Apple secures indie label contracts for Apple Music

Apple has managed to secure quite a coup in the build up to the release of its Apple Music streaming service. Following a fallout with Taylor Swift over royalties not being paid to artists during a free trial period, Apple reversed the policy and has now signed on some of the world’s biggest collections of indie labels: 3AD, XL, Matador, Rough Trade and the Merlin Network, which represents some 20,000 labels worldwide.
In a letter sent to members of the Merlin Network, CEO Charles Caldans said (via Billboard): “I am pleased to say that Apple has made a decision to pay for all usage of Apple Music under the free trials on a per-play basis, as well as to modify a number of other terms that members had been communicating directly with Apple about. With these changes, we are happy to support the deal.”
Apple now has a much rosier future for its streaming service, which until its policy reversal, looked likely to be devoid of many of the world’s most popular artists, due to labels not securing what they felt was a fair deal. If anything, the fact that Taylor Swift was involved, helped divert attention away from Apple, even if it was the subject of her letter – since she became the story, rather than the problem.

Apple Music’s radio stations of curated content could offer a different experience to Spotify and Pandora
This could also be a big win for Apple in that Spotify, its main rival in the streaming game, famously shunned Swift when she pulled her music after discovering that her royalty rate was less than a cent per song listen. At the time Spotify argued that it had paid her over two million dollars.
While likely to receive a lot more support from its core audience than a real new guy on the block, Apple has seen the difficulties Jay-Z’s Tidal service has had, so is likely keen to start off on the right foot by pleasing as many people as possible – even if it means paying out more than it wanted to.

Taylor Swift’s Top Selling Album, 1989 Coming To Apple Music

After an intense yet silent rage of Taylor Swift, Apple agreed to pay artists for streaming their music on Apple Music’s free trial period. The heat grew when a few days ago, Taylor Swift wrote a letter to Apple explaining why she is troubled by the thought of putting her music on the free trial period and not get paid for it. She exclaimed that artists are providing service and Apple has to consider the fact that services are not provided free. Henceforth, in a matter of time, Apple responded and agreed to pay artists, labels and publishers on Apple Music’s free trial period.

However, until this day, it was not sure if Taylor Swift, the keeper of the feud would still want to put her music on Apple Music. Finally, Taylor Swift has agreed to put her top selling album, 1989 on Apple Music as the service is released on 30th this month. The pay schedule devised by Apple for the free trial period is 0.2 cents per stream. Roll down for more details.
Taylor Swift Agrees To Put Her Album On Apple Music

Pharrell Williams has reached an exclusive deal with Apple on his forthcoming album ‘Freedom’ which was also demoed at the WWDC 15 event. However, Taylor Swift has not reached the exclusivity of her deal as yet. Talking about exclusiveness, Apple has made sure that its content is not available to its rival, Spotify which includes Taylor Swift’s album 1989 and other albums as well.

Taylor Swift @taylorswift13 After the events of this week, I've decided to put 1989 on Apple Music...and happily so.

Taylor Swift @taylorswift13 This is simply the first time it's felt right in my gut to stream my album. Thank you, Apple, for your change of heart.

Since Apple changed its mind to pay artists for the free trial period, Apple Music has added indie labels more than 20,000 through various deals. A music group stated after an agreement, “We think Apple Music provides artists with a business model that’s good for the long term and we look forward to its launch on June 30,”
Apple Music is an intriguing Music Streaming service by Apple that aims to change the way we hear music. The service includes worldwide radio, a platform for fans connecting with their favorite artists and a complete music streaming service for all. Users can subscribe to the Apple Music service in $9.99 per month however the first three months are a trial for free. The service will be available to Android users later this year along with Apple TV. This is it for now, let us know how you feel about this in the comments.

Was Apple's Taylor Swift fiasco a clever conspiracy?

Independent hints of dirty deeds done dirt cheap

Apple's new streaming service went live on Tuesday after Apple appeared to stuff up the launch completely.

When it started Apple announced that it would not pay artists a dime for the first three months of the service and they should be lucky to contribute to Jobs' Mob's pile of cash. It seemed that Apple changed its mind after popular beat combo artist Taylor Swift stomped her stilettos and got upset about it.
However the Independent smelt a rat. After all Taylor Swift objecting to something is not really bad for your business. Think of all the ex-boyfriends she slags off in her records – it did not seem to do their careers any harm.
The Independent pointed out that thanks to Swift, we are being asked to believe, Apple will now pay a whopping $0.002 per stream before tax. This means that if your song gets a million listens will result in a cheque for two grand to be split between the artist, the label and the tax man.
"Rubbish money in it for superstars like Taylor Swift, peanuts, and rotten ones at that, for virtually everyone else," the Indi points out.
Then the writer Andrew Dewson appears to start channelling me and the fun started.

