Internal Email Reveals Microsoft’s Plans of Windows 10 Mobile Rollout This March

Microsoft was expected to release the highly awaited Windows 10 Mobile update for the Windows Phone 8 devices in February. A report last week claimed that the company was planning to release the update in the week of March 7. While users are expecting to receive the notification on their handsets this week, it might be “too early” for this upgrade to arrive as Microsoft is now reportedly planning to start the Windows 10 Mobile rollout passively later this month, after the regular monthly service updates are sent out for the Windows 10 devices.

Windows 10 Mobile rollout for older phones to begin later this month

Evleaks is reporting that the company will be releasing the update later in March, after it has pushed out the regular monthly updates to the Windows 10 powered devices.

In an email to partners, seen by VentureBeat, Microsoft is now targeting a release this month, to occur after the regular monthly service updates for the two Windows 10-powered handsets already on the market, the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. – Venture Beat
Venture Beat adds that at the time of release, the rollout will be passive. The update will be available to download manually for older Lumia handsets, and Microsoft will start “actively pushing the new firmware to eligible devices” in the future, “on an unspecified timetable.” The latest update on the Windows 10 Mobile rollout for older Lumia devices clarifies that unlike previous expectations, the firmware update process is now expected in two separate releases: the service update for Windows 10 devices, and the upgrade for Windows Phone 8 handsets.
This report too is unconfirmed like all that we have seen so far about Windows 10 Mobile release for older devices. However, looking at last week’s report citing a March release and the current leak also hinting at a release later this month, Windows Phone users might finally receive the highly anticipated firmware update on their devices this March.

Microsoft Reportedly Launching Windows 10 Mobile In March

If you’re running a Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL or a Lumia 550, your smartphone came straight from the factory running Windows 10 Mobile (which is still a work in progress). For those running older Lumias with Windows Phone 8.1, you’ve had to wait patiently for the official release of Windows 10 Mobile or take your chances in the Windows Insider program via test builds.
Now, Evan Blass, who is well known to those that follow the mobile industry, is claiming that Microsoft will initiate a wide scale rollout of Windows 10 Mobile later this month. “In an email to partners, Microsoft is now targeting a release this month, to occur after the regular monthly service update,” said Blass. “The rollout is said to begin passively, from Microsoft’s perspective, in that users will need to initiate it manually from their handsets.”

Blass goes on to state that after Microsoft has monitored enough successful manual upgrades from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile, it will then commence with automatic updates so that all eligible devices will receive will receive the update.
Windows 10 for PC launched on July 29th, 2015, but Microsoft never had any intentions of delivering Windows 10 Mobile that soon. The company had originally planned on delivering Windows 10 Mobile in Fall 2015, but eventually settled on a December launch. However, that time has come and gone leaving us hoping that the March launch will indeed stick. Given Blass’ track record, however, we are pretty confident that Windows 10 Mobile will launch this month.
Windows 10 Mobile brings a slew of enhancements over its Windows Phone 8.1 predecessor including all new Office apps, Continuum support, Windows Universal Apps, enhancements to Cortana and the Microsoft Edge web browser.

Changelog and FAQs Published for Windows 10 Mobile 10586.164, Released to Insiders

We reported last week that Microsoft was internally testing Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.164. The build is finally available to those on the Insider program, however, like the previous build this update too is only available to those on the Slow or the Release rings.

Windows 10 Mobile 10586.164 out for Production, Slow and Release rings:

Following the release of build 10586.122 last week, Microsoft is now releasing a new preview build to those on the Slow and Production rings of the Windows Insider program. A cumulative update, you can install this build on your Windows 10 Mobile device that’s not running the Redstone build (14xxx). As previously explained, if you are on the Fast ring running a non-Redstone build, you can switch your device back to Slow or Release Preview ring to install these cumulative updates. Microsoft has also pushed out the same release to Windows 10 PC.
Expect nothing new as the cumulative updates focus on fixing the bugs and improving overall performance. Microsoft hasn’t published a full changelog yet (updated), however, we have some information (via WindowsCentral) about what’s inside this latest cumulative update.

