Remedy Fails to Bring 1080p to Xbox One – Analysis Shows Quantum Break Runs at 720p

Reports are that Sony is working to make 4K gaming on consoles a thing with an upgraded, robust version of its PlayStation 4 system that will be powered by contempo hardware. But two and a half years of the eighth generation consoles’ existence quite clearly lay bare the fact that Sony is not the one who’s got more to worry about. Despite working with extra processing power that was previously reserved for Kinect, and trying to push the resolution to 1080p, Remedy Entertainment has reportedly not been able to optimize Quantum Break, their upcoming graphically-stunning action-adventure story-shooter, on the latest-gen Xbox One console.

Digital Foundry Analysis Suggests “Native Resolution of 720p” For Quantum Break on Xbox One – PC Version Not Tested

After much unnecessary controversy that followed Microsoft’s announcement regarding Quantum Break’s release on Windows 10 PCs, the long-awaited title will finally be up for grabs in only around a couple of weeks now on both platform. However, those who were looking forward to play the game on Xbox One in standard current-gen 1080p resolution with 30 frames per second that Remedy Entertainment had promised are in for a huge disappointment. The third-person shooter reportedly runs at a “native resolution of 720p.”
The news comes from the good folks over at Digital Foundry, who got the chance to play the first two chapters of Quantum Break at Remedy HQ for an “unrestricted” time. The outlet concluded that the pre-release version of the time-bending action-adventure game maintained native 720p resolution instead of 1080p, and that is not just for the screen-space lighting, ambient occlusion, and global illumination pipelines that Remedy had already clarified would be rendered at 720p. In its SIGGRAPH 2015 whitepaper [PDF], the developer pointed out that the overall final output of the game on Xbox One will be 1920×1080. Digital Foundry writes:
“The paper [Remedy’s whitepaper] also states Xbox One’s final output is 1920×1080, and that’s where there is some confusion – as we’ve yet to see evidence of full HD 1080p gameplay in close analysis – barring the title’s HUD elements and menus. In every scene tested so far, a native resolution of 720p is the consistent result found in each pixel count test – so while there’s every possibility of individual render targets operating at higher resolutions, basic geometry that we’re able to measure hands in a 720p result as things stand.”
    Advertisements
Expecting a game to run at native 1080p resolution on eighth generation console is not much to ask for, as 720p is something that you would see on last-gen PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. This is yet another sign that developers have to struggle with the hardware that powers the current-gen consoles, especially Microsoft’s Xbox One, to deliver smooth gameplay performance with full HD resolution and solid frame-rate.
As for the Windows 10 PC version of Quantum Break, you can expect it to offer 1080p gameplay with 30 frames per second or even go as high as 4K with 60 frames per second. Digital Foundry has nothing to say about it though, as they didn’t get a chance to check it out.
“But let’s not forget that there’s also a PC version in development too. We didn’t have time to sample this at the press event, but Remedy were pretty open on the state of the build at that time. Limited to 1080p at 30fps, it still required plenty of work before launch. The developer is promising a maximum 4K experience at 60fps, but it remains to be seen exactly how this will pan out, or exactly what kind of hardware will be required to make this happen.”
The most recent Windows 10 PC port, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, didn’t fair quite well in terms of technical performance, so it’ll be interesting to see what Remedy has in store for us with Quantum Break. There is also no word from the developer on the game’s resolution being dropped to Xbox 360 levels on Xbox One, so we will have to wait and see what they have to say about it. Of course, Quantum Break is a big, big game for Microsoft, and so they certainly wouldn’t want anything to go wrong with it.

Quantum Break To Receive Massive Patch Improving Graphics This Week

Quantum Break, the new game developed by Remedy Entertainment launching soon on Xbox One and PC in all regions, is going to be one of the best looking games of the year. Recently, several outlets have already had the chance to play the game, also showing its beautiful graphics, but it seems like the game is going to look even better at launch, according to one specific preview of the game.

