Quantum Break requires 44GB of HDD space on the Xbox One

The gaming community has been pretty excited over the news of Quantum Break being released on the PC, and not being an exclusive to the Xbox One. It'll require Windows 10 and be powered by DirectX 12, with Remedy Entertainment announcing that Quantum Break has recently gone gold - meaning it's ready for its mass production in physical form.

Quantum Break can now be pre-loaded on the Xbox One, with the game's page on the Xbox Store noting: "You may pre-download this game, but it will not be playable until 12:01 AM EST on the release date". As for the size, it was revealed on the Quantum Break page on the Xbox Store, listed as 44.09GB. The PC version of Quantum Break, which will be exclusive to the Windows Store and not making it over to Steam, should be the same 44GB or so.

Keep in mind that if you buy Quantum Break on the Xbox One, you'll be pre-order bonuses of Alan Wake's American Nightmare, the Xbox 360 game that's playable on the Xbox One. You'll also receive a 'Free Quantum Break Windows 10 game' that will be included with the pre-order for the Xbox One digital version.

Quantum Break drops on April 5 for both the Xbox One and PC.

Quantum Break PC Up On Windows Store; Requires Approx. 36GB HDD Space

Quantum Break PC is now up on Microsoft’s Windows Store, and the time-bending action title requires approximately 36GB of free hard drive space.

Two weeks ago, Microsoft and Remedy Entertainment announced that Quantum Break would also be releasing for PC. The game has been built for Windows 10, and will be the first DirectX12 (DX12) only title released so far. Alongside the game’s PC announcement, Microsoft and Remedy also revealed the game’s system requirements, which can be found here.
Quantum Break will be releasing simultaneously on Xbox One and PC on April 5th, and Microsoft has now put up the title on the Windows Store.

The Quantum Break experience is part game, part live action show—where decisions in one dramatically affect the other. You are Jack Joyce, fighting the nefarious Monarch corporation to stop the end of time. Epic moments of destruction, frozen in chaotic “time stutters,” become playgrounds for intense combat. With a star-studded cast of actors from X-Men, Game of Thrones, The Wire and more, Quantum Break’s time-amplified story is a new and unique entertainment experience.
FEATURES: • In-depth, fast-paced narrative experience crafted by Remedy Entertainment • Top quality live action show that is directly impacted by choices made in-game • Stellar cast of actors • One story told many ways • Time-amplified action gameplay • Navigate epic scenes of destruction as they skip and rewind in broken time
Quantum Break PC has gone gold a few weeks ago

For those interested in the game’s file size on PC – the action game from Remedy requires approximately 36GB of free hard drive space. In contrast, the Xbox One version has been listed with a file size of 44.09GB.
Two weeks ago, Remedy’s creative director, Sam Lake, announced that Quantum Break has gone ‘gold’. The gold status implies that development on the game has been finished, and that it is being made ready for packaging and shipment to retailers.

Time Is A Battlefield: Hands-On With 'Quantum Break'

Nearly three years since its initial reveal at E3, Quantum Break is finally close to launch on April 5, 2016. With a little more than a month to go, we were finally able to play the first act of the game to get a sampling of Remedy’s latest title.
    Story Time

From the very beginning, Quantum Break places a big emphasis on its narrative. You play as Jack Joyce, who is summoned by his friend Paul Serene to help test a time machine. However, events turn for the worse as Jack’s brother, William (who is the main scientist in charge of the machine) interrupts the test because he believes that the device could produce catastrophic results.
As the story unfolds, we find out that Serene traveled far back in time to gain control of the device in the present day, and he eventually kills William. Now, it’s up to Jack to use his newfound powers (after exposure to the time machine) to avenge his brother’s death and kill Serene.

    Laying The Scene

For some, the first half hour of the game can be quite slow. You’re forced to work through certain areas as you listen to the characters engage in conversation. Various locations also hold collectible items, which help with additional story details and should provide more insight into each character.
Once the time machine explodes, and Jack gets his new powers, the action begins to escalate. As Jack and William escape the time machine lab and evade the evil Monarch Corporation, Jack begins to discover his new powers, such as the ability to trap an enemy in a time bubble, or he can quickly dodge incoming shots and avoid damage. Jack can even raise a time shield around him, which stops projectiles in their path. Obviously, these powers have cooldown timers, so you’ll have to use each ability wisely as you take out multiple enemies.
In addition to his powers, Jack can also hide behind cover and use an array of weapons to shoot his way through a room full of enemies. These scenarios are bursts of excitement as you combine bullets and powers to force your way through foes. You can even use certain powers one after another to deal even more damage. Jack’s powers make for some intense actions scenes, and it’s interesting to see how you can use each ability to easily tear apart the Monarch forces that stand in your way.

