O Chrome 32 é estupidamente leve relativamente ao FF.
Mas não uso o Chrome porque as extensões não chegam aos calcanhares das do FF.

Google to kill NPAPI support in Chrome browser

Google is going ahead with its plans to end support for the NPAPI protocol in the Chrome browser which will in turn end support for the Microsoft Silverlight plugin. Business critical apps will have until the Autumn of next year to migrate. The Microsoft runtime depends on an ageing protocol called Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface, or NPAPI for short. Google is currently phasing out support for this protocol in Chrome.
Google explains that continuing to support Netscape causes unnecessary lag, which obviously isn’t good as demand for faster browsers continues to rise. Google has already been removing reliance on NPAPI in certain applications like Google Hangouts and Google Earth. However, sites that rely on Silverlight will soon become unavailable, including proprietary software for businesses.

This might not have a huge impact on every day users though as currently NPAPI plugins are disabled by default in Chrome. However, this will kill off the loophole that allowed Linux users to unofficially watch Netflix in Chrome, which was unable to render until version 37 released on the OS.

Adobe Releases Flash Player Update With Critical Security Patch But Be Careful Of Fake Download Malware

If you have Flash Player installed, and chances are pretty overwhelming that you do, you'll want to make sure that you're equipped with the latest and greatest version. Last month, Adobe issued a Flash update that blocked certain exploit kits from being able to take advantage of a user's PC, but as it turns out, that update wasn't enough to prevent against new related exploits in the future. This update, as you'd expect, helps take care of that.

Adobe lists these versions as vulnerable:

    • Adobe Flash Player 15.0.0.223 and earlier versions
    • Adobe Flash Player 13.0.0.252 and earlier 13.x versions
    • Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.418 and earlier versions for Linux

The most common up-to-date version is 15.0.0.239, but if you're running a non-Windows platform, you can see which version corresponds to you here. Interestingly, while Google Chrome claims to always bundle the latest version of Flash, mine is still stuck on the vulnerable 223 version. Meanwhile, my system-wide Flash is up-to-date - but that means little when Chrome is my go-to browser.

Emoji Is Coming to Chrome on OS X

Google’s Chrome is very popular browser among users of Apple’s OS X. However, in this age of Social Media, the browser has had one very notable omission – emoji.
Yes, it’s amazing to think that any browser is without the popular snippets of emotion littered across the web. Finally though, it seems that Google is bringing the cherubic characters to their OS X flavour of Chrome.
The Next Web reports that users of the latest developer builds of Chrome have found emoji now works. Mac users can now use them for themselves by running Google’s Chrome Canary, the special testing version of the browser.
The characters should be included in stable builds in the coming weeks.

There's Been A Secret Game In Your Chrome Browser This Whole Time

This sad, helpless dinosaur probably looks familiar to you - when you use Google's Chrome browser and can't connect to the internet, this shows up (to remind you how shitty your internet service provider is and how they deserve to be as extinct as the T-Rex).
But did you know that this dinosaur was ALSO the main character in a secret game hidden in your browser?
If you press the space bar, some land appears below the dinosaur, who immediately falls towards it...

And then the game begins - you get a score counter at the top, and the dinosaur starts running. You can dodge the cacti by jumping over them by clicking the mouse or by using the space bar.

When you hit a cactus, it's game over. But hey! At least you can do SOMETHING when Comcast is screwing up your wi-fi.

Time to turn off your wi-fi and try it out for yourself!

Using Multiple Accounts Becomes Easier, Google Adds Account Switcher to Chrome

Google Chrome’s beta version was equipped with an account switcher tool back in August last year and now the stable version of Chrome has also been equipped with one. So if you have multiple accounts, in this busy day and age you probably do, or just a single one, keeping your work private just became easier.
Now you can save your own tabs, bookmarks and history on your stable version of Chrome

If you don’t see an icon, or your name if you’re logged in to your Google account, on the top right hand side of your Chrome then you’re like me and don’t close your Chrome browser often. While there may be many reasons to keep your browser open I’d suggest you close it now and upon restarting it will show you a new icon which is an account switcher.
“Get started by clicking on ‘You’ in the upper right corner of your Chrome window and then clicking ‘Sign in to Chrome.’ You’ll be able to switch devices and pick up where you left off with all of your tabs, bookmarks, and history automatically kept in sync. If you share a computer, click ‘Switch person’ to add your profile and get your own bookmarks, apps, and theme. Switching lets you keep your stuff separate,” explained Google.