Angry Centaur Gaming has revealed in a new Quantum Break preview video which has been shared online today that the game is going to receive a massive patch sometime this week, which will apparently come with plenty of improvements for graphics. You can hear the bit about the upcoming patch by going at around the 4:18 mark of the video below.

Last week, Microsoft and Remedy Entertainment have released an official launch trailer for Quantum Break. The trailer is a cinematic trailer featuring the game’s main character as well as members of evil Monarch Solutions. The trailer also features a cover of the iconic Nirvana track Come As You Are.
Quantum Break has originally been revealed as an Xbox One exclusive title. One month ago, however, Microsoft revealed that the game by Remedy is also going to be released on PC. Quantum Break on PC will be the first DX12 title and will only be playable on Windows 10.
Following Quantum Break’s launch, the team is apparently not going to release any DLC for the game. This, however, doesn’t mean that the team is done with the game’s universe, as they already have some ideas on how to expand it in the future.

Xbox head wants you to try Quantum Break before judging 720p resolution

One of Microsoft’s most heavily promoted exclusives for the Xbox One, Quantum Break, is launching next month and over the weekend some interesting news hit the internet. It turns out that the game runs at 720p on the Xbox One, this was confirmed in a test by Digital Foundry as well as Phil Spencer himself but the Xbox head would like gamers to actually try the game out for themselves before judging it on its resolution.
Following on from the report, Spencer was asked on Twitter about Quantum Break’s 720p resolution, to which he replied: “I encourage you to try a game before you make any pre-judgements about what makes a game good or bad”.

This isn’t the first 720p exclusive to hit Microsoft’s console, Dead Rising 3 was part of the console’s launch lineup and was also limited to 720p and 30 frames per second. However, there will be a PC version of Quantum Break right off the bat that will be able to run at higher resolutions, like 4K. The Digital Foundry report noted that the game was running at 1080p/30fps at a recent press event but Remedy expects to bump up the resolution by launch.
However, we do not know if the PC version of Quantum Break will be locked to 30 frames per second or not.

[UPDATED: Improved UI & Load Times] Quantum Break To Receive Massive Patch Improving Graphics This Week

[Update 2] On the Neogaf forums, Remedy’s head of PR, Thomas Puha, has stated that a title update is to be released. According Puha, reviewers already have access to this patch. The update will include mostly bug fixes, some UI changes, localization improvements and improved load times
[Update] Thomas Puha, head of PR at Remedy, has revealed that a title update will be released, but it won’t come with any graphics improvements, but mostly bugfixes.

Quantum Break's day-one patch won't boost graphics, still 720p on Xbox

Microsoft has been proudly beating its chest about Quantum Break over the past months, that is, until it was revealed that Quantum Break only runs at 720p on Xbox One. Faced with this controversy, both Redmond and Remedy have kept mum on the subject, but the devs did let slip that the game's day one patch won't "remedy" the game's lower res.

According to Remedy PR rep Thomas Puha, Quantum Break's day one patch isn't going to instantly ramp the game's resolution to 1080p on Xbox One. Instead, the patch will be your standard fare of bug fixes and tweaks, despite the reports of a massive multi-GB graphics overhaul update. "No, we have never said anything like (a big graphical update). There is a title update, mostly bugfixes etc. Reviewers got it last week already."

Remedy and Microsoft have caught a lot of flak from upset Xbox gamers, especially since Microsoft continues to maintain a kind of skewed favoritism to the new platform. But then again PC gamers have the awful UWP platform and janky Microsoft Store to contend with.

In any case, the gaming giant needs to wrangle its image quickly before it embroils itself in any more controversies, and continue giving compelling reasons to buy the Xbox One. From where I'm sitting there really aren't that many incentives, especially when the platform's most illustrious "exclusive" is outperformed so dramatically by its PC counterpart.

