Apple to spend some of its tax-free cash pile in EU

    Warning the tax inspectors

Fruity tax avoider Apple is going to spend some of its huge cash pile investing in the EU. This is probably because if it brings back any of its EU generated cash to the US it will be taxed, so it might as well spend it on something useful.

The UK Daily Telegraph claims that Apple is to invest €1.7bn in Europe apparently because " it needs to support a rapid growth in sales of products and apps that shows no sign of abating."
The reality is that it is investing in fields where it has yet to make much impact – data centres.
The company is to develop and open two new data centres in Europe, which will be built in County Galway, Ireland, and in Denmark. The Telegraph claims that the data centres will power Apple's online services, such as the iTunes and the App Store, but they are more likely to be required for Jobs' Mobs cloud plans.
The Telegraph claims that the money will be a "boost to the European economy and will create hundreds of jobs." Clearly ignoring the fact that once a data centre is built it only needs a dozen or so staff and a small dog called Colin.
In fact in the US some people have been questioning why Apple is getting tax concessions for its data centres when they actually employ so few people.
Tim Cook, chief executive of Apple, said: "We are grateful for Apple's continued success in Europe and proud that our investment supports communities across the continent. This significant new investment represents Apple's biggest project in Europe to date.
"We're thrilled to be expanding our operations, creating hundreds of local jobs and introducing some of our most advanced green building designs yet."
Alongside the investment, Apple has provided new details about its impact on the European economy.
The company said that in 2014 it spent more than €7.8bn with European companies and suppliers, such as chipmaker Arm, as it developed its products such as the iPhone and iPad.
Almost 672,000 jobs in Europe are supported by Apple, according to a report by the company. Of these jobs, 530,000 are linked to the development of apps for Apple's iOS operating system. Developers have earned more than €6.6bn in sales since the launch of the App Store in 2008.
And why is it doing all this? Apple is currently being investigated by the EU over its dodgy tax plans. Apple is sending a message to the EU that if it does not do what it is told, then Apple will take all its money away, and the EU will be without the fruity cult.
Of course, if Apple actually paid the full amount of tax in the EU it would probably be a lot more than the billion it will invest in a data centre. The data centre money will go towards making Apple money, while tax cash tends to go to helping the struggling European health service and education system.

Samsung gets Apple DRAM chip contract

    Your iPhone is a Samsung

It looks like Samsung has buried the hatchet with Apple and has gone back to the days when the iPhone was mostly made from its parts.

Samsung Electronics won contracts with LG Apple to supply DRAM chips for their new range of smartphones.
The deal is worth billions and marks the end of the days when Apple tried to depend on other suppliers to make its chips and DRAM.
Under the agreement, Samsung will start providing LG Electronics with 100 percent mobile DRAM chips it needs for LG G4 smartphone, which will be unveiled in April. Also, Samsung will handle at least half of the amount that Apple needs for its new iPhone 6S.
Apple may ask more from Samsung to supply the chips depending on the situation, he said.
Samsung Electronics' handset division also separately agreed with the company's semiconductor division to use its in-house mobile DRAM chips for the Galaxy S6.
Crying into its beer will be SK Hynix of which mainstream mobile DRAMs use 25-nanometer processing level technology.
Samsung began mass production of the next generation memory chip ? the 8-Gigabit LPDDR4 (low power double data rate) mobile DRAM with 20 nanometers.
The so-called LPDDR memory, the most used in mobile devices, is poised to enable a new technological leap for premium smartphones.
This new DRAM offers twice the density and performance compared to the LPDDR3 4-gigabit.
LG has confirmed that it will be using Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 processors and mobile DRAM chips and Apple will be using Samsung mobile processors that will be used to power the upcoming iPhone 6S which is to be released later this year.
For applications, Samsung will be responsible for 80 percent of the production of the A9 chipset, while TSMC will take care of the remaining 30 percent.
What this means practically is that while all the major smartphones on the market are badged to Apple, or LG or Samsung, they will all be running on the same parts. So while Apple or LG fanboys sing praises about their technology, they will be essentially be waving a rebadged Samsung phone at you. Apple spending €1.7 Billion on EU data centers running on renewable energy

