Purported Microsoft Surface Mobile screenshot, specs leak

Rumours of a Microsoft Surface smartphone began to bubble up not long after the first Surface tablet was launched. As WMPU reports, such a smartphone was first in the news around three years ago when a device codenamed Project Juggernaut Alpha appeared in GPS logs around Microsoft's campus in Seattle.
Yesterday new details concerning this 'mythical' smartphone were published by WMPU. The Windows Mobile orientated news website got a tip off from its sources, spilling a pretty comprehensive list of tech specs for the rumoured Microsoft Surface smartphone. It also published a screenshot said to come from the same device being tested with a preview build of Windows 10 Mobile.
The new Juggernaut Alpha must be significantly upgraded from the three year old apparition that never got released. WMPU says that the following list are its key hardware specs:

• Display: 1440×2560 16:9 AMOLED 5.5″ ClearBlack Gorilla Glass 4
• Processor: Intel Atom x3 (SoFIA) 64-bit
• Camera: Back: 21MP PureView Zeiss 6-lens Front: 8MP Zeiss Wide-Angle
• RAM: up to 4GB RAM (lower end with 3GB and higher end with 4GB)
• Operating System: Windows 10 Mobile (Current revision of the device is running 10.0.10514.19)
• Storage: Options will include 64GB and 128GB with MicroSD Expansion up to 256GB
• Surface Pen (Similar to Note 5),
• USB Type-C
• Wireless Charging
• Aluminium & Magnesium unibody

Further information gleaned from WMPU's report says that the handset isn't yet able to run Win32 apps.

I'd like to see a Surface smartphone with an Intel or AMD x86 processor. However the above specs and rumours are all we have to go on right now and they're only from one source. Picking through some of the key specs, the current Intel Atom x3 (SoFIA) 64-bit processor isn't able to support other key hardware purportedly in the device such as; the screen (resolution) and camera (pixels), nor USB 3.0 or dual-screen Continuum productivity. If the essence of the rumour is correct it is possible that when the Surface smartphone appears there will be a newer Atom x3 from Intel to support the rest of the spec, or another more powerful processor will be employed.
We do expect to see some new Microsoft smartphones soon, but probably not this Surface Mobile. IFA starts on 5^th September and Microsoft will be there rubbing shoulders with LG, Samsung, Sony, Motorola, HTC, Huawei and other key mobile technology players.

Microsoft is working on Surface Phone for 2H 2016 release

In what shouldn't come as a massive surprise, Microsoft is indeed working on a Surface Phone, and it's set to come out in the second half of 2016, at least if a detailed report from Windows Central is to be believed.
The report starts by saying that a metal-bodied phone developed by Microsoft and with Intel inside has allegedly been canceled. The device was expected to be released around May 2016, and appeared to be a carryover project from Nokia, but due to issues it will not be seeing the light of day.
However, the cancelation of the aforementioned smartphone has meant that the Surface team, headed by Panos Panay, has the green light to develop a flagship Surface Phone. The project is still in its early days, and Microsoft is experimenting with a bunch of hardware options, but it appears as though a Surface Phone is actually happening.
According to Windows Central's information, Intel is still working with Microsoft on this project, and that could be to develop an x86-based SoC to power the handset. This could potentially give the Surface Phone the ability to run desktop x86 apps through Continuum, although this feature hasn't been confirmed.
As the Surface Phone is still in the early stages of development, it will be a while before it's released. The report suggests Microsoft may release the device alongside the next major Windows update, Redstone, sometime around August 2016. While this date isn't exact, the phone is expected to come out in the second half of next year.
The Surface Phone could be just what Microsoft needs to breathe some fresh air into Windows 10 Mobile. While the device is still quite some time away, and pretty much every aspect of it is still up in the air, if the Surface Phone is anything like the recent tablets and hybrids from the company, it'll be a pretty compelling product when it's released.

