Windows 10 Is Now Powering 270 Million Active Installations

During Microsoft Build 2016, it was announced that Windows 10 is the fastest growing operating system released by the company ever.

Windows 10 Is Now Powering 270 Million Active Installations

Windows 10 was officially launched eight months ago and the company’s latest desktop operating system is already running on 270 million active installations worldwide. The company was kind enough to reveal this data today, at their annual developer conference BUILD, and according to Microsoft, the platform also has the fastest adoption rate across all versions of Windows. According to the software giant, the Windows app store has received over 5 billion visits, showcasing how popular the platform has become.
Windows 10 was initially released on July 29th 2015 and succeeded the company’s previous operating system, Windows 8.1. So far, the update has received several improvements and also been met with positive response revolving around its performance upgrades. Since this is the only platform that provides support for Microsoft’s DirectX 12 API to be used in the latest gaming titles, it also delivers improvements in the average frames that you will be experiencing in the upcoming video games.

Windows 10 was adopted quickly by users since Microsoft was kind enough to make it a free update for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users, and because of this approach, the platform managed to hit a 50 million install count in just 2 weeks of its release. Additionally, during the month of January, Microsoft added that Windows 10 had outpaced the company’s previous popular operating system, Windows 7.

While the consumer section has grown with an extremely fast pace, it is also the enterprise section that has shown a positive response towards the OS. It is possible that the adoption rate continues to grow on account that Microsoft will continue to roll out updates in the foreseeable future in order to continuously improve upon the user experience.

Windows 10 Mobile Is Insanely Frustrating To Use, Here’s Why

We only hope that the same level of dedication was shown towards Windows 10 Mobile. Do you happen to be using Windows 10 on your desktop and laptop’s operating system? What do you think about it so far? Let us know your thoughts right away.

Windows 10 and Xbox One App Stores to Merge in a Universal Windows Store

Microsoft will be bringing together Windows and Xbox app stores this summer, when it releases the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Once the update is rolled out for free to Windows 10 and Xbox One, the two stores will be combined into one, creating “a single unified store across devices.”

Universal Windows Store for Windows 10 and Xbox One

Since the company started working on supporting and developing Universal Apps, it was only a natural next step to host all of these apps at one place. The goal of this Universal Windows Store will be to support Windows 10 apps, Win32 apps and Xbox apps, all in the same place. Microsoft has long been planning to have apps that run across all its devices, from the desktop to the consoles. The ability to have only a single store for everything Microsoft will be a huge win for the entire platform.
Microsoft’s announcement of a Universal Windows Store doesn’t come as a surprise as we have long expected the company to finally make it available once it has enough repository of universal apps. At Build 2016, Microsoft Xbox chief Phil Spencer made official.

Universal apps will also on the Xbox this summer, alongside the Anniversary Update. Microsoft is trying to make it easy for anyone who wants to develop apps and games. The company will allow Xbox One owners to turn their console into a dev kit, easily switching between the gaming and developing modes. Microsoft also said that it has created a conversion tool that will automatically turn games into cross-platform apps, allowing them to be hosted on the Universal Windows Store.

The new Universal Windows Store will support everything in Windows apps – season passes, bundles and other features, only now they will be across all the devices. The conversion tool will also allow developers to add support for Live Tiles, Xbox One controllers and notifications, no matter what their original platform is.

Microsoft Transforms Retail Xbox One Into A Dev Kit, Adding Mods And Overlay To Windows 10 Gaming

Since January 2015, Microsoft pushed for Xbox integration with Windows 10, and in the following months after the launch of the new OS, we've seen various examples of the marriage of Microsoft's console and PC. This includes the ideas of cross-buy and cross-play titles, the Xbox app on PC, Game DVR and in-game streaming. We also heard about the company's PC gaming plans, specifically with the use of the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) to create games on the Windows Store. At this year's Microsoft Build keynote, the company revealed more details on its two gaming platforms.
    Improving PC Gaming