    • Faster saving of screenshots
    • Smoother video playback
    • Opening of PDF files in Edge improvements

To get the update go to Settings > Update & security > Phone update > Check for updates. On its Answers page, following FAQs are published by the company:
Q: Who is receiving this build?
A: This release is being sent to Retail open market devices as well as our Insiders in the WIP Slow and Release Preview rings.
    Advertisements

Q: I’m in the WIP Fast ring. How do I obtain this .164 release?
A: Change rings in the Windows Insider app to either WIP Slow or Release Preview, take the update, and then change back to the WIP Fast ring.
Q: My device already has a Redstone build on it (14xxx). Does this build apply to me?
A: No. This is a cumulative update for devices on the Threshold 10586 build.
Q: Why is it necessary for WIP Fast users to switch rings?
A: It’s a publishing limitation. Changing rings will not be a permanent process, but it is required for this particular release.
Q: Why didn’t Insiders get to test this release before releasing it to Retail users?
A: Insiders did get to test it! The previously released 10586.122 build is nearly identical to this new .164 build. There are no major feature changes between the two builds. Changes were focused on a few key bug fixes and other required updates to ensure this build was ready to release to Win10 Retail devices.
    [Update]: Complete changelog

    • Improvements for the reliability of app notifications, including text messages and alarms not ringing as scheduled.
    • Improvements for text message backup to reduce data and battery usage.
    • Fixes for Microsoft Edge with address bar suggestions showing late or persisting during navigation, “Close all tabs” not closing all tabs, and Word Flow on the address bar not functioning as expected.
    • Fix for a problem where the Microsoft account was not detected by the Outlook Mail, Outlook Calendar and People app. Attempting to add a new contact in this state caused the People app to crash for some users.
    • Fix for a problem that caused the Wi-Fi connection to temporarily switch off after prolonged use for some users.
    • Fix for a problem that caused first-party app updates to fail to install successfully for some users, leaving the apps in state where they cannot be launched.
    • Improvements for battery usage, Bluetooth connectivity, and OS reliability.

Windows 10 Mobile Preview 14283 Brings Bug Fixes & Phone Improvements

Microsoft has started rolling out Windows 10 Mobile Redstone Insider Preview build 14283 to the Fast ring of Windows Insider program. The latest preview update is currently available for Insiders on the Fast ring who own the following devices:

    • Lumia 950
    • Lumia 950 XL
    • Lumia 650
    • Lumia 550
    • Xiaomi Mi4
    • ALCATEL Fierce XL

Windows 10 Mobile Redstone 14283 released:

After pushing out a few cumulative updates to Windows 10 Mobile Insiders on the Slow and Release rings, Microsoft is finally sending updates to those on the Fast ring. Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14283 brings the following improvements to the mobile operating system.
    Advertisements

    • Improvements to the Phone app: We know how important it is to stay informed when someone is trying to reach you, whether that’s through notifications, Live tiles on your Start screen, or directly within your communications applications. To help with this, we’ve added missed call and voicemail waiting indicators to the tabs inside the Phone app. Once you navigate to a tab with a missed call or voicemail – the indicator goes away. We’ve got another change coming that will keep the indicator in place until you navigate away from the tab. There is also a bug where you might not see the indicator clear right away – a fix is coming soon for this as well. Let us know what you think!
    • Updates to Outlook Mail & Calendar: Yesterday, we released an update to the Outlook Mail & Calendar apps that introduces some new features and improvements. In Outlook Mail, you can turn off the message preview text in the message list (Settings > Reading > Conversation and turning “Show preview text” off). You can also quickly get rid of junk email in your inbox by pressing down on a message to bring up the context menu and choosing ‘Move to Junk’. In Outlook Calendar, you can now let others know “I’ll be late” directly from meeting notifications.
    • Coming Soon – the Feedback Hub: When you open Insider Hub on this build, you will see a new welcome dialog for Feedback Hub. Coming in the next mobile and PC build – we are bringing together the Insider Hub and Windows Feedback apps into a single app called the Feedback Hub. The Feedback Hub carries over all of the best things from the previous two apps plus some new things Insiders will enjoy. For example, in addition to upvoting feedback, you will be able to also leave comments on feedback. We have also redesigned the homepage in Feedback Hub to bring together announcements and quests. Stay tuned as we’ll have more to say about the Feedback Hub with the next builds for mobile and PC when the app is ready for Insiders to use.

