Microsoft working on game streaming tech codenamed Arcadia

Apparently, Microsoft is working on a new game streaming technology codenamed Arcadia. New reports claim that the Arcadia team is currently working on building a streaming application and game service, with the new technology replacing Rio, which the company demonstrated during September last year.
Arcadia is built on Microsoft’s Azure cloud, which has also been implemented in to a couple of Xbox One games to help with the processing load- the most notable of which is Titanfall. Backing up these new rumors is a Microsoft job post, searching for a software engineer, the listing did mention the Arcadia codename.

It’s no secret that Microsoft has been interested in cloud gaming for some time now. During August earlier this year, Microsoft Research published a note, detailing project DeLorean, which aimed to enable low latency cloud gaming. Then a month later in September, it was reported that Microsoft was working on ways to play Xbox One games via a web browser.
Sony also has a game streaming service, although it hasn’t been as huge a success as Sony likely hoped it would. It is possible that we will see more of this game streaming technology at the Windows 10 event on the 21st of January next year. We already know that Microsoft plans to talk about gaming at the event, with Xbox Head, Phil Spencer, teasing an impending announcement. Additionally, we’ve also had a peek at the new Xbox app, which leaked earlier this week.

    Microsoft to open-source Project Orleans

Microsoft has announced that it is to release the back-end software that powers the multiplayer portion of its Halo franchise under a permissive open-source licence in the near future.

Dubbed Project Orleans, the software is the creation of Microsoft's eXtreme Computing Group and is used to develop and deploy large-scale back-end services on the company's Azure cloud computing platform. These services have been used to drive several of the company's own products, most notably the back-end statistics server for the Halo series of games - which was required to scale to many millions of simultaneous players without skipping a beat.

'Since the release of the Project “Orleans” Public Preview at Build 2014 we have received a lot of positive feedback from the community,' the team behind the software claimed in the announcement, referring to the Project Orlean's presentation at Microsoft's regular developer event earlier this year. 'We took your suggestions and fixed a number of issues that you reported in the Refresh release in September.

'Now we decided to take the next logical step, and do the thing many of you have been asking for – to open-source “Orleans”. The preparation work has already commenced, and we expect to be ready in early 2015. The code will be released by Microsoft Research under an MIT license and published on GitHub. We hope this will enable direct contribution by the community to the project. We thought we would share the decision to open-source “Orleans” ahead of the actual availability of the code, so that you can plan accordingly.
    '

The MIT Licence is one of the more permissive open source/free software licences around, allowing the recipient to do almost anything with the software so long as the original copyright and licence are included intact.

Report: Microsoft prepping streaming service for apps and games

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been vocal about his "mobile first, cloud first" strategy. So, it's no surprise that the latest whispers out of Redmond suggest the OS giant is developing a cloud-based streaming service for games and applications. According to sources cited by ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, the "Arcadia" service is being built on Microsoft's Azure cloud platform. Arcadia reportedly replaces the "Rio" game-streaming service Microsoft demoed last year, but there are few details about what it entails.
Foley was spurred by a Twitter user inquiring about a couple of Microsoft job posting that mention Arcadia and streaming specifically. Those posts indicate that the team behind the project is part of the Operating Systems Group, and that it's developing "premium and unique experiences" that "take advantage of a new geo-distributed massively scaling service to redefine what is possible on today's devices."
The job postings say experience with Android and iOS is a plus, hinting at a possible mobile connection. Foley notes that Arcadia could be used to bring Windows software to mobile devices running other operating systems, which seems plausible given Microsoft's recent push to get its products working on Android and iOS. Streaming Android apps to Windows devices was reportedly considered at one point, as well, but one of Foley's sources says that idea was shelved. Some form of local emulation probably makes more sense for running Android apps in Windows.

Engineers mess up causing Microsoft Azure downtime

Due to gaps in the deployment policies produced by engineers, Microsoft's Azure cloud service was taken offline during a period of time throughout November 2014. This information has been discovered thanks to a detailed mea culpa analysis by Microsoft themselves.

Jason Zander, Azure team member, conducted a final root cause analysis (RCA) and published it recently, claiming that the engineers intended to push software changes to improve performance and reduce processor load of the services' front-end system. However an outage was caused, meaning customers being unable to connect to Azure's storage, virtual machine, website, Active Directory or management portal functions.

The coding succeeded well in improving performance in the testing phases, however the full roll-out was discovered to encounter two main issues. Usually Microsoft deploys these updates in waves, slowly increasing the updated infrastructures bit by bit rather than a full roll-out. However an engineer saw this update as a low risk exercise after a small testing phase and pushed it to everyone in one hit. Thanks to this blunder and subsequent outage, Microsoft are heavily enforcing staged deployments from now on.

The second main mistake was explained by iTnews as leading "to the software change being wrongly enabled on Azure Blob (binary large object) storage front-ends when it had only been tested against table storage front-ends. This exposed a bug that caused some Blob storage front-ends being stuck in infinite loops, and ceasing to respond to requests."

Microsoft VR headset rumoured to arrive at E3 next year

A new report from Taiwan's DigiTimes suggests that Microsoft is readying to mass produce "a head-worn virtual gaming device". The device is expected debut in June - at the E3 show in LA.
In November we heard that Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick had tried an 'enhanced reality' product at Microsoft HQ. He described it as follows: "The demo that I had was at Microsoft's headquarters in a room given over to this [technology], and you had an immersive headset on, and there are characters that appear to be real, and you're interacting with the characters and they're not real, and it's pretty extraordinary," reports GameSpot.
As is often the case, the DigiTimes sources come from the "upstream supply chain," the contract manufacturer companies in Taiwan. The sources indicate that Microsoft's hardware team, developers of the Surface tablet, are making plans with Taiwan manufacturers to mass produce the head-worn device in time for E3, which takes place in June.
As Sony pushes forward with its Project Morpheus is it believed that head-worn VR products will become a new front line in the competition between the PS4 and Xbox One. It's entirely possible that Sony's VR headset will be readied within a similar timeframe to clash directly with Microsoft's plans.

