New Profile on Jony Ive Reveals New Watch Details and More

The New Yorker has published a lengthy profile of Apple’s SVP of Design, Jony Ive. The profile is an unprecedented look into the professional and private life of the man largely deemed to be the spiritual successor of Steve Jobs.
Among a host of interesting tidbits, we see some details concerning the Apple Watch, including how early prototypes struggled with the device’s new ‘glances’ feature.
“The Apple Watch is designed to remain dark until a wearer raises his or her arm. In the prototypes worn around the Cupertino campus at the end of last year, this feature was still glitchy. For Marc Newson, it took three attempts—an escalation of acting styles, from naturalism to melodrama—before his screen came to life.”
There’s also new details regarding Apple’s choices for the larger screen sizes of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus – devices they’d been working on since 2011.
“A few years ago, Ive and his colleagues assessed each prototype size of the future iPhone 6 by carrying them around for days. “The first one we really felt good about was a 5.7,” he recalled. “And then, sleeping on it, and coming back to it, it was just ‘Ah, that’s way too big.’ And then 5.6 still seems too big.” (As Cook described that process, “Jony didn’t pull out of his butt the 4.7 and the 5.5.”)”
Interestingly, Ive also touches on car design and his disapproval of the look of many vehicles on the road today. Notable due to the recent rumours concerning Apple potentially building a car.
“To his right was a silver sedan with a jutting lower lip. Ive said, quietly, “For example.” As the disgraced car fell behind, I asked Ive to critique its design: “It is baffling, isn’t it? It’s just nothing, isn’t it? It’s just insipid.” He declined to name the model, muttering, “I don’t know, I don’t want to offend.” (Toyota Echo.)”
The profile is a terribly intriguing read, giving deep insights into Apple and Ive, unlike many profiles written before it.

Apple ordered up to 6 million smartwatches, preparing for launch

Apple is anticipating big demand for its Apple Watch smartwatch, asking Asian suppliers to prepare five to six million units ready for launch in April. The company will release three models and wants to ensure there is adequate stock of each one.

At least half of the production numbers will be for the Apple Sport, the company's entry-level smartwatch model, though production plans can be adjusted as needed.

The high-end Apple Watch Edition has seen small pre-orders to date, but Apple will produce at least one million units per month during Q2, according to sources. The watch has an 18-karat gold casing and could be extremely popular in China, as Apple products have become increasingly popular there as of late.

The smartwatch market has become even more crowded over the past year, but analysts expect the Apple Watch to take the lead - and help drive even more interest towards smartwatches and wearables.

Apple invites third-party developers to its headquarters to help finish up Apple Watch apps

Apple has invited several third-party developers to its headquarters in Cupertino, California to help them finish and test their Apple Watch apps, according to a 9to5mac report. The company has plans to hold workshops for more than 100 different developers throughout February.
The invited developers range from those behind titles for sports applications to productivity software, asked to travel to Cupertino on an urgent timeline and suggesting that the company is readying the apps for marketing the smartwatch or an upcoming media event. Tim Cook recently confirmed that Apple Watch will be released in April.
Developers so far have been impressed with the smartwatch's Digital Crown feature -- that Apple claims lets you magnify content, scroll through lists and messages, and make selections, all without obstructing the screen. However, they said that Force Touch, which allows the wearable to distinguish pressure of touch and respond with different control options accordingly, takes time to get used to.
The report also notes that the tech giant has held meetings with banks to work on WatchKit apps that assist with the smartwatch’s Apple Pay functionality.

Sensor Reliability Issues Sidelined Advanced Health Monitoring On Apple Watch

The Apple Watch is one of the most highly anticipated consumer electronics device launches set for this spring. Although Apple sought to bring the smartwatch to consumer in early 2015, Apple CEO Tim Cook clarified last month that the device will actually land sometime in April.

We already know quite a bit about what the Apple Watch can do. We know that it will mainly serve as a secondary display for your iPhone (which will power most of its functions) and will display incoming notifications, quickly give you easily digestible bits of information (stock quotes, weather, calendar events, etc.), track your heart rate, and provide fitness monitoring. Oh, and by the way, it also happens to tell time -- one of the few functions that it can carry out without being wirelessly tethered to your iPhone.

The Wall Street Journal is now giving us a bit of insight into what had to be left out when it comes to the Apple Watch’s long gestation period, during which it was referred to a “black hole” that sucked up company resources. Apple had originally planned for its first smartwatch to incorporate an even larger array of sensors aimed at health monitoring.

Sensors that monitor skin conductivity would have allowed for accurate heart rate monitoring via electrocardiogram. But early testing showed inconsistent results for subjects with hairy arms or dry skin. Apple also garnered inconsistent results from sensors used to detect blood pressure and blood oxygen levels.

