Microsoft to eliminate original Kinect for Windows in 2015

Microsoft plans to phase out sales of the original Kinect for Windows sensor starting in 2015, after shipping the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor and 2.0 software development kit (SDK) in late 2014.

Kinect users spend $199 to invest in a hands-free motion sensor system that allows them to interact with games, productivity tools and apps, using gestures or voice. However, the Kinect SDK 2.0 allows developers to create Windows Store Kinect-enabled apps, and use the Kinect Adapter for Windows to use the Xbox One sensor and still develop Windows apps.

"The original Kinect for Windows sensor was a milestone achievement in the world of natural human computing," Microsoft wrote in the blog. "It allowed developers to create solutions that broke through the old barriers of mouse and keyboard interactions, opening up entirely new commercial experiences in multiple industries, including retail, education, healthcare, education, and manufacturing."

Microsoft Releases More Diversity Stats, and They Aren’t Pretty

    Jim Merithew/WIRED

Microsoft has quietly released more information about the diversity of its employees, and these new stats are in line with most every other big player in tech: Women and people of color are highly underrepresented at the software giant. Late last year, Microsoft revealed some of its diversity statistics and even launched a dedicated diversity and inclusion website. But some activists urged the company to release its federal Equal Opportunity form, or EEO-1, which contains more information about the company’s internal diversity numbers. Just after the New Year, the company did indeed make the form public.
The company’s effort to make its diversity numbers more transparent came after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella suggested at the Grace Hopper Conference last October that women shouldn’t ask for raises, but rather wait for the system—and “karma”—to promote them through the ranks. His comments drew a swift backlash of responses on Twitter, and Nadella promptly apologized for his statements.
The reason for the imbalance in the number of women and minorities working in technology, the well-worn argument goes, is that there aren’t many women and people of color to hire in the first place. Leaders at top tech companies often justify the statistics by calling it a “pipeline problem.” But lately, the public has pushed these companies to at least make the numbers more transparent, as a first step towards addressing the problem and closing the gap. Several have complied, including Google and Facebook as well as Microsoft.
The new statistics released by Microsoft are disappointing at best. The company’s report to the federal government says that 76 percent of its overall workforce is male, while only 24 percent is female. 61 percent are white. 29 percent are Asian. 5 percent are Hispanic/Latino. And only 3 percent are black.
Similar to other tech companies, this gulf widens among executives. At the management level, Microsoft is largely white and male. 88 percent of the company’s executives are male, while only 12 percent are female. 81 percent of its leaders are white, while 20 percent are Asian. 3 percent are Hispanic/Latino. And one percent are black.
Comparing Microsoft’s numbers from last year to this year, the new report also shows that Microsoft is indeed working to close diversity gaps. But it’s doing so at snail’s pace: There are only one percent fewer white U.S. employees at the company this year compared to last, and the number of Hispanics at the company grew by 0.5 percent, blacks are up by 0.3 percent and Asians are up by 0.2 percent this year.
According to a recent analysis of employment documents from Facebook, Google, and Yahoo by USA TODAY, in 2014, leading technology companies still vastly underemploy minorities in both technical and non-technical positions. The data shows that African Americans and Hispanics make up only 5 percent of the companies’ workforce, compared to 14 percent nationally.

Bill Gates helps to reinvent the sewage treatment facility

Dealing with human waste is a serious issue in many parts of the world. Disease caused by poor sanitation kills roughly 700,000 children each year and is likely responsible for preventing countless others from fully developing mentally and physically.
A few years ago, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation held a competition in which some of today’s brightest minds were tasked with reinventing the toilet. Western toilets work fine in developed nations but in poor countries, it’s simply not feasible to build out the massive infrastructure of sewer lines and treatment plants to handle the waste.

Another idea is to reinvent the sewage treatment facility which is the goal of a foundation project called the Omniprocessor. Designed and built by Seattle-area engineering firm Janicki Bioenergy, the Omniprocessor is able to safely burn human waste at such a high temperature (1,000 degrees Celsius) that there isn’t even an odor.
The process uses a steam engine that, interestingly enough, creates enough energy to burn the subsequent batch of waste. Or in other words, it essentially powers itself and even has electricity to spare. Best yet, it also produced drinkable water – another serious issue in many poor nations.
Gates claims that the next generation Omniprocessor will be able to handle waste from 100,000 people and produce up to 86,000 liters of potable water each day along with a new 250kw of electricity. The excess electricity could be sold back to the grid to help the owners create a profitable business.
If successful, the project could indeed validate the saying that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Microsoft has removed their free pre-patch Tuesday notices

For over ten years, Microsoft has run an advance notification service (ANS), notifying customers what is to be expected of their monthly security update, allowing for IT teams to prepare their systems and prioritize what needs to be installed in which order.

