    Steam Os

SteamOS on a Sub-$400 Gaming System

SteamOS on a Sub-$400 Gaming System

Earlier in the week we showed off the parts we are going to use for a dedicated gaming machine using the SteamOS. The goal of the system was to build a gaming rig that would be comparable to the cost of the current generation of console systems. Since both the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One retail for $400.00, that’s what the budget for this gaming system was set at. Today we are going to take a look at the SteamOS and see what it’s all about! Let’s do a quick recap of the hardware we are using for our SteamOS build.

The components that were chosen for the build aren’t the fastest in the world by any means, but they should give a pretty solid system for the price! In order to help keep the cost of the build down, I opted to rock the Intel Pentium G3258 dual core processor. For only $69.99 the G3258 was really able to impress me when it comes to gaming when paired with a solid graphics card. The graphics card was going to be key in this build, but having a limited budget I couldn’t go with something like the latest GeForce GTX980, but I needed enough horse power for the job without blowing the budget out of the water, I opted for a GIGABYTE GeForce GTX750OC 2GB graphics card. The GIGABYTE GeForce GTX750OC can be found for as little as $94.99 after a $15.00 rebate and while we haven’t looked at this particular GTX 750, others have proven themselves as a solid little card.

    SteamOS on a Sub-$400 Gaming System - Parte 2

    SteamOS Benchmark Performance

Heaven Benchmark with its current version 4.0 is a GPU-intensive benchmark that hammers graphics cards to the limits. This powerful tool can be effectively used to determine the stability of a GPU under extremely stressful conditions, as well as check the cooling system’s potential under maximum heat output. It provides completely unbiased results and generates true in-game rendering workloads across all platforms, such as Windows, Linux and Mac OS X

The Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0 has two different presets availble, basic and extreme. Since this is a whole new platform, I’m going to run of the presets. I will start with the basic preset. The basic preset has the quality set to medium, Tessellation is disabled, Anti-aliasing is set to x2, and the benchmark is running at a resolution of 1280×720.

    Steambox - Parte 3

Installing Windows 8.1 and General System Performance

Last week we took some time and built a sub-$400 system that was to be dedicated to gaming with the SteamOS, a Steambox if you will. Later in the week, we took a look at the SteamOS, what it takes to install it, and a look at some of the capabilities of the SteamOS. While the SteamOS has some potential for gaming, there are just a number of things holding it back at this point. The two biggest issues I see the SteamOS facing right now are lack of games support, and the lack of additional features. The complete steam library consists of over 9000 game titles which is quite a few games, the SteamOS & Linux however, support only 1495 games at this point. Unfortunately, many of the games that aren’t supported are the more popular series like Call of Duty (love it or hate, it’s a popular series).
I was also disparaged by the lack of features in SteamOS, I wasn’t able to stream videos from Netflix or my cable provider. Nor does it look like there is a simple way to watch Blurays on Linux So I wouldn’t be able to use the Steambox as a HTPC, since I wouldn’t be gaming 24/7 I was hoping for a little bit more functionality from it.
The hardware that I used for the Steambox looks pretty solid per the specifications, but there is limited testing that I can do in the SteamOS and Linux. I was able to run the Unigine Heaven 4.0 benchmark in the SteamOS article here, but that was about it. So to test the hardware I’m going to toss on a Windows 8 install and run the system through an array of gaming benchmarks.

New Steam controller mockup revealed in client update

Valve’s Steam controller has gone through several changes since its reveal last year and it looks like the company hasn’t quite settled on a final design just yet as a brand new mockup was found in the latest Steam beta client update. While the track pads still remain, the left side has a new directional guide indicator.
The right trackpad remains the same, the XYAB buttons are all still in place and the new analog stick is still there from the last re-design, which was revealed back in July.

The controller has gone through many changes and is almost unrecognizable in comparison to Valve’s original vision, which featured a touch screen in the middle, odd XYAB button placement and no analog stick.

It is clear that Valve won’t be releasing its controller until it is perfect, originally it was planned to launch this year alongside the Steam Machines and Steam OS, but the new initiative has been delayed until next year.

Valve updates the Steam Controller, adds a directional pad

Valve is constantly tinkering with its still unreleased Steam Controller, but the latest design shown off sports a directional pad. This is joined by traditional face buttons, and an analog thumbstick.

The new image, something that was found by Game Informer in the latest Steam Client beta, shows off a d-pad on the new Steam Controller. The directional pad replaces the left-side haptic touchpad, but unfortunately this isn't the final design so we don't know if we'll receive a d-pad on the Steam Controller when it's released next year. Boo.