"Quantum Break" At Xbox Spring Showcase, Part 2
    Decisions, Decisions

At various points throughout the game, you’ll be able to control Serene as he makes crucial decisions that will affect Jack’s progress in the story. You can make Serene’s actions more aggressive with the “Hardline” choice, or you can choose the calm and calculated approach, also known as “P.R.” Before making a choice, you can see how each decision will play out over the next few chapters, which can help you choose between the two options.
To top it all off, the game also includes some live-action elements to advance the story. It’s strange that the game would switch from in-game graphics to a live-action shot, so I’m not sure why it’s in the game. Most of these scenes could have been rendered as an in-game cutscene, but it seems that Remedy wants to flex its storytelling muscles by providing various methods to show the ongoing plot.
    Tick, Tock

The idea of time travel is bound to make most science fiction fans curious about the game, and Jack’s unique powers combined with guns could provide for some exciting enemy encounters. There’s so much more to uncover in the final game, but for now, it seems that Quantum Break has the potential to be an interesting title.

Quantum Break PC Focusing Even More on IQ Than XB1 With Improved VFX, Shadows & Volumetic Lighting

Microsoft unleashed a barrage of news on gamers yesterday, when the embargo for the press event in San Francisco expired.
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is out now for PC, even with all its issues; Killer Instinct Season 3 is coming to PC and Xbox One on March 29; Forza 6 Apex will launch this Spring on PC.
However, the crown jewel of Microsoft’s games line-up is still Quantum Break, due on April 5 for PC (Windows 10) and Xbox One. During the event, GamerTag Radio was able to record an interview with Remedy’s Production Director Miloš Jeřábek, who revealed the first details of Quantum Break’s PC version.
Apparently, we can expect a strong focus on greater image quality and lots of graphics settings to tweak.
The Windows 10 version is trying to use all the power from the PC machines. It will focus on the image quality even more than Xbox One, we’re implementing 4K resolution, 60FPS, we are working on really cool graphical settings that will bump up the VFX, the shadow quality and the quality of volumetric lighting.
    Advertisements
Let’s just hope that Microsoft manages to add SLI/CrossFire support to its Universal Windows App environment before the release of Quantum Break, otherwise running the game at 4K resolution/60FPS and maximum settings will remain just a pipe dream.
As for the game itself, Jeřábek explained the critical role played by the protagonist’s time powers from a gameplay design standpoint.
When we started we wanted to change the gameplay a bit, to not become a shooter, and that’s exactly why we came up with the time powers. The time powers are forcing players to be on the move instead of just hiding behind the cover and staying there. The enemies are flushing you out, they’re always actively trying to take you out of the cover and you have to use the time powers to actually be able to defend. If you wouldn’t use the time powers, you would get killed quite quickly.
If you’re planning to purchase the game on Windows 10, don’t forget the check the official system requirements first. Also, here’s some brand new footage from Kinda Funny Games.

Quantum Break on PC requires internet to stream video segments

If you play Quantum Break on PC, you'll need a persistent internet connection to stream the game's live-action cutscenes. Xbox One players, on the other hand, get the option to download the videos.

Remedy Entertainment revealed that Quantum Break's cutscene segments won't be included on-disc, meaning the game could potentially be a nightmare for gamers with slow connections. Quantum Break is separated into four different acts, and as you beat each section, a live-action video segment will play depending on the actions and choices you made. Remedy says that they chose to stream the video remotely in order to cut down on hard drive and disc space, affirming that the live-action video segments will have a ton of different outcomes and permutations based on player's decisions.

"We have 40 different variations of the show in total where basically your choices get to make it evolve and change whether it's from a junction choice or we have these things called 'Quantum Ripples' which essentially unlocked sort of deleted scenes from the show," Quantum Break narrative designer Greg Louden told Game Informer.

Louden confirmed that both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC will be able to stream the videos remotely, but only Xbox One will be able to download them for offline play. PC players will need an online connection in order to access the footage, which will be offered in 4K.