Xbox head, Phil Spencer, initially talked about the UWP, which is the company's foundation to bring games onto the PC as Universal Windows Apps (UWA). One major example of a game using UWP is Forza Motorsport 6: Apex, which we saw at the Xbox Spring Showcase. The free PC-exclusive game was the Turn 10 Studios' first step into PC gaming, and the development team plans to ship future Forza games on both the Xbox and PC. Other games include Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, the recently launched season 3 of Killer Instinct and the upcoming Quantum Break.
The use of UWP is crucial to developers, but according to Spencer, a UWP-based game can also benefit gamers.
"Through the use of the Universal Windows Platform, our plan is to deliver games that will run better on Windows, with more predictable performance, more robust install, uninstall and servicing capability through a modern application platform, greater safety for users through a protected runtime environment, and distribution of modern desktop applications on any store, including the Windows store, and via any deployment mechanism," Spencer said during his presentation.
However, he also noted that the company is listening to the feedback from PC gamers and adding more features to Windows 10. In May, players will be able to disable VSync, and Microsoft is also adding support for GSync and FreeSync technologies for its UWA games. The company is also working on better performance on full-screen titles as well as a brand new set of features, such as an overlay system and mod support.

Even with various API advancements, some developers still use the classic Win32 coding language to build games. With Windows 10, these games will work on modern desktops, thanks to Microsoft's desktop app converter. Spencer used the HD edition of Age of Empires II to demo the new feature. Specifically, he used the Steam version of the game to show the number of people playing the game at that moment. By running the game through the converter app, you can still have the same experience as if you played the game through Steam. Various mods through the Steam Workshop are available for use through the converter as well, and you can still compete in multiplayer matches.
Spencer also showed the same conversion process with a more recent title: CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. After a few seconds, the game started and quickly loaded a save point. Even though The Witcher 3 on the UWP was just an experiment, Spencer wanted to show that the conversion feature could quickly work on any game on the PC.
"This allows these games to take advantage of the common services and technology in both Xbox and Windows 10. Things like platform-specific features like live tile support and notifications," he said. "We have consistent input support with controller and mouse and keyboard across all of our devices. And distribution in the Windows Store or any other store."
Turning Your Xbox One Into A Dev Kit

As Microsoft Build is, first and foremost, a developer-centric conference, Spencer switched to the Xbox One and how any retail copy of the device can be transformed to a dev kit, which he called "Xbox Dev Mode."
Partner software engineering manager, Ashley Speicher, activated the feature by running the Dev Mode Activation app on the console. Once the console is registered as a "dev console" with a Dev Center account, developers can press a button on the Xbox controller to immediately restart the console in developer mode.
By linking apps, such as Microsoft Visual Studio, to the Xbox, developers can launch various builds of their apps straight to the console. Most of the "heavy lifting," according to Speicher, is done through the UWP, which also allows developers to use the Xbox controllers on the console or PC to navigate through the app as well, integrating other features such as speech recognition to any app.
Dev Mode also includes another app on the Xbox One called Dev Home, which includes various developer settings, account management and the ability to return the Xbox One back to its original retail version. As a final bonus, a Preview version of Dev Mode is available today.
    The Anniversary Update

When the Windows 10 anniversary update comes out this summer, Spencer and the Xbox team will also include their own updates for the console and PC. At the top of the list is a "single, unified store" throughout all Windows devices. Spencer said that this will help developers easily create packages for their games for scenarios such as season passes and pre-order sales.
Windows 10 introduced Cortana to the PC and mobile platforms, but now it's also coming to the Xbox One so you can use the virtual assistant to help you find new games to play. Finally, the Xbox team will also start laying the groundwork for some heavily-requested features from users, one of which was the ability to have background music available while playing a game.
    Tip Of The Iceberg

Obviously, there's more news to come during E3 later this year, but this is just a taste of what's to come from Microsoft's gaming division. As expected, most of these features were targeted towards developers, but Xbox fans could also benefit when creators use these new tools to create new games on the Xbox One and PC.

HoloLens Dev Kits Ship Today, Still $3,000

From the stage at Microsoft Build, HoloLens chief Alex Kipman delivered the news that HoloLens developer kits are shipping today.
The device costs $3,000, and they’re available only to Windows Insiders in the U.S. and Canada (for now). The first wave is heading out today, and Microsoft said that it will continue to offer invites to applicants as more devices are available.
Kipman also announced that an app for HoloLens called Galaxy Explorer is coming to the Windows Store, with code available for free on GitHub. Simply put, Galaxy Explorer lets you virtually explore the Milky Way. You can navigate, “land” on a planet, zoom in or out, and more.
We will certainly hear more about HoloLens throughout the week here at Build, but Kipman teased some improvements. One onstage demo showed Case Western Reserve students--here, in the hall--being taught about anatomy by a professor back at the university. The students, wearing HoloLens HDMs, had a see-through 3D image of the human anatomy in front of them. The professor could see what they were seeing, and he appeared to them as a floating orange head, with a floating orange hand as a pointer. The head did not move...it was a static avatar. (“This feels really natural,” he read robotically from a script.) Still, it was compelling to see people able to remotely collaborate and learn in such a way.