And Apple also had to come to grips with how it would gather and display such information to customers. If Apple planned to give advice to its users based on the information captured via its sensors, it might have to answer to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory agencies.

As with any feature that is left out in order to bring a product to market in a timely fashion, its possible that the above functionality could make it into a second generation Apple Watch. And perhaps advances in battery technology could also allow for a device that can last longer than a day per charge and rely less on an iPhone for processing duties.

CCS Insight: Apple Watch will sell 20 million units by end of 2015

Apple will be able to rack up 20 million Apple Watch units sold by the end of the year, according to the CCS Insight analyst group.

Even though an estimated 7 percent of iPhone owners with devices able to support the watch plan to buy the wearable, Apple can expect to quickly become the leading smartwatch maker. If Apple successfully sells 20 million units by the end of the year, the company would control almost one-quarter of the wearable market.

"This highly anticipated smartwatch will create a frenzy of demand, catapulting it almost instantaneously to be the most successful smartwatch ever," according the report. "The current love affair affluent US consumers have with the iPhone guarantees a strong start for the Apple Watch in its home market."

Leading up to the launch of the Apple Watch in April, analysts are likely going to predict a wide range of different sales estimates. Even if the company doesn't come close to the 20-million unit prediction, the Apple Watch has already created renewed interest in the wearables market.

Apple Watch Edition To Reportedly Contain At Least $800 Worth Of 18-Karat Gold

As we approach the launch date of the Apple Watch (pegged for sometime during the month of April according to Apple CEO Tim Cook), more and more details about the smartwatch are starting to pour out. Just this week we’ve learned that the Apple Watch was originally supposed to include a bevy of health-focused sensors, but were dropped from the production model due to reliability issues. We also learned that Apple will reportedly have six million units on hand for the April launch, with 50 percent, 33 percent, and 17 percent of production going to the Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch, and the oddly named Apple Watch Edition respectively.

It’s the Apple Watch Edition that is the subject of discussion today; or more specifically, its use of 18-karat gold. Luma Labs co-founder Greg Koenig has given some rough estimates of just how much gold will go towards producing a 42mm Apple Watch Edition (it will also be available in a 38mm version).

Based on an average wall thickness of 1.1mm, Koenig reckons that the body of the 42mm smartwatch will feature 1.02 ounces or 29.16 grams of 18-karat gold. At today’s prices, the amount of gold in the body alone would amount to $853.82. And that price doesn’t take into account the crown and the side button, or the gold clasps seen on certain bands available for the Apple Watch Edition.
Once you add in the price of the sapphire crystal display cover, internal components, and Apple’s typical markup, it’s no wonder that the folks from Cupertino are reportedly installing custom safes in Apple Retail Stores to ward of thieves.
If an Apple Watch Edition, which will likely run into the thousands of dollars at retail level, is too rich for your blood, the $349 Apple Watch Sport will be constructed of “lowly” aluminum and strengthened Ion-X glass.

18K Gold ‘Apple Watch Edition’ To Cost At Least $10K Says Prominent Apple Blogger

When Apple's the focal-point of a new product launch, I don't think many people ever expect that the product is going to be priced competitively. Apple has long been able to charge some nice premiums on its products because many who buy them believe that they're worth it. Thus, when a product like the Apple Watch finally hits retail, it'd seem safe to believe that it's not going to beat anyone else on price.

While we're not sure of what the pricing is actually going to be until launch, what we do know is that the special 'Edition' models are going to enter Apple into a brand-new luxury territory. According to respected blogger John Gruber, the price of those babies could reach $10,000 easily. Even better: some could reach $20,000, if the configuration is right.
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...tion_Watch.jpg
$10,000 for an Apple Watch might sound a little insane, but bear in mind that these are not ordinary watches. As you can see on the official product page, the Edition watches are decked out in high-end materials, including 18-karat gold. It's a little hard for me to consider a computerized watch as "sexy", but I think Apple has really hit the mark on these.
Through his blog, John relays his experience from the Apple Watch announcement event. There, he met up with friend Vincent Nguyen, SlashGear's EiC, who said that the highest-end Apple Watch could cost $20,000. John at first thought that was impossible, but after doing a lot of research (in effect, becoming a watch guru along the way), he came to agree. Originally, he said that $5,000 would be likely, but now he wholeheartedly believes he was off by at least 100%.
After doing his research, John came to the conclusion that Apple is likely to separate its Watch series into five different tiers. The first would be Entry, which would include a basic sport band. Moving up would convert the band to leather. At the third tier, you'd get a watch with the neat Milanese design (seen left, below), while at tier four, you'd get deluxe leather. And tier five, a link bracelet - a common feature of high-end watches.
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...le_Watches.jpg
While it's hard to come up with estimates, John believes the Apple Watch (stainless steel) could cost $700, while the bump up to leather could likewise bump the price to $1,000. Yup - a little expensive for a watch, but those are cheap in comparison to the more luxurious models. John wouldn't be surprised if the Milanese-banded watches cost about $15,000, and the gold link bracelets, $20,000.
Interestingly, what strikes me most about all of this isn't the fact that the watches are set to be so expensive, but rather that there is so much variety in the styles. That's a stark contrast to what we talked about earlier this week, where Apple's lead designer Jony Ive slammed Motorola for giving end-users too much choice. I guess things change when we're talking about products that cost into the tens of thousands, though.