Quantum Break 720P Base Resolution Confirmed; Temporal Reconstruction Used

Quantum Break developer, Remedy Entertainment, has now officially responded to the game’s alleged resolution of 720P on Xbox One.

A few days ago, Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry reported that Quantum Break on the Xbox One, possibly runs at a native resolution of 720P. Although Eurogamer couldn’t quite get their finger on the game’s final resolution, they did state that there’s “every possibility of individual render targets operating at higher resolutions”.
Following the report from DF, discussions erupted about the game’s resolution. Luckily, Remedy has now officially released a statement, revealing the game’s resolution and anti-aliasing details.
“Quantum Break’s 1080p output is a temporal reconstruction from four previous 720p 4x MSAA frames. This approach gets us high pixel quality in combination with complex shading and effects, allowing us to achieve a cinematic look. However, varying sample counts between passes and temporal upscaling makes talking about resolution, as it is traditionally understood, complicated in the case of Quantum Break. Since the start of Quantum Break’s development, the most important thing for Remedy and Microsoft has been delivering a compelling gaming experience with superior artistic quality. This is what Remedy is renowned for. We’re confident that we have achieved this, and can’t wait to hear what fans think on April 5 when they play the game.”

It seems that Digital Foundry was correct with their initial conclusions on the game’s native resolution. The base resolution of Quantum Break on Xbox One is 720P with temporal reconstruction. According Digital Foundry’s updated report, “high quality multi-sampling anti-aliasing”, adds to the image quality of Quantum Break.

The same technique was used by Remedy for Alan Wake on the Xbox 360 – “a sub-native resolution paired with excellent 4x MSAA”.
So there you have it, Quantum Break on Xbox One has a base resolution of 720P on Xbox One, but as Microsoft’s Phil Spencer stated recently – “try a game before you make any pre-judgements about what makes a game good or bad”.

Microsoft explains the Quantum Break 720P conundrum, it's complicated

Recently there's been much controversy regarding the reduction in native resolution in Quantum Break from the promised 1080P at 30FPS to 720P and performance that still wasn't quite what we expected, or rightly wanted from a Microsoft platform exclusive game that's making use of DirectX 12. Remedy has spoken up about the resolution dispute, explaining, for better or for worse, their decision and also the actual techniques used to render at their target resolution, which is technically 1080P, though doesn't quite start that way. It's... complicated it seems.

Quantum Break is a very good looking game, there's really no denying that fact outright. There are aspects that are quite stunning given the base hardware configuration that Remedy is working with. The scenes we've seen in the various trailers, demos and screenshots are, thankfully, accurate to the actual game. That is, there's no "downgrade" that's happened in the slightest, it's just that the final perceived resolution differs from the initial resolution, and can vary wildly in-between.

It's 1080P, sort of. But initially, any given scene seems to begin life as a 720p frame with 4X MSAA added to it (which actually looks great by the way). But it's upscaled and reconstructed from four frames to make the final output that we see. This is a way to save on power by making it the resolution we want with a decent amount of visual quality thrown in.

It's not really the fact that it's actually 720p that's so distressing, but that we've been misled about the resolution. Halo 5 is an example of a very good looking game that isn't quite 1080P, but they were very forthcoming about the dynamic resolution scaling, and, in the end, it didn't really affect anyone's perception of the game. The UI elements and other on-screen elements ended up being very usable at any resolution it was rendered at. So the resolution wasn't the issue there either, as is the case with Quantum Break. The game is well made and the resolution doesn't limit the experience in this particular case. It's the deceptive marketing that's more concerning. The filmic and cinematic feel is well placed, and you'll no doubt still enjoy it. The full statement from Remedy is below.