Following are all the known issues in Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14283:

    • We have updated the Bluetooth AVRCP profile on mobile to version 1.5. Some cars only tell Windows what they support and vice versa during the initial pairing ceremony. In order for this update to take full effect, you need to delete your existing Bluetooth pairing with your car and then re-pair. After doing so, if you notice any issues using media playback controls or missing artist or track info, please file a new feedback item including your car’s make, model, and year.
    • If you have a Microsoft Band 1 or 2 paired to your phone, it will no longer sync after updating to this build due to a system API failure that occurs after the update. If you want to get your Band syncing with your phone again – you can temporarily change the language of your phone as a short term workaround until we release a fix. Additionally, you can also choose to reset your phone to get out of this state – however you may experience this update issue again with the next build until we fix this issue. This issue may also impact Skype video and audio calls.
    • Connectivity to older Wi-Fi networks using the WEP encryption security method may be broken. WEP is an insecure method for protecting your Wi-Fi connection but a small percentage of Windows users still use it. A workaround would be to configure your wireless routers to use WPA or WPA2 or wait for the next Insider flight when this is fixed.

To learn more about what is fixed in this latest Windows 10 Mobile Redstone update sent out to the Fast ring, please check the official blog post published by Microsoft’s Gabe Aul.

Windows 10 Mobile Rollout Now Rumored to Begin March 17

Windows 10 Mobile operating system is yet to be released for Windows Phone devices. While the operating system is being tested and used on the newly released devices, Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows Phone 8 users are still waiting for its release on their smartphone. Several rumors have leaked in the last 3 months always giving a rollout timeline that falls closer to “soon.” Following what has now become a tradition for Windows 10 Mobile rollout dates, another report has come up claiming that Microsoft may kick off Windows 10 Mobile roll out from March 17th. The report also shares a list of devices that will receive the update initially.

Windows 10 Mobile rollout may begin March 17

There’s no official word on the availability of Windows 10 Mobile for older devices, running on Windows Phone 8.1. A new report from WindowsBlogItalia claims that the company will start the rollout of its new mobile operating system from March 17th. The report lists the following devices which will be eligible for the OS update in the first wave:

    • Lumia 1520
    • Lumia 930
    • Lumia 830
    • Lumia 640
    • Lumia 640 XL
    • Lumia 638
    • Lumia 636
    • Lumia 535

Another report from Italy was received earlier this month, when Vodafone Italy said that it would start the roll out from March 7. The rollout, as we know, didn’t happen.

Microsoft has definitely ramped up the number of testing builds that it releases to the Windows Insider program. Insiders in the Slow, Release and even Fast rings have been asked recently to test the non-Redstone updates for the upgrade process and stability. Looking at this, the Windows 10 Mobile rollout for Windows Phone 8.1 does seem imminent, but just how soon this “soon” will come, we can only wait and see.
We will keep you updated as we hear more about Microsoft’s rumored or official plans about Windows 10 Mobile rollout.

    Boa tarde,

    Cumprimentos.

Internal Windows 10 Mobile Build Reveals New Messaging Options

Windows 10 Mobile Redstone Preview Build 14288, expected for release this week, is currently going through internal testing at Redmond. The upcoming preview build will reportedly offer new Messaging options, a latest screenshot has revealed.
Windows 10 Mobile Rollout Now Rumored to Begin March 17

Windows 10 Mobile to bring Messaging improvements

The upcoming Windows 10 Mobile 14288 will introduce the ability to set Cortana as the default SMS client, a leaked screenshot has revealed. Microsoft has been trying to improve Cortana in its efforts of making it more “personal” and useful to both the Windows 10 PC and Windows 10 Mobile users. Giving it more capabilities, the company is now adding a new functionality that would allow users to set Cortana as their default SMS app.
Giving more power to Cortana, Microsoft is trying to help users perform tasks without having to touch their devices. While the latest update appears to give full control to Cortana over messages on Windows 10 Mobile, this is not the first implementation of Cortana in the Messaging app. Cortana already has access to messages on the mobile operating system. Microsoft is now going for a deeper implementation, but it is not clear how this is going to work exactly.
    Advertisements

The source has said that while they can see the ability to set Cortana as the default SMS client, the feature doesn’t really work. They also said that during testing they were able to receive a text message, but still had to use Messaging + Skype app to read it. The feature is reportedly coming from an internal build and might be available to Windows Insiders in a future preview build.
Microsoft is working to improve its personal digital assistant providing better synchronization between Windows 10 PC and Windows 10 Mobile. Earlier reports had revealed that users will soon be able to view app and call notifications right on their Windows 10 computers. Working similar to how OS X and iOS interact with each other, the functionality is still under development.

