Consumers already bored of Apple’s watch

    Vapourware interest has peaked
It appears that Apple waited too long and relied too much on the press to keep interest in its iWatch vapourware product going. New research has showing that interest in the device has been falling faster than a free fall team of parachuting elephants who have forgotten to pack the key ingredient of their act.
The Tame Apple press is beside itself with worry as Apple does not like failure and it might not invite them to one of its press launches again unless people get enthusiastic about the watch again.
One tech press reporter seriously wrote “One would assume that ever since Apple announced the introduction of the Apple Watch, anticipation for the product would be steadily growing.”
Why would that be Sherlock? The longer Apple leaves it the more it will be out of date?
Investment firm Piper Jaffray asked 968 iPhone owners whether they were interested in purchasing an Apple Watch, and only seven percent said they planned to buy it. That figure is down from eight percent in September, when Apple first unveiled the product at its annual iPhone event. By the time the product is actually launched next year (maybe) that figure could drop even further.
Some analysts who have been drinking Apple’s Kool Aid, like Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research, have claimed that every iPhone user will also be an Apple Watch user. If Piper Jaffray’s figures prove right, GER should sack Chowdhry as a warning to other analysts who promote Apple at the expense of their company’s credibility.

Apple Watch to Launch in March (Report)

When he first announced the Apple Watch, CEO Tim Cook was somewhat evasive as to when the device would be available for consumers, only going so far as to say "early 2015." That timeframe just became a bit more narrow, as the watch could hit shelves by March, with in-store training starting in early to mid-February.
According to a report by 9to5Mac, a couple of employees from each Apple store may be sent to Apple's offices in California or Texas to receive first-hand training, which they would then disseminate to the rest of their staffs. There's plenty to learn about the watch, as it has a brand new interface and app ecosystem.
MORE: Apple Watch FAQ - Everything You Need To Know
At $349, the Apple Watch is pricier than Android Wear devices and the Pebble Steel, but it promises to combine a host of compelling features with an elegant design. It sports a unique digital crown for navigating the interface, a heart rate monitor and social features like sharing quick sketches or even your heartbeat.
Apple's first foray into wearables, the Apple Watch enters a rapidly expanding market that's still up for grabs. Although there are a dozen or so smartwatches on the market from Samsung, LG, Sony and others, none have yet to resonate with the masses. Apple's arrival could go a long way towards speeding adoption by the general public -- or at the very least raise awareness for the entire category.

Apple Watch already knocked off for $30

Problem is which is the knock off?
As might be expected, someone in China has projected a cheap and cheerful version of Apple's iWatch – the only problem is that since it has done it before Apple, which is really the knock off?

The Apple Watch is probably going to be in the shops in March, but according to Mashable a booth at CES 2015 a Chinese company by the name of Hyperdon was selling a wearable that looks the same.
The Tame Apple Press is furious claiming that it is a rip off and even runs an OS similar to that being used in the iWatch. What is worse is rather than several hundred dollars the knock off iWatch is $30.
It does more or less the same stuff. You can play music and make phone calls through the device. The rep at Hyperdon was also reported as saying that the watch is available for purchase via retailers in the US and China.
The issue here is – who is making the knock off? Hyperdon has got its product to the market first and at a reasonable price. Apple has not got a product out at all and if it does it will cost a fortune. It seems that by the time Jobs' Mob finally gets its first gen watch vapourware to the shops, Hyerdon and its ilk will be on the third or fourth generation.

Samsung might be in charge of building Apple’s S1 Watch processor

We already know that Samsung has started producing Apple’s A9 processors for this year’s round of iPhones and iPads but now it looks like Samsung will also be in charge of producing the S1 processors for the upcoming Apple Watch, which is rumored to launch in March.
According to Digitimes, the Korean company is preparing to build several thousa 12-inch wafers per month using a 28nm manufacturing process. The S1 chip will see DRAM, NAND Flash and the S1 CPU stacked on a single module. Samsung is only responsible for the S1 core on the module, rather than all of the components.

Additionally, it appears that some analysts have revised previous estimations on the amount of watches Apple will ship this year. Previous estimations suggested that Apple was expected to sell around 30 to 40 million this year, which has now been reduced to as low as ten million units.
This revision could be down to the late start in manufacturing, with just two to three months to go until the expected Apple Watch release date.

