It looks like Apple might be planning a 4K iMac

It looks like Apple may be planning to launch a 4K iMac alongside of its 5K model later this year, according to references found in the code for the OS X El Capitan beta. Apple doesn’t currently sell a 4K Retina Display iMac, having jumped straight to 5K last year instead but such a product is referenced in the OS X El Capitan beta, which is currently with developers ahead of an official launch in October.
Since the 27-inch iMac sports the monstrous 5K resolution, it is possible that Apple is going to fit 4K on to a 21.5 inch iMac, although it will still need some fairly decent graphics horsepower to run such a resolution properly. We have heard that the 5K iMac does have some problems due to the lack of GPU power so maybe shrinking down to 4K will help alleviate that a bit.

Apple tends to have fairly good scaling options within OS X so having the fairly small 21.5 inch display usable at 4K should be achievable at the cost of some screen real-estate. Currently, Apple’s 21.5 inch iMacs are all 1080p, while the higher end 27-inch ones come with a 1440p display, with the 5K model sitting at the very top of the chain.
It is not known if Apple will replace 1080p screens entirely in its line up but it is possible that the company wants to help push the industry on to higher resolutions and finally start to leave 1080p behind.

New iMac Refresh With Faster Processors, Improved Displays Coming This Quarter

According to a high-profile industry analyst, Apple is set to refresh its iMac lineup with new processors and improved display panels this quarter. This would be a major upgrade to the iMac lineup since 2013.

Since October of last year, Apple has pushed out a number of 27-inch Retina 5K iMac models, with a recent one hitting the market starting at just $1,999. Before that, the rest of the iMac lineup was last refreshed in September 2013, which means that an update is now long overdue, considering how Apple has pushed out new hardware lately when it comes to its MacBook portfolio.
According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is going to refresh its iMac lineup with faster processors and better displays this quarter. One thing that remains unclear is if Apple is going to bring the Retina display to its 21.5-inch iMac lineup, once the refresh does make the cut, of course.
Retina display or not, Kuo reveals that the new display will feature better color saturation, something that will be achieved by Apple with a LED phosphor material dubbed as ‘KSF.’
According to Kuo:

We believe Apple will introduce new iMac models in 3Q15, which are expected to have key selling points such as more powerful processors and much better display quality. We predict the panel will use a LED phosphor material called KSF to notably boost color saturation.

The current iMac lineup is arguably the best there is from Apple, but with new Intel Skylake processors right around the corner, and Broadwell starting to be made available in a range of desktop and notebook devices, it makes perfect sense for Apple to push out an update this quarter, to keep itself ahead in its hardware game.
It would be a great move from the Cupertino giant’s end if it brings the Retina display to the smaller 21.5-inch iMac range. After all, it will give people with tighter budgets a chance to get a taste of a killer display without breaking their bank completely. But who knows, we aren’t completely aware of Apple’s plans at this point, and it just so might be the case that we would indeed see a Retina 21.5-inch iMac very soon. Or maybe not.
The takeaway point here is a rather simple one: if you’ve been planning to buy a new iMac, or maybe looking to upgrade your current rig, then we highly recommend that you hold back for a while until Apple reveals its plan for its desktop lineup.

4K 21.5-inch Retina iMac References Found In El Capitan Beta 6

Apple seeded beta 6 of OS X 10.11 El Capitan just yesterday, bringing with it a bunch of bug fixes and performance enhancements. And much to our surprise, the new build of Apple’s desktop operating system contains references to a 4K 21.5-inch Retina iMac, a device some believe won’t see the light of day any time soon.

This is a rather surprising development, considering it was only yesterday when we got glimpse of the news that Apple is all set to refresh its range of iMac computers this quarter, bringing with them improved processors and display panels. But the report fell short of revealing if the new range of iMacs will include a 21.5-inch model with a Retina display, further expanding Apple’s portfolio when it comes to super sharp panels.
Diving deep into OS X 10.11 beta 6’s code, meta data pertaining to a 4K 21.5-inch iMac has been found, adding fuel to the fire that Apple will indeed bring the Retina display over to its smaller iMac range of computers, allowing those with tighter budgets to delve into the world of super sharp graphics.
The native resolution of the new 4K 21.5-inch iMac is listed to be ‘4096×2304,’ which means that users can expect text and images to look absolutely crisp, considering how pixel density goes beyond the Retina mark when squeezed inside a small space of just 21.5-inches.
The meta data also reveals what the next iMac would visually look like, and on the face of things, users shouldn’t expect any noticeable change in terms of external hardware design. But given how popular Apple’s current design of its desktop is, we’re quite certain that the company would want to focus on the internals of the device rather than going all out and pushing out a redesigned iMac with brand new and reworked aesthetics.






KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo yesterday revealed that Apple is set to release new and refreshed iMac computers this quarter. Though he failed to provide a concrete release date alongside explicit details, but if today’s revelation is anything to go by, then it’s pretty clear that Apple wants to bring the Retina display to its 21.5-inch iMac. 4K 21.5-inch iMac Release Time-Frame Revealed

According to a freshly published report, Apple is said to launch a 4K 21.5-inch iMac really, really soon. The new 21.5-inch desktop will feature a stunning screen resolution of 4096 x 2304 pixels.

The news comes in from 9to5Mac, and the tidbit comes to them from ‘reliable sources.’ According to the publication, Apple is planning to announce the 4K 21.5-inch iMac at the end of October. The report also states that the new Retina iMac will make its big debut alongside OS X 10.11 El Capitan, and will start shipping in November.

Apple is indeed planning to release a new version of its 21.5-inch iMac with a 4K display this fall, according to reliable sources. The current plan is to announce the refreshed version of the smaller iMac by the end of October alongside OS X El Capitan and begin shipping the product by the beginning of November.

According to references found in OS X 10.11 El Capitan beta 6, the new 4K 21.5-inch iMac will boast a screen resolution of ‘4096 x 2304.’ This would, easily, put the 21.5-inch iMac well into the Retina range, offering ultra crisp text and graphics on-screen.
The report also states that the new 4K 21.5-inch iMac will have better color saturation while also coming equipped with faster processors across the board. But, there’s one thing which should be worth noting here – like the 5K Retina 27-inch iMac, the 4K 21.5-inch offering will definitely see a price increase, so buyers shouldn’t expect to pick up Apple’s new desktop at the current price point of the non-Retina 21.5-inch iMac.




For those who don’t want to break their bank over a Retina iMac, Apple will sell the 1080p iMac alongside the new offering, just like how the Cupertino giant does for the 27-inch iMac model.

We’re certain that Apple won’t announce the new 4K 21.5-inch iMac at its event next week, where the company is expected to roll out a bunch of new hardware, such as the iPhone 6s, the Apple TV 4, and maybe the iPad Pro and a refreshed iPad mini 4 as well. New iPads seem highly unlikely as Apple has opted to announce its tablets in a separate event in the past, but it’s quite possible that the company could break away from that trend this year.

4K 21.5-inch iMac Production Now Underway, All Set For October Launch

Apple’s ‘Hey Siri’ event was all about mobile and the company didn’t even talk about the Mac at any turn in the keynote, not even OS X El Capitan. And given the scale of Apple’s event, it’s highly likely now that Apple won’t be holding its usual October annual keynote, which is usually all about the iPad and announcing new Mac hardware. But that isn’t stopping Apple from launching a 4K 21.5-inch iMac in October.

According to the hit or miss source Digitimes, Apple’s new 4K desktop computer went into production just a couple of days ago and features a screen resolution of 4096 by 2304, something which has been confirmed in the past as well in a couple of reports.
The murmuring in the blogosphere suggest that Apple won’t be holding any event in October, and if that notion turns out to be true then it’s highly likely that the new 4K 21.5-inch iMac will see a soft launch, just like the iPod touch 6, which appeared in retail and online outlets overnight.
Apple’s 21.5-inch iMac has remained unchanged since September of 2013, where the company only added a low-key version to the lineup in June of 2014. Going forward, the company introduced a new Retina 5K iMac, and was even expanded later on with a much more cheaper model, to cater to those who want a sharper display without spending too much.




Apple releasing a 4K 21.5-inch iMac makes sense as well, because at this point in time, Apple needs a smaller desktop with a Retina display in the market if they want to rake in potential customers. After all, not everyone is sold to the idea of having a larger screen on a desktop class device.

It will be interesting to see which price point Apple want to hit with the new 4K 21.5-inch iMac, but given the premium display, we’re certain that the company’s new desktop will command a high price point. We’re also certain that Apple will keep on selling its non-Retina iMac lineup alongside its new Retina one to cater to a market that needs a powerful desktop computer that doesn’t rip through one’s pocket.
At the point, it’s pretty much a given fact that the 4K 21.5-inch is indeed coming, as we are starting to hear more and more about the device.
