by invoking Siri on the locked phone by holding the home button or using the “Hey, Siri” function, and then asking the personal assistant to initiate a Twitter search. When the returned results include contact details such as an email address, a 3D Touch gesture is used on the contact information to bring up a Quick Actions menu. Tapping “Add to Existing Contact” then brings up the iPhone’s Contacts list. By selecting a contact and opting to add a photo to the entry, the phone’s photo library can also be freely accessed.

Siri Trick To Activate Night Shift In Low Power Mode Is No Longer Available

A security exploit was discovered on iPhone the other day that allowed anyone to bypass lock screen and access photos or contacts. In a new server-side update, Apple has patched the vulnerability found in iOS 9.3.1. Even though Apple fixes vulnerabilities rapidly, we have seen a lot of security bypasses in the last couple of months. Apart from the lock screen vulnerability, Apple has also patched another trick, which was previously available to users.

Apple Patched Siri Trick To Enable Night Shift In Low Power Mode Along With Other Fixes

The lock screen bypass flaw was definitely nefarious to your privacy. However, this is not the only fix that Apple has implemented. Apple introduced the Night Shift feature in iOS 9.3 that shifted the display hue to a much warmer side of the spectrum. According to Apple, this feature will enable users to sleep better. Whatever impact does this feature has on the sleep, it is important to note that Apple has altered the activation trick of the Night Shift feature via Siri commands.
The Night Shift feature is unavailable if your iPhone is running Low Power Mode. However, there was a workaround available through Siri that allowed users to turn on the Night Shift mode in Low Power Mode. Now, when you try to enable Night Shift mode, Siri would warn you that the Low Power Mode will be disabled. This suggests that users can no longer enable Night Shift if their battery is below the 20 percent mark and running the Low Power Mode. Siri’s current response to enable Night Shift Mode on Low power Mode says: “In order to turn on Night Shift, I’ll have to turn off Low Power Mode. Shall I continue?”

Google Maps For Apple Watch Has Been Released

So if you want to take advantage of the new Night Shift feature, better keep your battery charged. Other than this, the vulnerability in iOS 9.3.1 allowed anyone to access your photos and contacts on lock screen. All that someone needed to do was ask Siri to make a Twitter search and then when the contact information was prompted, the virtual assistant would give complete access to Photos and Contacts. However, not every iPhone was at risk. The vulnerability only worked on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. This is because the exploit required the assistance of 3D Touch for the quick access of Contacts and Photos. It’s good that Apple fixed it.
Security flaws happen way to often these days, but we do have to applaud Apple for fixing the issue so rapidly. This is it for now, folks. Did you experience the lock screen bypass flaw on your iPhone 6s or 6s Plus? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Apple Stops Signing iOS 9.2.1 – What Everyone (Including Jailbreakers) Should Know

Apple has stopped signing iOS 9.2.1 firmware update for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch users. What does it mean for jailbreak users and everyone else? We’ll explain in the most concise manner possible.

iOS 9.2.1 For Compatible Devices Has Been Ceased To Sign By Apple, Making Downgrade No Longer Possible

Even after the release of iOS 9.3, subsequently iOS 9.3.1, Apple kept on signing iOS 9.2.1 firmware update for all compatible devices. But today, Apple has made the bold move and ceased to sign iOS 9.2.1. For starters, it means that you cannot downgrade from iOS 9.3.1 or iOS 9.3 to iOS 9.2.1 any longer. But the good news that runs parallel to this is: Apple is still signing iOS 9.3 at this current point in time, which means you can safely downgrade to the aforementioned firmware from iOS 9.3.1, given that you’ve updated to it in the first place.
We have a prompt guide outlining the entire downgrade-from-iOS-9.3.1 process, so be sure to check that out below.
    Advertisements

How To Downgrade From iOS 9.3.1

On the other hand, when it comes to a potential jailbreak, this is big news as well. First of all, if you missed the opportunity to downgrade to iOS 9.2.1, then there’s no way you can go back from iOS 9.3.1 or iOS 9.3, or even upgrade to that firmware from an older version of iOS 9.x. What this means is: if you were swift enough to perform a clean install of iOS 9.2.1 on time, then you’re all set for jailbreaking, given that an untethered solution lands in the first place. And keeping in mind how silent the jailbreak world has gone in the past few weeks, either we won’t see a jailbreak be released any time soon, or we’re in for a huge surprise from the likes of TaiG or Pangu Team.
TaiG v1.1.0 iOS 8.4 Jailbreak For Mac Released, Here's What Is New