”Anyone who’s argued over the TV remote knows that sharing a living room doesn’t mean you want to share everything else. The same is true on the web. So in the latest Chrome beta, we’re exploring a new way for you to share your computer without sharing your business.” Said Chrome’s blogspot
There’s also a browse as Guest feature in which you can let other people use Chrome without them ever seeing your stuff and after they’ve done their work and closed their tabs their browsing information will be deleted from the computer. The main difference between the Incognito mode and the Guest mode is that the latter is treated as a separate profile that can’t access data from your main profile. To enable Guest mode, click on Your name (or You if you’ve still not signed in) > Switch person > Browse as Guest.

    Whatsapp web messenger launches

oday Whatsapp made a new web app available for its popular messaging client that will allow you to talk to your contacts from your desktop browser. While this currently only works in Google Chrome, support for other browsers is planned and should be available soon. Once your phone is linked to the browser through the use of a QR code displayed on your PC and a scanner in the phone app, you will have full access to all of your contacts and messaging history, in a familiar interface that looks very much like the phone version. This includes any pictures and sound clips that have been sent and you can also send these from the web app as well.

To get this update you will need the latest version of Whatsapp for your device with new versions available today on Android, Windows Phone, Nokia S60, BlackBerry and BB10 smartphones. The web app actually communicates through your phone, so a connection to your phone is needed in order to send and receive messages. If the connection to your phone is lost, then so is your ability to send and receive messages.
Now that more Whatsapp messages are sent every day than text messages it’s good to see that they are allowing alternative ways to access the service. But unfortunately they have also been clamping down on users of 3rd party apps, giving them 24 hour bans from using 3rd party clients such as “WhatsApp Plus”. Presumably this is to prevent an incident similar to the problems that Snapchat had with third party apps leaking photos, but it is unfortunate that they are not willing to work with 3rd party developers.

Google Fixes 62 Security Bugs With Release of Chrome 40

Google announced on Wednesday the release of Chrome 40 for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. The latest update for the popular Web browser (40.0.2214.91) includes a total of 62 security fixes.
According to the search giant, external researchers reported 26 vulnerabilities, 17 of which are high severity issues.
The researcher who uses the online moniker yangdingning has been rewarded with a total of $9,000 for reporting two memory corruption issues in ICU (CVE-2014-7923 and CVE-2014-7926). Christian Holler got a total of $7,000 for a couple of memory corruption bugs affecting V8 (CVE-2014-7927 and CVE-2014-7928).
cloudfuzzer received a total of $12,000 for a memory corruption in V8 (CVE-2014-7931), three use-after-free flaws in DOM (CVE-2014-7930, CVE-2014-7929 and CVE-2014-7934) and two medium-severity out-of-bounds read issues affecting PDFium.
Atte Kettunen of OUSPG reported five vulnerabilities, three of which are high severity bugs. Kettunen got $6,500 for identifying these flaws.
Other high-severity issues were reported by mark.buer (use-after-free in Web audio), aohelin (use-after-free in FFmpeg), Khalil Zhani (use-after-free in Speech), Christoph Diehl (use-after-free in Views), and Takeshi Terada (same-origin-bypass in V8).
The researchers miaubiz, fuzztercluck and jiayaoqijia were credited by Google for reporting various medium severity vulnerabilities.
Kettunen, Holler, cloudfuzzer and Zhani received an additional $35,000 from Google for working with the company during the development cycle to prevent vulnerabilities from reaching the latest stable channel of Chrome.
Researchers who contributed to making Chrome 40 secure were rewarded with a total of $88,500.
Google promised to increase vulnerability rewards in late September and the company appears to have kept its promise. On Wednesday, an expert reported getting a $5,000 reward for a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Google Apps administration console.
It’s also worth pointing out that with the release of Chrome 40, Google has disabled SSL 3.0, the protocol found to be vulnerable to Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption (POODLE) attacks. SSL 3.0 fallback was disabled in Chrome 39 and now the company has disabled support for the old protocol completely.

Google Chrome to drop SPDY for HTTP/2

Google has announced that it is dropping support for its in-house SPDY protocol in favour of the HTTP/2 standard, following the adoption of many of the former's features by the latter.

