Apple hits back at BBC report disclosing poor working conditions

Apple executives have lashed out at the BBC Panorama report that revealed ongoing poor working conditions for employees at an Apple manufacturing facility in China. The report indicated employees were found to work up to 16 hours per shift, working many consecutive days, and living in harsh environments in their dormitories.

Apple CEO Tim Cook noted educational programs for workers in China, along with improving working conditions, in an open letter to Apple employees working in the UK.

"As you know, Apple is dedicated to the advancement of human rights and equality around the world. We are honest about the challenges we face and we work hard to make sure that people who make our products are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve."

This is a problem that won't go away anytime soon for Apple - as it has been accused along with other western tech companies working inside of China - of poor working conditions, inhumane treatment of employees, and other serious workplace problems.

    Apple copies Microsoft security system

    A decade too late
The fruity cargo cult Apple has done what Microsoft has been doing for years – pushing out security updates. It seems that Apple has just discovered the technique which the Tame Apple Press is trying to explain as something “super”, “cool” and “original.”
The company pushed out the software to fix critical security vulnerabilities in a component of its OS X operating system called the network time protocol, or NTP, according to Apple spokesman Bill Evans. NTP is used for synchronizing clocks on computer systems. The “super” “cool” and “original” Apple programmers have never been able to write software which can tell the time properly and there are usually problems when it comes to summer time anyway.
These flaws were a little nastier and not something that Apple could ignore. They were made public last week by the Department of Homeland Security and the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute. When Apple released previous security patches, it did so through its regular software update system, which typically requires user intervention and happens some months after the flaw has been forgotton.
The company decided to deliver the NTP bug fixes with its technology for automatically pushing out security updates, which Apple introduced two years ago but had never previously used, because it wanted to protect customers as quickly as possible due to the severity of the vulnerabilities.

Apple reopens online store in Russia with inflated pricing

It’s been nearly a week since Apple ceased online sales of its goods in Russia due to extreme fluctuations in the value of the local currency, the ruble. An Apple spokesperson at the time said they closed the store to review pricing, a move that has resulted in the reopening of the store today.
Pricing in the store, as you might expect, has been seriously inflated. As Computer World notes, a 16GB iPhone 6 could be had for 39,900 rubles last week before the store shut down. Today, the same iPhone now commands 53,990 rubles which is equivalent to $988 USD.
Apple doesn’t have any official retail stores in Russia although many local resellers and wireless providers carry their gear. Of them, the cheapest for the aforementioned iPhone appears to be 48,990 rubles at the Svyaznoy electronics chain. Doing the math, that’s roughly nine percent cheaper than Apple’s revised price.
To put it all into context, a 16GB iPhone 6 without a contract sells for $649 in the US.
The good news for Apple is that Russia isn’t exactly one of their top markets. According to research firm IDC, only 1.6 million iPhones were sold in the region last year which accounts for just one percent of Apple’s total iPhone sales in 2013.
For those not up to speed, the Russian ruble tanked last week. At one point, it was trading at nearly 80 rubles to the dollar. As of writing, that’s improved to 54.59 rubles to the dollar.

Apple "not interested" in releasing The Interview on iTunes for XMAS

We've only just reported that Sony Pictures is having a 'limited release' of The Interview, pushing it out to select theaters and digitally, but Apple has come out stating that it is "not interested" in releasing the movie on iTunes for Christmas.

The New York Times is reporting that Sony Pictures talked with Apple, who refused, even pressuring The White House to step in, to no avail. Apple's decision to not provide The Interview on iTunes is, I'm sure, to do with any retaliation with North Korea. Apple won't want the mess and bad publicity that would come with an attack on their internal servers, so they're probably playing it better safe than sorry. Understandable, I guess.

Apple CEO Tim Cook named 'CEO of the Year' by CNN

Tim Cook has been named "CEO of the Year" for 2014 by CNN, with the rise of Apple stock and record-breaking iDevice launches for the year cementing Cook as CNN's CEO of the Year. Cook took first place, while John Chen of BlackBerry, Mary Barra of GM and Meg Whitman of HP weren't too far behind him.

CNN said that Apple was the "apple of Wall Street's eye again" thanks to its stock driving up 40% this year, as well as other individual factors that led to the stock price going up. CNN said that Cook did "an amazing job" over the year, with the successful launches of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as other various launches, including Apple Pay.

All eyes are watching for the launch of the Apple Watch early next year, which could be another big win for both Cook and Apple. CNN said "Cook has arguably the toughest CEO job in America. He's had to convince skeptics that Apple can still innovate after the death of Steve Jobs. He's proven all the naysayers wrong."

Apple Announces Annual Lucky Bag Sale in Japan

    Made with Flare More Info'>
Apple has announced that its annual Lucky Bag Sale in Japan will begin on January 2nd.
The lucky bag sales are a New Year tradition in Japan, where customers are offered a bag of mystery items at a set price. The bag could equal or exceed its value, with the potential to make massive savings on some expensive items.
According to MacRumors, last year Apple offered bags for 36,000 yen ($345) and often included “iPods, headphones and t-shirts”. Some lucky customers found themselves with iPads, iPhones and MacBooks all for that extremely low price.
The sale is obviously only confined to Japan, but wouldn’t it be fantastic to have this everywhere else? The sale has become extremely popular in Japan every year now and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple try it in some other countries.