"The original message Apple sent the music industry was crystal clear – your work is worthless compared to ours. The geeks have inherited the earth, and their revenge on the cool kids is brutal. So long as Apple is making money, the input put into creating the art it is selling or giving away has no monetary value. Zip. Nada."
So why then did Swift even sign up for it, given all her objections earlier on in the week? The short answer would be to do a search on Taylor Swift and Apple. Until last week Swift was a big fan of Apple and has a large number of products and apps for the iPhone.
She runs an iPhone herself and very publically ran down Apple's rival Spotify for playing much more than Apple is now offering.
Immediately after her objection, Apple "backed down" and announced a scheme which was an even bigger insult to the musicians that have the misfortune to be on its streaming service. Apple gained publicity, as did Swift, and the real losers was the rest of the music industry.
Dewson ended his piece with something which would normally seen on Fudzilla:
"The more Apple dominates the more it resembles a cult, with Steve Jobs an L. Ron Hubbard-like presence whose power grows ever more mythical. It gives me the creeps almost as much as the people who work in Apple's stores give me the creeps."
I normally write about how the mainstream press is fast becoming an extension of the Apple Press Office so thumbs up to the Independent.

Pressure is on for Apple Music, as music industry needs major help

The public launch of Apple Music is just hours away, and it looks like Apple will once again carry the entire weight of the music industry. Years ago, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) received help from iTunes at a time when music listeners were fully embracing illegal file sharing - and it seems like it could be up to Apple once again.

There is a new fight, one which the RIAA is struggling with, as more music listeners turn to online streaming services while listening to music. Millions of people use legal services such as Pandora, Spotify, Google Play Music, but don't pay.

After a free three-month trial period, users will be forced to pay $9.99 per month for Apple Music - or find a different service.

"We are at an important inflection point of the evolution of music," said Larry Miller, professor of music business at New York University's Steinhardt School, in a statement published by the Washington Post. "After more than 15 years in digital music transition, only Apple has the potential to push streaming - paid streaming - into mainstream adoption."

I'd beg to differ that services like Pandora and Spotify helped pave the way for Apple Music - but the RIAA, which is still terrified of sliding paid downloads, has forced both services into rather questionable royalty agreements. It's whether or not listeners want to test a free trial and then immediately sign up, or if they're satisfied with a free service.

You can legally listen to AC/DC, now on Spotify, Rdio, Apple Music

´Rock band AC/DC is now embracing streaming music, allowing its music to be shared on Spotify, Apple Music, and Rdio. The popular band has sold more than 72 million albums in the United States, and apparently hasn't liked the idea of streaming music for quite some time.

AC/DC only started to allow its music to be sold on iTunes just three years ago, so digital change isn't something the band has been quick to embrace. Remember, Metallica, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles all managed to finally come to terms with iTunes - but AC/DC continued to avoid joining the digital revolution.

"When the latest thing comes along, everyone wants to be the first to jump in. But we were hesitant," said Angus Young, AC/DC guitarist, in a statement to the Wall Street Journal last year. "It was only later on that people said, hey, you were pretty clever. We were doing better because people were still buying the physical product."

Apple Music is here and there's no easy way to import playlists from competing services

If you're thinking about giving Apple Music a try, prepare to spend a hefty chunk of time getting started. The reason is that there is no tool to bring your playlists over from rival services, unless you've been using Apple-owned Beats music.
Up until recently a workaround would have been to first sign up for Beats, transfer in your playlists, and then bring them into Apple Music. But that's no longer an option because Apple has stopped new signups for Beats Music.
According to The Verge, Apple hasn't commented on whether or not they'll release a tool to streamline the process. It wouldn't be unthinkable for a tool like that to surface, in June Apple came out with an app that helps people switch from Android to iOS, so we'll keep hoping.
iOS 8.4 with Apple Music launched Tuesday amid much curiosity and it has, mostly, mixed reviews. Fortunately there's a three-month free trial so you can experience it first hand -- you will be charged at the begining of the fourth month but you can deactivate the autorenewal option if you're not completely sold.

