Piratebay servers raided by Swedish police, might be down for good

Some users have noticed that The Pirate Bay has been down for a much longer time than the normal sporadic downtime bursts. At 12 hours, and counting, many have suspected the worst. Google recently moved against apps made for Android devices that accessed the popular site, and many had speculated that Google may have had a hand in The Pirate Bay's disrupted service. It turns out Swedish police are the culprit. The Pirate Bay, deemed "The galaxy's most resilient BitTorrent site", had its apocalyptic safe haven in Sweden raided by the police.

The raid was conducted by Fredrick Ingblad, a specialized inspector in intellectual property crimes. A specialized forensics team and local police seized servers and computers, effectively bringing the popular torrent site to its knees. The Pirate Bay has been under fire for years and the original founders ended up in jail for their efforts. The scrappy site was spread out amongst the wind and managed to continue to thrive for several years, though eventually the website was changed from thepiratebay.org to thepiratebay.se.

The server room was found in a rock shelter in Nacka, Sweden. This is likely the secure Swedish Datacenter AB. This datacenter is housed inside a five-story building inside a gigantic rock cavern. The converted nuclear shelter has concrete walls and the requisite blast doors to hold back the worst of catastrophes, but it couldn't stop the Swedish police. It's hard to believe that one of the largest websites in the world, currently ranked 88 worldwide and 55 in the US, can be kept off-line for long. An employee was arrested during the raid, and there are apparently interrogations underway. We will keep an eye on the status of the site, and shout a joyful "Hallelujah!" if they manage to bring it back online.

Sabu, former Anonymous member turned informant, speaks out publicly

The FBI has tried to crack down on the Anonymous hacker collective, including turning a former high-ranking member into an informant - but the group is still alive and well. Hector Monsegur, operating under the hacker name of "Sabu," admits to a large number of attacks against select targets.

Since being flipped by the FBI, Sabu spent three years communicating with Anonymous and LulzSec members, with the government listening in. His actions reportedly helped prevent more than 300 major cyberattacks against government and NASA PCs and networks.

Sabu says he didn't identify Anonymous members and turn them over to the FBI - and cooperated to help identify attacks, and work to prevent them in the future. "It wasn't a situation where I identified anybody. I didn't point my fingers at nobody. My cooperation entailed logging and providing intelligence. It didn't mean, 'Can you please tell me the identity of one of your mates?'"

Shake the Bag Twice, the Pirate Bay Rumour Mill Is Running Wild

Yesterday we could report that the Swedish authorities raided a server room in Stockholm, Sweden and took down several torrent sites including famous The Pirate Bay. Here we are less than 24 hours later and the rumour mill is running with people looking for a quick headline running wild with rumours. Several outlets including the Herald Sun are now reporting that the site is back up with a Costa Rican IP address, TorrentFreak however were quick to come out and rectify this.
So no, The Pirate Bay is not back online, not yet. You’ll be able to access the front page on some mirrors, but with the backend offline your search queries will end up nowhere. However, as many of readers were quick to point out, the war on the torrent network is an almost pointless endeavor; 10 new sites appear whenever one is taken down. Almost like the magical Hydra.

The Pirate Bay's former spokesman not saddened by closure

Peter Sunde was one of the original The Pirate Bay founders, and his stint as the official spokesman for the popular torrent site earned him prison time. In comments on his blog Peter outlined his disdain with the current state of The Pirate Bay and expressed his feelings on the matter. "The Pirate Bay has been raided, again. That happened over 8 years ago last time. That time, a lot of people went out to protest and rally in the streets. Today few seem to care. And I'm one of them."

Much of Peter's angst stems from the fact that The Pirate Bay has devolved into a soulless entity hell-bent on running garish ads to receive as much money as possible, at least in his eyes. "The site was ugly, full of bugs, old code and old designs. It never changed except for one thing - the ads. More and more ads were filling the site, and somehow when it felt unimaginable to make these ads more distasteful, they somehow ended up even worse," Peter writes. The suggestive ads began when The Pirate Bay was sold to Reservella, a shadowy company based out of Seychelles. Reservella made several moves to monetize the site, but made very few improvements in actual function and design.

Bittorrent's 'Project Maelstrom' Aims To Deliver All Websites Through Torrents

Few will disagree that the arrival of the torrent protocol on the Internet represented a major event that forever changed how many people share files online. Torrents may have been adopted mostly for unauthorized sharing of paid content in its first decade of existence, but it's also been adopted by individuals, organizations and companies as a way to cut bandwidth costs or share data more securely.
Not too long ago, Bittorrent launched Bittorrent Sync, which allows individuals to sync or share files with other computers in a secure way. Now, the company wants the whole web to be rebuilt around torrents.