Apple Watch Edition gold 42mm 32GB with no band will cost around $2499

In what should come as a total lack of surprise, the larger Watch from Apple will be more expensive than the smaller Watch. Apple has said that the Watch pricing will start at around $349, but what about the larger versions of its wearable? BGR is reporting that the two variants, the 38mm and 42mm, will come with differing pricing, but they are guestimating the following prices:

    • Apple Watch Sport 38mm 8GB with one fluoroelastomer band: $349
    • Apple Watch Sport 42mm 8GB with one fluoroelastomer band: $449
    • Apple Watch stainless 38mm 16GB with no band: $549
    • Apple Watch stainless 42mm 16GB with no band: $649
    • Apple Watch Edition gold 38mm 32GB with no band: $2299
    • Apple Watch Edition gold 42mm 32GB with no band: $2499

I think we will see a small change between the prices and sizes too, but that gold edition is hitting scary territory. 99% of consumers will not spend that much money, but for those who are sitting in the 1% category, $2499 isn't too much to dump down on the first-generation Watch from Apple, right?

New iOS 8.2 Beta Includes Apple Watch References

Apple recently released a new beta of iOS 8.2, the next major release of iOS 8. Already people have been delving deep into the OS to see if they can find anything interesting, and indeed they have.
9to5Mac reports on new references to an ‘Apple Watch app’ that is to be used on iPhones to pair the phone with the watch. The reference can be seen in the Bluetooth settings of iOS 8.2.

It’s always been known that the Apple Watch will rely heavily on the iPhone for its activities, with a reference to a dedicated app appearing in an early preview of the watch from last September.
“Apple Watch users will install an Apple Watch app on their iPhone, which will be used to download apps onto the watch as well as likely manage Apple Watch settings. A user’s iPhone is also used to help with computational demands. Apple cleverly pushes a lot of processor needs to the phone in order to preserve Apple Watch battery life.”
The watch is scheduled to be launched in “Early 2015″, with rumours indicating that would be in the next few months.

Upcoming Apple Watch App Showcases How You’ll Be Able To Navigate It

Just today, 9to5Mac has posted a detailed overview of what they called the ‘companion’ app which will help users manage and control settings on the Apple Watch from their iPhones. It is quite similar to the Health app on iOS 8 too. The leak with screenshots covers everything what the app will propose from customizing notifications and a guide to arrange apps on Apple Watch home screen.
New Companion App Gives Complete Access To Apple Watch Customization

This app will play a vital role in regulating your Apple Watch from your iPhone. The app will have control over electing the contacts that display on the ‘Friends’ screen in the Watch, this will allow you to message quicker and have granulated control over the fitness feature in the device. Reminders will be received to stand up if the user has been sitting for an ample time, more than necessary and select if they want these updates to remind the them of their fitness progress. A weekly summary will also be exhibited to the user to stay in the desired shape.

The fact that the Apple Watch doesn’t feature a virtual keyboard means that you can choose your desired settings to either respond via voice dictation, audio recording or set templates as your preference for the incoming texts. However, a default way cannot be saved and you will have to choose every time you have to respond. The preference to messages will reflect of that of your iPhone and can also be set to precisely customize for your Apple Watch. For instance, you can customize your Watch to display text messages from your contacts alone rather than every incoming text message.
In addition, the screenshots approve that Apple Watch will have its own usable storage for music, pictures and built in apps. The accessibility preferences are also provided by Apple and just like the iPhone and iPad, the Watch will contain a four-digit password lock. You can also unlock your Apple Watch, when your iPhone is near it. It is expected that the Apple Watch will be launched the alongside the iOS 8.2 update in early 2015. Lets hope that turns out to be true. Stay tuned.

    Meet the original Apple watch

Not exactly revolutionary, this now-collectors item is a watch that was given to Mac customers back in 1995 as a way to help convince them to upgrade their OS. Originally a straight forward give-away, this item now fetches a pretty penny if sold online thanks to its history and now apparent rarity.

Jonathan Morrison from TechFast brought one along to CES and showed it off to various technology media companies, displaying it's beautiful lack of features and interesting design qualities - looking like something possibly made for primary school children.

Don't be surprised if you see this design set as an optional new face for the latest Apple iWatch release.

