Gamescom 2015: Xbox One’s Quantum Break Gets a Release Date – New Screenshots and Gameplay Demo Released

Microsoft is rocking the showfloor right now at Gamescom 2015 which is currently underway in Cologne, Germany. The publisher has a lot to show in its 90-minute long briefing, and one of the games that everyone has been desperately waiting to see in action is finally on stage. Quantum Break, one of the most anticipated upcoming Xbox One exclusive game, finally has a release date. Microsoft has announced that the third-person shooter action game will be out next year on April 5.

Beautiful Quantum Break Gameplay Demo and Live-Action Trailer Released Along with Breathtaking Screenshots – Due to Hit Xbox One on April 5, 2016

First revealed with a teaser trailer during the Xbox One reveal event back in May 2013, the next major title from the creators of Alan Wake and Max Payne has attracted a lot of attention since its announcements. The title was originally contemplated as a hybrid video game and uncondensed TV series. However, after fans reacted to the company’s adverse policies with the new console, Microsoft altered their strategy and the focus on television was dropped; but not in entirety.
The changes in strategy made gamers speculate that Quantum Break will meet big changes now if it is to be released for the new console, but creative director Sam Lake later revealed that the title is still not just a game alone, as its gaming sections will be blended with a live-action TV show aspect. The live-action part of the game remains in development despite the Xbox Entertainment Studios being shut down last year. The game will take players through the story of heroes while the show will put on a story about the villians.
The time-twisting action game was previously expected to land in the marker in 2015, but the release was later shifted to 2016 to clear some room for other triple A Xbox One-exclusive video games including Halo 5: Guardians and Forza Motorsport. Not much has been revealed about the game in terms of visual content and in-game details since the game’s debut. However, today at its Gamescom 2015 briefing, Microsoft presented a breathtaking gameplay demo of the game along with a live-action trailer from the TV show. You can check them both out below.

Following the release date announcement, the developer behind the game, Remedy Entertainment, also released box art and a brand new batch of screenshots showcasing both the game and the TV series. You can check out the main protagonist and jawdropping in-game visuals and texture detail in the screenshots shared in the gallery below.

Quantum Break’s Graphics Evolution Showcases a “Rarity of the Times”, a Visual Upgrade

YouTuber frost Danger has released a video demonstrating the evolution of Quantum Break since its 2013 reveal to its last seen form as seen at Microsoft’s Gamescom presentation on August 4, 2015.

You can watch the video comparison below:

Quantum Break was ine of the cmost impressive console exclusives since its reveal and it has gotten even better

Quantum Break was certainly one of the most impressive console exclusive titles when it was first revealed back in 2013, and it seems to have only gotten even more impressive since. Despite the addition of well-known actors like X-Men’s Shawn Ashmore and Game of Throne’s Aidan Gillen, several visual details appear in more effective ways.
Quantum Break’s visual upgrade serves as a testament to how a dedicated exclusive development environment can result in both better results and an actual upgrade of graphical quality with time, in contrast to the typical downgrade trend that seems to be plaguing other popular titles.
When time breaks, catastrophe becomes your playground. As hero Jack Joyce, you’ll fight your way through epic disasters that stutter back and forth in time. But surviving this unstable world–and halting the end of time itself–is only possible by mastering your new time powers.

Quantum Break will be available exclusively on the Xbox One on April 5, 2016. We will bring you any new information as soon as it becomes available.

Rendering Techniques of Quantum Break, Horizon & Dreams To Be Showcased At SIGGRAPH 2015

