iPhone 5 bad battery recall may cost you

    First-hand experience

Back in August Apple called up a number of customers who bought iPhones between September 2012 and January 2013 to get a replacement battery.

The main symptom of this issue which was serious enough to result in a big recall was that users would "suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently." Guess what, we had one of these in our home and we wanted to replace the bad battery.
Apple doesn’t have a store in Vienna, Austria, but it has a premium reseller called Mc Shark that handles any replacements and warranty related issues. We went there to get a new battery, but the Mc Shark RMA employee warned us that Apple might charge us €39.99 and can refuse to replace the battery since the phone was dropped. He claimed that there might be some water related damage or general device damage that would cause them to decline the warranty. Mind you, Apple called customers to get a battery replacement as it messed up and used substandard batteries to begin with. Scratching or dropping a phone has nothing to do with it, it does not change the fact that the device was shipped with a faulty battery.
The €39.99 fee was for the technician’s time that he would take to determine whether or not the RMA would be fulfilled, so we decided to give a replacement a shoot, as our iPhone mentioned could only hold a charge for a few hours at best. Here was our reasoning - even if Apple charges us €39.99 for nothing, we would walk out with a nice story to tell.
The chaps were quick to replace the battery and emailed us a day later and we got the phone with the new battery but we didn’t know if they accepted the warranty or not until we picked up the phone. So in the end we got a phone with new battery, but iTunes didn’t want to get the updates from the day before and decided that data from November 2014 should be restored, causing a lot of unnecessary work.
Just thought we should share this story, as this is not the way how to keep your customer happy. Apple’s scare tactics and charging consumers to fix a phone they messed up are simply not good for business, especially for a premium brand that prides itself on good support.

iPhone 5 Battery Replacement Program Extended to January 2016

A “small number” of iPhone 5 handsets apparently have a battery problem, causing their battery life to become depleted really quickly or for them to expire altogether. Apple initiated a free battery replacement program, in which customers could bring their phones to an Apple Store and have them replaced for free. This was only valid for two years following purchase of the device, and was due to run out in January of this year.
However, the company has decided to extend the program, offering free replacement batteries until January 2016. This could mean two things – the problem is so severe that they need to ensure everyone can take advantage of it, or it could mean that very few people have actually claimed a replacement battery.
To get yours, you need to visit this website and enter your serial number. Only certain devices with certain numbers can get the replacement, but it appears that for many, Apple is playing on the safe side, and you could find yourself getting a new battery even if your battery is just not holding as much charge as it used to (as with any old phone).
If you’ve got one of the affected phones, make a visit to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. They should replace the battery while you wait.

Sketchy Report Suggests A Renamed 4-Inch iPhone 5e With Lower Specs

The 4-inch iPhone has been in the rumor mill for quite some time, being backed by miscellaneous reports from various sources. Previous rumors about Apple’s smaller handset includes the company’s latest A9 chips with twice the RAM than the iPhone 6. However, a new rumor coming from a Chinese website begs to differ. The act of pouring cold water on previous claims has been the major highlight of the report published on Monday. The Chinese website, MyDrivers also claims that the 4-inch iPhone would also have a refreshed name.

We’re Expecting An iPhone 5e With Lower Specs?

The moniker Apple will use to market its device will be ‘iPhone 5e’, which is likely to be an enhanced version of the iPhone 5s. This is an unlikely report, since previous claims have hinted on a device named as the iPhone 6c. In terms of internal specifications, the iPhone 5e is said to boast Apple’s previous generation A8 chip, which is the same processor chip used in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The report further suggests that the iPhone 5e will have 1GB of RAM. Both of these claims are not on par with previous reports and rumors.
Now, the latest news shows, this new machine might be called iPhone 5e (I did not expect), as the letter “e” represents enhanced [referring to] the addition of Apple Pay, NFC and VoLTE Features.
So technically what the Cupertino company is trying to do is to deliver the same internal specifications as the iPod Touch. The unusual device name marks the third in the category after the iPhone 7c, which was a pretty good buy in putting the device alongside the forthcoming iPhone 7 lineup. In contrast to previous reports, MyDrivers has thrown other reports into doubt.

KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo has greater credibility than the current Chinese source. Kuo, back in November stated that the 4-inch iPhone will feature an A9 chip with 2GB of RAM. Moreover, his anticipations also speculated a metal casing instead of the plastic shell found on the previous ‘c’ variant of the smaller handset. However, the credibility of the sources depends upon the actual release of the smartphone.
Nonetheless, one common aspect that all reports share is the fact that a refreshed, smaller variant of the iPhone is expected. The launch date of the iPhone 5c or 5e is not yet confirmed, but judging by the reports, it seems that the company might soon reveal the smaller iPhone in a planned Apple Watch 2 event.
This is it for now, folks. What do you guys think about this Chinese report? Share your thoughts on the matter.