Similar to Beats, Apple Music tries to be both music streaming service and content curator. It will try to determine your musical tastes by having you choose your favorite artists and genres from a collection of red bubbles.
So if you're interested in trying Apple Music out, there are really only two options left. You can choose to dedicate an afternoon to recreating your beloved playlists by hand, or you can throw yourself to the whims of Apple Music's algorithm and see how close they get.

iTunes Match in Apple Music causing problems for many users

Apple Music launched a couple of days ago, and one of the service's features is the ability to match and upload songs from your existing personal music library so that you can stream them from anywhere. This feature, also available as a standalone product called 'iTunes Match', unfortunately hasn't been working well for many Apple Music users.
Many people who were already using iTunes Match before switching to Apple Music are reporting that the service has been altering their cloud music libraries without their permission. The most common issues include album artwork being changed, and tracks being moved from their correct albums to completely different albums for seemingly no reason.
Some users have been experiencing more serious issues, such as Apple Music completely deleting their iCloud music library after migrating from iTunes Match to the new music streaming service. Others have seen a few albums deleted from their collection without permission. Both issues are very frustrating for users that have previously experienced no issues with iTunes Match, especially for those without backups of their library.
Apple Music is also reportedly applying DRM to songs matched and uploaded to iCloud, something that iTunes Match never did. This means that if you want to download your previously DRM-free songs that you uploaded to the cloud, you won't be able to listen to them without an Apple Music subscription, as the DRM applied is the same Apple Music uses for offline listening functionality.
New users of Apple Music and its song matching functionality luckily aren't experiencing as many issues, although some people are still having difficulties getting the service to correctly match songs. Considering the service launched just two days ago, Apple can be excused for a few teething problems, but problems with people's existing iTunes Match libraries need to be addressed before more people are affected.

Apple Music subscriptions are up to 80% cheaper in emerging markets

In an effort to competitively price its new music streaming service in some of the world's emerging markets, Apple is charging as little as $2 a month for an individual Apple Music account in select countries -- 80% cheaper than the US.
In the U.S., an individual Apple Music account costs $10 a month and $15 for a family account. In poorer countries, the pricing is much lower. In India, where local streaming services charge as little as $0.60 a month, Apple Music is priced at $2 for individual and $3 for family plans. In Brazil, Indonesia, and Thailand, it’s $5 and $7; in Hong Kong, $6 and $10; and in Singapore, $7.50 and $11.
Apple likely hopes the low price plans will help sell more of its iPhones in these countries, where they make up a minority of the smartphone market. While these areas may boast cheaper Apple Music subscriptions than the U.S., Apple's hardware is not as competitively priced; an iPhone 6 in Asia can cost well over $600.
Even though Apple is late to the party when it comes to streaming music services, the company's massive reach combined with Apple Music's international availability and pricing will go a long way helping it capture a larger global subscription base than the likes of Spotify, Rdio, and Deezer.
For those wishing to experience Apple Music on a mobile device other than an iPhone, there will be an Apple Music Andriod app released this fall.

Analyst: Less than 1% revenue generated from Apple Music

media attention. The streaming music service and the Beats 1 live radio station may not win over users from Spotify, but will give other music listeners another option - $9.99 per account, or $14.99 for a family plan.

It looks like the service won't be a source of major revenue, and is expected to amount to less than 1 percent - around $1.8 billion - towards Apple's revenue next year.

"Apple Music matters because music is fundamental to the mobile phone experience," Gene Munster, analyst at Piper Jaffra, in a statement published by CNET. "Interestingly, Apple Music will also be available on Android and Windows, which doesn't matter from a revenue standpoint, but could help Apple attract incremental iPhone buyers from competitive platforms."

Apple Music has been publicly available for three days, and initial reviews seem to be all over the place. Some users reported early technical issues trying to get the service to run on PCs, but the mobile app has worked well for music listeners.

Users Report Data Loss After Activating iCloud Music Library In Apple Music

Apple Music launched with a blast, bringing all kinds of music from various artists, labels and publishers. Apple Music is a music streaming service with Beats 1 radio station hosted by well regarded musicians like Drake, Pharrell and others. The music streaming service came with the iOS 8.4 update along with many other bug fixes. However, users seem to have an issue.