Quantum Break's 1080p output is a temporal reconstruction from four previous 720p 4xMSAA frames. This approach gets us high pixel quality in combination with complex shading and effects, allowing us to achieve a cinematic look. However, varying sample counts between passes and temporal upscaling makes talking about resolution, as it is traditionally understood, complicated in the case of Quantum Break. Since the start of "Quantum Break's" development, the most important thing for Remedy and Microsoft has been delivering a compelling gaming experience with superior artistic quality. This is what Remedy is renowned for. We're confident that we have achieved this, and can't wait to hear what fans think on April 5 when they play the game.

Quantum Break PC Settings Possibly Revealed; Shadow Filtering, Global Illumination & More

The Quantum Break PC settings might have been revealed through some recently uploaded screenshots of the game’s display settings.

At lot has been said recently regarding the Xbox One version of the game, and while the Xbox version seems to be limited to a base resolution of 720P, the PC version clearly isn’t. Earlier this month, Remedy’s head or PR, Thomas Puha, stated that pc owners will be able to push their rigs as much as they want.
“The core gameplay experience is the same, but for those who’ve invested in a high-end PC, we offer things like 4K resolution, mouse and keyboard support, and running the game at 60 frames per second. You can also tweak some of the visual effects, such as the lighting and shadow quality – things that PC gamers expect”, Puha said.
But there seem to be more options to tweak in the game’s display settings. A user on Reddit has allegedly uploaded some screenshots of the display settings from the game. We’ve included both screenshots down below.
    Advertisements

If the screenshots are legit, PC gamers will be able to tweak the game’s volumetric lighting, shadow resolution, shadow filtering, texture resolution, effects quality, and global illumination quality. Additionally, there are options to turn ‘screen space ambient occlusion’ and screen space reflections’, on or off. As promised, players will have the option to game in 4K resolution.
Interestingly, these techniques were highlighted during Remedy’s SIGGRAPH 2015 presentation last year.
This talk will cover Remedy’s approach to multiscale global illumination in Quantum Break. Firstly, we present an efficient voxel tree structure and demonstrate its applications to world-space global illumination and to automatic specular probe generation using local visibility analysis. Secondly, to complement the large-scale illumination, we present our screen-space lighting solution which handles small scale ambient occlusion, reflections, and indirect lighting.
Quantum Break will be released simultaneously for PC and Xbox One on April 5th.

Quantum Break Devs Finally Get To Play The Game At Home, Head Of PR Surprised At Hard Difficulty

Quantum Break, the new cinematic action game developed by Remedy Entertainment for Xbox One and PC, is getting closer and closer to its final release date. Even though the team has been able to enjoy the final product for some time, it’s been revealed a few hours ago that they were only able to play Quantum Break at home recently. The team’s PR head has recently shared his opinion on the game after being able to enjoy the game in an ideal setting.

Remedy’s Thomas Puha has confirmed a few hours ago that the team is now able to finally enjoy the game at home in a “real” setting, which gives them a whole different perspective on it.

    Thomas Puha ‎@RiotRMD
Fun to finally play #QuantumBreak at home in a "real" setting. Even us devs only get that now, weeks before release.

This has allowed Mr. Puha to enjoy the game as it’s meant to be enjoyed. He has praised the game’s rhythm and was also surprised at the game’s Hard difficulty, which led him to struggle through the game’s Act 4. This is definitely good news for those who want to be challenged by the game.

    Thomas Puha ‎@RiotRMD
I got a nice rhythm. Play an act or half, watch an live action episode and continue the following day. Actually surprised at Hard difficulty

    Thomas Puha ‎@RiotRMD
Was struggling through Act 4 lol

Ultimately, Thomas Puha thinks that the unique combination between gameplay and live action featured in Quantum Break works, and it’s quite entertaining.

    Thomas Puha ‎@RiotRMD
I honestly think the game and live action we are doing works and is quite entertaining for our game at least. #QuantumBreak @QuantumBreak

Yesterday, the settings for the PC version of Quantum Break have been revealed through some recently uploaded screenshots. According to the new screens, it will be possible to to tweak the game’s volumetric lighting, shadow resolution, shadow filtering, texture resolution, effects quality, and global illumination quality. As previously revealed, players will be able to play the game in 4K resolution if their machines are powerful enough.