Bittorrent announced the invite-only Alpha version of its Project Maelstrom, which is a browser that fetches websites from other peers instead of a central server. Websites are delivered P2P using the torrent protocol.
"It started with a simple question. What if more of the web worked the way BitTorrent does?" said Eric Klinker, CEO of Bittorrent, in a blog post.
“Project Maelstrom begins to answer that question with our first public release of a web browser that can power a new way for web content to be published, accessed and consumed. Truly an Internet powered by people, one that lowers barriers and denies gatekeepers their grip on our future."
Downloading files through torrents tends to be faster if those files are popular, and therefore shared by more people. The opposite is true with files that don't have too many people sharing them at any given time. A torrent-based browser could face the same issue. However, if the majority of today's popular websites start supporting this browser, most people are unlikely to notice a difference, because a lot of folks tend to visit websites that are already quite popular.

Tech companies largely relying on hackers to find exploits for them

Major technology companies want to hire hackers to help identify potential software vulnerabilities before products are released - and real cybercriminals are able to exploit any problems. The "bug bounties" program is being embraced by Facebook, Mozilla, Google and other major Silicon Valley companies, providing thousands of dollars to help identify bugs.

"The trajectory we're on now is completely unsustainable," said Vikram Phatek, NSS Labs CEO, when discussing the current cybersecurity landscape. "There will not be a person in the country who will not have a compromised computer if this goes on. We are ripe for having a major catastrophe."

Lawmaker wonders why US government sink the Pirate Bay

Sweden may have finally dropped The Pirate Bay off the map earlier this week, but Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) wondered why the Obama Administration wasn't able to remove the "illegal enterprise operating out of Sweden" even sooner.

Sen. Whitehouse Googled "pirate movies" and quickly found a link to The Pirate Bay via Google, apparently leaving him frustrated.

"There are ways in which these companies could go to court and try to knock this stuff down," Sen. Whitehouse recently said. "There are ways in which prosecutors can have discussions with companies about aiding and abetting offenses, and being accessories to offense. There's a lot that can be done in this area, it seems to me."

Pirate Bay co-founder wants it to stay offline

Earlier this week, Sweden’s police force managed to take down The Pirate Bay and it has been offline ever since. As it turns out, TPB co-founder, Peter Sunde, thinks that the site should stay offline because he’s “not a fan of what TPB has become”.
Following the raid that took the site and its proxies offline, Sunde took to his blog to explain his feelings on the matter. “The site was ugly, full of bugs, old code and old design. It never changed except for one thing – the ads. More and more ads was filling the site, and somehow when it felt unimaginable to make these ads more distasteful they somehow ended up even worse.”

The post then goes on to say that Sunde originally wanted The Pirate Bay to shut down on its tenth birthday but instead, a party was thrown and sponsored by what he describes to be a sexist company. The co-founder wasn’t particularly fond of how the site chose to make money after his departure:
“There was a ticket price to get in, automatically excluding people with no money. The party had a set line-up with artists, scenes and so on, instead of just asking the people coming to bring the content. Everything went against the ideals that I worked for during my time as part of TPB.”
There’s no denying that The Pirate Bay has changed over the years and has become a lot less community driven and focused. You can read Sunde’s full blog post on why The Pirate Bay should stay down, HERE.

Vulnerabilities Discovered in Alibaba Marketplace Risks Millions of Merchant and Buyer Accounts

A critical security vulnerability has been discovered on AliExpress, owned by China‘s largest e-commerce giant Alibaba. The vulnerability, if exploited by criminal hackers, could have exposed account details of tens of millions of merchants and shoppers, reported security firm AppSec Labs.

    Alibaba security vulnerability:

Discovered by Barak Tawily of the AppSec Labs, this cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the AliExpress was found in a form that allows buyers to send messages to suppliers. By adding malicious code to the body of that message form, hacker could get seller’s session ID enabling him to perform actions on victim’s behalf hijacking over merchant’s store. Alibaba Group has patched this major security vulnerability after the security firm reported it to the group.
Alibaba is considered as one of the top e-commerce giants based out of China and serving international markets. Serving more than 300 million active users from around 200 countries, any security vulnerability in the platform has the capability of exposing details of millions of sellers and buyers.

Leaked Email Indicates Google, Sony Invited to Anti-Piracy Meeting With US Homeland Security