Another experience, called “Destination Mars,” is coming from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), wherein--you guessed it--you get to experience the surface of Mars from the point of view of a Rover. It’s hosted by a virtual Buzz Aldrin (“Hi there, I’m Buzz Aldrin,” he says).
If the price tag of the HoloLens, and the lack of available experiences compared to the Rift and Vive, is throwing you off, don’t give in to the temptation. HoloLens is a totally different beast, not to mention the fact that it’s fundamentally AR, not VR. It’s also, yes, a bit behind the premiere VR HMDs, but Microsoft has bigger plans for HoloLens.

Those plans include rich communications, such as Skype. Microsoft knows that some of its best IP involves communications (Skype, Outlook), and it’s planning to leverage HoloLens technology to make take them to the next level.

    Boa tarde,

    Cumprimentos.

UWP VSYNC Fix Coming in May; Overlay & Modding to Be Eventually Allowed

Today, Head of Xbox Division Phil Spencer made some announcements during Microsoft’s Build Keynote. We’ve already reported that there will be a Universal Store across all Windows devices, but there’s a lot more interesting information for gamers.
Cortana will debut on Xbox One soon, for instance. The gaming community really wanted to know Microsoft’s plans on the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) though, and Spencer delivered the following speech.
Through the Universal Windows Platform, our plan is to deliver games that will run better on Windows with more predictable performance, more robust install/uninstall and servicing capability through a modern application platform and greater safety for users through a protected Runtime environment.
We have heard the feedback from the PC gaming community loud and clear. We’re working to ensure Windows 10 has a great game experience.
    Advertisements

We will be enabling the ability to disable VSYNC and adding support for GSYNC/FreeSync in May. DirectX 12 added support for new mGPU scenarios which work today for both Windows32 and UWP games. We’re committed to ensure that we meet or exceed the performance expectations of full screen games as well as adding additional requested features, including support for overlays, modding and more.
Unfortunately, that means we’ll be stuck with forced VSYNC at Quantum Break’s release, scheduled for April 5 on both Windows 10 and Xbox One. On the upside, it looks like both overlay applications and modding should be eventually available on UWP games.
Spencer then proceeded to showcase a Desktop App converter which can transform any existing game package to a modern desktop application. This has been demonstrated on stage with popular games such as Age of Empires II HD and The Witcher III: Wild Hunt.
Microsoft clearly wants both developers and consumers to embrace their vision for a unified ecosystem. We’ll see in the next months if their gamble will pay off.

    Boa noite,

Tudo vai ser arranjado (em relação ao que se queixavam do V-Sync, do fullscrean, do diabo a quatro). Para calar as bocas dos mais chatos. Depois quero ver qual a desculpa para dizer mal da Microsoft.

    Cumprimentos.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Apps Grab Continues: Win32 And .NET Converter, Xamarin For Mobile, And Bash

Microsoft has made no secret of the fact that it wants Windows 10 to be not just a universal app platform, but the universal app platform. A year after announcing that Windows 10 Universal Apps (UWA) would run on any Windows 10-enabled device and that Projects Islandwood and Astoria would allow devs to easily port iOS and Android apps (respectively) to Windows 10 Mobile, Microsoft reaffirmed its goal with a handful of announcements aimed at making it even easier to get more apps on its platform.
    Mobile By Xamarin

On the mobile side, Microsoft has either cleaned things up or further muddied the water, depending on your point of video.
Project Islandwood (iOS) was renamed “Windows Bridge for iOS,” and the company open sourced it on GitHub last year. Simply put, it allows devs to bring apps using Objective-C into Visual Studio and compile it into a Universal App. Microsoft said it’s been updating it frequently.
Project Astoria (Android) was shelved entirely. Microsoft was a mite cagey as to the reason why, stating in a blog post that, “We received a lot of feedback that having two Bridge technologies to bring code from mobile operating systems to Windows was unnecessary, and the choice between them could be confusing.” This seems an odd reason at best. More likely, the problems with Astoria stemmed from what we learned a year ago, which is that porting Android apps seemed like it would be more problematic than porting iOS apps. Even more likely is that Microsoft obviating Astoria entirely by acquiring Xamarin.
Xamarin seems to provide the IP necessary to solve some of the mobile app porting issues. “Xamarin provides a rich mobile development offering that enables developers to build mobile apps using C# and deliver fully native mobile app experiences to all major devices – including iOS, Android, and Windows,” read a Microsoft blog post. The company said that Xamarin offers .NET and C# as app building tools that will provide a native app experience.
Project Centennial: The Old Is Made New