All is still not lost though, as Apple is still signing iOS 9.3 at this current point in time, so we recommend that you do a clean install of that through iTunes and stick to it till have further updates from the world of jailbreaking. But, we’re making it abundantly clear at this point in time that news regarding a potential jailbreak for either iOS 9.2.1, iOS 9.3, iOS 9.3.1 is almost non-existent, if you keep in mind updates from the past few weeks, so do not hold your breath all the way.
We really wish that a jailbreak solution for iOS 9.3.1 drops in the public domain, rather than just iOS 9.2.1 or iOS 9.3. But given the shortage of news and updates, we’re concerned that we’ll see a solution more or less like the one released for iOS 9.1, something which was missed out by a lot of users, mainly due to the fact that iOS 9.1 is not being signed at this current in time.

iOS 9.3.1 Jailbreak Status – To Update Or Hold Back?

iOS 9.3.1 has been released, and at this point it seems as though a jailbreak will see the same fate as that of Pangu 9 for iOS 9.1.

There’s a possibility that Apple will stop signing iOS 9.3 or iOS 9.2.1, making the downgrade process absolutely impossible.

iOS 8.4.1 Patches All TaiG Jailbreak Exploits; Stay Clear Of The Update

Update: Apple has stopped signing iOS 9.2.1, making downgrading to aforementioned firmware impossible.

Ability To Hide Stock iOS Apps On iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Could Arrive Soon

We all have that ‘garbage’ folder on our iOS device’s home screen where most of the unused, stock apps live since day one. That folder contains the likes of Tips, Stocks, Game Center and more, depending on your priorities on certain aspects of iOS. And while these stock apps cannot be deleted, but it has now emerged that users might soon be able to hide them away for good using an official method.

iTunes Metadata Suggests We Will Soon Be Able To Hide Stock iOS Apps

According to certain ‘keys’ found in iTunes, users will soon be able to hide away stock apps for good, with no trace of them being found on the home screen. But the problem here is, it’s unclear whether or not Apple will actually make use of this feature.
Here is an actual screenshot showing the new keys. Every single app in the App Store now has these keys. So far they are all set to “false,” but their mere existence shows the mechanism Apple will use to choose which apps you will be able to remove from your iOS Springboard.

    Advertisements

Around 7 months back, Apple CEO Tim Cook made it public that the company is looking into giving users the ability to remove stock apps. But at that point in time, everything was rather unclear. But today’s findings add some fuel into a dimly lit fire and give us hope that we’ll be able to hide all the nonsense apps for good.
It’s highly likely that the feature will not make the cut with the release of a future iOS 9.x update, but instead could be a part of iOS 10, which is due for release later this year on a public scale.
iOS 9.1 Released With New Emoji, Wallpapers And More

Speaking of iOS 10, it’s not known at this point what the future mobile firmware from Apple will bring with it to the table. There’s a possibility that we’ll see a major revamp from Apple’s end this year as releases in the past couple of years have sticked to refinements rather than adding bold new features.
It’s too early to speculate what Apple might have in store for us, but we are definitely looking forward to the feature where we’ll be able to hide stock iOS apps. After all, it’s time Apple listened to our far-fetched cries!

Download iOS 9.3.2 Beta 1 – Available For Compatible iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Devices

Apple has seeded iOS 9.3.2 beta 1 for compatible iPhone, iPad, iPod touch devices and is now available to download for registered developers.

iOS 9.3.2 Beta 1 Arrives Just After The Release Of iOS 9.3.1

A week back Apple released iOS 9.3.1 download for the masses, bringing with it a fix for devices which was causing them to crash whenever they tapped on a Safari link. Today, Apple has released the first ever beta of iOS 9.3.2, giving us a clear sign that the company is not done with the development of its mobile operating system even for a few days.
On the face of things, it seems as though iOS 9.3.2 is a pure bug fix release with a load of focus on performance and stability. And given the fact that we’re seeing a beta of iOS 9.3.2 first and not the final release immediately, therefore it’s safe to assume that a bunch of work will go into its development process before it’s deemed ready for everyone to use.
At this current point in time, iOS 9.3.2 is available for registered developers only. This means that you must have an Apple Developer Program account with the Cupertino giant to get the ball rolling. The membership costs $99 on an annual basis, which grants you access to beta software for every Apple platform in return – iOS, OS X, tvOS, watchOS. A worthwhile investment if you’re asking us, provided you call yourself an Apple diehard fan. We’re sure you do.
    Advertisements

Before you go ahead with the installation process of the beta, it’s worth mentioning that you should load the new iOS 9.3.2 beta onto a device which is not your daily driver. We can’t say for sure at this point in time how stable the new pre-release build is and hence recommend that everyone should exercise a bit of caution. We’re quite certain that you have an old iPhone, iPad, iPod touch lying around to test the beta, so turn your stern towards that before making a mighty leap.
We will update our readers accordingly as more beta releases of iOS 9.3.2 make it onto the scene. And furthermore, we will update this post as well if we spot something noticeable in this release, so be sure to tune back in after a while.
We urge developers to try out this new beta to make sure that their apps and games are compatible with Cupertino’s latest mobile firmware. You don’t want a botched release now do you? Of course not.