Looks Like Microsoft’s Surface Phone Could Release Much Sooner Than Expected

After the release of Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, looks like software giant Microsoft isn’t quite done releasing high-end Windows 10 powered handsets. The company is said to be launching its Surface Phone, but when will we see it?

Microsoft’s Surface Phone Expected To Be Released During Q1, 2016 – What Specifications Should We Expect?

It appears that Microsoft’s upcoming Surface Phone is not going to feature any chipset from Qualcomm, or MediaTek, meaning that we will not get to see Snapdragon 810, Snapdragon 820, or Helio X20 in action. However, rumor has been going around that Intel is going to step up its game and incorporate its x86 architecture chipset inside Surface Phone.
The phone is allegedly being called ‘Panos’s Phone’. Panos Panay is Microsoft’s overseer of devices, and the official codename of the smartphone is ‘NorthStar’. Now why would Microsoft and Intel form a tag team in order to produce a Windows 10 powered smartphone running the latter’s processor. Well, turns out that not so long ago, we reported that there was a very small chance that the software giant would entertain the idea of being able to run Win32 applications on a smartphone.

Since ARM SoCs cannot run x86 instructions, it obviously falls upon an x86 architecture compatible processor to be able to do the job without running into a boatload of problems. Microsoft’s Kevin Gallo said that it is highly possible that users will one day be able to run Win32 desktop apps on their mobile device. The only thing that they will have to work with is connecting the Windows 10 smartphone to a large monitor or screen via Continuum. According to Gallo, it is a very high possibility, which is why the company is looking into such a process.
Let us refresh your memory for a bit. Continuum, is a Windows 10 Mobile’s exclusive feature; this feature allows you to connect your Windows 10 phone, which can be done either wirelessly or via the Continuum Display Dock (sold separately), to a larger screen and just let it run like a PC. If Win32 desktop apps are actually able to become a reality by running like this, it would present a very long list of benefits. Let us hope that Microsoft finally starts taking things seriously with Windows 10 Mobile.

As stated previously, Surface Phone is slated for a release during the first quarter of 2016. Let us hope that the leak turns out to be true because we are dying to find out how this particular handset is going to perform.

Surface brainchild Panos Panay was interviewed by GeekWire, where he briefly, among other topics, addresses the possibility of a Surface Phone. What features would a Surface Phone need to get your interest?

Microsoft’s Panos Panay is known as the executive responsible for the company’s Surface lineup, which has expanded this year with the introduction of the Surface Book laptop. But since earlier this year, he has also taken on a broader role overseeing the company’s devices, including the Microsoft Band, the company’s smartphone lineup and the HoloLens blended reality device.

Surface Phone sort of mentionedby Microsoft Chief of Marketing

The idea of a first party Surface Phone device in the same vein as the other Surface devices from Microsoft has long been hinted at, though nothing has ever materialized short of a few very interesting artistic renderings.

During a recent webcast for Windows Weekly, the Chief Marketing Officer, Chris Capossela, joined Mary Jo Foley, Paul Thurrot and Leo Laporte to talk about the future of the world of Window Phone and discuss the direction that they Microsoft can, at the very least, publicly discuss.

The landscape has been rather sparse, and news even more sparse, so Mary Jo Foley very pointedly asked Capossela to "give me something to hope for in the new year as a Windows Phone fan, Chris, because I'm abandoning hope." A strong statement to be sure, but one that expresses a lack of innovation on the mobile front, even with the impending rollout of Windows 10 for mobile for more devices.

Microsoft's Capossela replied that "We're clearly very cognizant of our position in the phone world, and frankly we've done the hard yards to retrench and have an approach that, in this coming year, is very much about trying to satisfy our fans, and trying to have a great success in the business world, for businesses who want to buy phones for their employees." After which he admitted that there was a lot of work that still needed to be done, and ideas formed, to truly break back into the mobile market.

So it looks like the possibility of a Surface Phone is indeed somewhat real, even if it's not the most probable of ideas. At the very least it would be possible to extend the quality of the Surface products over to the mobile space in much the same way that Apple has done with their hardware/software controlled eco-system.