Microsoft to Announce Windows 10 Mobile with “Same-Day Availability” Tomorrow

A report last week revealed Microsoft’s plans of finally launching the long-awaited Windows 10 Mobile update for Windows Phone devices on Thursday, March 17. Evan Blass of @evleaks fame has now corroborated this launch date with some more details.

    Windows 10 Mobile releasing tomorrow?

After promising an official release for older Lumia devices in December, Microsoft has shied away from sharing a Windows 10 Mobile launch date for Windows Phone 8.1 devices. In the last three months, we have seen plenty of reports giving us launch date in January, on February 29th, and then March 7 before March 17 was reported as the finallaunch date last week.
Blass is now reporting that Microsoft is indeed ready to announce the Windows 10 Mobile’s release for older devices on March 17. Sourcing his information from “a person familiar with the company’s plans,” he also claims that Microsoft will announce the “same-day availability” of the mobile operating system tomorrow.
    Advertisements

Microsoft’s long-awaited Windows 10 Mobile upgrade is on the eve of being deployed. Playing its cards incredibly close to the chest, the company will announce its same-day availability on March 17, according to a person familiar with the company’s plans.
The report further confirms earlier details of Windows 10 Mobile rollout strategy which would have to be installed manually by the users initially. Microsoft will start pushing the update as an OTA update at a later, undisclosed date. The manual installation will only work for the devices eligible to receive the upgrade during the first wave. The list of eligible devices has kept changing over the last few months, and there is still no confirmation as to which Windows Phone 8.1 devices will receive the Windows 10 Mobile update, when it is finally available tomorrow.
Blass suggests that an official list of the Windows Phones powered “Nokia- and Microsoft-branded Lumias” that will receive the Windows 10 Mobile OTA update will also be revealed on that same day.

Microsoft (Kind of) Confirms Windows 10 Mobile Release Happening Later Today

After three different reports claiming that Microsoft will finally start releasing its long-awaited Windows 10 Mobile operating system for Windows Phone 8.1 devices on March 17, here comes at least some sort of hint from Redmond itself. Since December, this is possibly the first time Microsoft has said at least “something” about Windows 10 Mobile release.

Microsoft inadvertently confirms Windows 10 Mobile release

After 3 months and several reports giving us different Windows 10 Mobile rollout dates, it seems like today will definitely be the day. We already saw reports giving a March 17 as the day Windows 10 Mobile rollout begins for Windows Phone devices. Vodafone Italy was the first source giving March 17 as the official Windows 10 Mobile rollout date. This was corroborated yesterday by two different reports from Evleaks and T-Mobile Croatia. The update is reportedly going to be passive where users who intend to upgrade to the upcoming new mobile operating system version will have to manually install it.

    Advertisements

The folks at MSPowerUser have now spotted a slight change in Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile landing page:
[…] change we spotted was Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile landing page. The site , which previously read “The latest and greatest Windows experience is coming to Lumia smartphones” as early as Monday, Microsoft’s Lumia site now proclaims “The latest and greatest Windows experience is now on Lumia smartphones”.
We agree, this is nothing big. BUT, considering the silence that the company has maintained over Windows 10 Mobile rollout, “now on Lumia“seems like a confirmation coming from Microsoft itself, right on the night before the launch is expected.
If everyone is reading into this correctly and the carrier reports are indeed on point this time around, we could finally see Microsoft delivering Windows 10 Mobile to Windows Phone devices later today. T-Mobile Croatia also claimed that eligible Windows Phone 8.1 devices will be required to download an Upgrade Advisor app to install the update on their devices. We will know more about this once Microsoft makes the official announcement.