Gamescom 2015 might be ending, but other conventions are due to start soon. SIGGRAPH 2015 will open tomorrow in Los Angeles, for example, and although it’s an event mainly geared towards developers there are some interesting things for gamers, too.
The Advances in Real-Time Rendering in Games course will host many developers working on high-profile games, such as Quantum Break, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Dreams.
Andrew Schneider, Principal FX Artist at Guerrilla Games, will present a session on The Real-time Volumetric Cloudscapes of Horizon: Zero Dawn. Here’s an abstract with more details:
Real-time volumetric clouds in games usually pay for fast performance with a reduction in quality. The most successful approaches are limited to low altitude fluffy and translucent stratus-type clouds. For Horizon: Zero Dawn, Guerrilla need a solution that can fill a sky with evolving and realistic results that closely match highly detailed reference images which represent high altitude cirrus clouds and all of the major low level cloud types, including thick billowy cumulus clouds. These clouds need to light correctly according to the time of day and other cloud-specific lighting effects. Additionally, we are targeting GPU performance of 2ms. Our solution is a volumetric cloud shader which handles the aspects of modeling, animation and lighting logically without sacrificing quality or draw time. Special emphasis will be placed on our solutions for direct-ability of cloud shapes and formations as well as on our lighting model and optimizations.
Ari Silvennoinen and Ville Timonen, Graphics Programmer at Remedy, will demonstrate Multi-Scale Global Illumination in Quantum Break.

This talk will cover Remedy’s approach to multiscale global illumination in Quantum Break. Firstly, we present an efficient voxel tree structure and demonstrate its applications to world-space global illumination and to automatic specular probe generation using local visibility analysis. Secondly, to complement the large-scale illumination, we present our screen-space lighting solution which handles small scale ambient occlusion, reflections, and indirect lighting.
Alex Evans, Co-Founder and Technical Director at Media Molecule, will focus on the history of Dreams’ renderer in his Learning from Failure: a Survey of Promising, Unconventional and
Mostly Abandoned Renderers for ‘Dreams PS4’, a Geometrically Dense, Painterly UGC Game’ session.
Over the last 4 years, MediaMolecule has been hard at work to evolve its brand of ‘creative gaming’. Dreams has a unique rendering engine that runs almost entirely on the PS4’s compute unit (no triangles!); it builds on scenes described through Operationally Transformed CSG trees, which are evaluated on-the-fly to high resolution signed distance fields, from which we generate dense multi-resolution point clouds. In this talk we will cover our process of exploring new techniques, and the interesting failures that resulted. The hope is that they provide inspiration to the audience to pursue unusual techniques for real-time image formation. We will chart a series of different algorithms we wrote to try to render ‘Dreams’, even as its look and art direction evolved. The talk will also cover the renderer we finally settled on, motivated as much by aesthetic choices as technical ones, and discuss some of the current choices we are still exploring for lighting, anti-aliasing and optimization.
None of these sessions will be livestreamed, but you can expect the powerpoint slides to be eventually uploaded to the site; we’ll report a news once that happens, as there may well be some nice insight to share about the technology behind these games.

Quantum Break and other Xbox One exclusives not coming to PC

Some of the best games coming out in the next few months are going to be exclusive to the Xbox One, but with Microsoft behind the Xbox One, some gamers hope that these titles would transition over to the PC. Unfortunately, they won't be - at least for the foreseeable future.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has talked about it, where he said that these games might reach the PC, but we should expect them to be exclusive to the Xbox One. Spencer said: "In the case of things like Scalebound or Crackdown or Quantum Break, you know, just to be completely honest with you, we started those games before we really looked at expanding into Windows in the way that I wanted to bring as part of becoming head of Xbox".

He added: "Going to those teams mid-cycle and saying: 'Hey, by the way, I want to add a platform,' didn't really feel like necessarily the best way to end up with the best result for the game. They had a path that they were on. It's not to say those games could never come to Windows, but right now we're on the path to finish the great games that they've started, and I want that to be the case. These games are on a path, whereas with, like, Halo Wars 2 I had the opportunity from the beginning, when we're sitting down with the studio, to say, 'Here's the target. Here's what we wanna go do".

Is Quantum Break Running At 720P On Xbox One?

Update: page 128 out of 164 clarifies that the final output is indeed at 1080P. We apologize, though that slipped out while reading the massive PDF document.

We have reported a couple of weeks ago about some interesting SIGGRAPH 2015 presentations. At long last, the slides have finally been uploaded on the Web and they make for a good read on multiple accounts.