Users claim that their host iCloud Music Library has been vanished after they activated the feature in Apple Music. On the other hand, some users recall duplicated song items, wrong metadata and some other issues. The well hyped Apple Music has disappointed many users with problems arising after they activated the feature.
Activating iCloud Music Library Causes Data Loss, Duplicated Items And More

When users first activate Apple Music they are acquainted whether to make use of the iCloud Music Library. This enables users to take advantage of remote streaming and offline caching as well as syncing your playlist to all cross-device-platform. Though it may be helpful for some users to use the iCloud Music Library but others have different views regarding the issues. AppleInsider states:

“For at least some users… turning the option on may not only delete local playlists but cause the songs that were in them to vanish. Syncing changes can potentially wipe out files and playlists across devices,”

Activating the feature in Apple Music causes tracks to be duplicated and incarnated tracks which were previously deleted from iTunes Match. Not only this but activating iCloud Music Library also causes incorrect metadata that affects artwork in music library. Apple also seems to be replacing the uploaded unprotected files, so users can download the protected versions, according to the blogger Kirk McElhearn.
Now you all must be wondering if there’s a fix to this issue.the least you can do is locate a older iTunes Library File on your computer and put it in the iTunes Folder. Then what you must do is rename newer file to corrupt file. This will restore the older file when iTunes restart. However, if you want to protect your data, leave the feature disabled in Apple Music until Apple devises of an appropriate fix. That’s all for now, let us know if you’re facing similar issues.

Keep Apple Music’s Billing Disabled For Auto-Renewal – How To

On 30th of June, Apple updated its OS to iOS 8.4 tagging in its well hyped Music Streaming Service called Apple Music. Presently, Apple Music is in heat considering its wide range of sub-services including the Beats1 radio station. Although the first three months are free for trial. the service comes with a monthly charge of $9.99 for individual and $14.99 collectively for up to six members.

To fit the three month trial period, you would need to have a credit card associated with your Apple ID. The credit card association is necessary as the subscription would not be possible without it, even when you’re just opting the free trial period. So you will choose your desired billing plan/subscription when you activate the free trial and the billing would begin as soon as the trial ends.
Disable Apple Music Auto Renewal Subscription

If you are a calculated person but forgets a lot, you wouldn’t want Apple to auto-renew your subscription at every month start. Its best if you disable the automatic renewal of Apple Music Subscription, so you can turn it back on when you need the music service or pay the bill whenever you want to. There are quite a few steps involved to disable the auto renewal of Apple Music subscription so better follow it as it goes.
    Step 1:
Begin by launching Apple Music and tap the profile icon which is located at the top left side of the display. You will see some options here, navigate to ‘View Apple ID’ to have a look at your billing profile.

    Step 2:
Among the options and information provided, look for ‘Manage’ under the subscription heading. (If you do not have a credit card associated with your Apple ID, the subscription heading would be absent). Now you are in your Apple Music subscription menu. The menu will display all information associated to your Apple Music’s subscription.
    Step 3:
In the Apple Music subscription menu, you will see the Automatic Renewal option. Toggle it to ‘Off’ and your auto renewal subscription will be disabled. Turn it back ‘On’ if you want to subscribe again automatically. Thats it to disable the auto renewal of subscription.

Cheers to Apple for including this option in Apple Music as a lot of people would be benefited with it. Even if you don’t need this option at this time, its important to be acquainted, in case you have to use it in future when the free trial ends. This is it for now, try this if you haven’t and let us know in the comments how it went.

FTC Primes Antitrust Investigation Into Apple Music Streaming Service

The verdict is still out on whether or not Apple's Music service is a hit, and until that's found out, Apple might have other things to fuss over. According to a trio of sources close to Reuters, US government antitrust regulators are perusing claims that the company could be guilty of breaking antitrust laws.
Before Music came along, Apple was safe, as it wasn't competing with streaming music services such as Spotify, Rhapsody, and so forth. But here's where the problem lays: because Apple now does compete with such services, the fact that it takes a cut of its competitor's profits is concerning.
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...pple_Music.jpg
How is Apple eating into its competitor's profits? With its App Store. If you subscribe to Spotify on your iPhone, for example, Apple gets the same 30% cut as it does with any other app. This isn't an issue ordinarily, but it can be since it's now profiting off of those competitors.
It's not said which streaming companies have tipped antitrust regulators off, but it's not hard to understand where they are coming from. Spotify, for example, charges the same $10/mo as Apple Music, but it has to suffer a loss of $3. That means Apple can more easily make a profit on its own service and gain even further through being able to charge a fee to its competitors.
Here's what's really interesting: Google is doing the exact same thing as Apple in this case. It likewise charges any developers that run their streaming apps through the Play Store a fee, and like Apple, it offers its own streaming service. This could be a case of companies simply going after the bigger fish, but if Apple is found to be breaking a rule here, it seems incredibly likely that the heat will spread to Google as well.
