    Amiibo Character Figurines

Amiibo (アミーボ Amībo?, stylized as amiibo) are a series of figurines produced by Nintendo for use with the New Nintendo 3DS and Wii U gaming platforms. Similar to Skylanders and Disney Infinity, these figures, which are modelled after characters from Nintendo's various franchises, use near field communication (NFC) to interact with supported video game software, allowing data to be transferred in and out of each game and across multiple platforms

Nintendo Will Make a Billion Dollars From Amiibo Sales, Claims Analyst

Analysts estimate Nintendo will make a $297 million profit this year.It doesn't seem that long ago that we were reporting on Nintendo's record, yearly losses, and how the company appeared to be in dire straits. But Nintendo has been trying its hardest to win back its fans, and now, according to an analyst report from Bloomberg, it looks like the company will again have a reason to celebrate this Christmas.
At least eight analysts have raised profit estimates or ratings since September, with the two most recent calling for the company's profit to triple to 36.8 billion yen ($297 million) by the year's end. Furthermore, analysts predict that Nintendo's amiibo figures, which are selling out so fast people think they've been discontinued, are set to bring in the company a billion dollars in profit from US sales alone.
"Nintendo has picked up good momentum heading into the Christmas season," said Tomoaki Kawasaki, a Tokyo-based analyst with Iwai Cosmo Securities Co., who raised his rating to neutral plus last month. "This time they have a hit lineup. Amiibo represents a new revenue source, and we are watching it very closely."
But it's not all toys that Nintendo has to thank for its success: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sold 490,000 units in just three days in the US, the fastest pace ever for the console in the market.
Is Nintendo back? Can we finally put all that "Nintendo is dying" doom and gloom behind us? I'd like to hope so!

Surprise! Nintendo Sold Over 700,000 Amiibo Figures In The U.S., Makes A Killing

It appears Nintendo has a surprise hit on its hands, which would explain why the company's Amiibo toy figures are so darn hard to find. Turns out they're selling like hotcakes. Or to be more specific, sales of Amiibo toys are approximately equal to sales of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Nintendo revealed in a press release.

While Nintendo refrained from coughing up concrete numbers for its Amiibo line, the company said Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has sold nearly 710,000 units combined since launching on November 21, 2014. Since Amiibo sales are "approximately equal" to that, we can surmise that the toy figures have also notched over 700,000 unit sales, and that's in the U.S. alone.

"This is a ringing endorsement from families and fans that Nintendo has the best variety, the best value and the best gaming experiences for sale this holiday season," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "We’re extremely confident in our holiday proposition and look forward to closing this year strong and starting 2015 with a full head of steam."

Nintendo Reveals New Amiibos, Arriving March 2015

Nintendo's latest wave of new and redesigned amiibos will be arriving in time for the launch ofMario Party 10.Nintendo's amiibo line has been a smashing success, to the point that it's become very hard to find some of them on store shelves. And that was just for the initial Smash Bros launch - now Nintendo has revealed a new spring line-up of collectibles: Robin, Lucina, Pac-Man, Ness, Charizard, and Wario. Not only that, fans can expect a new line of redesigned Mario amiibos to be released in conjunction with Mario Party 10.
On March 20, redesigned amiibos of Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Bowser, and the new Toad amiibo will reach store shelves. Compared to the Smash Bros line, these figures will be in more casual position than combative, like how Mario is waving his hand instead of shooting a fireball from it. While these redesigns will arrive alongside Mario Party 10, Mario-related amiibos for Smash Bros will still be compatible with each game. The only downside is thatamiibos won't be able to carry save data for both Smash Bros and Mario Party 10 - players will have to pick one or erase the data.
Activating an amiibo in Mario Party 10 unlocks quite a few features. First of all, it provides access to "amiibo Party" mode, opening up character-specific boards that relating to that amiibo's abilities (the Mario board includes mushrooms, the Luigi board includes vacuums that suck up coins, etc). Players will also be able to attach tokens to their amiibo avatar that gives them an in-game boost, like extra dice during your turn.
If the first wave of amiibo were anything to go on, these latest editions will probably spark yet another scramble to get your favorites before they disappear. Which ones will you be tracking down?