Apple has announced that it plans to spend €1.7 Billion constructing two new data centers in Europe, which will run entirely on renewable energy and provide key online services such as iMessage, Siri and iTunes. One of the two centers will be located in Ireland while the other will be found in Denmark.
Both data centers are currently expected to be up and running by 2017. Apple CEO, Tim Cook, commented on the company’s new European investment, saying “We are grateful for Apple’s continued success in Europe and proud that our investment supports communities across the continent. This significant new investment represents Apple’s biggest project in Europe to date. We’re thrilled to be expanding our operations, creating hundreds of local jobs and introducing some of our most advanced green building designs yet.”

The data center being built-in Denmark will be Apple’s first in the country, each new center will measure 166,000 square meters, which Apple promises will deliver benefits to local communities. The Ireland location will have an outdoor education space and walking trails for local schools, Apple will also be replanting native trees in surrounding areas. In Denmark, local homes will be warmed by the extra heat produced by the servers.
This move bolsters Apple’s commitment to renewable energy and preserving the environment.

Apple Debuts New Ad During Oscars, Filmed Entirely on iPad

As per usual, Apple debuted a new ad during the Oscars last night. The company has for many years used a slot during the ceremony to show off a brand new ad. Well this year, Apple’s ad is all about movies of course, but movies made on the iPad in particular.
Martin Scorsese narrates the ad, with a message about filmmaking. But perhaps the most significant thing about this commercial, was that it was completely shot on the iPad. It’s fitting then that the ad is about making films with iPads, showing students tasked with producing a video utilising a number of iPad apps like iMovie and accessories such as iPad tripod mounts, to put the whole thing together.
It’s not the first time Apple has done such a thing – on January 24th last year Apple released an ad online celebrating 30 years since the Mac’s launch on January 24th 1984. That entire ad was filmed with the iPhone.
You can get a look at the latest ad below.

Apple is offering huge sums of money, bonuses to car battery experts

We've reported on Apple's car quite a few times, but things are becoming more real as the days flick over on the calendar. The New York Post is now reporting that Apple is offering some serious money and higher pay packages to secure car battery experts.

The New York Post has said that "Apple has been offering the best and the brightest in the car-battery field $250,000 signing bonuses plus salaries 60 percent higher than what they currently earn", something Tesla Motors CEO, founder and real-life Tony Stark, Elon Musk, said to Bloomberg Businessweek. Former Ford engineer Steve Zadesky is the boss of Apple's 'Project Titan', so there's some weight to the story, and to having Ford's former engineer working with Apple.

Marc Newson has also joined Apple, with The Post calling him "one of the more elegant engineers in the world" and is very close friends with Apple's design boss, Jony Ive. Zadesky on the other hand, has a huge 90 or so patents, and was the sole signatory on a 2010 business ocntract with a company called Liquidmetal. Liquidmetal is known for its Moldable Metal, or "Nanophosphate metal" which can be shaped like plastic. Apple, along with Liquidmetal, have filed 17 patents together, with 14 of those taking place in the last 12 months or so.

With this type of news breaking and Apple hiring as much of the top talent in the car battery, and associated industries, Apple could really shake the entire auto industry up with the release of its own car.

Apple, Google prepare to battle it out in connected car tech market

Google and Apple hope to see their respective in-car mobile operating systems have a major impact in the connected car market. Apple's CarPlay and Google's Android Auto go beyond just pairing smartphones to the infotainment system, hopefully designed to increase auto safety.

"Consumers have spoken," said John Maddox, assistant director at the University of Michigan's Mobility Transformation Center, in a statement to the New York Times. "They expect to have coordination between their phone and their vehicle."