For instance, Remedy Entertainment had a huge presentation on their approach to multi-scale Global Illumination in Quantum Break. However, from the slides it seems like the game could be running at a 720P frame buffer.

However, it should be noted that some effects such as Screen-Space Reflections and Screen-Space Ambient Occlusion could very well be running at a lower resolution than the actual screen resolution. Moreover, even if that was the case there is still ample time for Remedy Entertainment to increase it, since Quantum Break is due on April 5, 2016 as an Xbox One exclusive.
Still, would you be disappointed if Quantum Break didn’t run at 1080P? Let us know in the comments.

Quantum Break Dev Says Final Game Will Be A Real Challenge, Will Feature Lots Of Exploration

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Remedy Entertainment. The Finnish team is probably very busy with Quantum Break’s development as we have now entered the final six months before launch.

However, a few hours ago Thomas Puha (Head of Media & Partners at Remedy) took some time to address a few lingering concerns about Quantum Break, such as the apparent low difficulty: rest assured that it will not be the case for the final version.
    Hi,
we get a lot of feedback that it seems Jack is completely overpowered compared to the enemies. I can understand why the trailers give you that impression. In the Gamescom15 demo (that we have not released online) the enemies are rather static for the simple fact that AI of those enemy types was not very ready at that point. I think it would go without saying that the final game will offer a real challenge.
There are a variety of Monarch enemy types you come up against. Some of them like the Strikers (and the Juggernaut you saw in the bridge sequence) have experimental Chronon technology, which levels the playing field as it allows them to warp around as Jack does, and they really do now so, it’s nowhere near as easy to kill them.
The player’s Time Powers have got cooldowns, which in demos were not in place, so of course in the final game, you cannot be Time Stopping all the enemies all the time. Don’t worry.

Puha also assured Quantum Break fans that there will be exploration in the final game, it just had been cut for the purpose of the demo.
Also, some people have commented how there is so much going on during action, all the VXF and such…of course that’s not the entire game. There is a lot of just exploring, talking to NPC’s and being immersed in the world, we cut out the exploration bit since we only had 5 minutes of stage time. Rest assured, we got a great balance of action, adventure and time breaking down craziness.
Finally, he provided a brief comment on whether the rewind/fast forward effect has a purpose or is just a gimmick.
So you are fighting to stop the end of time in the game. So time is breaking down and crazy shit happens…so no, you do not control that.
It’s “broken timelines caught in violent loops”.
Quantum Break will be released exclusively for Xbox One on April 5, 2016.

New Quantum Break Gameplay From Game Informer Coverage Trailer

Game Informer has released a coverage trailer for their December Issue, showcasing new Quantum Break gameplay footage.

Yesterday, gaming magazine and website Game Informer revealed their Quantum Break cover for their December issue. Alongside the reveal, the Game Informer released a new trailer that shows off new gameplay for the upcoming Quantum Break.
The trailer can be watched below:

Remedy has a history of creating story-focused action games that play with television’s storytelling format. With Quantum Break, the studio has gone all out, creating a professional-quality, live-action show that will be bundled with the game. The process hasn’t been easy, but for a studio looking to rewrite the rules of video game storytelling, Remedy wasn’t expecting anything less. Since the game’s announcement in 2013, we’ve seen bits and pieces about the game and its show, but in this issue of Game Informer we finally explain how both pieces fit together and break down exactly what players can expect from the final product.
The time bending Xbox One exclusive was announced during Microsoft’s Xbox One reveal event in 2013, and is being developed by Remedy Entertainment. Remedy is of course known for titles as Max Payne and Alan Wake.

During Gamescom 2015, Remedy released a new demo which detailed some of the game’s time manipulation abilities. For those who haven’t seen this demo, check it out below.