It would seem Google and movie studios are trying to strengthen a relatively fragile relationship that continues to evolve.
A leaked email from a member of the Sony Pictures legal team to CEO Michael Lynton, sent on March 19, 2012, indicated Homeland Security official John Morton wanted Lynton to attend a meeting “to find a compromise to the Google issues.”
Here is part of the leaked email:
“Google apparently is willing to do more than its public (and not so public) positions; Google suggested you as the most balanced and reasonable person on the studio side and specifically requested your participation. No other studio would be involved.
You are his first phone call invitation to this small group. He plans on also inviting the Chairman , President and CEO of Eli Lilly , John C. Lechleiter, who is very involved in fighting counterfeit pharmaceuticals; additionally , he wants to invite Ernie Allen who is the President and CEO of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. I have attached the resumes of each of these 2 gentlemen. Lastly, he is thinking of including someone from Rosetta Stone; I still have not confirmed who that would be. From what I understand, John does not want the group any larger.”
The president and CEO of biopharmaceutical company Eli Lilly was invited, as the company was able to clamp down on counterfeit pharmaceuticals that were sold online. Furthermore, representatives from Rosetta Stone and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children were requested to contribute during the meeting.
It’s unknown if the meeting ever took place – and was supposed to be a “very confidential” meeting – but Google has recently been involved in several high-profile anti-piracy efforts. The tech company cracked down on a few different torrenting apps available in its Google Play store, along with again outlining its anti-piracy efforts in a new report.
In the past, movie studios accused Google of helping facilitate piracy, criticizing the No. 1 search engine for not doing more in its effort to prevent online piracy.

MPAA Plot to Attack Google Uncovered

Leaked e-mails have revealed that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) paid multiple state Attorneys General to attack Google. The leaked e-mails are the latest scandal to break from the massive Sony online hack. The MPAA and Google have a tempestuous history together; Hollywood accuses Google of facilitating copyright infringement by indexing illegal torrent sites, and Google regularly resists the MPAA’s attempts to censor its search results.
The Verge summarises one of the key incriminating e-mails from the MPAA below:
May 8, 2014: Fabrizio to group. “We’ve had success to date in motivating the AGs; however as they approach the CID phase, the AGs will need greater levels of legal support.” He outlines two options, ranging from $585,000 to $1.175 million, which includes legal support for AGs (through Jenner) and optional investigation and analysis of (“ammunition / evidence against”) Goliath. Both options include at least $85,000 for communication (e.g. “Respond to / rebut Goliath’s public advocacy, amplify negative Goliath news, [and] seed media stories based on investigation and AG actions.”).
The e-mail needs a little deciphering: ‘Goliath’ refers, of course, to Google, whereas CID stands for ‘Civil Investigative Demand’, a form of administrative subpoena to force information from a company. In summary: powerful Hollywood studio collective pays US public servants to bully a company it doesn’t like. It will be interesting to see how the MPAA tries to spin this.

The Pirate Bay is back, and this time IsoHunt is powering it

Popular torrent site isoHunt has been unofficially resurrected. The Pirate Bay at oldpiratebay.org which is a fully functional website containing Pirate Bay archives. At first glance the new site seems to be a commemorative site for The Pirate Bay but a detailed review actually shows that the site is serving new content. Since the shutdown of original site by Swedish police this week (due to violations of copyright law) several mirror sites have appeared but this particular one seems to be different as other haven’t been able to provide new content and some even went further by providing fake content and trying to charge its users.

“Nothing will be forgotten. Keep on believing, keep on sharing”- says isoHunt team

The weird thing is that the new site is being built and hosted by a competitor of The Pirate Bay, and it’s too early to conclude what the intentions of the company are but it seems that the intentions are sincere as isoHunt’s explanation for this new created site is:
As you probably know the beloved Pirate Bay website is gone for now. It’ll be missed. It’ll be remembered as the pilgrim of freedom and possibilities on the web. It’s a symbol of liberty for a generation of internet users.

In its honor we are making the oldpiratebay.org search. We, the isohunt.to team, copied the database of Pirate Bay in order to save it for generations of users. Nothing will be forgotten. Keep on believing, keep on sharing.
isoHunt maybe the best group to resurrect The Pirate Bay after it’s shutdown, isoHunt launched in 2003 and rapidly grew to become third most popular torrent site in 2008, but in October 2013 the company had to shutdown after a series of legal battles with the same allegations of copyright infringements that led to the closure of The Pirate Bay. But it wasn’t long before the original isoHunt was replaced by isoHunt.to (the isoHunt of today).
This new site created by isoHunt is a better choice than the rest of the mirror sites and fakes provided it keeps on offering new content. Given its roots, it really should be no surprise that isohunt.to decided to launch oldpiratebay.org. It is still unclear whether the original Pirate Bay will be restored, unless it does this seems the best alternative up until now for users who are so inclined.

Chinese cybercriminals continue to ravage critical infrastructure

Chinese cybercriminals are finding success using social engineering attacks to easily compromise companies, with an increased focus on universities, financial institutions, defense contractors, and critical infrastructure. Likely state-sponsored cyberattackers were able to breach the Canadian National Research Council, searching around for scientific research information and possible trade secrets.

A spear-phishing attack, with the email including an attached piece of malicious code, found its way onto the organization's network. The Canadian government didn't disclose what type of information could have been compromised from the breach, which took place earlier in 2014.

It is also unclear as to whether any personal information has been compromised," said Tobi Cohen, a privacy commissioner spokeswoman, as noted by the CBC. "We are satisfied that the organization took appropriate steps to notify employees and other parties about the cyber-intrusion and that efforts are underway to update [information technology] systems and security procedures to prevent this from happening again."