Microsoft said that there are some 16 million Win32/.NET desktop apps out there, and today the company announced a way for devs to convert those apps into UWA. The converter, dubbed “Project Centennial,” is technically a bridge like the Windows Bridge for iOS.
The tool allows you to convert, deploy and test your app, and then you can add universal Windows platform features from there, including background tasks and app services. Once that’s done, you can fully port your app to Windows 10, where it will ostensibly be able to run on any Windows 10 device.
Microsoft said that “an early iteration” of Centennial is coming soon to a small set of devs, and thereafter it will be expanded to more.
    Bash!

Microsoft built the “Windows Subsystem For Linux” (WSL) that enables native Bash and support for Linux command-line tools. Basically, you can run Bash on Ubuntu on Windows. Canonical was involved in the process as a partner.
“You can now run Bash scripts, Linux command-line tools like sed, awk, grep, and you can even try Linux-first tools like Ruby, Git, Python, etc. directly on Windows. You can also access your Windows filesystem from within Bash allowing you to work on the same set of files using your preferred Windows tools or Linux command-line tools,” read a blog post.
The tool is still in beta, and Microsoft was clear that it’s not designed for building server platforms (it pointed to Azure, Hyper-V and Docker as better options). It also noted that the Bash tool isn’t cross-compatible with Windows tools, meaning, for example, that “you won’t be able to run Notepad from Bash, or run Ruby in Bash from PowerShell.”
The company also noted that it’s worked to improve cmd, PowerShell and other command-line tools.

Microsoft's Edge Browser To Support 'Hello' Biometric Authentication For Websites

At Build, Microsoft announced that “Windows Hello,” its biometric authentication mechanism for Windows 10, will now work with websites, as well. The company’s Edge browser will be the first to support this new standard for biometric web logins, but others should soon follow.
About a year ago, Microsoft announced its “Windows Hello” protocol for biometric authentication, which supports fingerprint, face and iris recognition. Microsoft claimed “enterprise-grade security” for these options, including a False Acceptance Rate (FAR) of 1/100,000 (for Android Marshmallow it’s only 1/50,000), a False Rejection Rate (FRR) of 2-4 percent (10 percent for Android M). Liveness measures for face recognition were included as well to ensure the authentication can’t be spoofed with a photo or a device.
When Microsoft announced Hello last year, it was meant to be the biometric login mechanism only for the device itself, in the same way fingerprints, PINs, or passphrases are already used to unlock the latest iPhones and Android phones. However, Microsoft also created another login mechanism for native apps (and services at a later date) that could utilize the Hello biometrics to create a public key, which would then be recognized by apps and websites that use the Hello APIs. The websites or apps would never be able to see your fingerprint or iris patterns.

This protocol was called Passport then, but it appears that Microsoft may be unifying the two under the “Hello” name to avoid user confusion. Microsoft also said that Passport would be standardized under the FIDO 2.0 specification (likely to be finished later this year), so other browsers can use the same authentication mechanism as well.
The FIDO working group dealing with fleshing out the latest version of the protocol is co-chaired by Microsoft, Google, and Nok Nok Labs (a security company specializing in multi-factor authentication).
If Microsoft wouldn’t have agreed to standardize the protocol, then sometime in the future, developers may have had to choose between the biometric login methods of Microsoft, Google, or Apple, and perhaps other companies’ as well. Facing that choice, web developers may also simply stick to usernames and passwords and reject biometric authentication for their websites.
If all companies agree to a standard, then this will avoid fragmentation in biometric protocols and will also accelerate adoption by web developers. Apple is not yet part of the FIDO Alliance, so we may still see at least two biometric standards for web services (if Apple ever decides to support Touch ID for websites, too).
The new Windows Hello APIs will be included in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which will arrive this summer for free to all Windows 10 users.

Microsoft’s Anniversary Update Coming This Summer

Microsoft announced today that it will be releasing a free update on the one year anniversary of Windows 10. The update will include stuff like Windows Hello, Windows Ink, Cortana updates and developer mode for the Xbox One. The company also took advantage of today's announcement to let the world know that the HoloLens is available as of today.

    Boa noite,

Quer dizer... Primeiro a MS é má.