In a recent announcement by Microsoft's Chris Betz from their security response center (MSRC), this company is focusing on 'optimizing' the notices for their biggest customers only, no longer providing them for free to all.

Betz commented in the MSRC blog that "moving forward, we will provide ANS information directly to Premier customers and current organizations involved in our security programs, and will no longer make this information broadly available through a blog post and web page." He went on to mention that "more and more customers today are seeking to cut through the clutter and obtain security information tailored to their organizations. Rather than using ANS to help plan security update deployments, customers are increasingly turning to Microsoft Update and security update management tools such as Windows Server Update Service to help organize and prioritize deployment. Customers are also moving to cloud-based systems, which provide continuous updating."

Betz also mentioned that most customers were ignoring these releases towards the end, opting to install all updates automatically without checking either way.

Microsoft releases formal video content policy

Microsoft has released a formal policy over the use of its games in Let’s Play videos, streaming and other videos.

When using Microsoft’s content in this way, creators are given a ‘personal, non-exclusive, non-sub-licensable, non-transferable, revocable, limited license’. This extends to any gameplay footage, screenshots and music.

As well as a clause that would allow Microsoft the right to use any content without the creator’s permission, the rules also still give Microsoft plenty of manoeuvring room if it ever came to requesting content to be removed. In exchange for this license, video creators are told that they must not create anything offensive, a clause that is obviously going to be poorly defined.

Creators must also not reverse engineer any of Microsoft’s software and are also not allowed to make any money off the back of the content they publish, except for ad revenue. This includes posting the video to a site that requires a subscription to view, including it in a paid app or even through ads that you place within the video yourself.

This update on video content policy comes days after it was announced that Minecraft, now owned by Microsoft, is currently the second-most searched for topic on Youtube in 2014, coming second as a category only behind music. Despite this, the new policy does not actually affect Minecraft which has its own guidelines relating to video content.

Let’s Play videos and content created by Youtubers featuring games can often boost a developer’s chances of success but the legality of the use of game content is questionable. Back in 2013, Nintendo decided that it still owned this content and attempted to claim ad revenue from anyone using Nintendo games in their videos.

Microsoft gives YouTubers permission to monetize gameplay

Microsoft has updated its Game Content Usage Rules, giving YouTuber’s and Twitch streamers permission to monetize gameplay footage on all of its titles, although Minecraft, which the company recently acquired for $2.5 billion, has a slightly different set of rules. The new policy states that users can create work based on the company’s games if they agree to a certain set of rules.
Derivative works must be for personal, noncommercial use and Streamers/YouTubers looking to monetize video footage can’t “access the assets or otherwise do things that the games don’t normally permit”, which could have a major effect on videos with mods featured.

Users also can’t create content that is “pornographic, lewd, obscene, vulgar, discriminatory (on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc.), illegal, hate speech, promoting violence, drug use or any illegal activity, promoting crimes against humanity, genocide or torture, or is otherwise objectionable.”
Whether or not an item is objectionable is up to Microsoft but if a significant number of people were to flag a specific piece of content, then Microsoft will have to get involved.
Those not using Twitch or YouTube can’t make money off of gameplay footage by selling it or through advertisements, so Microsoft is really trying to keep monetized content on these two specific websites, which will likely make it easier to monitor.
Minecraft footage actually has its own special set of guide lines, the rules aren’t that different, although they are a bit more relaxed, allowing users to sell or create what they want as long as it is not marketed as an official Minecraft product.

Microsoft can charge your phone with light

Cordless is just so last year

Microsoft Researchers have worked out a way that means you will never have to plug in your phone again.