Nintendo selling lots of Amiibos, less hardware

Nintendo hasn’t had anywhere near the success this console generation when compared to the last. A lot of the blame for that can be placed at the feet of marketing and the fact that the casual game market is very different from what it was just a few years ago. However that doesn’t mean the Japanese game maker is struggling across the board. In-fact despite hardware sales still not blowing anyone’s minds, software sales are on the up and the Amiibo line of figurines is selling like hotcakes.
New numbers released by Bloomberg don’t paint the best picture of for Nintendo’s current state or that of its near future, pointing out that just three million Wii U’s were sold between April and December last year. That is however up from the 2.4 million it sold the year before and brings it over nine million units sold in total. It looks likely to have slipped behind the Xbox One at this point, but Microsoft hasn’t released concrete details on that, instead often bundling them with Xbox 360 sales numbers, presumably to make them sound more impressive.

However, despite this gloomy outlook for Nintendo, it managed to create two multi-million copy selling games last year in Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros, which sold almost five million and 3.4 million copies for the Wii U respectively. Smash Bros on the 3Ds did even better, shifting some six million units. These aren’t a patch on traditional Mario Kart figures, with the game selling over 30 million copies on the Wii, but this time last year Nintendo had almost no big sellers on its current home console, so it’s at least heading in the right direction.
It is Amiibos however that are proving the company’s biggest success as of late. Released just a few short months ago, Nintendo has already sold over 5.7 million of the little NFC enabled figures. Thanks to this and still pretty strong – although slowing – 3DS numbers, Nintendo has predicted a profit for the year of some 20 billion yen (£112 million) when all the numbers are tallied. That’s half of what it predicted a short while ago, but still represents a big turn around for the company which has made a loss the last two years in a row.

Man Buys Hundreds of Rosalina Amiibos Out of Spite

A spiteful shopper, going under the pseudonym Daily Dose, has spent over $4,000 on Rosalina amiibo figures. Because he’s such a big fan? No. Because he doesn’t want you to have one.
“I do not appreciate Rosalina appearing in almost every recent Mario game to date. The fact Nintendo promotes her so much and people praise her is just disgusting,” Daily Dose told Nintendo Nuggets. “I hate her fans, too. I know for a fact her amiibo will be among one of the most popular, which is why I took the time to wait and pre-order over 100 of her. I do not want her fans to be happy […] It just crushes me Nintendo from the good days went to this shit for character designs.”
Daily Dose boasts that he still has over $35,000 in disposable spite money, and that he intends to buy up stock of Lucina, Pautena, Robin, and Zero Suit Samus amiibos, too. What weird vendetta he has against those characters and their fans is as yet unclear.

Nintendo’s Next Wave of amiibos to be Sold Only Through eBay

The market for amiibos – Nintnedo’s series of character toys that offer perks when connected to selected games – has become rather lucrative for secondary sales, with the more rare figures being sold on for up to $100. In an effort to suppress this grey market Nintendo has agreed an exclusive partnership with eBay store xXxNoScopexXx to sell the next wave of amiibo figurines.
The deal is designed to stop inflated mark-ups on the resale market by making distribution cheaper and more efficient. Sources close to the deal suggest that this is part of Nintendo’s broader strategy to embrace new market trends.

Nintendo ship nearly 6 million Amiibo NFC figurines worldwide

With Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures continuing to move impressive numbers for gaming systems worldwide, late last year Nintendo got into the market with their range of Amiibo figures for the WiiU and New 3DS systems, releasing a total of 29 NFC equipped Amiibo figures, with a further two waves to come in the next few weeks. With product shortages and some of the rarer figures commanding big prices on eBay, it's no shock that Nintendo completely underestimated the lines popularity, but today's earnings call reveals how strong that popularity is.

Nintendo announced that they've sold through 5.7 million Amiibo figures worldwide, with 'The Legend of Zelda' character Link proving the most popular in all listed countries - except in Australia where Mario topped the chart. Our friends at Vooks are the first to translate the sales charts here.

Amiibo will unlock portions of NES, SNES games

What Nintendo will actually do with its Amiibo figurines has been up for much debate since the little NFC equipped models were released last year. Off the bat they gave us extra costumes in certain games and our own AI cooperative partner in Smash Bros, but these are cross title figures, they can do much more. And that’s on the cards, as Nintendo has plans to make them unlock NES and SNES games from the past, just not all of them.