Microsoft working on a "breakthrough" smartphone, strongly hints that it's the Surface Phone

Microsoft’s past performance in the smartphone market hasn’t been particularly impressive. Windows phones made up only 2.6 percent of the worldwide smartphone OS market in the second quarter of 2015, a decline from 3.4 percent in 2013. But now, the Redmond company has confirmed that is working on something that may turn its smartphone fortunes around.
Speaking during an episode of This Week in Tech’s Windows Weekly podcast, Microsoft executive vice president and chief marketing officer Chris Capossela revealed that the company is working on a “breakthrough” new smartphone – and it’s not a going to be another Lumia.
While Capossela didn't specifically say the new device will be the long-rumored Surface Phone, he did strongly hint at it. “With Surface we had a bunch of early misfires, but that notion of a tablet that could replace your laptop. That notion of saying, Hey, Apple wants to sell you an iPad and they want to sell you a Mac, we think there’s one device that exploits the seam between those two devices. We need some sort of spiritual equivalent on the phone side that doesn’t just feel like a phone for people who love Windows.”
Compared to today’s smartphones, the Surface Phone is expected to be much more like a PC. Microsoft will likely ditch the traditionally-used Qualcomm chips for Intel architecture and use a software setup more commonly found in home computers. It’s also rumored that Microsoft will be giving the Surface Phone the ability to run full Windows software, not just apps from the Windows Store market, creating a true PC/smartphone hybrid device.
A Surface Phone would likely utilize Windows 10 Mobile’s Continuum feature that can turn a smartphone into a PC by allowing it to attach to a monitor, mouse and keyboard in order to create a desktop-like experience.
We may have to wait a while before we see the Surface Phone, although some reports say it could be here as early as the second half of 2016. Speaking about the mystery device, Capossela said "I think we have to do more breakthrough work" to make Apple fans "pause before they buy their 17th iPhone.”

Details of Microsoft's coming Surface phone have started appearing on online and we did a quick shifty amongst them to find out what was the most likely.

Firstly we are pretty sure that the Surface will be out this year.The launch date is up in the air. It could be launched at the IFA in Berlin or as some reports suggest in October along with other Surface products such as the Surface Pro 5 and the Surface Book 2. This would set Microsoft up for Christmas sales, however with the phone being targeted at business users with extra networking and security bells and whistles this is less important.
The device should be a unibody design made with an aluminium and magnesium combination. It will have a 5.5-inch phone with an AMOLED display, capable of producing a 1440 x 2560 pixel screen resolution. Redmond's Surface Pen might work on it.
The processor is likely to be an Intel Atom x3 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. Microsoft might also release versions with 4 and 6GB RAM capacities. Some versions will have 64GB others 128GB internal storage but there are rumours that it could also have between 256GB to 500GB.
Obviously the OS is going to be Windows 10, and Microsoft appears to be trying to work out how to incorporate a full-blown Windows 10 experience on a mobile device given that this will be branded as a business phone. The latest OS on the rumoured device will also mean that it will be compatible with all Microsoft products from the Xbox One to a home desktop running Windows 10.
The camera specs have not yet been widely reported but initial reports have indicated that a 21MP PureView rear lens and an 8MP Zeiss Wide-Angle lens may be used on the Surface Phone. Nokia's trademark PureView lens was first seen on the Lumia 1020, which included a 41MP rear camera. The Lumia 1020 camera has been rated as probably the best mobile camera with reviewers comparing it to DSLRs rather than phone cameras.
One thing is that that the price is going to be steep mostly because it has more features and quality gear on board. Certainly more than an iPhone. Some have speculated that it might be around $1,000 particularly if you have the higher storeage features.

With Windows 10 Mobile left in a state of a colossal disaster, Microsoft has now been reported to be working on not one, but three Surface Phone devices, and they are scheduled to be arriving next year. What sort of hardware should we be expecting from these Surface Phones?