Yunxin Liu, Zhen Qin and Chunshui Zhao from Microsoft Research's Beijing campus have developed a new system they call AutoCharge.
The researchers' paper said that "wireless power methods have several disadvantages, preventing them from being used in our targeted usage scenarios"
Electromagnetic radiation of wireless power is much higher than wireless communications (Wi-Fi or 3G). Thus, safety to human bodies is a big issue in wireless power. As a result, wireless power is usually used only in extreme scenarios such as in outer space, for military purposes, or in very short ranges.
Radio frequencies used in wireless power are much lower than the frequencies of light, it is hard to emit the radio waves within a straight beam. This causes energy waste if the receiver is not large enough and makes it hard to ensure safety.
The current crop of wireless charging solutions for smartphones typically require special phone cases and 'charging pads', and work using electromagnetic induction. Power is transmitted only over a few centimetres.
However the researchers came up with a way of using solar power techniques to charge smartphones.
Indoor surrounding light is usually much than the sunlight and thus cannot be used to charge a smartphone but instead of relying on the sun, the team built a prototype charger that can be mounted on a ceiling and automatically locate a smartphone lying on a table, then charge it using a directed beam of light.
The light charger has two modes. In the 'detection' mode, it uses a camera and image recognition software to detect objects with the size and shape of a smartphone lying on a table. The charger will rotate until it detects an object that looks like a smartphone.
The device then enters charging mode and turns on its light. The prototype used an UltraFire CREE XM-L T6 Focusing LED Flashlight.
    Looks pretty cool to us.

Microsoft Flunks Antivirus Tests. Who Aced Them?

    Credit: AV-TEST
Every antivirus software package promises to protect your computer from danger, but when it comes to detecting malware, there are huge differences among them. German Lab AV-TEST today (Jan. 22) released the results of its latest Windows 7-based tests, and Microsoft's free Security Essentials application came in near the bottom, while paid packages from Bitdefender, Kaspersky Lab and Trend Micro were tied at the top.
It's common knowledge among computer-security professionals that Microsoft Security Essentials and its Windows 8 counterpart, Windows Defender, are terrible at detecting malware. Microsoft itself has said that the two are meant only to be stopgap solutions to confer some degree of herd immunity on Windows users who refuse to install third-party antivirus software.
MORE: Best Antivirus Software and Apps 2015
Just under the top three were Avira, best known for its free antivirus software, and Qihoo, a Chinese antivirus maker, which each scored 17 out of 18 possible points. The products by the better-known Bitdefender, Kaspersky Lab and Trend Micro got 17.5 points each. Avira actually scored better in the malware-protection category than either Bitdefender or Kaspersky; like the offering from Trend Micro, it got a perfect 6 in stopping viruses, worms, Trojans and other malware.
Twenty-eight products in all were tested on Windows 7. They were scored on how well each detected 153 pieces of newly discovered "zero-day" malware and 12,327 pieces of malware that had been discovered in the previous four weeks.
To be specific, the top three scorers were Bitdefender Internet Security, Kaspersky Internet Security and Trend Micro Internet Security, all of which have a list yearly subscription price of $60 for one user and $80 for three users, although discounts can often be found online. (Each company makes several antivirus products.) Avira Antivirus Pro is cheaper, at about $35 list for one user (it's priced in euros), while Qihoo 360 Internet Security is completely free.
Only Trend Micro was able to catch 100 percent of both kinds of malware. Avira and Kapersky snagged 99 percent of the zero-day malware, compared to the 97 percent detected by Bitdefender and Qihoo 360 (according to Qihoo, both use the same malware engine). All four blocked 100 percent of the older malware.
Slightly underperforming the top ranks were the offerings from the big American antivirus firms. McAfee Internet Security and Norton Security each scored 16.5, with the first doing slightly better on performance, the second slightly better on usability. Both scored a healthy 5.5 on protection; Norton got 99 percent of zero-day malware compared to McAfee's 93 percent, but McAfee found all the older malware samples, while Norton only got 99 percent of those.
Differences between a few percentage points in the 90s may not sound like much, but it's what's left over that really counts. A 97-percent detection rate will let three times as much malware come over the castle walls as would a 99-percent detection rate.
Tied with McAfee and Norton for third-highest score were F-Secure Internet Security, which scored a perfect 6 in malware protection yet suffered a bit in performance and usability, and Qihoo 360 Antivirus, a separate product from Qihoo 360 that's available only in China.
Rounding out the top 10 highest-scoring products was Bullguard Internet Security, which scored a solid 16 out of 18.
On the other end of the spectrum were Microsoft Security Essentials, which got zero out of 6 in the protection category (it detected only 49 percent of zero-day malware) yet still scored 11 points thanks to its ease of use and low system impact, and ThreatTrack's VIPRE Internet Security. VIPRE found 76 percent of zero-day malware, yet did poorly on performance and usability; it scored 9.5 out of 18 and came in dead last.