We're still not sure if PC players will need to be always online while playing Quantum Break or not, or if you just need to be connected right before the video content starts playing.

Also, we don't know what happens if you play offline and beat an act--perhaps the game will just skip the video? I'm thinking that Remedy will just require online for the game just so players don't miss out on half of the story arc, especially given how reliant the game is on the show elements.

We've reached out to Remedy but have yet to hear back.

Hopefully, Microsoft and Remedy will take the less obtrusive route as this kind of always-online requirement will be seen as a kind of active DRM, and Games for Windows Live still leaves a bad taste in the collective mouth of PC gaming. If they drop the ball on Quantum Break, it could irreparably damage Microsoft's new push into Windows 10 gaming.

Like the other games on the Windows Store, Quantum Break probably won't support SLI and Crossfire, which will be a huge let down for enthusiasts. Based on the game's high minimum specs it definitely looks like its tailored towards hardcore PC gamers.

Remember that Quantum Break is a Windows 10-only PC game, and it'll be exclusive to the Windows Store when it releases on April 5.

Quantum Break will try to 'use all the power from the PC'

Microsoft has gone crazy on gaming news in the last few days, with the near silent launch of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition - which is just so broken right now, as well as Killer Instinct Season 3 coming to the PC on March 29, and Forza 6 Apex launching on the PC this spring.

Well, during the press event in San Francisco, Remedy Entertainment's Production Director, Miloš Jeřábek teased some of the first details on the PC version of Quantum Break. He said: "The Windows 10 version is trying to use all the power from the PC machines. It will focus on the image quality even more than Xbox One, we're implementing 4K resolution, 60FPS, we are working on really cool graphical settings that will bump up the VFX, the shadow quality and the quality of volumetric lighting".

I'm scared that we will see Quantum Break not support multi-GPU setups because it will be an exclusive to the Windows Store, with Windows Store-based games not supporting SLI and Crossfire. Microsoft, get off your ass and fix that now, admit your mistakes (and make it very vocal) and never do it again, then - and only then, launch Quantum Break.

Remedy Has No DLC Plans but Plenty of Ideas for the Future of Quantum Break

In this gaming age, whenever a game approaches its launch date we inevitably start hearing from publishers about future DLC, Season Pass and the likes.
It’s only natural that RedBull Games, in one of the many questions posed to Remedy’s Communication Director Thomas Puha, would ask if there will be any DLC for Quantum Break. Apparently there are no such plans, though the Finnish studio certainly has ideas on how to expand the Quantum Break universe in the future.
There are always plenty of ideas discussed in the initial stages of creating a game – way more than humanly possible to fit into one game. That said, we are very happy with what we are shipping, but there have definitely been challenges along the way. We don’t have any DLC plans, but that’s not to say we don’t have plenty of ideas for the future of Quantum Break.
    Advertisements

Microsoft owns the Quantum Break IP, so its future is up to them. The most important thing for Remedy is that we make the game as awesome as possible, hopefully players like it and we’ll see what the future brings.
Obviously, the commercial success will largely determine Microsoft’s and in turn, Remedy’s commitment to the IP. If there’s no intention to craft any DLC, then we could be looking at a sequel if Quantum Break sells well enough. However, if we consider that Remedy has just trademarked Alan Wake’s Return and that they are known for taking their time while developing games, then the next entry in this brand new franchise could be a very long time away.
Quantum Break will be available for Windows 10 PC and Xbox One on April 5, with the PC version expected to feature a number of graphical improvements.

Quantum Break Producer Defends Option To Skip Live-Action Show; Says Some Are “Impossible To Please”

Producer on Remedy’s Quantum Break, Lennie Hakola, has taken to Twitter to ‘defend’ the game’s skippable live-action show.

Remedy Entertainment’s time-bending action game, Quantum Break, is releasing next month for both Xbox One and PC. Included in the game is a live-action TV show that focusses on the villains in the game. According Remedy, “the game is about the heroes and the show is about the villains”. This TV show isn’t merely for viewing purposes, as the show itself informs players how to play the game. Furthermore, the way the player plays the game, impacts the show.
Quantum Break consists of 5 acts, connected through 4 optional tv-episodes

As reported some months back, Quantum Break will consist of 5 acts, connected through 4 subbed and dubbed action TV-episodes, that are unlocked after each game act. The duration of each game act depends on gameplay style, and the choices the player makes.
Remedy has already confirmed that the game’s TV-episodes will be optional, and can be skipped if the player chooses so. The decision to make the game’s live-action show skippable, seems to have upset some players as they would have wanted the show to be mandatory.