Microsoft Officially Announces Windows 10 Mobile for Windows Phone 8.1 – Rollout Begins

Finally! Microsoft has officially started rolling out Windows 10 Mobile update for Windows Phone 8.1 devices. Here is how to get the update on your own smartphones.
    – List of Windows Phone 8.1 devices that can upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile

Microsoft begins official Windows 10 Mobile rollout for WP8.1

Following several reports giving March 17 as the official Windows 10 Mobile rollout date, the company has just posted the official announcement. Microsoft has announced Windows 10 Mobile release and has also started delivering the operating system to select Windows Phone 81 devices, as the “same-day availability” was hinted at earlier. Users will have to update Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app on their devices first to get the latest updates. Wondering if your Windows Phone 8.1 has made it to the first wave? In its statement (shared below), Microsoft points to a page with list of devices, but we can’t see anything yet (update: check the list here).
In the meantime, you can confirm if your device has received the update by going to the Store > install the Upgrade Advisor app > run the app to see if the update is available, and then select Enable Windows 10 upgrade.
Here’s the complete announcement that has been posted by Microsoft’s CVP Windows and Devices Group Core Quality Michael Fortin:
Today, we’re pleased to begin the roll-out of Windows 10 Mobile to select Windows Phone 8.1 devices. There are a lot of great new features in Windows 10 Mobile, like Continuum, Windows Hello and Cortana.
    Advertisements

Consistent with our approach to the Windows 10 PC upgrade, we are focused on delivering a high quality experience for our customers. The Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app can be downloaded from the Windows Store to see if the upgrade is available for your device.
You can see the current list of Windows Phone 8.1 devices that are supported for the upgrade to Windows 10 here.
This list includes a limited set of Windows Phone 8.1 devices and does not include some devices that are currently running Windows 10 Mobile in the Windows 10 Mobile Insider program. As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience. Our goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that we are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience.

    Boa tarde,

    Cumprimentos.

Why You Should Wait Before Upgrading to Windows 10 Mobile

Windows fans have been waiting for Windows 10 Mobile release for the Windows Phone devices for a long time now. Earlier today, Microsoft finally started rolling out the new operating system to older devices. However, in the eagerness of getting the new OS on your own devices, users will easily fall for an OS that may still not be ready for many users who like everything to be perfect. Yes, the OS is out of the pre-release testing period, but will modify certain features of the OS in the upgrade progress. For example, notifications for missed calls, messages, and emails on contact tiles is not supported yet.
If you are on the fence wondering if you should upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile right away or wait for it to become more stable and error-free, the following list of expected feature changes will help you in making the right decision.
    – List of eligible Windows Phone devices that can upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile

Should you upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile or not?

Microsoft has started rolling out Windows 10 Mobile to select Windows Phone 8.1 devices around the world. While the update brings new features and improvements to your devices, you should be aware that it will also bring some changes or remove some features that you may not approve of. To help users learn if the latest update is right for them, Microsoft has added the list of features that will be modified or removed during the upgrade process.
When you install the Windows 10 upgrade, some features currently on your device will be modified or removed, including the following:

    • Notifications for missed calls, messages, and emails on contact tiles is not supported at the time of Windows 10 Mobile release.
    • Me Tile and Me Card are no longer supported.
    • Cortana can no longer search for apps, setting, email, text messaging, contacts and QR Codes on the device and can no longer open apps through voice commands.
    • “Hey Cortana” is no longer available on some upgraded devices.
    • Group tiles can no longer be used to receive social networking status updates.
    • Indoor Maps are no longer available for some locations.
    • Certain enterprise features, including Data Protection Under Lock, are not available; please contact your Microsoft Volume Licensing representative for more information.
    • At time of Windows 10 Mobile release Outlook Mail app cannot open .EML attachments.
    • Outlook Calendar app does not support Tasks.
    • MDM capability to prevent saving and sharing Office documents not supported.

    • Many apps, in-app purchases, files, and settings will migrate as part of the upgrade. However, some apps, in-app purchases, or settings may not migrate.
    • Some apps and content sold separately. Feature and app availability and experience may vary by device and market.
If you are only interested to upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile because of some specific features like Continuum, please note that many of these new features also have specific hardware requirements. You can read about these and more details at the official page under “Additional requirements to use certain features.”
Make sure to read all these details to know what you are signing up for. Once you upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, it will receive updates automatically. Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise users will be able to postpone these updates.
How to upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile:

For those ready to take the leap,

    • Go to Windows Store > install Upgrade Advisor app.
    • Click on Next to find out if the update is available for your phone.
    • If it is, check on Enable Windows 10 Upgrade and follow the on screen instructions.
    • Next, go to Settings > Phone Update > Check for Updates to download the update.

Please note that once Windows 10 Mobile is installed on your device, you will have to check for updates again from Settings to get the latest build 10586.164. The first installation upgrades your device on build number 10586.107.