Both companies want to improve Bluetooth connectivity and voice recognition functionality in connected cars. Automakers are creating working relationship with Google, Apple, and other Silicon Valley companies interested in developing in-car technology.

Automakers hope to learn from the tech industry, especially with voice recognition: "Many of the systems out there now in cars, the voice interface is almost unusable. It's inaccurate, people get frustrated and they'll just stop using it."

Why an Apple car is not going to happen

Why would it do something like that?
It is becoming obvious that the fruity cargo cult Apple is out of ideas and it defaulting to just copying other people, but one suggestion by the Tame Apple press – that Jobs' Mob is going to make a car is too silly for words.

With the Apple watch poised to be a huge yawn, it has been suggested that Jobs' Mob has been looking at one of its admirers Tesla's CEO Elon Musk and saying "we should try that."
Musk has revealed just how far Apple is willing to go to bring his best workers over to Cupertino. In fact, Musk actually told Bloomberg that Apple is "offering $250,000 signing bonuses and 60 percent salary increases" for jumping ship.
Now since the average salary for a Tesla engineer is somewhere between $95,000 and $121,000 depending on the kind of work they're doing that means that there is a huge amount of Apple dosh headed the engineer's way.
The other thing that will happen is that Tesla loses all its expertise and has to surrender the field to Apple. This is more or less what Apple has been sued over in the recent battery case.
Unfortunately for Apple, Musk has studied the book of Jobs and has been aggressive in its own right poaching Apple employees. At the moment Tesla has stolen away more employees from Apple than it has from any rival car company.
So the question is, if Apple is so desperate to get into the eco-car business, why doesn't it just buy Tesla?
Part of the issue is that Apple historically does not write huge cheques for companies and the other problem is that Apple is probably not as interested in the car industry as the Tame Apple Press claims.
There can be lots of reasons why Apple needs car engineers without making its own vehicle. In fact if Apple made a car it would be hugely expensive, and need to be scrapped after a year, while that works with consumer toys people expect their cars to last a little longer.
Apple could want to get into the automotive market, with its own entertainment systems or computer hardware and software controls. To do this it would need some pretty clever automotive engineers to explain how car's work and integrate Apple censors and tech into vehicles.
While it does seem like an automotive accident waiting to happen, there would be some car manufacturers who would love to tout their cars are "controlled by Apple."

Apple to pay $533 million for infringing patents with iTunes

Apple has been ordered to shell out $533 million to patent licensing company, Smartflash, after it was found guilty of infringing on patents with iTunes. The ruling was decided on by a federal jury in Texas, where Smartflash is based. Apple tried to argue that the Smartflash patents were invalid but this was ultimately rejected.
The patents in question go over DRM, data storage and payment systems. Smartflash had actually hoped for a $852 million payout which Apple’s lawyers said was excessive since the patents were only worth $4.5 million. However, Smartfish argued that Apple infringed the patents knowingly and willingly as the technology was presented to Augustin Farrugia over ten years ago, who later became Apple’s Director of Security.

Speaking with Bloomberg, an Apple spokesperson gave a statement on the ruling: “Smartflash makes no products, has no employees, creates no jobs, has no U.S. presence, and is exploiting our patent system to seek royalties for technology Apple invented”.
“We refused to pay off this company for the ideas our employees spent years innovating and unfortunately we have been left with no choice but to take this fight up through the court system.”
Apple does plan to appeal the ruling and avoid paying out the $533 million sum. It could be a while until Smartfish sees any of that money.