How Can Microsoft Hope To Revive Its Windows 10 Mobile Platform With The Help Of Surface Phones?

Microsoft’s Surface lineup has been fairly successful in bridging the gap between laptops and tablets. Now, if only the tech giant could work on reducing the pricing of its slates to such an extent that consumers actually believe that they are getting value for their money, then yes, we definitely have a game changer on our hands. However, what hasn’t been a game changer for the company? Windows 10 Mobile.

With an unfinished, buggy software, that has a myriad of performance-based issues, Microsoft has a continent to cover in refining its mobile OS. We will go this far to say that Android performs far better than Windows 10 Mobile. Now, coming to the idea of Surface Phones, the term ‘Surface’ could be used to describe a product that is used to close the functionality gap of two machines. With the Surface Pro lineup, Microsoft did decrease the functionality gap between slates and notebooks, but there are more than a few loop holes to cover up before we can actually term tablets are the ideal substitutes of laptops.

We currently have no clue what hardware will be packing inside these mobile devices, but we do know that each of the three models will be targeting a different audience. One model cater towards enterprises, one for smartphone enthusiasts, and one for the general consumer, and that pretty much targets the covers up Microsoft’s plans. However, as much as these devices are impressive on the hardware and feature side, it’s the software that we are most concerned out.

With a limited library of applications, Microsoft needs a brand new strategy which will compel developers to roll out dedicated apps for its own mobile platform. Strengthening your mobile operating system is far more crucial than working on bringing new devices out into the market. Since all three unnamed models are expected to be released during 2017, Microsoft still has time to refine Windows 10 Mobile.

Creio que aquilo são apenas concepts. A Microsoft a lançar um Surface Phone deverá ser para 2018. Até lá vão limitar-se a ver a plataforma definhar. Este ano é Xbox Project Scorpio e refresh de hardware no Surface Pro e Book, talvez aparecendo um de 10".

Fala-se que a Microsoft com o Windows on ARM, possa trazer o full Windows para smartphones e talvez venha a suceder isso no Surface Phone. Correr programas Win32 no smartphone, desde que ligado a um monitor com mais de X polegadas, através do Continuum (a ferramenta de software da Microsoft que permite correr software de ecrãs pequenos em ecrãs maiores).

Será uma maneira de contornar a fraca app store que tem de momento. Veremos o que aí vem.

Boa tarde ,vou ser um pouco do contra ,o wm10 nunca esteve tão bom(como SO) .nem todos são app dependentes .
Vim do android ,e dificilmente voltarei para lá(para não dizer nunca) .O problema do WM10 agora é a falta de hardware .Tenho um 950xl ,e posso dizer que é o melhor telemovel que tive até hoje .
Quem quiser as apps ou jogos da moda ,fique no android ou IOS ,mas quem não faça muito uso de apps ,e queira um telemovel pratico ,o WM10 não deixa ficar mal ninguém .Mas as principais apps estão lá (FB whatsap,instagram etc.)o Snapchat é que não ,que o CEO tem um ódio de estimação á MS .Sei que é uma opinião pessoal ,mas a UI do WM10 bate aos pontos a do Android e IOS .quele ecrã inicial é prativamente o mesmo desde de que existe android e IOS.

O problema do WM10 é a falta de apps e de hardware ,porque versatilidade tem o SO .O IOS é um sistema completamente fechado .
Quem comprar um surface phone ,e espero que não me doa os dentes até ele sair ,sabe o que vai comprar ,e deverá de vir com características que não vão existir na concorrência, ,caso isso não aconteça ,morre antes de nascer .
Em maio já se deve saber alguma coisa ,para bem dos utilizadores do sistema ,e acima de tudo dar confiança ás muito poucas OEM que ainda acreditam no sistema.
O meu maior receio é que se o SP vier com W10 e não WM10 ,duvido que a MS mantenha o WM10 no ativo por muito tempo .
