    Apple Watch

Cá fica um rumor muito interessante

Apple Watch is upgradeable, S1 system-in-package in switchable – rumour

When Apple introduced its Watch family of smart-watches back in September, it emphasized that the devices were powered by the S1 system-in-package (SiP), which is completely encapsulated in resin to protect the electronics from the elements, impact, and wear. While Apple did not disclose a lot of information about the S1 SiP, its look reveals that it has an application processor (that integrates dynamic random access memory), a custom NAND flash storage chip, a variety of sensors and special-purpose chips, wireless connectivity as well as various I/O and power ICs (integrated circuits). Apple itself calls the S1 as “an entire computer system on a single chip.”
At present, nothing particular is known about the capabilities of the S1 SiP, but the fact that it integrates so lot of various hardware blocks indicates that it could be very powerful and feature-rich. Given the fact that the evolution of electronics is very rapid these days, the S1 SiP could power a smartphone several years ago. The problem is that no matter how good the S1 is, the S2 will inevitably be better and will therefore make all S1-based devices outdated once it is released.
According a report from Forbes, which cites industry insiders, “the case of Apple’s Watch could spring open, and will not be hermetically sealed like the iPhone.” The fact that the device is not hermetically sealed was confirmed by Apple when it said that the Watch is protected against splashes and dust, but is not water-resistant. It is reported that users will be able to remove the S1 SiP and replace it when Apple introduces new system-in-package, which will give the Watch a longer lifespan, critical to buyers of expensive models.
In a bid to ensure future upgradeability, Apple needed to create a platform with a battery, buttons, touch-screen and optical heart rate sensor (that uses infrared and visible-light LEDs and photodiodes to detect one’s heart rate) that was not going to change over time. Technologically, it should not be too hard to do, but the obvious problem is that both battery and display degrade over time, which affects user experience.

Apple is clearly not a fan of upgrades. Its smartphones and tablets still do not feature card readers and sport batteries that cannot be removed by the end-users. Therefore, it will be a huge surprise if Apple actually allows the end-user to upgrade Watch or Watch Edition timepieces themselves.

Apple diz que espera contruir ente 30 e 40 milhões de relogios.

[QUOTE] It appears that Apple has high expectations for the Apple Watch if rumors are to believed. According to Taiwan-based web publication Digitimes, Apple has ordered enough chips to produce around 30 to 40 million units of its first ever smartwatch.

According to unnamed industry sources, the website also claimed that the Apple Watch is set to debut in early 2015. While Apple has said that the smartwatch would
launch in 2015, it has never said anything more specific than that. However, rumors have also been circulating that Apple is looking to release its smartwatch as soon as possible.

The chip being ordered, that Apple will be utilizing for its product, is an advanced system-in-package (SiP) technology capable of incorporating an entire computing system into one chip. It is a custom designed S1 SiP that is able to stack and integrate multiple subsystems into a small enough area that makes it capable of conforming to a a smartwatch's small footprint.

Apple Releases WatchKit For App Developers Ahead Of Apple Watch Launch

When the iPhone was first released back in 2007, it took Apple about a year before it opened up the platform to third-party developers. This time, Apple Watch users and developers won’t have to wait until after the device has been launched. Apple has released the WatchKit for app devs ahead of its new device’s release date which is expected in early 2015.

WatchKit will provide developers with the tools needed to develop apps designed specifically for the Apple Watch. WatchKit apps will have two parts; the first is the WatchKit extension that will run on the iPhone while the second part is the set of user interface resources that will be installed on the watch itself. According to Apple’s press release, “When your app is launched on Apple Watch, the WatchKit extension on iPhone runs in the background to update the user interface and respond to user interactions.”

The current set of developer tools, which is available in the beta build of Xcode 6.2, will also support the creation of Notifications, Glances, and native Apple Watch Apps. Notifications are simply notifications sent from the phone to the watch, Glances provide snippets of information, and the native apps will contain a full user interface that doesn’t have to rely on information from the external phone app.

Apple Seeds iOS 8.2 With WatchKit SDK for Apple Watch Apps to Developers

Apple today announced that its set of WatchKit development tools are now available for developers, allowing them to begin creating apps and software for the company’s upcoming Apple Watch.
“Apple Watch is our most personal device ever, and WatchKit provides the incredible iOS developer community with the tools they need to create exciting new experiences right on your wrist,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With the iOS 8.2 beta SDK, developers can now start using WatchKit to create breakthrough new apps, Glances and actionable notifications designed for the innovative Apple Watch interface and work with new technologies such as Force Touch, Digital Crown and Taptic Engine.”
WatchKit is being released as part of the iOS 8.2 and Xcode 6.2 beta, both of which have been made available to developers today.

