    OSX Yosemite

Researchers discover 'Wirelurker' iOS malware that spreads through infected OS X apps

Just days after a Swedish hacker discovered a serious vulnerability in Apple's newly released OS X Yosemite, security researchers at Palo Alto Networks have found a new malware that infects iOS devices through OS X.
Dubbed WireLurker, the malware is primarily spreading through infected OS X apps (467 in number so far) present in the Maiyadi App Store, a third-party Mac app store in China, that have already been downloaded 356,104 times, possibly infecting hundreds of thousands of users.
Once WireLurker infects an OS X computer, it monitors any iOS device connected via USB with the computer and installs downloaded third-party applications or automatically generated malicious applications onto the device, regardless of whether it is jailbroken or not.
"WireLurker exhibits complex code structure, multiple component versions, file hiding, code obfuscation and customized encryption to thwart anti-reversing", the company said in a report.

A Look At OS X Yosemite And iOS 8.1

    Introduction

It has been a busy year for Apple, although one could argue it has been more of a busy few months. The yearly updates for most of Apple's products now occur in September and October, and as a result we've seen the release of a number of new products and services in a very short period of time. On the hardware side we have the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the iPad Air 2 and Mini 3, the iMac with Retina 5K display, and a preview of the upcoming Apple Watch. The software side has arguably been even more exciting with the release of iOS 8 and its first major update iOS 8.1, OS X Yosemite, and Apple Pay.
The theme this year appears to be integration and the power of a software and hardware ecosystem. Apple has always had some level of integration between iOS and OS X. As time went on, both operating systems began to share a core set of applications like Reminders, Calendar, and Notes. The iPad extended this even further by bringing the iWork and iLife suites to mobile. iCloud also played a key role in integrating both systems, by synchronizing documents and photos between all of a user's devices. However, the launch of iOS 7 with its visual and functional enhancements left many of the shared features and applications on OS X feeling left behind.
OS X Yosemite brings with it a massive visual overhaul, on a scale even greater than what we saw with iOS 7. This makes sense, as OS X is an operating system for desktops and laptops which makes it inherently more expansive and complex than iOS. Although OS X is not nearly as popular as iOS in terms of user base, the fact that the redesign changes some visual elements that have existed for over 14 years makes it quite a monumental moment in Apple's history. These changes finally unify the visual styles of both operating systems, which were once united but split with the launch of iOS 7.
The integration of these two operating systems goes far beyond a common type of visual design. OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.1 also include new features that allow them to work together in unprecedented ways. Features like Handoff blur the borders between the iPhone, the Mac, and the iPad by allowing you to continue work you began on one device on another. SMS and call forwarding takes communication abilities that were typically reserved for the iPhone and brings them to every device.
There's a lot to talk about, and it all begins at the aesthetic level with the new design of Yosemite.

Apple removes TRIM support for third-party SSDs with OS X update

Cindori Software provides the Trim Enabler program that allows Apple users to use third-party SSDs and still have TRIM functionality. An SSD has no idea what data is erased by the filesystem, but TRIM marks data for deletion that has been removed at the filesystem level. This allows the SSD to clean itself up during a routine task called garbage collection. TRIM is important for SSDs, without it they will eventually slow down and become less responsive. Without notice Apple has blocked third-party applications, such as Trim Enabler, from working unless users institute a workaround that creates a security risk with OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Unfortunately, users are finding this out after the upgrade has already taken place.

A summary of the issue from Cindori Software:

In OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), Apple has introduced a new security requirement called kext signing. (A kext is a kernel extension, or a driver, in Mac OS X)

Kext signing basically works by checking if all the drivers in the system are unaltered by a third party, or approved by Apple. If they have been modified, Yosemite will no longer load the driver. This is a means of enforcing security, but also a way for Apple to control what hardware that third party developers can release OS X support for.

Since Trim Enabler works by unlocking the Trim driver for 3rd party SSD's, this security setting prevents Trim Enabler to enable Trim on Yosemite. To continue to use Trim Enabler and continue to get Trim for your third party SSD, you first need to disable the kext signing security setting.

It is important to note that the kext-signing setting is global, if you disable it you should be careful to only install system drivers from sources that you trust.

Apple urges consumers to download apps only from authorized sources

Apple hasn't heard reports of any users that have been compromised by the "Masque Attack," but cybersecurity experts are still asking Apple engineers to develop new protections to ensure enterprise users are more secure.