Google launched SPDY - pronounced 'speedy,' naturally - back in 2009 with the promise that it would complement the existing HyperText Transport Protocol 1.1 (HTTP/1.1) standard with new features designed to significantly speed up the web. These included header compression, multiplexed streams which allowed content to be loaded simultaneously rather than an object at a time, and traffic prioritisation which would see the content vital to the page's rendering being loaded first. At the time, the company claimed that its initial implementation of SPDY in its Chrome web browser led to an impressive 64 per cent reduction in page load times when paired with a SPDY-compatible web server.

Since SPDY's introduction, the HTTP/2 protocol has marched steadily towards standardisation. In doing so, it has picked up numerous features which make it similar in practice to SPDY - including header compression, multiplexing and traffic prioritisation. As a result, developers interested in speeding up web traffic have begun looking towards the standard HTTP/2 over non-standard SPDY - and that includes Google's own developers.

'Chrome has supported SPDY since Chrome 6, but since most of the benefits are present in HTTP/2, it’s time to say goodbye,' wrote Google's Chris Bentzel on the Chromium blog late last night. 'We plan to remove support for SPDY in early 2016, and to also remove support for the TLS extension named NPN in favor of ALPN in Chrome at the same time. Server developers are strongly encouraged to move to HTTP/2 and ALPN.

'We’re happy to have contributed to the open standards process that led to HTTP/2, and hope to see wide adoption given the broad industry engagement on standardisation and implementation. We also look forward to further advancements in fundamental Internet protocols that lead to a faster and more secure Internet for everyone.'

The removal of SPDY will take place once HTTP/2 support is fully integrated into the Chrome browser, which Bentzel indicates will begin 'in the upcoming weeks' with the release of Chrome 40

Sharing Dropbox Files in Gmail Now Easier Thanks to Chrome Extension

Big user of Dropbox? Well thanks to a new Chrome extension, it is now easier to share Dropbox files in Gmail. The extension is only in beta stages, but works similarly to adding files from Google Drive. Simply select the file with the Dropbox menu will attach it, and add a link to the body. Just like adding a file from Google Drive, this allows for sharing of larger files than Gmail’s attachment limit.

HTTP/2 finalised says IETF HTTP Working Group chair

HTTP/2 has been finalised, according to Mark Nottingham, chair the IETF HTTP Working Group and am a member of the W3C TAG. In a blog post today simply entitled 'HTTP/2 is Done', Nottingham said that the IESG has formally approved the HTTP/2 and HPACK specifications. Now the standard is going to go through some editorial tweaks before publishing.

The new version of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol is a "huge deal," reports The Next Web. It is the first major revamp of the protocol since 1999 when HTTP/1.1 was adopted. As such it will bring the protocol up to speed with several new web technologies and provide benefits as faster page loads, hold connections longer and help servers push data to your cache. According to the HTTP/2 homepage on Github "the focus of the protocol is on performance; specifically, end-user perceived latency, network and server resource usage. One major goal is to allow the use of a single connection from browsers to a Web site."
The key high level differences that HTTP/2 possesses compared to HTTP/1.X are as follows:

    • HTTP/2 is binary, instead of textual
    • It is fully multiplexed, instead of ordered and blocking
    • It can therefore use one connection for parallelism
    • It uses header compression to reduce overhead
    • It allows servers to 'push' responses proactively into client caches

HTTP/2's multiplexing goes further than HTTP/1.1's parallelism to fix a problem called 'head of line blocking' where only one request can be outstanding on a connection at a time. The new protocol implements far fewer concurrent connections. Previously a single web page with multiple origins could easily open 30 or so data connections, causing problems such as buffer overflow, congestion and monopolising your network – effectively stealing resources from other internet services/apps. The implementation of header compression will also improve your browsing experience greatly, especially on mobiles, according to the HTTP/2 FAQ.

    Mark Nottingham @mnot Follow
on the blog: HTTP/2 is Done http://bit.ly/1CFPzUW

Only a few days back Google announced that it plans to fully switch to HTTP/2 in Chrome. Google's SPDY/2 was the basis of HTTP/2 and its core developers were involved in HTTP/2. TNW reports that developers can already test out the new protocol in both Chrome and Firefox. For more information please refer to the HTTP/2 FAQ.