Apple responsible for more than half of all mobile device activations this holiday season

If you didn’t activate a new Apple device this holiday season, you were apparently in the minority. According to a new report from research firm Flurry, more than 51 percent of mobile devices activated between December 19 and December 25 were from the Cupertino-based company.
To be precise, Apple accounted for 51.3 percent of all activations during the week leading up to and including Christmas (which also includes other holidays like Hanukkah). Samsung finished in second place with 17.7 percent of device activations followed by Nokia, Sony and LG with 5.8 percent, 1.6 percent and 1.4 percent of all activations, respectively.
To put the numbers into perspective, Apple activated 2.9 devices for every Samsung device that was activated and for every Lumia device activated, Apple activated 8.8 iDevices.
Flurry examined data from more than 600,000 apps to determine that once again, Christmas Day was responsible for the largest number of new device activations and app installations in a single day over the course of the entire year.
The firm also noted that companies like HTC, Huawei and Xiaomi accounted for less than a one percent share on Christmas Day. One of the reasons for this, Flurry highlighted, is because December 25th isn’t the biggest gift-giving day of the year in Asian markets like it is in other parts of the world.
While a single report is just that, it’s already becoming clear that Apple’s new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were well received by consumers this holiday season.

Apple Pay to Rumoured Launch in the UK in First Half of 2015

Apple Pay is said to be launching in the UK during the first half of next year according to The Telegraph. Banks are reportedly in discussions with Apple, with some questioning the use of users personal and financial information.
“It is understood the bank is uncomfortable with the amount of personal and financial information Apple wants to collect about its customers. Some executives fear Apple Pay and the data it delivers to Apple could serve as a beachhead for an invasion of the banking industry.
Sources accepted no major bank will want to miss out on Apple Pay, however, as early signs from the United States suggest it may be the service to finally convince consumers to pay with mobile phones.”
Apple Pay has been met with great success in the US, with a significant number of high profile retailers and banks agreeing to take part in the service. Customers have welcomed it too, praising its ease of use and security.

14-Day Return Policy Launches for EU iTunes Customers

In line with new European Union regulation, Apple has launched a 14-day return policy for iTunes digital purchases. The new policy affects all downloads from Apple’s iTunes music and movies stores, the App Store, iBooks Store and for any other download purchase made with Apple.
Right of cancellation: If you choose to cancel your order, you may do so within 14 days from when you received your receipt without giving any reason, except iTunes Gifts which cannot be refunded once you have redeemed the code.

To meet the cancellation deadline, you must send your communication of cancellation before the 14-day period has expired.
Effects of cancellation: We will reimburse you no later than 14 days from the day on which we receive your cancellation notice. We will use the same means of payment as you used for the transaction, and you will not incur any fees for such reimbursement.
Exception to the right of cancellation: You cannot cancel your order for the supply of digital content if the delivery has started upon your request and acknowledgement that you thereby lose your cancellation right. – Excerpt from updated iTunes terms and conditions in the EU.
In the US and elsewhere, the terms still state “All sales Final”, while this has always been offered with a degree of flexibility (something I know from personal experience).

Apple still leads PC satisfaction index but cedes phones to Samsung

According to the latest numbers from the American Customer Satisfaction Index, folks are more satisfied with Apple's personal computers than they are with those from any other vendor. However, the iPhone maker lost ground in the "cellular telephone" space, ceding the number-one spot to rival Samsung.Cupertino leads much of the PC pack by a wide margin, but its satisfaction score dropped to 84, down three points from 2014. That's still much better than Acer and Dell at 76, Toshiba at 75, and HP at 74. All four of those contenders also scored lower than last year, though Acer only lost a single point, compared to 3-6 for its competitors.
Interestingly, satisfaction in smaller PC makers that comprise the "all others" category increased from 76 to 82, beating all the big names but Apple—and the industry as a whole. Asus and Lenovo aren't listed individually, so they're presumably part of that group.
Apple lost two points on the cellular smartphone front, falling from 81 to 79. More surprisingly, perhaps, it gave up the number-one spot to Samsung, whose satisfaction score rose from 76 to 81. That's an impressive leap considering how many Samsung handsets are saddled with its TouchWiz UI.
Bucking the overall trend in personal computers, smartphone satisfaction was generally up this year. Apart from Apple, the major players improved or held steady versus 2013. However, satisfaction in the "all others" category dropped five points. That group includes everyone but Apple, Nokia, Motorola/Google, HTC, BlackBerry, and LG.
    Ryzen R5 3700X / Noctua NH-D15 / B550 AORUS ELITE V2 / Cooler Master H500 Mesh / 16Gb DDR4 @ 3800mhz CL16 / Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super / Seasonic Focus GX 750W / Sabrent Q Rocket 2 TB / Crucial MX300 500Gb + Samsung 250Evo 500Gb / Edifier R1700BT

    Apple kicks Android to death

Never write a report after an office Christmas party

Industry analyst Chetan Sharma appeared to have had a little too much Christmas happy juice when he turned out a report which claimed that Apple had kicked Android to death this year.