Apple Watch battery life is going to iSuck, 3.5 hours of standard use

One of the big parts that Apple left out of its Watch unveiling last year was the battery life, something that is shaping up to be more than lackluster. Sources familiar with the device have told 9to5Mac that Watch users can expect just 3.5 hours of battery life with standard use, and just 2.5 hours of heavy use.

Watch will be powered by Apple's S1 processor, which should have the same type of performance as its A5 processor that is powering the current iPod touch. Watch will be running a cut down version of iOS codenamed SkiHill that will be providing content to a Retina-class display that will be pushing content out at 60FPS. If the Watch is being used with its built-in fitness tracking software, users can expect around four hours of battery life.

Mixed use of the Apple Watch has battery life at around 19 hours, and during standby and low-power modes, Watch users can expect around 203 days of use from a single charge. Battery life has been a big problem for Apple, which is reportedly one of the big reasons behind the company delaying Watch from last year, to this year.

Apple Watch has great potential, but smartwatches may be too gimmicky

The Apple Watch is expected to hit the market sometime this spring, and analysts believe it's going to be a major seller - quickly becoming the most popular smartwatch. More than 40 million smartwatches and fitness bands will be sold in 2015, according to CCS Insight, and that number is going to be boosted by the Watch's release.

Both smartwatches and fitness trackers may have received a lukewarm reception in 2014, and trying to keep people using their wearables will be a major challenge - but Apple will be ready to support app developers, hoping they make wearable-centric offerings.

"Apple has access to the best developers in the world, so they've given them all the tools they need to make apps for the Apple Watch, and they will now be having a beauty contest with all of those developers, saying come and show us what you've done," stated Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight. "Then out of those thousands of apps they can pick five knock-out ones that really make the Watch sing, and use them to bring it to life."

Analyst claims the Apple Watch will go on sale this March

According analyst Ming Chi Kuo from KGI Securities, Apple's long-awaited smartwatch will go on sale in just over one month, citing possible component shortages as a likely issue alongside commenting that 5 million devices should be sold within the first quarter of 2015.

Although no official launch date has been announced, the Watch was officially shown to the world in September, with Apple telling us to expect a full release in early 2015. Kuo has also made note that other analyst reports have also claimed a March release - so it's nothing completely ground-breaking or new.

Apple still has to release some information on the watch, including the battery and pre-order details, claims Kuo. Apple have stated that this new device will require charging daily, however no other information has been leaked.

Touching on the component issues, Kuo claims that Apple may encounter supply issues - however he expects them to sell 2.8 million devices in March alone, making up for a 5 million total number within the first quarter of 2015. He also has stated that he expects iPhone shipments for this same period to tip over 61 million units with iPad's following with 10 million.

Apple: Apple Watch will ship in April

Apple announced on Tuesday during its earning call that it will start commercial shipments of its highly-anticipated Apple Watch device in April. While the company will start shipments of its new gadget later than expected, its management believes that the new product will become popular both among end-users and among developers.
“Development of Apple Watch is right on schedule and we expect to begin shipping in April,” said Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, during a conference call with investors and financial analysts. “Developers are hard at work on apps, notifications and information summaries that we call Glances, all designed specifically for the Watch’s user interface.”
Apple Watch is based on the S1 system-on-chip that sports application processor, memory and various interfaces. The device is able to run various applications specifically designed for it as well as work as a health and fitness tracker. Two versions of Apple Watch – smaller and bigger – will be available. The most affordable Apple Watch – the Watch Sport – will cost $349. Versions made of stainless steel will cost up to $1000, whereas golden Watch Edition will cost several thousands of dollars.

Apple seems to pin a lot of hopes on Watch. Unfortunately, the company officially does not reveal expectations concerning sales of the product. Independent analysts predict that Apple will sell millions of its smartwatch this year.
“My expectations are very high on [Apple Watch],” said Mr. Cook. “I am using it every day, and loving it, and I cannot live without it.”
According to Apple’s management, software developers are eager to design programs for the Apple Watch platform.
“I see we are making great progress on the developer side,” said the CEO of Apple. “We are seeing some incredible innovation coming out there.”

Apple is asking some developers to prepare Watch apps for mid-February

Apple is preparing for the launch of its first wearable next month, requesting some of its developers to have their Watch apps ready by mid-February for the big launch.