At the Siggraph 2015 event, Remedy held a presentation in which the Finnish developer revealed that they were aiming for a final resolution and framerate of 1080P and 30FPS.
Back in April of this year, Microsoft and Remedy Entertainment delayed the game into 2016. Remedy’s creative director Sam Lake stated:
We thank our fans for their patience, and want them to know that the team is taking advantage of this opportunity to polish and fine tune the game to create the kind of standout entertainment experience they’ve come to expect from us.
The Xbox One exclusive is now scheduled for a release on April 5th, 2016.

Quantum Break ‘Shivering’ End Scene Locked Down By Remedy; Important For Rest Of Scenes

According Remedy’s drama director Stobe Harju, the team has locked down the “shivering” end scene of Quantum Break, which is important to the rest of the scenes.

Although Quantum Break on Xbox One won’t be released until April 2016, seeing how the game’s ending will roll out, is important in the development process of the game. According the drama director, the ending scene of the game made him “shiver”. Knowing how the game will end is important for the other scenes in the game.

    Stobe Harju @StobeHarju
Locked the end scene of @quantumbreak @remedygames. Not just the scene making me shiver, but late hours and the fact that i love this shit.

    Aernout @A3rnout
@StobeHarju Hi Stobe, did you mean filming/shooting for QuantumBreak has been finished up? No more recordings then?

    Follow
    Stobe Harju @StobeHarju

@A3rnout What I meant was that we basically can see how the ending is going to roll out among other scenes and that's important. That's all.

With Stobe’s tweets, he’s probably referring to Quantum Break’s interactive TV show, which is connected to the game in, such as way that the digital episodes from the show, will interact with the game based the choices the player make in the show. During Gamescom 2015, Remedy showed off a new demo for the game and explained how the TV-show is integrated in the game. According the Finish developer, “The game is about the heroes and the show is about the villains”. You can check out the Gamescom demo down below.

    Quantum Break skippable TV-Show

With Quantum Break, Remedy is merging a game and TV show together to create a “revolutionary entertainment experience.”
Quantum Break’s interactive TV-show is said to consist of 4 episodes, with a run time of around 22 minutes each. Remedy has confirmed that the episodes from the TV-show are skippable, but by doing so, the player will miss out on the game’s story.

Xbox One exclusive Quantum Break was first scheduled for a release in 2014, but has been delayed multiple times. According publisher Microsoft the game was recently delayed due to a clash with other Xbox One exclusives releasing late 2015. Remedy’s Sam Lake, has assured fans that the extra development time on the game, will be used to further “polish” the game.
Quantum Break is now set for a release on April 5, 2016.

A few days ago, Quantum Break’s drama director Stobe Harju, took to twitter to share his enthusiasm on locking down the ending scene from the game. According Harju, it’s a ‘shivering’ ending for Quantum Break.
Quantum Break was first scheduled for a release in 2014, but has been delayed multiple times.

Quantum Break Consists Of 5 Acts; Choices & Playstyle Affect Duration And Replay Value

Remedy’s upcoming Xbox One game Quantum Break will consist of 5 acts, connected through 4 subbed and dubbed action TV-episodes, that are unlocked after each game act. The duration of each act depends on gameplay style, and the choices the player makes.

Developer Remedy Entertainment confirmed this on Twitter overnight. The developer was asked whether the interactive TV-episodes were skippable and if this would hurt the game’s re-playability.
According to Remedy, Quantum Break will feature 5 game acts, and after each act, the player unlocks a 22 minute TV-episode. These are skippable, but Remedy recommends to watch them.

Quantum Break CE “Very Unlikely” Says Remedy; Game’s Score “Very Different” & “Modern”

A collector’s edition for Remedy’s Quantum Break is “very unlikely”, says Remedy’s head of PR, Thomas Puha. The PR Head also had something to share about the game’s score, which will be “very different” and “modern”, according Puha.

We already got a preview of the game’s score during Quantum Break’s latest trailer, which was shown off during The Game Awards last week. The game’s music is composed by Petri Alanko, who also composed the soundtrack for Remedy’s Alan Wake on the Xbox 360 and PC.
Game soundtracks are as important as movie soundtracks nowadays, and although it remains a matter of taste, Quantum Break´s score will be “very different” according Thomas Puha.