Writing in his blog Sharma claimed that the most notable developments in the mobile market for 2014, was Android makers sudden drop in profits. This was seized by the Tame Apple Press as a story which claimed that Android had been destroyed by Apple.

Appy-Geek even showed a graph which had Apple with a huge bar of profit, a smaller Samsung one and “others” as a tiny slice. Apple as likely to have taken at least 60 percent of the industry's profits for this year.
If this is true then Android is history and Apple has nearly total control of the smartphone market. The only problem of cause is that it doesn’t. But what Sharma appeared to be saying was that margins had dropped, particularly at the lower end of the market.
He said that the Android device manufacturer community suffered its "most significant ever" drop in profits during 2014, with earnings having dropped 50 percent from expected levels across 2014.
Even with Samsung generating over $100 billion in sales from phones (including smartphones and feature phones), and Xiaomi becoming the leading OEM in China this year, both companies are seeing limited success as far as revenue goes, due to narrow profit margins.
    $100 billion sales for Apple

However Apple generated over $100 billion this year from the sale of iPhones alone.
Appy-Geek also weakened its cause by claiming that Apple was also going to coin it in with its recently announced the Apple Watch, expected to become available next quarter. Total revenue for smartwatches currently is roughly $1.7 billion, with 75 percent of that coming from the US, the online rag enthused.

Apple has murdered the tablet market

    Wins the holiday season
The tablet market has been suffering lately as people woke up to the concept that they were largely pointless, but it is starting to look like the outfit which started the Tablet craze might have had a hand in bumping it off.

Analytics firm Flurry suggests that, among the top five mobile-device manufacturers, Apple “won” the holiday season, with the company’s hardware accounting for 51.3 percent of device activations worldwide followed by Samsung with 17.7 percent, Nokia with 5.8 percent, and Sony with 1.6 percent.
But most of those activations came from phablets. This Christmas, it appears even more consumers are switching to the larger phone now that there is an iOS option and tablets sales are falling.
According to Flurry’s numbers, full-sized tablets accounted for only 11 percent of new devices in 2014, a decline from 2013, when that form-factor totalled 17 percent of the new-device market.
Small tablets experienced a smaller decline, falling from 12 percent to 11 percent of new devices between 2013 and 2014. Meanwhile, phablets expanded from 4 percent of new devices in 2013 to 13 percent this year.
Based on these figures the tablet market is doomed. Nearly all the sales gains that Apple’s new, large iPhones have made were stripped from the tablet market, Consumers are happy with compact smartphones are not switching to larger iPhones for now, but the former tablet buyers did.
We predicted the death of the tablet soon after it launched, mostly because there has never been a killer app which made it anything more than a novelty. The rise of Phablets basically removed any tablet functionality to the phone. When Apple told its own fanboys that a Phablet really was cool, it killed off its own market.

Apple Pay not secure enough for the Brits

    Don’t want sterling reputation damaged
It seems that the fruity cargo cult Apple is having a problem selling its Apple Pay system in the UK.

Apparently, British banks do not think that Apple’s insistence on stealing customer’s data is a good think and are causing problems for the widescale rollout of the product. The Telegraph reports that "at least one" of the UK’s biggest banks is "uncomfortable with the amount of personal and financial information Apple wants to collect about its customers."
Apple has been adamant that it is not collecting users' data via Apple Pay, but it seems that the British Banks did not take its word for it and looked at the small print about Job’s Mob was collecting.
The Tame Apple Press seems to think that the British Banks are worried that Apple is going to take over the banking industry, because soon Apple will take over the world you know.
But the reality is that the UK is fairly advanced when it comes to the use of new payment types and is home to 350,000 of Europe’s 1.5 million contactless point of sale terminals. For every compliant terminal in the UK there are also 200 contactless payment cards in use — compared with a ratio of 600:1 in the US.
What will be worrying for Apple is that since the British banks tend to know what they are talking about, EU banks are more likely to listen to them, than Apple marketing.

Taiwan Calls Off Attack Dogs, Clears Apple, Samsung Of Privacy Rules Violations

For the past four months, Taiwanese regulators have been conducting an investigation into Apple, Samsung, and other smartphone brands for being in breach of local data protection laws. On Tuesday, the National Communications Commissions announced that all accused companies were innocent, according to its findings.

A report released by the NCC revealed that the investigation into 12 brands, which also included Chinese company Xiaomi, concluded that these companies and their products did not violate the law. However, NCC official James Lou added that the commissions would request that mobile phone makers take steps to make information transmission more secure.

The results of the NCC’s findings are underwhelming considering that, earlier in December, NCC vice chairman Yu Hsiao-Cheng had said that the commissions had discovered problems with 12 phone models. While no specifics had been provided, the vice chairman further added that the Taiwanese government would fine offending companies up to $6.43 million or ban the sale of such devices.

Taiwan’s probe, which started in September, was initially focused on Xiaomi phones in response to media reports that some of the company’s models were automatically sending use data back to its servers based in mainland China.