    Boa noite,

    Cumprimentos.

Quantum Break Episode Pack Surfaces On The Xbox Store, Download Is 75 GB BiG

One of the more interesting features of the cinematic action game Quantum Break, developed by Remedy Entertainment, are live action episodes which will provide players with additional details on the story. When the live action episodes have been confirmed for the game, it’s also been confirmed that players will be able to stream them without having to download. However, it looks like those who would prefer to have them on their console will be able to download them fully.

A few hours ago, the Quantum Break Episode Pack has surfaced on the Xbox Store. The pack includes all the live action episodes and it’s a rather big download, 75 GB big. Even though downloading the pack is definitely not as convenient as streaming them, it’s still good to see Microsoft and Remedy Entertainment giving players options.

Yesterday, Remedy’s head of PR Thomas Puha has confirmed that the team is finally able to enjoy the game at home. Mr. Puha has also shared his opinion on the game, stating that he feels like the unique combination between gameplay and live action episodes works quite well. He’s also been surprised at the game’s Hard difficulty, which led him to struggle on Act 4.
Earlier this week, the settings for the PC version of Quantum Break have been revealed through some screenshots. According to the screens, players will be able to to tweak the game’s volumetric lighting, shadow resolution, shadow filtering, texture resolution, effects quality, and global illumination quality. As previously revealed, it will also be able to play the game in 4K resolution if their machines are powerful enough.

Remedy’s Head Of PR On Preference For Quantum Break Live Action Show & The Need For Streaming

Remedy’s head of public relations, Thomas Puha, has replied to some questions regarding the necessity of the Quantum Break Live Action Show and the need to stream the show, instead of including the show on the game’s disc.

Quantum Break comes with a live-action TV show that focuses on the villains in the game. According to Remedy, “the game is about the heroes and the show is about the villains”. This TV show isn’t merely for viewing purposes, as the show itself informs players how to play the game. Furthermore, the way the player plays the game, impacts the show.
On the Neogaf forums, users have been wondering in what way player choices affect the show. From the looks of it, the game’s main story is pretty much nailed down, but some scenes in the show may vary depending on player choices.
Quantum Break Live Action Show simply wouldn’t fit on disc

Puha took time to confirm that Quantum Break’s TV show isn’t a ‘build your own adventure” show. Episodes might have one or two short new scenes compared to another version, according to Puha.
“It is actually like that and there are over 40 variants, but no, we have never said it’s a “choose your own adventure”, it’s definitely not branching like that. So episodes might have one or two short new scenes compared to another version, but that necessitates another version of that episode…hence streaming”

The PR head also replied to the question why there was a need for a separate TV show, instead of including an animated cut-scene in the game itself. Judging from Puha’s answer, it’s Remedy’s preference to include a live-action show because of the different perspective of the villains in the game. Including an animated in-game cut-scene of 20 minutes would have required insane recourses.
Because we like live action since the first Max Payne. Because the show is from the perspective of the villains so using another medium made sense to differentiate it.
Also, animating a 20 cut-scene with lighting, vfx, all of that…that would have been beyond us really, that would have taken massive amount of resources. I dont think a 20 minute animted in-game cut-scene showing whats up at Monarch Solutions would have really worked.
Last but not least, Puha answered why the show needed to be streamed, rather than including it on the game disc.
Simply not enough space on the disc. Like I’ve said before, it’s not like Remedy and Microsoft didnt discuss at length what the best options are, but there’s always pros and cons to each solution and lots of development variables that I cannot get into.
Simply put, there wasn’t enough space to include the show on the Quantum Break disc. The game itself already takes up more than 45GB. As posted yesterday, the game’s Episode Pack is available for download on Xbox One, and takes up to 75GB of hard drive space. This would have required the use of multiple discs, and in general players don’t like swapping discs.