The company is asking their high profile app developers and close partners to have their Watch-compatible iPhone apps ready to go in the App Store by the middle of February. Even though Watch isn't due until April, Apple is most likely wanting to get things prepared with plenty of time left for testing. Not only that, the apps could be used for promotional material, something we can expect Apple to push in the very near future.

Apple Stores Will Install Custom Safes To Cut Down On Apple Watch Theft

Apple has yet to reveal pricing information for the high-end versions of its Apple Watch products (only the entry-level Sport edition has been priced; it will set you back $349), though like most of the company's products, we'd be surprised if these wrist wearables didn't carry premium price tags. That will undoubtedly be true of the 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition, which Apple's retail stores will shove in safes every evening.

According to 9To5Mac, these will be custom designed lock boxes with MagSafe chargers inside so that the Apple Watches will be fully charged the next morning. That's important, as Apple will allow customers to demo the wearables, including the more expensive gold versions, during open hours. These safes are already being installed in various retail locations as they prepare for an anticipated April launch.

Higher price tags and added security measures won't be the only things that separate the gold edition Apple Watches from their less expensive stainless steel and aluminum counterparts. The gold versions will have a special sales process designed to differentiate them from the regular line of wearables, part of which will entail weighing them on special scales to determine the exact amount of gold in each one.

Whether or not the weight affects the price isn't known, though another reason for the scales is to make sure that returns or replacements come back fully intact -- by measuring the watches beforehand, Apple can determine if a buyer removed any gold.

The scales also hint at there being quite a bit of gold in these wearables, which some expect to run thousands of dollars.

Tim Cook on Apple Watch: Fighting the 'New Cancer'

The Apple Watch may be the most eagerly anticipated gadget of the year, but it also has a lot of doubters, who say the $350 device is too pricey or that the design is clunkier than that of the Moto 360. Or, the critics may just be down on the smartwatch category altogether.
But, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the Apple Watch possesses several unique strengths, including a variety of designs, Siri integration and, yes, the ability to fight "the new cancer": sitting. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference yesterday (Feb. 10) in San Francisco, Cook likened today's smartwatches to early MP3 players before the iPod came along.
"We weren't the first company to make an MP3 [player]," Cook said. "They were fundamentally too hard to use, and the user interface was really bad."

Cook was clearly drawing parallels to today's smartwatches. Android Wear devices, for example, involve a fair amount of swiping to get things done. The Pebble Watch, which uses a somewhat awkward button-based interface, is now on more than a million wrists, but that doesn't impress Cook.
"There are several things that are called 'smartwatches' that are shipping," he said, "but I'm not sure you could name any."
So how does Apple plan to shake up the market? By "changing the way you live your life," Cook said. And that could include saving it. Apple's CEO told conference attendees that the Apple Watch will give you a little tap 10 minutes before the hour if you haven't moved within the hour. Why?
"Because a lot of doctors believe that sitting is the new cancer, right?" Cook said.
Multiple studies have shown that prolonged sitting significantly raises have the risk of dying from heart disease or cancer -- even if you otherwise exercise. Apple's CEO said a lot of his employees who use the watch are now standing up and moving around at 10 minutes before the hour. In addition, the Apple Watch has the ability to track your activity and exercise.
That's not all the Apple Watch will do for health. Dexcom's upcoming Apple Watch app, for instance, will be able to help diabetes patients report glucose levels on a graph by working with a tiny monitor that's inserted under the skin. The app has already been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
Cook believes that the app selection for the Apple Watch will separate it from its competition, just as the iPhone's giant app library did in the smartphone space.
"The things third parties are working on? I'm super excited about," Cook shared. "Just like when the App Store came out, and you remember the tagline, 'There's an app for that' and the way you felt with your favorite apps ... You're going to have a feeling like that."

It's not as if other smartwatch platforms are standing still. At last count, there were nearly 200 Android Wear apps in the Google Play store, 4,200 Pebble apps and watch faces and more than 1,000 Tizen-based apps.
With Google I/O coming up in May, we expect to see many more enhancements for the Android Wear platform in general, as well as new designs to battle the Apple Watch. Pebble, too, has promised new hardware and software for this year.
However, Cook seems confident that the Apple Watch will rise above the competition, and will be much more than a novelty.
"There's just an enormous number of things that it will do," Cook said, "and I think you're going to find it something that you're going to think, 'Wow, I can't live without this anymore!'"