Valve's Steam Controller may finally, finally be ready

Valve first announced their Steam Controller in September of 2013, with two touchpads, a centered touchscreen and a few extra buttons around the strange design. It's now early 2015, and the controller still hasn't been released, despite undergoing several publicly reported redesigns.
New information as reported by GameSpot reveals that the Steam Controller may finally be ready for release. It seems that the final revision of the controller, leaked in December and seen above, may be good enough to use with a range of living room PCs and PC games, and won't need any further tweaking.
The info comes straight from the mouth of Origin PC CEO Kevin Wasielewski at CES 2015, who claimed that Valve will have more to reveal at GDC 2015 in March. He also said that the term "Steam Machine" is basically meaningless these days, with "living room PC" most accurately reflecting what these systems are designed for.
The latest iteration of the Steam Controller appears to include some sort of directional pad (potentially touch-bassed) alongside an analog stick, selection of faceplate buttons and a touchpad. There's also the standard trigger buttons, making this controller a hybrid of the original Steam Controller design and more traditional game console controllers.
So far, Valve hasn't officially announced any release date, pricing or final design for the Steam Controller. The Steam Machines program also remains in limbo, while their Linux-based SteamOS is still in beta.

Aspyr bets the farm on SteamOS success

Aspyr Media has revealed that it is betting its future on the success of Valve's SteamOS project, and that despite the tiny minority of machines running Linux is already approaching a break-even point.

The Texas-based Apsyr, founded in 1996, has carved a niche for itself porting other companies' games to platforms including OS X, Linux and - for console-led titles - Windows. While the majority of its income comes from its majority share of the OS X gaming market, senior product and sales manager Michael Blair has revealed that its growing Linux work is a major focus for the company and that it is approaching the point where it pays for itself - after which, the theory goes, will follow profits.

'We are close to breaking even,' Blair explained in response to a Reddit thread querying the company's financial health, 'which is a HUGE win in our eyes!' Blair went on to explain that Valve's Steam Machine console and SteamOS Linux-based gaming operating systems are key to Aspyr's future. 'As many of you have guessed, we are making a long bet here with Steam Machines. And yes, if it weren't for Valve we wouldn't be doing it because we knew in the current market, break even was the best we could do (which is exactly why adoption has been scarce for Linux).

'What Valve is doing is creating a platform,
' Blair explained. 'Sure it will be a small one, but Aspyr has been the experts at small platform development for over 17 years. We are really good at it, and we will be really good at Linux in time.

'Keep being the amazing community you guys already are,
' Blair told the Linux sub-Reddit users in general when asked how they can support the company's efforts. 'Buy on Linux and ONLY Linux. Wait for the Linux version if you can. Buy directly from us if you can. Help us understand the wild west of distros, and be understanding when we can't possibly support all the permutations. More importantly, root for Valve and Steam Machines even if you know as a core Linux user you will likely stay open source with your rigs and distros. Its the ONLY way Linux gaming will move forward.'

Aspyr's recent work includes the Linux ports of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, along with Civilization V and Civilization Beyond Earth.

SteamBox – Building Your Own HTPC Gaming System

    Introduction

There has been a lot of talk in the last year about SteamBox, but at the end of 2014, very little, if anything was shown that really brought this into the hands of consumers. There’s a few systems from system integrators such as iBuyPower and CyberPower that are designed “like” a SteamBox, but Valve have yet to put their official units to market.
Now let’s not get carried away, because chances are that you’re reading this article from a PC, or that you at least own a PC. If you own a PC, congratulations! You own a SteamBox. All SteamBox is, is some clever marketing for a gaming PC, the main difference being the operating system. Valve have been working on their own version of Linux that essentially boots to Steam instead of a normal desktop, much in the same way an Xbox One boots to a dashboard rather than Windows; this is something you can achieve yourself.
I want to game on the big screen!
If you’re eager to break away from your desk and start gaming in the living room, or any other room of the house for that matter, then you’ve likely been enticed by the SteamBox concept. The HTPC gaming system market is booming right now and while there are great systems out there, it can be great fun building your own.
You’ll need to pick the right hardware for your budget, while also trying to balance things such as system heat and acoustics; this rig is going to be in your living room after all. Fortunately, we’ve already tested a bunch of chassis’ for this very task, which you can check out here in our Best Chassis For Steambox feature. Today, let’s see if we can get plenty of bang for our buck with a budget of around £800.