Google Talk for Windows to be Killed Off Tomorrow

Chat application Google Talk for Windows is to permanently close tomorrow, to be usurped indefinitely by Google Hangouts, Google’s more advanced instant messaging and video chat service.
Any user planning to move from Google Talk for Windows, a standalone app, to Google Hangouts now needs to use the Chrome browser. However, there are plenty of holdouts still using Google Talk, preferring the old software to Hangouts due to advantages with file-sharing and appearing invisible. Those people will still be able to use Google Talk functionality, but through third-party applications, such as Trillian and Pidgin, though Google says it cannot guarantee users’ privacy or security.

Chrome Now Warns Users Before They Visit Harmful Sites

Google software engineer Lucas Ballard updated the company's Online Security Blog with news that the Chrome web browser, Google Search and Google Ads now provide even more protection against malicious sites and unwanted software. News of the beefed-up Safe Browsing service arrives after Google rolled out a feature in October 2013 that warns users about a potential threat when clicking on a download link. When users click on the link within the Chrome browser, a warning pops up saying that the file may "harm your browsing experience," and the download is blocked unless the user clicks the "Dismiss" button.
The company also rolled out a "reset browser settings" button, which allows users to return Chrome to its default settings with the click of a button. To access the button, Chrome users simply need to hit the Settings icon in the top-right corner, select "Settings" and expand "Show Advanced Settings" to reveal "Reset Settings." Users can then click on the "Reset Settings" button.
According to Ballard, the Chrome browser will now show a new red warning when the user clicks on a link that's listed in the Safe Browsing blacklist. "Attackers on (website) might attempt to trick you into installing programs that harm your browsing experience," the warning states. Examples include programs that change the homepage, showing additional ads on visited websites and so on.
As for Google Search, this service now "incorporates signals that identify such deceptive sites," meaning users will likely not see the blacklisted sites in search results. Google has also disabled ads that lead to sites hosting unwanted software.
"If you're a site owner, we recommend that you register your site with Google Webmaster Tools," Ballard said. "This will help you stay informed when we find something on your site that leads people to download unwanted software, and will provide you with helpful tips to resolve such issues."
Google's Safe Browsing website revealed that around one billion people use the service, and "tens of millions" see warnings each week whether it's in Google's Chrome, Apple's Safari or Mozilla's Firefox browsers. Even more, each day Safe Browsing scans "billions" of websites and uncovers ten thousand malicious sites serving up unwanted downloads. Many of these websites are legitimate but have been infiltrated by hackers.
Google began warning about malicious downloads back in April 2011. Moheeb Abu Rajab of the Google Security Team said that a warning will appear when the user clicks on a download URL that matches one residing on Google's latest Safe Browsing blacklist. By comparison, the new Safe Browsing feature introduced this week warns users before they even visit the website hosting the unwanted software.
"We're constantly working to keep people safe across the web," Ballard said.

    New Chrome removes X11 dependence

Freon graphics stack gets an airing
Chrome OS 41 has been been updated to Google's new "Freon" graphics stack and removes X11 dependencies from Google's world.

Freon aims for better performance, reduced power consumption, and a smaller Chrome OS binary. Under the Freon driver model, the Chrome browser talks directly to the kernel's DRM/KMS APIs and is also communicating directly with OpenGL ES for the 3D drawing functionalities.
This functionality is mostly for the Intel Chromebooks while the Samsung ARM Chromebooks should receive similar treatment later.
Freon-supported devices currently include the Chromebook Pixel, Acer C720, ASUS Chromebox, HP Chromebox, LG Chromebase, Acer Chromebox, and Dell Chromebox.
The initial limitations are due to being dependent upon DRM/KMS support by the graphics hardware.
Among the benefits of Freon is supporting hardware overlays for compositing, partial screen update support, zero-copy texture uploads, external display device improvements, and reduced input in the latency stack.

Notifications Feature Added to Google Chrome Beta

Google has just added the push notification feature from the Canary build to the latest beta. This means that the feature is just one step away of being integrated into the stable browser.
The Chrome Beta 42 for all platforms is said to come with two APIs that allow websites to send notifications, even if the browser is not open. The feature can also be turned off, having notifications generated and displayed with the “Site Setting” option which lets you disable the notification if you do not need to be notified again in the future from that particular website.
In addition to the latter, the browser now comes with a new setting that lets you pause plug-in content. The feature is extremely useful to prevent old computers from slowing down or even save battery if you do not need all plug-ins to run at the same time.
Also, the Chrome Beta for Android now displays banners which make it easier to add shortcuts to the home screen. However, only well-made mobile websites that meet the company’s eligible criteria can take advantage of the new feature.
