    Consigo achar tão impactante a

Ouvir, cheirar e sentir, eu diria.

The Cable Industry Wants Netflix Investigated For Throttling

Last week Netflix acknowledged that it has quietly been throttling the Netflix streams of companies like AT&T and Verizon for five years. Why? Netflix claimed it was to help these companies' customers better deal with usage caps, adding that it doesn't throttle streams to Sprint and T-Mobile because "historically those two companies have had more consumer-friendly policies." That Netflix was doing this covertly quickly raised the hackles of companies like AT&T, which claimed it was "outraged" by the revelations.

The American Cable Association went a step further, issuing a statement calling for an FCC investigation, despite the fact only wireless streams were throttled (to 600 kbps). AT&T said it was "disappointed, but not surprised, that Netflix used its immunity from the FCC's Net Neutrality rules to engage in this practice." The organization, which mostly represents smaller cable operators (but has NBC Universal as a member), also took aim at the FCC's net neutrality rules, calling them "horribly one-sided and unfair because it leaves consumers unprotected from the actions of edge providers that block and throttle lawful traffic."
The problem with that logic? Net neutrality rules were created specifically for broadband precisely because of limited competition in the sector. While a customer can stop using an "edge provider" like Netflix whose policies they don't agree with, that's often not an option when it comes to broadband providers. Were there more broadband competition, we wouldn't technically need net neutrality rules.
Still, the ACA was undaunted in its demand for an investigation.
"ACA calls on the FCC to initiate a Notice of Inquiry into the practices of edge providers and how these companies can threaten the openness of the Internet," the group said. "Under Section 706, the FCC has the authority to conduct such an inquiry and issue regulations, should it be deemed necessary."
A Netflix blog post states the company was only looking out for the nation's capped wireless users.
"We believe restrictive data caps are bad for consumers and the Internet in general, creating a dilemma for those who increasingly rely on their mobile devices for entertainment, work and more," Netflix said. The company added that it was interested in "striking a balance that ensures a good streaming experience while avoiding unplanned fines from mobile providers."
If there's one thing Netflix can be dinged for, it's for failing to be transparent when it has spent the last few years lecturing ISPs on transparency. The company says it's revealing a "data saver" control scheme in a few months that will give mobile users more control over their stream quality and Netflix data consumption.

Netflix Party Lets You and Friends Watch Netflix Together In Different Rooms

Remember those times you see a really good movie on Netflix and just want to watch it with a friend? If that has ever been you, you know that sometimes you can’t be in the same room to watch Netflix every time you find something interesting to watch. In this day and age being stuck in the same room to watch a film really shouldn’t be a problem, and Netflix Party looks to solve that problem.
Netflix Party is a google Chrome extension that will let you and friends watch Netflix from two different machines. Adding synchronised video playback you never have to worry about your friend being behind or in front of you, even during those embarrassing moments when the call of nature interrupts an action scene. Alongside the playback options, Netflix Party goes so far as to add a group chat to the side of the movie, meaning that if you wanted to discuss and talk during the film without microphones disturbing your experience, the option is there to write your opinions about the plot holes and characters without disturbing the experience for everyone.
You can find the extension here, and the official site has a three-step guide on how to start using the extension which we can summarise right here.
    Step 1: Install the extension
Step 2: Open a video on Netflix
Step 3: Click the NP icon to start/join a Netflix party
Simple and enjoyable, just what we like to hear.

Netflix's library of original content is growing roughly 185% per year

Netflix has some of the best TV shows around, with original series like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black - but did you know their original content creation has increased by 185% per year? That's impressive.

According to data published by AllFlicks, which has mined Netflix's online catalog and cross referenced it with Wikipedia's list of Netflix original programming - Cordcutting.com created a chart that shows the sharp rise in original content from Netflix. From Q1 2012 to Q2 2016, Netflix added 111 original series and films, an impressive feat to say the least.

We see a quarterly growth rate of 34.22%, and an average annual growth rate of an astonishing 185.41%. The future growth rate should be higher, with Netflix announcing it will spend a huge $6 billion on original content in 2016 alone.