"We designed OS X and iOS with built-in security safeguards to help protect customers and warn them before installing potentially malicious software," an Apple spokesman recently said. "We're not aware of any customers that have actually been affected by this attack."

Cybercriminals want to hijack OS X and iOS users - and have largely struggled to find security loopholes - but are increasing their efforts into malware development.

É impressionante a optimização que se atinge nos sistemas Mac, 82% de bateria e ainda com 8 horas de autonomia em navegação no Safari.

E isto num MacBook Pro de 2011, que já não é referência nenhuma a nível de bateria.

Third-party SSD vendors address Apple TRIM issue

Apple recently upset their users by removing support for third-party software that enables TRIM functionality. Perhaps most distressing was the fact the change went unannounced. Many Apple users with Trim Enabler, a third party app that enables TRIM functionality, unfortunately bricked their installs when they updated to OS X 10.10 Yosemite. There is a method for enabling TRIM with third-party SSDs, but it involves creating a massive security vulnerability. SSDs can work without TRIM but speed is reduced and endurance also takes a hit. TRIM works by complimenting the Garbage Collection routines inside the SSD, which allows the early removal of previously deleted data.

After the news was released we were contacted by several third-party SSD vendors about the impact of removing TRIM functionality. From our conversations it was revealed that only one manufacturer currently has native TRIM support for Apple products. Angelbird has supported native Apple TRIM support for two years, and the Angelbird wrk for Mac is the only SSD right now that circumvents the issue. Chris, our consumer SSD guru, recently took an in-depth look at the SSD in the Angelbird SSD wrk 512GB SSD Review. The wrk leverages a Silicon Motion SM2246EN controller, but we aren't sure if that specific controller is the key to native Apple TRIM support. We contacted Angelbird representatives and they confirmed native TRIM support, but could not share specifics on exactly how they enable it. Angelbird representatives also confirmed they have external USB 3.0 devices that support TRIM through their proprietary software.

Apple lança updates para OSX Yosemite e iOS.

The latest update for iPhones and iPads, iOS 8.1.1 has been released which will improve the performance of older models. Owners of iPhone 4s and newer should benefit from the update along with owners of the iPad 2 and newer models. In addition to the new iOS update, Apple also released an update for OS X Yosemite 10.10.1

    The new mobile
operating system update addresses complaints from older iPhone and iPad users who reported that the performance on their devices had been affected since the iOS 8 update. But aside from the improvement in performance, there isn’t much more to the new update aside from some bug fixes.

Meanwhile, the OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 update addresses a number of bug fixes and improves WiFi reliability. The full list of what the update brings is as follows:

    • Improves reliability when connecting to a Microsoft Exchange server
    • Resolves an issue that may prevent Mail from sending messages through certain email service providers
    • Addresses an issue prevents connecting to remote computers using Back to My Mac
    • Resolves an issue where sharing services, Notification Center widgets and Actions may not be available
    • Addresses an issue that could cause Notification Center settings to not be retained after a restart
    • Addresses an issue that might prevent the Mac App Store from displaying certain updates
    • Addresses an issue that could prevent some Mac mini computers from waking from sleep
    • Resolves an issue that might prevent Time Machine from displaying older backups
    • Addresses an issue that might prevent entering text in Japanese
    • Allows you to append search domains for partially qualified domain names when performing DNS lookups
    • Addresses an issue where the Mac App Store might offer an update to Apple Remote

Apple releases another Yosemite beta as Wi-Fi problems refuse to go away

Just over a couple of weeks after Apple released the first beta of Mac OS X Yosemite for developers since the official release, the company has come out with a second beta. It isn't yet clear whether the 10.10.2 update fixes the Wi-Fi problems that have been plaguing users for some time now.
Ever since Yosemite made its debut last month, users have reported various issues. Chief among them is that after installing the OS their Wi-Fi becomes extremely slow or unstable, dropping every few minutes.
The 10.10.1 beta claimed to enhance Wi-Fi reliability, among other improvements, and yielded a formal OS update released to the public last week. But it failed to fix the Wi-Fi problems and users continued to post complaints in Apple discussion forums, third-party sites, and other platforms.
As of writing, the longest running thread on the Apple Support site about the problem, which is titled "OSX Yosemite Wifi issues", has 1,368 replies, and has been viewed 278670 times.