Over a million Chase Bank customers now use Apple Pay

Chase Bank, a unit of JP Morgan Chase & Co., has announced that more than 1 million of its customers have provisioned their credit/debit cards for use with Apple Pay since the mobile payments service's launch.
The announcement was made during Chase's 2015 Investor Day, where the bank also shared some interesting statistics related to its Apple Pay customers, revealing that they are on an average nine years younger and make 21 percent more money than its average customers, and around 69 percent of their Chase card Apple Pay transactions are credit-based.
It was also revealed that these customers used their credit cards more frequently, and were more likely to add a credit card than a debit card to their Apple Pay account.
Although Apple hasn't yet officially shared adoption details on its mobile payments service, CEO Tim Cook during the company’s fiscal Q1 2015 earnings call last month revealed that Apple Pay accounted for around $2 out of every $3 spent using contactless payments across Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.
Last month, Bank of America also revealed that nearly 800,000 of its customers had signed up for Apple Pay, adding over 1.1 million cards to the service. In total, over 80 financial institutions now support the service, which was launched in the US in October last year.
Recently, JetBlue became the first airline to accept Apple Pay in-flight.

    Apple steals Samsung staff now

    Its geniuses are failing

In another sign that the fruity cargo cult Apple is running out of ideas, it has been attempting steal staff from its rival Samsung.

For years, Jobs' Mob was telling the world that Samsung did not have any original ideas that it did not steal from Apple. Now it appears that it desperately needs Samsung expertise.
The Korea Times claims that Apple has been targeting "experts in next-generation technology" from Samsung Electronics.
Citing an anonymous official from Samsung, the report highlights that the iPhone maker has a history of picking off chip experts from the Korean company using competitive compensation and "greater independence" as engineers.
But if Samsung copies Apple, then what advantage does Jobs' Mob have in stealing staff from the outfit? Apple recently decided to start buying Samsung's chips to stick in its next generation iPhone, it is starting to look like without its old partners it can't come up with anything new.

Google exec: It's 'irresponsible' of Apple to make everything expensive

Prada should be ashamed of itself.
Those people at Tesla should take a look in the mirror. And as for the rotten, rapacious individuals who make Cristal, they should be appalled. Especially since half of their product always seems to get poured over someone in a club.
No, these aren't my thoughts. I'm merely channeling, in a terribly loose way, the mind of Sundar Pichai, Google's head of product.
In an interview with Forbes, he was asked to respond to Apple CEO Tim Cook, who seems to enjoy poking a large elbow into Android's rib cage.
Pichai explained how very different Google's Android mobile operating system was from Apple's iOS offering. He said: "Users use our services by choice. These are very loved products. We have many, many products that have more than 1 billion users. They provide a lot of value. And we provide many of these services for free."
Of course, providing a service for free doesn't mean you don't profit from it in myriad ways. But still, Pichai wanted to underline that there's something creepily elitist about Apple.
He said: "It's a bit irresponsible to say everything should be many hundreds of dollars [as most Apple products are]."
I hadn't been aware that corporations somehow operated on the principle of responsibility. Some, if not many, give the impression that their task is merely to make as much money as possible, which is something Apple does quite well.
Pichai, though, seems to be echoing the recent thoughts of Motorola President Rick Osterloh. Osterloh was responding to hardly veiled criticism of his company's belief in customization. This criticism has come from Apple's design head Jony Ive. Ive didn't mention Motorola by name, but he described its concept as "abdicating your responsibility as a designer."
Osterloh's response was to complain that Apple charged "outrageous prices."

Surely, though, Pichai and Oseterloh are aiming their disdain at the wrong target. They really should be criticizing you. It's your fault.
By you, I mean all you people who pay these allegedly outrageous and irresponsible prices for Apple products.
You are being allegedly seduced either by design or simplicity or merely the need to use the same products as people whom you aspire to be like.
It's you who are upsetting these executives. How could you?

Since A $533 Million Payday Isn’t Enough, Patent Troll Smartflash Hits Apple With Another Lawsuit

Just days after winning a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple to the tune of $532.9 million, Smartflash LLC is again suing the Cupertino outfit over the exact same patents. The Texas-based company feels confident it can squeeze more money out of Apple by again claiming infringement, this time focusing on devices that were introduced after the prior case had begun.

According to Reuters, Smartflash wants Apple to pay additional damages for using its allegedly infringed patents without permission in devices like the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPad Air 2, none of which were included in the original case.