FCC Says Netflix Throttling Itself Isn’t Against Net Neutrality

Recently the popular streaming service Netflix admitted that when it comes to mobile phones accessing their system, they reduced the video quality on most mobile networks to help avoid excessive data usage. This caused an uproar given Netflix’s stance on the topic was to support the concept of Net Neutrality (the idea being that all traffic on the internet is equal and, therefore, shouldn’t be prioritized or capped based on its content). It nows seems that the FCC have stated where they stand on the matter.
The FCC’s Chairman Tom Wheeler stated that the Federal Communications Commission had no intention of investigating the service for throttling its own streams. Critics of Netflix agree with the idea that the FCC’s ruling on net neutrality applies to internet service providers, those that provide the entirety of the internet to you rather than just a service within the internet. Even with this agreement, they want the company investigated, with Wheeler clarifying that they “do not regulate edge providers”. An edge provider in this case is what the FCC title online content providers, the ones that actually use the internet to provide a service rather than provide access to the internet itself.
This comes at a time when the FCC are openly investigating mobile providers for their internet usage systems, with companies like TalkTalk offering their Binge service, a service which allows you to stream unlimited amounts of content from select providers that have partnered up with TalkTalk.
Where do you stand? Should companies be allowed to reduce quality to ensure you get a smooth service without additional costs? Should they be allowed you provide you with “unlimited content” from select providers?

Data show Netflix users are happier with original content

Netflix's original content is growing about 185% per year with an even higher rate expected next year and the results are strong on the user end: Netflix original programming is rated 11.5% higher than syndicated content on average, according to data mined by AllFlicks.

Netflix documentaries do best, rating 4.08 stars on average; shows do worst, but still beat out syndicated shows by 6.5%. Meanwhile, other content rates an average of 3.47 stars.

It's important to keep in mind total Netflix content has dropped 31.7 percent in two years as the company has emphasized original content, indicating a significant drop in syndicated works. As such, with more selection, it's possible syndicated works would be rated higher overall.

Netflix to increase its standard option pricing to $9.99 per month

There are a lot of people who are still paying $7.99 per month for the standard Netflix offering, but the company will be charging $9.99 per month starting next week.

For $9.99 you'll receive concurrent streaming options as well as HD playback. If you don't care about multiple people using your Netflix connection, you can opt out of the upgrade, and continue forging on with the $7.99 per month plan.

Users that will be hit with the change will be emailed soon, allowing them time to opt out of the change - or allow it to happen. Will you be changing? Or are you happy with the $7.99 pricing?

Netflix to Increase Prices For 37 Percent of US Customers

Netflix has rapidly become a legitimate rival to traditional Television broadcasts and revolutionized the way we all watch video content. Instead of having to view your favourite programmes based on their pre-arranged listings, you can instantly access a huge library without adverts. Furthermore, exclusive programming such as House of Cards showcases the quality content, and value when subscribing to Netflix’s service. While there is competition from Amazon Instant Video, Hulu and others, none of these really compared to Netflix’s ability to offer a massive range of blockbuster films.
Unfortunately, price increases have been occurring on a regular basis which might deter some users from continuing their subscription. Furthermore, the company recently clamped down on users accessing the US library with a DNS or VPN. Annoyingly, consumers outside of the US often have to put up with a fairly restricted selection of TV shows which is down to licensing agreements. Once again, this is another reason why certain long-term subscribers might feel inclined to cancel.
Some time ago, Netflix announced that they would be increasing prices gradually and freeze the cost for current users for a limited time. The ‘grandfathering’ period has now expired which means that almost 17 million US subscribers protected by this scheme will face a price increase from $7.99 a month to $9.99. This follows a 50p price hike in the UK and it looks likely that the company will continue with this strategy especially for those purchasing the HD tier. Of course, acquiring the broadcasting rights to expensive programming is bound to cut into Netflix’s profit margins. It’s clear they want to offer the best possible library and form the new instant form of Television.
However, if the prices continue to rise and eventually cost more than a cable service, I’m not sure how many subscribers they will lose. In the USA, I don’t think it’s likely, but disgruntled customers outside of the US market might feel they’re receiving poor value due to the smaller library while paying a similar price.

Netflix price-hike won’t grandfather you in

If you’ve been a Netflix subscriber for a number of years, you’ve likely taken advantage of the fact that as prices were changed and options added, you were grandfathered in at the lower price point. That’s not going to happen this time around though, as the latest Netflix price change is hiking everyone up a couple of pounds.
Expected to take place in May, Netflix is making its £6 a month package the true economy option. While it will remain, it won’t have access to HD streams, nor the ability to watch content on two screens simultaneously. Anyone wanting those options will instead have to pay £7.50 a month for the privilege.
The premium tier for Netflix streaming will still exist, offering 4K streams and the ability to watch as many as four different shows on different screens at once, but that package will set users back £9 per month.