Apple Watch could support 100,000 apps at launch

The Apple Watch could launch with a huge amount of software support, as 100,000 apps could end up being available for the wearable when it launches in April, according to new reports. While Apple has yet to publicly speak on the range of software set to be available for its first wearable, analysts are predicting a strong software lineup on day one.
According to Trip Chowdhry, who works for Global Equities Research, the Apple Watch app ecosystem will instantly outstrip that of Android Wear. This isn’t a totally random number either, the figure has been deduced from attending six Apple Watch-kit events over the last few months.

It is also estimated that the $349 price tag won’t put too many off from buying the Apple Watch due to wide-spread development support. In a note to clients, the analyst wrote “By April 10th 2015, we are expecting 100,000 Apple Watch Apps on AppStore”.
“Currently, on an average there are 65 Apps per iPhone. We are estimating that an average Apple Watch will have 100 Apps per Apple Watch. There will be no single killer app for Apple Watch – each user will have their own set of Killer Apps…one way to think is that the consumer is getting 100 different devices in one Apple Watch.”
He then goes on to praise the Apple Watch and its framework. Apple has supposedly thought things through very well, making the Apple Watch a seamless integration in to the iOS ecosystem.

Apple Watch is Waterproof, Apple Pay in Europe “By End of Year”

Tim Cook has seemingly been on a tour of Germany recently. Over the last few days, we’ve seen reports showing him visiting various places in the country. His visit began with the announcement that the company is to build two giant 100% renewable data centres in Europe, all as part of an investment worth $2 Billion. Just the other day, he was seen at a glass factory in the country, seeing glass that is to be used on Apple’s new campus. Yesterday he visited a local Apple Store, and some employees from that store gathered new information about the watch and Apple Pay.
iGen reports that employees in the store asked about Tim’s experience with the new device and he said that he wears it all the time and “even in the shower.” We’ve known all along that the Apple Watch is water resistant to a degree, but not that it could be used in the shower. The innards of the device are said to be encapsulated inside a special resin that provides the water resistance.
As for Apple Pay, he told the employees that the service, which has been successful in the US, will arrive in Europe “by the end of the year.” This has surprised some, as reports have suggested that banks and other organisations have been finalising deals recently. Most of those reports concerned UK banks however, so it will likely be a staggered launch, covering most of Europe at least “by the end of the year”.
Cook also visited German Chanellor Angela Merkel as part of his visit, which has now seemingly ended, as he’s since been spotted in Israel, meeting with the President of the country.

Apple Watch Event Slated for March 9

When it comes time to set your clocks forward an hour next month, it may also be time to order an Apple Watch. The Cupertino company today (Feb. 26) sent out media invites to an event on March 9, with the words "Spring Forward" in it.
The hidden message in this invite could not be clearer: the Apple Watch may finally be ready for the public. First announced last year at the iPhone 6 event, the Apple Watch has since been given an April ship date.
MORE: Apple Watch FAQ: Everything You Need to Know
We expect Apple to provide more details on Apple Watch models and pricing for the different versions. So far we only know the $350 price for the base model, which is more expensive than some Android Wear devices.
The Apple Watch will pack a full range of features, including a full-color Retina display, heart rate monitor and Apple Pay support, so you can make payments with just a tap of your wrist. Apple will also show off some of the first apps for its watch at the March 9 event, which will be key to getting shoppers excited about this device.
Unique to the Apple Watch is a new digital crown for navigating the interface and the ability to perform different actions based on a tap or deep press. Other functions are more novel than vital, such as the ability to sketch notes to loved ones from your wrist or share your heartbeat with other Apple Watch wearers.
The smartwatch wars are definitely heating up. Pebble just announced the Pebble Time, which offers a color ePaper display and 5 to 7 days of battery life (more than the expected 1 to 2 for the Apple Watch). And LG is prepping a new watch with LTE built in. Then there are Android Wear devices like the Moto 360.
We hope to get a lot more details at Apple's event, and we'll be there live to bring you our updated impressions.