Producer on Quantum Break, Lennie Hakola, took to Twitter to defend the option to skip the game’s live-action episodes.

I actually see a few people who are upset that you can skip the live action show in #QuantumBreak if they want to... what? Are options bad?

Hakola adds that while the show is skippable, he wouldn’t do so. According the producer, the option is there for those who don’t want to “flesh” out the game’s story.

I wouldn't do that, but the option is there for those who aren't interested in fleshing out the story. I think people will like it.

Having an option seems to be the right approach, but some are just “impossible to please”, according Hakola.
Last month, Remedy and Microsoft announced that Quantum Break will be released on both PC and Xbox One. Prior to the announcement, the game was always presented as an Xbox One exclusive. Quantum Break for PC will be the first DX12-only title. The PC system requirements for Quantum Break can be found here.
Do you feel that the game’s live-action show should have been mandatory? Leave a comment.

Quantum Break on PC doesn't require an always-online connection

Quantum Break's live-action video can be skipped on all platforms, alleviating the need for always-online connections.

We recently reported that PC players have no choice but to stream Quantum Break's live-action segments, raising questions whether or not the game would need a persistent internet connection on PC. Xbox players, on the other hand, have the option to download the videos for offline play.

Now a Remedy developer confirms that players will have the option to skip the game's video segments, meaning the game can be played offline on PC. "I see a few people who are upset that you can skip the live action show in #QuantumBreak if they want to... what? Are options bad?" Remedy developer Lennie Hakola said in a recent Tweet.

    Lennie Hakola ‎@HakolaRMD
I actually see a few people who are upset that you can skip the live action show in #QuantumBreak if they want to... what? Are options bad?

Although it's great news that the videos can be skipped, the live-action cutscenes are a huge portion of the game's storyline. "We have 40 different variations of the show in total where basically your choices get to make it evolve and change whether it's from a junction choice or we have these things called 'Quantum Ripples' which essentially unlocked sort of deleted scenes from the show," Remedy's Greg Louden told Game Informer.

Quantum Break originally ignited a controversy in the gaming community by breaking its Xbox One exclusivity, and Microsoft continued to fan the flames by confirming Remedy's time shooter is exclusive to the Windows Store.

Microsoft was quick to respond to gamers' ire by saying it just wants to "break down the walls and bring gamers together". Despite Microsoft's promises, both PC and Xbox One players remain dubious of the company's cross-platform approach.

Industry figures like Epic Games' Tim Sweeney has also called for gamers and developers to fight Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform, saying that Redmond is "monopolizing PC games development".

In any case, Quantum Break is slated to release April 5, 2016, across Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, and it'll be interesting to see if Microsoft's new unified gaming platform plan pays off.

Quantum Break won’t be releasing until April 5th, but to get even more excited for this time-bending title, a cinematic trailer featuring a cover of Nirvana has been released. Check out the trailer below.

Jack Joyce fights for survival in a world where time is broken. With his family in danger and the world at the brink of collapse, Jack must battle the evil Monarch Solutions using the only weapon he has: time itself. Set to a haunting cover of the iconic Nirvana track “Come As You Are,” this trailer immerses you in the time-bending experience of Quantum Break.

Quantum Break will be released simultaneously for PC and Xbox One within 3 weeks. The game will be the first DX12 only PC title. For PC, the action title requires at least a Geforce GTX 760 or Radeon R7 260X with 2GB of VRAM. Remedy and Microsoft recommend a GTX 970 or Radeon R9 390 with 4GB of VRAM. On Ultra settings, a GTX 980 Ti or Radeon R9 Fury X is required.

Remedy’s upcoming game will consist of 5 acts, connected through 4 subbed and dubbed action TV-episodes, that are unlocked after each game act. The duration of each act depends on gameplay style, and the choices the player makes. According Remedy, each TV-episode will be 22 minutes long. These episodes are skippable, but the developer recommends to watch in order to “flesh” out the game’s story.
Quantum Break was first scheduled for a release in 2014, but has been delayed multiple times. The most recent delay was due to a clash with other Xbox One exclusives releasing late 2015, according Microsoft. Remedy’s Sam Lake, has assured fans that the extra development time on the game, will be used to further “polish” the game.
As said, Quantum Break will be released for PC and Xbox One on April 5th.