    5. Select your iOS device from the top left hand corner of iTunes.
    6. Hold down the left ‘Shift’ key (Windows) or left ‘Option’ key (Mac) and then click on the ‘Restore iPhone’ button in iTunes.
    7. iTunes will now ask you to point it towards an iOS firmware file. Therefore select iOS 9.3.1 you downloaded in step 3 on your desktop.

iTunes will process the IPSW firmware file, verify it with Apple and begin the restore process. The entire process will barely take a few minutes and we highly recommend that you do not do anything else on your PC or Mac while things are in action.
How To Downgrade From iOS 9.3.1

Once the installation process is complete, your iOS device will boot straight into the welcome screen, asking you to set up your device the way you like it.
At this point in time we really wouldn’t recommend installing iOS 9.3.2 onto your device if you’re a non-developer. We’re sitting at the first beta of iOS 9.3.2, and it’s absolutely unclear where the piece of software is unstable the most, causing crashes in the most unsuspecting places.
If you did downgrade from iOS 9.3.2 beta, then be sure to let us know in the comments section below why you did so. We’re suspecting you didn’t want to go through the trouble of handling the beta itself, but of course, you might have your own reasons.

iOS Lock Screen Bypass Vulnerability Fixed By Apple

Apple has reportedly fixed a security flaw in the iOS operating system that would allow attackers to be able to bypass passcode lock screens on iPhone 6S and 6S Plus that are running version 9.3.1 of iOS. The bypass would have allowed malicious parties to be able to access the address book and photos of a targeted device, which could expose a lot of private data.
German security firm, Evolution Security, were responsible for discovering the bypass, which takes advantage of the integration of Siri with apps such as Twitter or Facebook, as well as the new 3D Touch feature that is included only in the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Even while the device is locked, an attacker would be able to request information on @ tags from Twitter, Facebook, and Yahoo. From there, the 3D touch’s hard push feature can be used to bring up the context menu for a string such as an email address. This menu provides the ability to add the data to a contact in the phone’s address book and from there, by accessing the choice to change user pictures, the photo gallery can be launched.
According to the Washington Post, the vulnerability was patched by Apple on Tuesday without users needing to install a software update. Considering the high level of security on the iPhone that led to Apple’s protracted battle with the FBI, it is surprising that so much user data can be exposed by a flaw in the lock screen, which is often the first and last line of defense for the security of the data on the device.

iOS 9.3.2, OS X 10.11.5 El Capitan Public Beta Released

Apple has released iOS 9.3.2, OS X 10.11.5 El Capitan for Public Beta testers. The new software arrives exactly after a day the aforementioned builds were seeded to registered developers.

Public Beta Builds Of iOS 9.3.2 And OS X 10.11.5 El Capitan Have Arrived

iOS 9.3.2 beta and OS X 10.11.5 El Capitan beta aren’t huge updates, and strictly focus on bug fixes and performance enhancements. Even with that packed under the hood, Apple deems it necessary for its pre-release software to be available to Public Beta testers, ensuring they get back a good amount of feedback, subsequently enabling the company to push out a stable piece of software come release day.
If you are a registered developer with Apple, then you can grab the pre-release bits of iOS 9.3.2 and OS X 10.11.5 El Capitan directly from the Apple Developer Program website. In case you’re wondering, the membership will set you back $99 on an annual basis, granting you early access to every beta software coming out of the Cupertino camp.

But, if you’re not a developer, then you can grab the Public Beta build of iOS 9.3.2 or OS X 10.11.5, which is absolutely free to download and try. Simply point your browser to beta.apple.com, enroll your device with Apple using your Apple ID, follow the given instructions, and wait for the software to install onto your device. Depending on the age of your device the software may take quite a bit to install so exercise patience. We also recommend backing everything up properly before you make the leap.

Although iOS 9.3.2 and OS X 10.11.5 are quite stable, given the software is in beta, but we recommend that you hold back from installing it right away and wait till at least two or three betas have hit the scene. At that point things will be more stable, and Apple would’ve ironed out most of the bugs from its new software.
Lastly, we recommend that you install the beta software on a device that is not your daily driver. But if you’re still feeling daring enough to try Apple’s new software, then that’s entirely your call and we can’t convince you enough to do what we suggest. Still, do the right thing.
If you do manage to download and install iOS 9.3.2 or OS X 10.11.5 El Capitan Public Beta onto your devices, then be sure to let us know about your experience in the comments section below. We’ll be waiting to hear back from you!