No Plans to Release Windows 10 Mobile for 512MB Windows Phone Devices – Microsoft

After months of speculations and rumors surrounding the 512MB Windows Phone devices, Microsoft has now confirmed that phones with 512MB of RAM will not receive Windows 10 Mobile update.
Steps to Upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile

512MB Windows Phone devices won’t receive Windows 10 Mobile

Before Windows 10 Mobile was released to the public today for Windows Phone 8.1 devices, there were several questions surrounding the latest OS version’s compatibility with the older devices. Exactly what specifications should your devices have to feature to be eligible for the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade? In an answer to a query today, Microsoft has clearly responded that it has no plans of releasing Windows 10 Mobile to 512MB Windows Phone devices.

    Corey ‎@coreyd_0512
@GabeAul Bet you're getting spammed with stuff like this, but will there be any plans to put W10M on devices with 512MB ram like Lumia 635?

@coreyd_0512 We do not have plans to put W10M on devices with 512 MB ^TJ

Remember, these devices have been running Windows 10 Mobile Insider previews and we have seen users actually being happy with the new OS (read: Windows 10 Mobile 10586.71 is a “Breeze” for 512MB Lumia Phones). However, we also saw several reports that claimed that Microsoft will be leaving the 512MB devices off the upgrade path. Although there is no information if this decision is based on feedback received from the Insider users of 512MB Windows Phone devices or something else, one thing is certain that this lot is out of the list of eligible Windows 10 Mobile devices.

We have already shared with you the complete list of supported Windows 10 Mobile devices that will be receiving the update during this first wave. If you notice in this list, Microsoft has clearly indicated that only 1GB versions of Lumia 635, Lumia 636 and Lumia 638 will receive today’s update. Looking at this, it seemed likely that Microsoft didn’t want to bring the new operating system on the devices having less than 1GB of RAM.
It’s not necessary that if the Windows 10 Mobile insider previews worked fine for users, the final OS version could have run successfully for the users who aren’t as adventurous as those on the Insider program. As folks at Winbeta have noted, “some people would likely argue that their 512MB devices ran Windows 10 Mobile just fine in the Windows Insider program, Microsoft did have to draw the line somewhere. It’s entirely possible that their internal testing indicated potential issues with less than 1GB of RAM, or that certain features were problematic.”
Don’t forget to let us know what you think about Microsoft’s decision to leave the 512MB Windows Phone devices behind. Were you looking forward to getting the new operating system on your device?

Windows 10 Mobile Is Insanely Frustrating To Use, Here’s Why

I appreciate every mobile OS for what it has to offer and always use either Android or Windows Phone (now Windows 10 Mobile) alongside my iPhone, which happens to my daily driver. Now, speaking of Windows 10 Mobile, I bought myself a Microsoft Lumia a week back which runs Windows 10 Mobile out of the box, just to see where Microsoft’s mobile operating system stands currently compared to the likes of iOS and Android. And for me, things haven’t changed one bit on the Microsoft side of the fence, and have rather gotten frustrating over time with every release.

Before you hurl the hate grenade at me, I want to make it abundantly clear that you should read this article from an iPhone user’s point of view, not someone who has been using Microsoft mobile platform since day one. With that out of the way, let me dive right in and get straight to the ‘frustrating’ point.
Windows 10 Mobile Is Clearly Unfinished Software Desperately Asking For Consumer And Developer Attention

As soon as I booted into Windows 10 Mobile, I had to go through the usual setup process. Now, everything is pretty straightforward – you connect to WiFi, sign in using your Microsoft Account and you’re done right? Well, not quite.
While I thought I was done with everything and was absolutely ready to use my smartphone, it occurred to me that I couldn’t download a single app, wasn’t even able to update them, and heck, I couldn’t even install system updates, for no seemingly apparent reason. Strangely, I followed some online threads with some explanations to the problem, and the fix? Well, set the device’s time based on your location with everything set up accurately. Guess what? Everything was set to automatic and everything was perfect, but still no resolve. The thing that actually fixed it was setting the time zone to complete manual. Whenever I switched to automatic, the same thing happened again.
    What the hell, Microsoft?