This whole process of bringing all users in-line with new pricing plans is what Netflix calls ‘un-gradfathering,’ whereby deals that were previously kept in place as a thank you to early subscribers, will no longer be available. The decision about whether to stay at the same price point or upgrade to the more expensive tier will be given to all affected members though.
“Impacted members will be clearly notified by email and within the service, so that they have time to decide which plan/price point works best for them,” Netflix said in a statement (via the Telegraph).
Netflix’s subscriber count currently sits at around 75 million worldwide, making it the most popular, paid-for streaming service in the world.

Netflix learns how to do HDR

    Marco Polo gets it first

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and is more familar to gamers than telly watchers. Now Netflix has announced that it supports this feature and first TV show to offer it is Marco Polo.

You need a late generation 4K TV made after 2015 which supports the feature such as the Sony Android TV 800 series.
HDR videos can display millions of shades, much more than the traditional HD content. From all of the demos that we've seen so far, it is hard to notice any difference as long as you don’t have two identical TV's playing HDR vs. non HDR content side-by-side.
You do need to have the 4K streaming option that usually cost $12 or €12 and lets you see the 4K content or watch Netflix on up to four devices simultaneously.
The content that supports 4K HDR will wear an "Ultra HD Premium" sticker. Ultra high definition 4K Blu-ray discs that are available support HDR content. Marco Polo is first to get it on Netflix and we are sure that there will be more Netflix original TV shows supporting this feature.
It comes down to re-mastering the original 4K content to enable more shaders and brighter contrasts on the 4K content, you don’t have to tape it again. However this still cost some money.
If you are one of the few percent that own a 4K TV with HDR capability and paythe $12 / € 12 Euro extra for Netflix, you should give Marclo Polo's Advantures in Asia a try.

Netflix to Enhance Access for Customers Who Are Blind

Berkeley, CA – April 14, 2016 – In a first-of-its-kind settlement, advocates for people who are blind have reached an agreement with Netflix to make accessible the movies and videos offered through the Netflix video streaming and DVD rental subscriptions. The settlement provides that Netflix will make its video content accessible by adding a new technology called “audio description” as a feature that blind customers can activate so they can more fully understand and enjoy the movie and video experience.
The settlement was reached between Netflix and the American Council of the Blind (ACB). The Massachusetts-based Bay State Council of the Blind (BSCB) and Robert Baran, an individual who is blind, were also parties to the settlement. These blind advocacy organizations and Mr. Baran were represented by Disability Rights Advocates (DRA), a national non-profit legal center.
Netflix provides one of the nation’s most popular online streaming and DVD rental services, offering convenient and affordable video entertainment, including original content, to millions of Americans.
Under the agreement, Netflix will provide audio description for many popular titles in its streaming and disc rental libraries. Audio description technology lets blind people know what is happening in scenes without dialogue or scenes with significant visual elements via an audio description track that contains narration of the visual elements that is synchronized with the show or movie. Television and movie studios will create the audio description tracks and provide them to Netflix. Without audio description, blind individuals do not know what is happening in scenes without dialogue and can misinterpret the meaning of other scenes. Under the settlement, Netflix will also provide audio description for the “Netflix Original” shows that Netflix has begun distributing such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.
Under the agreement, Netflix will also make its website and mobile applications accessible to individuals who are blind and use screen-reading software to navigate websites and apps. Screen-reading software is an interface between people who are blind or low vision and computers and/or mobile applications. The software creates an audio version of text and images that appear on a screen that it reads aloud to a user. The user then controls the computer or mobile device by pressing keys or tapping on a mobile application. With the changes Netflix is making, users who are blind or low vision will be able to independently use the Netflix website and mobile applications.
This agreement is the first-of-its-kind to provide screen-reader and audio access to users who are blind or low vision. These improvements will provide people who are blind or low vision with unparalleled access to online video entertainment services currently enjoyed by millions of Americans. Millions of Americans identify as having a visual disability.
Kim Charlson, President of the American Council of the Blind, commented, “We applaud Netflix for working with us to enhance access to its services for people who are blind. Our goal is to expand the availability of Netflix’s services to the blind community and to increase the availability of audio described film and television programming. Movies and television are a central pillar of American culture. As television and movies are increasingly delivered through streaming and home delivery services, ensuring that the blind community receives access to this content is critical to ensure that people who are blind are integrated into modern society.”
Attorney Rebecca Williford of Disability Rights Advocates explains, “This is a great example of technology promoting greater accessibility and inclusiveness for people with disabilities. We hope that the outcome of our collaboration with Netflix will serve as a model for others in the online video entertainment industry.”
