Apple Music has 11 million subscribers

But Spotify is still the market leader with 20 million.

Apple is claiming that its Apple Music product has 11 million subscribers – slightly half of what its main rival Spotify can come up with.

Apple's service has started in June 2015 and the gain is not bad for such a short time – although many predicted it would be much higher by now. Spotify has 75 million active users today but most of them are nonpaying. It has .had 20 million paying customers when Apple started and has more today.
Spotify annoys its nonpaying users with super noisy commercials, in the hope that you will pay for membership to make the annoying loud adverts go away.

Apple doesn’t offer the option to stream for free (no surprises there) but it has a better family plan. Spotify offers a 50 percent off on a second family member while the first member pays €9.99 / $9.99. Apple Music on the other hand lets up to six different family members, play the music at the same time, for €14.99 / $14.99. Apple offers its music service to Android users too. Most of this approach comes from Apple Music's recently acquired Beats audio company. Beats had a similar family plan and since iPhone is popular among Americans that can afford one, it might eventually gain on Spotify. Competition is a good thing, at least for end users.
Netflix wants your money, Spotify / Apple Music wants your money / Fitness tracking aps want to lock you in the subscription base. Modern smartphone and computer life is starting to feel like mobile phone carrier and Cable operator monopolists who suck money out of your pocket through their monthly subscriptions.

Apple Music adding previously unlicensed DJ remixes, mashups

Apple has partnered with digital distributor Dubset Media Holdings to bring many thousands of previously unlicensed DJ remixes and mixes -- or in old people terms: that DJ music the kids are listening to -- to its Apple Music service. For now, these aren't available anywhere else, but Dubstep claims every distributor will be supported in time.

The deal is made possible by Dubset's agreements with over 14,000 record labels and publishers, as well as its MixBank technology (used in combination with other proprietary and related software), which can analyze songs to determine original artists and make sure their labels and publishers as well as DJs are paid accordingly, all at flat rates. It's an impressive feat given one of these mixes can have more than 600 different rights holders, and one that's already making both DJs and labels happy.

"Remixes are a huge part of our culture - they allow DJs and fans to put our own creative spin on music," says DJ Steve Aoki. "Apple working with Dubset now is a really simple solution to something traditionally complex, and allows everyone to make money on this content for the first time."

Meanwhile, Roland Leesker, CEO of electronic label Get Physical Records, says, "The new revenue and royalty potential once this content moves to authorized music services is enormous based on the amount of this content that's already being streamed without approvals and royalties,"

Kanye changes his mind, releases new album on Apple Music, Spotify

After stating his new album The Life of Pablo would be exclusive to Jay-Z's Tidal service, Kanye West has changed his mind and signed contracts with Spotify and Apple Music. The album is available on both services now.

Just earlier today it was reported Jay-Z has sued the original owners of Tidal for misrepresenting subscriber figures. Between that and the news with West, this hasn't been the smoothest of his business ventures. We've reached out for comment from him and will update this story should we hear back.

Tidal current sits at 3 million subscribers, good for 27 million behind Spotify and 8 million behind Apple Music.