"Smartflash filed the complaint to address products that came out too far into the last proceedings to have been included," Smartflash's attorney Brad Caldwell said. "Apple cannot claim they don't know about these patents or understand that they are infringing. A diligent jury has already rejected those arguments."

After the original verdict that awarded Smartflash hundreds of millions of dollars, Apple issued a scathing statement that strongly suggested Smartflash was a patent troll, and that it planned to appeal the decision.

"Smartflash makes no products, has no employees, creates no jobs, has no U.S. presence, and is exploiting our patent system to seek royalties for technology Apple invented," said Kristin Huguet, an Apple spokeswoman. "We refused to pay off this company for the ideas our employees spent years innovating and unfortunately we have been left with no choice but to take this fight up through the court system."

The case went to trial in Tyler, Texas, which happens to be Smartflash's hometown. It's also a location that's been known to be friendly to patent infringement claims.

Apple seeking hardware and software engineers to build VR gear

Virtual reality has been a part of sci-fi movies and books for decades, but in the recent years the technology started moving towards commercial market and this year we are going to see actual VR gear in stores. Initially, virtual reality technology will be used solely for gaming, but Facebook believes that eventually VR could be used for communications and other things. Apparently, Apple is also interested in VR and is actually hiring appropriate specialists.
Apple is presently looking for a senior display systems engineer for “display systems design and development related to VR environments,” reports 9to5mac. Apple needs someone, who has experience in monitor and projection technologies, who will help the company to develop “extremely high fidelity VR environments.” The candidate will have to design, select and specify appropriate hardware and software components to optimize fidelity in a variety of VR environments. He or she will also have to assist software, electrical and mechanical engineers during development process.
Apple is also hiring multiple specialists, which could be useful for developing various aspects of virtual reality hardware and software. For example, the company is seeking software engineers to work on virtual reality and augmented reality experiences.
While it is possible to guess what elements of virtual reality hardware and software Apple is developing from its job listings and some other indicators (e.g., patents and patent applications), it is completely impossible to predict what Apple could finally ship.

Without any doubts, virtual reality presents rather incredible opportunities for many markets beyond video games. Apple could be interested in many, if not the majority of them. However, it is pretty obvious that in the current form virtual reality hardware is appropriate only for gamers, not for general consumers. It will take a lot of time to perfect VR headsets and it actually remains to be seen whether consumers would actually like to wear anything at all. While VR in the form of various headsets offers loads of types of user experiences, they have major limitations that will take decades and hundreds of technological breakthroughs (holograms, projectors, bandwidth, etc.) to overcome.
Since Apple is hiring engineers, it must be up to something. However, the company is known for not releasing products that it creates and tests in its labs, so, it is not cast in stone that Apple will release its VR headset any time soon. Since Apple clearly bets on its platform and ecosystem at large, it is obvious that the latter have to be expanded with new hardware and software to stay competitive. From this perspective, it is natural to anticipate Apple to offer some VR hardware over time, but before that it is more logical to expect the company to introduce something akin to Google Glass and Microsoft Hololens, but done completely differently.
Apple did not comment on the news-story.

Round 2 - Smartflash is suing Apple after their previous $533m win

In more extremely ironic news and fresh off their $533 million lawsuit win against the tech giant, Texas-based company Smartflash is taking Apple into round two of hearings with attorney Bradley W. Caldwell stating "Apple has released new products that came out too late for inclusion in Smartflash's previous action against Apple."

This new case is based around allegations that Apple has infringed on seven of Smartflash's patents through their release of the "iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad mini 3, and iPad Air 2 devices containing any version of iTunes that can access the iTunes Store or any version of the App Store app," as reported by PC World.

Smartflash also alleges that Apple has infringed on their patents titled "Data Storage and Access Systems." We haven't been told exactly how much Smartflash are chasing with this lawsuit, but expect it to be in the hundreds of millions yet again.