With one frustration out of the way, I jumped straight onto the next – the way how multitasking works. It feels broken. Whenever I launched an app from the multitasking view, most of the time, everything was reloaded from scratch, with no sense of the app actually living in the background, ready to be recalled later on. I would blame this on how Windows 10 Mobile manages memory. This is quite sad actually, given the fact that Microsoft creates its own hardware and software, so things should be smooth as butter, right? Wrong.
But it gets worse – apps disappear from the multitasking view on their own if left unattended for a long period of time. What am I doing wrong here?
    Advertisements

The general UI in Windows 10 Mobile feels unfinished. You tap on something, and you literally have to wait for a second or two for everything to settle down on the screen so that you can make your next move. You can actually feel that the code in the background needs to complete and settle down before you can move further. There’s no sense of responsiveness anywhere. Maybe it’s just because I had a low-end device at hand – a Lumia 550, in case you’re wondering. But hey, Microsoft makes its hardware and software itself, so I don’t expect this to happen. At all. Not one bit.
I will not jump into the app situation on Windows 10 Mobile at all as many others have done so countless times in the past. The existing apps feel incomplete, and it’s quite evident that developers aren’t even remotely interested in pushing Windows 10 Mobile versions of their apps in the right direction. And at this point, I can’t even say that this would change going into the future, as existing developers are actually jumping ship rather than making slow progress. Take HERE maps for example.
Even with everything set up absolutely perfectly, the severe crippled performance of apps just can’t be ignored. It’s like your thumb is way ahead of the compute power that lies underneath Windows 10 Mobile. Either I’m asking for too much here, or Microsoft can’t deliver on performance, nor the developers who are developing apps for Windows 10 Mobile.

Quite frankly, a similarly priced Android smartphone would perform way better than Windows 10 Mobile in terms of everything. There’s no way Microsoft is going to figure out the frustration which comes from using its mobile operating system. Things just don’t feel in place. A simple toggle which should be at a thumb’s reach needs more figuring out than a simple move of chess.
It’s time Microsoft picked up an iPhone or a Nexus device and see where it’s going wrong on its own end rather than firing blank party poppers at customers and developers.
What do you think, as a consumer, that Microsoft should do to improve Windows 10 Mobile down the road? Or should the company give up on its mobile platform altogether and instead focus on enhancing the desktop experience?

Microsoft has “no plans for a second wave” of Windows 10 Mobile for Older Devices

Windows 10 Mobile was released to several Windows Phone 8.1 devices yesterday. Earlier believed to be the first wave of Windows 10 rollout, Microsoft later confirmed that the company has no plans to bring the new operating system on 512MB RAM devices. In more bad news, Microsoft is now saying that no other older devices will be getting the Windows 10 Mobile update in the future, and that yesterday’s release is full and final.

No more devices to receive Windows 10 Mobile

Microsoft was expected to release Windows 10 Mobile to all the Windows Phone 8.1 devices, as several reports had suggested last year. The update was to come in two waves, at first for the high-end devices and then to the smaller devices with lesser specs. Until today it was believed by everyone that yesterday’s Windows 10 Mobile was only the first wave of the rollout strategy and that more devices will be added to the list of eligible devices.
However, to the dismay of many Windows Phone users, the company has now confirmed that no second wave is coming. This means that the devices included in yesterday’s list of eligible devices are all of the devices that will be able to enjoy the fruits of Windows 10 Mobile.

    isti ‎@hpityu
@windowsinsider @danbriant Sure, its not on the list. But can we expect a 2nd wave? Since the hardware meets specs and preview runs well...

@hpityu There are no plans for a second wave. ^JH

Gabe Aul has said that the decision was made based on feedback received from the Insiders as there was a higher number of reports of performance issues on these devices.

@GabeAul @NorthFaceHiker can you give me an insight on which criteria did 1020 fail, so that you decided to leave it. Would be nice to know

@DrKumarSS @NorthFaceHiker Higher % of reports of performance issues, lower % of votes of likely to recommend

Again, if you were hoping to see your Windows Phone device being added to the list, it’s not likely to happen. However, looking at how often the company changes its decisions, we might see the update coming to the left out Windows Phone devices after all.
You can try the new operating system from the Windows Insider Program, but you won’t be able to try the builds from the company’s Development Branch. The devices will continue to get updated until Redstone updates start shipping later this summer. Until then, you will be enjoying the same firmware and features that are sent out to supported devices.