Both the iOS 8.2 Beta with WatchKit and the Xcode 6.2 beta can be downloaded from Apple’s developer site, which also has Apple Watch development resources for developers. WatchKit can currently be used to create Glances, actionable notifications, and Apple Watch apps that are powered by the iPhone. Many Apple Watch apps will be driven by code that runs on the iPhone, with a UI that displays content on the watch itself. According to Apple, “fully native” Apple Watch apps can be created “later next year.”
As described by Apple, actionable notifications are notifications that allow users to take an action or respond directly from their wrists with the Apple Watch, turning off the lights when they’ve left the house, for example, or accessing flight information at an airport. Glances are somewhat simpler, aiming to give users quick information at a glance like news, weather, sports scores, and more.
In its press release, Apple highlights several developers who have already begun working with WatchKit, giving some additional insight into how the WatchKit tools can be used. The ESPN app for Apple Watch delivers live scores and information on teams, according to ESPN VP John Kosner, and it offers snapshots of live games through Glances and alerts on score changes through actionable notifications.
Instagram has used WatchKit to develop actionable notifications that let users instantly like a photo or respond with an emoji, plus there’s an Instagram news and watch list to let users see their friends favorite photos and get an overview of likes and comments. American Airlines has used Apple Watch to create pre-trip notifications, updates for gate changes, gate connection information, and alerts when a flight begins boarding, all of which can be accessed directly from the wrist.
In addition to sharing these use cases for the Apple Watch, Apple has also created a dedicated Apple Watch site for developers, outlining the difference between full apps, Glances, and actionable notifications, offering download links to the iOS 8.2 beta with WatchKit SDK, and providing design guidelines and templates.

    Apple Watch Screen Resolutions: 312 x 390 for 42mm Version, 272 x 340 for 38mm Version

With the WatchKit SDK now in the hands of developers, some new information about Apple’s wearable device is coming out, including its display resolution, which was not previously disclosed by Apple.
According to Apple’s human interface guidelines, the two separate Apple Watch models have different screen resolutions. The smaller 38mm Apple Watch has a resolution of 272 x 340, while the larger 42mm Apple Watch has a resolution of 312 x 390. In the WatchKit documentation, Apple refers to the Apple Watch display as “Retina,” and instructs developers to use 2x image assets.

Apple directs developers to provide image assets for different screen sizes “as needed.” Developers can use the same image resources as long as they “look good on both screen sizes,” but if not, developers will need to provide separate image resources for both devices. Content displayed on Apple Watch “should be the same regardless of the device’s screen size,” and Apple says developers should “let items expand or contract naturally” to fill available space.
Icons on the Apple Watch will have variable sizes based on screen size and type. For example, the Notification Center icon should be 29 pixels for the 38mm Apple Watch, and 36 pixels for the 42mm Apple Watch. A home screen icon on the smaller device should be 172 pixels, while a home screen icon for the larger Apple Watch should be 196 pixels.

In addition to unveiling information on the device’s resolution, Apple’s WatchKit guidelines give some insight into how Apple views the device. Apple asks developers to be mindful of certain concepts when creating content for the Apple Watch, including its deep personalization and connection to people via heart rate and activity monitoring.

Apple asks Samsung to make S1 processors for Apple Watch

Apple has been trying to cut its orders to Samsung Electronics for many years now, but when it comes to making ultra-low-power system-on-chips using a leading-edge process technology, in high volume and with high yield, Samsung is one of a few companies who can do the job. As a result, to produce an application processor for its Watch, Apple just has to deal with Samsung once again.
BusinessKorea reports that Apple contraced Samsung to supply APs for the Apple Watch, which is scheduled to be released early next year, citing sources familiar with the matter. The tiny application processor inside Apple’s S1 system-in-package (SiP) that will power the Watch devices has to be extremely energy efficient, yet, provide rather serious compute capabilities, a combination that requires both top-notch design as well as thin and low-power process technology.
Keeping in mind that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. designed its leading-edge 20nm manufacturing technology for general-purpose mobile system-on-chips, the fabrication process may not be tailored for ultra-low-power applications, such as Apple Watch. As a result, Apple might have decided to order production to Samsung Electronics, which has numerous ULP technologies, including 14nm FinFET manufacturing process.

Pois. Hoje em dia são poucas as empresas que têm sistemas de produção de topo de waffers. A Samsung, a Intel, a TSMC e a GF.

Apple Expected to Sell 30 Million Apple Watch Units in 2015 Alone

Apple is expected to launch its Watch sometime early next year, but there are some analysts already pegging some massive hopes on Apple’s first foray into the world of wearables. Some analysts expect the company to sell over 30 million Watch units in 2015 alone.
MacRumors reported on a survey conducted by UBS analysts, which reached a similar conclusion: with a poll showing that around 10% of respondents to the survey would “very likely” purchase an Apple Watch in 2015. UBS expects around 24 million Watch units to be sold in the first 9-12 months of the Apple Watch launching, with analysts also expecting the company to sell around 240 milion iPhones in the same 12-month period.