And by all of them, we don’t mean all of the games, but all of the game, singular. Although Satoru Iwata is keen for gamers to use their Amiibo figures to unlock the titles that helped spawn their creation, such as Mario unlocking Donkey Kong or Super Mario Bros., he doesn’t want to give gamers the full thing.
“We are also planning a free-download app for Wii U in which you can enjoy NES and Super NES games with your Amiibo in the first half of this year,” he said during in investor call. “With this app, once you tap your Amiibo on the NFC area of the GamePad, you will be able to play highlighted scenes of one certain title for NES or Super NES.”

Games have been doing this for years anyway…
The idea he had, was for gamers to touch the Amiibo to the gamepad and get to play a quick section or level from a NES or SNES game. Then, once complete, if you touch again, you could play another part of potentially another game entirely. Iwata claims this will evoke the feeling of “exchanging game cartidges,” with friends.
Iwata also said that Amiibo would soon be compatible with the 3DS too, thanks to the new version’s native NFC connectivity. For those with older 3DS systems, a new, external 3DS reader would be released shortly.

Nintendo Confirms Card-Based Amiibos For This Year

Want the functionality of an amiibo without having to fill your house with plastic toys?At this point no-one can deny the runaway success of Nintendo's amiibo initiative, with fans snapping up the little plastic figures faster than Nintendo can put em on shelves. Last year, Nintendo creative lead Shigeru Miyamoto pondered card-based amiibos, and now it looks like they are becoming a reality. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced in a recent financial presentation that the card-based amiibos are indeed in development for this year.
"In contrast to the current figure-shaped amiibo available, we will make amiibo in the form of cards this year as one of our future plans as Mr. Miyamoto mentioned at the Corporate Management Policy Briefing in October," said Iwata. Card-based amiibo would have the same functionality as the current amiibo figures, but would obviously be quite a bit cheaper and easier to store. It seems like it would be the perfect solution for those who want the extra content that amiibos unlock in-game, but don't care for collecting toys.
Iwata also talked a bit about just how successful these collectibles have been. He said that 5.7 million units had shipped worldwide by the end of last year, and the overwhelming demand surprised even the management at Nintendo of Japan. In particular, they marveled at the premium prices which some amiibo had been selling for on eBay.
Additionally, he released the following regional sales chart:

Which shows that Link is clearly the most popular character across every region except Australia, who has a soft spot for both Nintendo and Pokemon's main mascots.
Lastly, Iwata said that for those 3DS users who haven't upgraded to the NEW Nintendo 3DS, that the external NFC reader accessory planned for the vanilla 3DS models is still in development, and on track for a summer, 2015 release.

Iwata: Amiibo Isn't Copying Skylanders Or Disney Infinity

Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata has told Time that their Amiibo figures aren't just copyingSkylanders or Disney Infinity. They rather bring something new to the table."At first glance it may look like we’re a trend follower with amiibo," said Iwata. "But really what we’re doing is, we have introduced amiibo in a way that is new and where amiibo do things in our games that they can’t do anywhere else. From that perspective, we feel that we are a trendsetter."
"It’s true that if you go into a retail store, and you see the retail shelves, that from a retail perspective, we’re leveraging the structure that’s in place for how the toys to life category is being sold. That’s a hurdle that’s hard to overcome in terms of differentiation. But in terms of how the amiibo are used in games, we do feel that we are taking the lead in terms of broadening what toys to life can be."
"What’s interesting about the Smash Bros. games, is that the Smash Bros. games do not represent the Nintendo characters fighting against one another, they actually represent toys of Nintendo characters getting into an imaginary battle amongst themselves," added Iwata. "And frankly that has to do with a very serious debate that we had within the company back then, which was, ‘Is it really okay for Nintendo characters to be hitting other Nintendo characters? Is it okay for Mario to be hitting Pikachu?"
Por acaso, sempre pensei que os Amibos eram uma cópia dos Skylanders.....

Gold Mario Amiibo Figures Selling for £100 on eBay

Nintendo has released just 3,000 limited edition Gold Mario Amiibo figures at Wal-Mart in the US. Unsurprisingly, given the limited release, a number of people have opted to sell them on using eBay. Prices on eBay consistently reach £100.
The gold color is the only difference between the limited edition Gold Mario Amiibo figure and the regular Mario Amiibo figure. The Amiibo works with several Wii U and 3DS games, including Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8.