Microsoft Reneges On Windows 10 Mobile Upgrade Commitment, Leaves Some Lumias Out In The Cold

It's safe to say that at one point or another, the vast majority of us have believed what we were told by a particular company and purchased a product because of it. But have you ever purchased something only to find out later that one of the company's initial promises turned out to be untrue? reddit user Plazma10 has, and he's far from happy about it.
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...Win_JR_LTE.jpg

Blu's Win JR LTE Smartphone Plazma10 is a citizen of the Great White North, and as all Canadians know, there's an unfortunate trade-off to our locale -- while there's great maple syrup around every corner, the selection of mobile phones and carriers can be sub-par. That unfortunate fact forces many people to purchase phones that sometimes seem less-than-ideal. For this particular owner, though, the Blu Win JR LTE seemed unbeatable. It was being sold at a great price (~$120 CAD), and promised a Windows 10 upgrade when Microsoft released the OS.
Therein lies the problem. Plamza10 purchased the phone (or phones, rather, for his family) a year ago, which was before Windows 10 launched. At that time, Microsoft was eager to promote Windows 10 support on as many phones as possible, and this one from Blu happened to be one of them. It's important to note that the Windows 10 support wasn't just something this user's carrier promoted, it was something Microsoft itself promoted on its website. Unfortunately, the phone's product page got updated after Plazma10 posted the reddit thread, highlighted here:
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages/NewsItem/36867/content/small_Microsoft_Product_Page_Change.jpg
Was the change a coincidence? It's hard to say, but considering the fact that the page had been online for an entire year touting Windows 10 support and only got changed after Plazma10 posted a complaint online, it's hard to blame those who might think something shady has happened. This particular user isn't sugarcoating his thoughts either, "They silently changed their page this morning! Someone from Microsoft must read this forum - because after 1 year the page has JUST changed! I received no official word from anyone at Microsoft - instead they chose to silently update the page and tell no one. This is SO shady!! I think after this reddit post they decided to do it - wow that's a low blow Microsoft!"
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...Lumia_Icon.jpg

The Lumia Icon isn't upgradeable to Windows 10 As it happens, Plazma10 isn't the only one out of a Windows 10 upgrade. When Microsoft rolled-out Windows 10 to certain Lumia devices last week, it skipped over some that were also originally supposed to be upgradeable. Those include the Lumia 1020 and Lumia Icon. If you're an owner of what you feel might be an "old" Lumia, you can pretty much guarantee it's not going to be supported, but when phones were highlighted from the get go as supporting Windows 10 and they don't... that's a bit of a problem.
It's the kind of problem Plazma10 is taking on. Taking the advice of others, he submitted a report to the Better Business Bureau to complain. The Eaten Centre location where the phone was purchased refused to issue a refund even though it could be proven through Microsoft's website that the phone should indeed support Windows 10. It was after that point that the product page was updated, so at this point all we can do is wait and see if anything else comes out of this story. If enough owners of this phone raise a stink, we could very well see this change corrected. Otherwise, it could be deemed false advertising, which could become an even bigger hassle for Microsoft.

Windows 10 Mobile Will Not Come to All Lumia Phones as Promised

With news that Windows 10 Mobile will be coming to the Lumia line of phones, people were eagerly awaiting the update after what could only be considered a lackluster of support and empty promises for windows 8 mobile. Sadly not everyone will be able to enjoy this as it has now been revealed that windows 10 mobile will not be coming to all the Lumia phones as it was previously promised.
What does this mean? If you are one of the unlucky ones you will end up with a phone that will permanently stuck on Windows Phone 8. If you own one of the following phones, you will be given the option to update to windows 10 sometime soon on your phone:

    • Lumia 1520
    • Lumia 930
    • Lumia 830
    • Lumia 730
    • Lumia 735
    • Lumia 640
    • Lumia 640XL
    • Lumia 635 1GB
    • Lumia 636 1GB
    • Lumia 638 1GB
    • Lumia 540
    • Lumia 535
    • Lumia 532
    • Lumia 435
    • Lumia 430

While the age of some Lumia phones may seem like a good reason to stop supporting them, the pressure to get their mobile platform correct seems to be building with expectations that Windows 10’s united platform would help save a platform that many consider almost invisible on the modern market.
The real problem people have is the broken promises that seem to be spewing from Microsoft. Firstly there is a long list of phones running Windows Phone 7 which were never upgraded to 8, leaving them with a broken and unsupported mobile OS and doing the same to Windows Phone 8 users question if the mobile system is as dead as it’s been reported.