Tim Cook: Apple Watch could replace car keys for newer vehicles

Apple CEO Tim Cook hopes to see the Apple Watch become integrated into the daily lifestyles of iPhone owners, including even replacing car keys and large fobs. Cook didn't offer additional details while speaking with The Telegraph in a recent interview.

Apple Pay, the leading mobile payments service, will also be utilized to support the Apple Watch - and Cook promised that Apple won't track consumer payments, product purchases, or where they are shopping.

The wearables market was already growing, but the expected April launch of the Apple Watch will help accelerate interest. Cook said the Apple Watch's battery life will last an entire day, and will charge faster than an iPhone - still a shorter time than other smartwatches, though Apple believes consumers will recharge in a similar fashion as daily smartphone recharging.

Apple Watch Boutiques Coming to Luxury Stores in London and Paris

Apple is seemingly building pop-up boutiques in luxury Parisian and London stores. One store is expected to open in Paris’ Galeries Lafayette and London’s Selfridges store. Mac4Ever spotted signs of construction in the Parisian store, while a number of job opportunities have appeared for Apple Store employees in London.
A section of Selfridges Wonder Room has been boarded up recently, suggesting that the 19,000-square-foot hall will be the location of Apple’s store-within-a-store. The Wonder Room is a focal point for watch and jewellery brands, making it suitable for Apple’s latest product. The rumours are in line with Apple’s intentions for the watch, that it is a fashion-centric product, designed to be both technologically advanced as well as something you might wish to wear.
The watch is due to be available in April, with Apple holding an event next Monday to potentially reveal more details about the device.

Apple Watch has ‘Power Reserve’ Mode, Prototypes Disguised as Samsung Watches

The New York Times has published some new details about the upcoming Apple Watch. They suggest that the new device will have a ‘Power Reserve’ mode that keeps the clock face running even with minimal battery power left.
The news comes at a time when many are wondering just how long the device’s battery life will be. Apple itself has only suggested that it will need to be charged nightly, while rumours have pointed to a couple of hours being the time it will stay active. It’s worth pointing out however that these rumoured times are only under standard use conditions, in that the watch will only be in full use very briefly throughout the day. The device uses a mechanism that switches the display on only when you raise your wrist. If true, it appears that Apple is trying to ensure that it maintains its basic time-telling function for as long as possible.
There’s also some other tidbits of information from the article, such as the fact that Apple disguised the watch as a Samsung Galaxy Gear while in development. This is not uncommon for the company, as they’ve been known to do this with iPhones, most famously with the stolen iPhone 4 that was “left” in a bar back in 2010.
The Apple Watch will be released in April, with Apple holding an event next Monday to reveal further details.

Apple Watch already wins prestigious design award

Before it's even on the market, the watch wins gold in the 2015 iF Design Awards. The next challenge will be to see if it can win the battle for consumers'

The Apple Watch isn't even for sale, yet it's already won a major award.
The upcoming smartwatch has been lauded by winning gold in the 2015 iF Design Awards. Given out every year since 1954 by the Germany-based iF International Forum Design, the awards -- gold in particular -- are considered prestigious honors in the design community as judges must pick the top products from among 2,000 entries and a variety of categories.
The Apple Watch won't be available to consumers until April, but Apple is expected to reveal more details about the device, including a specific launch date, at an event scheduled for Monday. Spearheaded by Apple designer Jony Ive, the watch will come in three varieties with a range of bands available. The entry-level Sport model will start at $349, while the top-of-the-line Apple Watch Edition could sell for $4,999 and higher, according to predictions from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.
The Apple Watch will be part smartwatch and part fitness and activity tracker, a combination the company is counting on to bring in buyers. But by offering the watch in a luxury edition, Apple is also presenting it as a piece of fine jewelry to further distinguish it from rival products.
It will be entering a crowded field of wearables clamoring for a place on consumers' wrists, the latest round of which were unveiled at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona this week. Among the crop of smartwatches were the Android-powered Huawei Watch, which brings a classic round watch shape to a set of devices that's been dominated by boxier designs, and the Pebble Time Steel, whose sensor-based bands and metallic construction up the ante on the plastic Pebble Time announced just a week earlier.
Other companies already in the smartphone fray include Samsung, Microsoft, Motorola, Sony and LG.
One advantage that Android-based smartwatches could have over the Apple Watch is that by and large they are less expensive. But to date, smartwatches have yet to really capture consumers' enthusiasm or much in the way of their dollars. Some limiting factors -- they often rely heavily on being a complement to a mobile phone, and typically have much shorter battery life than traditional watches.