    Boa tarde,

Apesar deste ser o tópico da versão Xbox One, também teremos esta preciosidade no PC. Aposto que a maioria aqui do covil vai jogar a versão da Windows Store

    Cumprimentos.

Remedy on DX12: Matching DX11 GPU Performance Not Trivial on All Architectures; “You’re the Driver Now”

When it launches on April 5, Remedy’s Quantum Break will be the second DirectX 12-only game after Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, though we’re certainly hoping for a very different result in terms of performance.
A few technical details of their experience with Northlight’s implementation of DirectX 12 just emerged from the presentation hosted yesterday by Remedy’s Graphics Programmer Ville Timonen, titled Advanced Graphics Techniques Tutorial Day: Developing The Northlight Engine: Lessons Learned.
The slides are now available publicly and there are a few interesting tidbits for sure. For example, in the following slide Timonen mentioned that the developer “is” the driver, under DirectX 12.
That’s because DX12 is a lower level API and as such, it requires far more work by the developers than DirectX 11, where the driver played an important role. He also stressed that programmers need to think in separate CPU/GPU timelines and have to be mindful of memory usage and performance.

It seems like DirectX 12 was implemented alongside a DX11 path, and Remedy took care of Xbox One first.

The conclusion is quite a far cry from a ringing endorsement of the new API by Microsoft, too.
The last slide says that in terms of GPU performance, developers can expect to match DirectX 11 if they did things right, but this is not trivial on all architectures. In all likelihood, this is a reference to NVIDIA’s current GPU architecture which doesn’t meld well with Asynchronous Compute for instance. Moreover, the slide warns that messing GPU memory management can be costly.
In terms of CPU performance, Remedy confirms that it’s easy to surpass DX11. We know that DX12 can handle a lot more draw calls, for instance, but truthfully not every game is bound by CPU overhead, as pointed out by the slide.

Overall, this pretty much confirmed what we’ve seen in the first DirectX 12 games like HITMAN, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Results are mixed to say the least and things like SLI/Crossfire have to be explicitly supported by developers; DX12 is far from the magic API some might have pictured and it will require considerable work from developers in order to completely surpass DX11.

Remedy slips, promises 1080p for Quantum Break but fails, miserably

Remedy is one of my favorite developers, and as a gigantic Max Payne fan, Quantum Break is a complete mess. After letting the press see the game earlier this year, EuroGamer has published their story on the game - but with a much more watered down fashion.

The site says Quantum Break has a "native resolution of 720p" instead of the promised 1080p 30FPS from Remedy, with no word from the developer on the resolution being dropped to Xbox 360 levels, and below what Remedy has said was fact until now. The site adds that "we've yet to see evidence of full HD 1080p gameplay in close analysis - barring the title's HUD elements and menus. In every scene tested so far, a native resolution of 720p is the consistent result found in each pixel count test".

Not only but, but the report says: "the use of film grain, depth of field, and camera and object blur sets the tone for the game, creating a distinctly soft-focused look that squarely hits the cinematic target the developers are aiming for. Image quality stands out here, for both good and bad reasons". So the image quality is good, but there are bad reasons too.

The site continues: "On the one hand Remedy's anti-aliasing solution in Quantum Break is excellent, creating a smooth presentation, though some shimmering is present across edges in motion. However, the game also appears soft compared to titles running natively at 1080p, or even 900p for that matter".

To wrap up, the site says "there's a lot of advanced technology powering Quantum Break, but ultimately some compromises had to be made in order to get the game running smoothly on Xbox One hardware". Compromises, Remedy? And Microsoft, you're here too - why are we launching games in 2016 on the best console Microsoft has ever made, and we're still stuck up 720p with bad performance impacting gameplay? What the hell, guys.

Microsoft has also been working closely with Remedy on Quantum Break, and this is a large game for Microsoft, because of its close collaboration with Remedy. It's a large Xbox One exclusive meant to combat Sony and its continued dominance with PS4 marketshare. Lots of money pumped into it, and marketing campaigns for it, so there would be back and forth with each other constantly over the years of development. And still, this is what we get? This needs to stop.