Microsoft is said to have been planning such a VR/AR device since 2010. Previously seen documents contain an illustration, as above, showing people gathered around a large TV wearing special glasses that wirelessly connect with a games console. Other previous mentions of a Microsoft VR/AR project are tagged by the codename 'Fortaleza,' or 'fortress' in Portuguese.

Tech Giants Back Microsoft's Fight Against The Government

When is the last time any of these companies worked together on anything? The government better watch out.

Microsoft is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the US government, and the fight has led to an unlikely alliance between several rival companies. Microsoft was handed a government order requesting access to emails stored at a datacenter in Ireland. The company has been battling the order for several months, and now Apple, Amazon, Verizon, and HP are among the big names lending their support to the fight.

Microsoft no longer has to promote rival browsers in Europe

Back in 2009, to comply with a court order, Microsoft began offering a choice of browsers to European customers who were booting up a copy of Windows for the first time. The screen offered the option to download Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Opera alongside some lesser known alternatives including Maxthon, SRWare Iron, Sleipnir, Lunascape, K-Meleon and Comodo.
But that requirement has now run its course and Microsoft can finally stop advertising its competitors. Indeed, the browserchoice.eu website that was setup as part of the settlement is already gone, and in its place is this:
This website was created by Microsoft in accordance with a decision issued by the European Commission in December 2009. The obligations imposed by the decision have now expired and Microsoft will no longer maintain this website. Microsoft encourages customers who want more information about web browsers or want to download another browser to do so by visiting the websites of web browser vendors directly.

So, five years in, how successful was the European Commission’s goal of promoting choice and healthy competition? It depends on who you ask.
A Commission spokeswoman called it a “successful remedy” noting that it was viewed 795 million times and prompted 165 million browser installations. Looking at browser usage data in the EU, however, things don’t seem to have changed much. Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer have all declined, while Google -- which was already on an upward trend -- did experience significant growth. How much of that is attributable to the ballot is hard to gauge.
Aside from promoting its rivals’ software Microsoft was also subject to a hefty fine to the tune of $731 million when a "technical error" caused the browser choice screen to be left out of Windows 7 SP 1 for a 14 month period.

Hello this is Microsoft, suing tech support scammers

I’m sure most of you have either received a call yourself, or know someone who has, where the person on the other end of the phone claims to be calling from Microsoft and has identified a problem with your Windows PC. Unfortunately while it may be easy for most of us to spot these fake calls based on the fact that we know Microsoft would never contact us like that, these kind of “support” scams do catch people. Tens of thousands of them every year!
“Since May 2014, Microsoft has received over 65,000 customer complaints regarding fraudulent tech support scams,” Microsoft said in it’s latest blog post.
Most of the time scammers are not only saying they are calling from Microsoft, but will also have web pages they direct you to that look like Microsoft’s own billing pages. So to try and fight back for it’s consumers, Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit is filing a civil lawsuit in California complaining of trademark infringement, trademark dilution, cybersquatting, and deceptive trading practices.

Microsoft also has the following guidelines to help:
If someone claiming to be from Microsoft tech support, or affiliated with Microsoft, calls you:

    • Do not purchase any software or services.
    • Ask if there is a fee or subscription associated with the “service.” If there is, hang up.
    • Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm that it is a legitimate representative of a computer support team with whom you are already a customer.
    • Take the caller’s information down and immediately report it to your local authorities.
    • Never provide your credit card or financial information to someone claiming to be from Microsoft tech support.
    • To report a Microsoft Technical Support Scam go to: support.microsoft.com/reportascam

Microsoft Opens Its Wallet, Donates $2M And 200 Tablets To Youth Organizations

Tis the season of giving. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang and his wife Lori recently announced a $1 million donation to non-profit City Year. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation granted $500,000 to CARE in India. Napster founder and former Facebook President Sean Parker gave $24 million to Stanford to build an allergy research facility.

Today, Microsoft joined that list by donating $2 million in software to NBC-sponsored charities.

HP Stream 7 with Windows 8.1

And, to put some icing on the cake, Microsoft also donated 200 HP Stream Windows tablets to the same charities so they’ll have hardware to run that software. Microsoft’s New York District General Manager Reid Downey gave NBC viewers a look at the 7-inch HP Stream tablets, which run Windows 8.1 and have Office 365.

This isn’t Microsoft’s first donation to the annual Holiday Toy and Gift Drive on NBC’s TODAY show. In fact, Microsoft has donated for the past 14 years. This year, the donation is part of Microsoft’s YouthSpark program, which has committed to helping 300 million youth find opportunities in education, entrepreneurship, and employment globally.

The YouthSpark program estimates that it has already about 227 million young people and hopes to hit its goal of 300 million in 2015.

Irish government and European parliament member side with Microsoft

Today, Microsoft is set to gain two more allies in its defense against the United States government, in an ongoing court case regarding a US warrant for customer data that is being stored in servers in Ireland. Both the Irish government and an European MEP, have now filed amicus briefs in support of the stance that Microsoft has taken, joining the ranks of many other US tech companies and concerned bodies who have done the same.
In the ongoing case the US government produced a local warrant that requested Microsoft hand over one of its customer’s emails. However as these emails were being stored in data centers in Ireland, where most of its EU based servers are located, Microsoft refused to comply with the warrant. We do not know the nationality of the customer in question, but it stands to reason that they are an EU citizen, as most of the data that Microsoft holds for its customers is stored in servers that are geographically nearby.

The reasoning that Microsoft is trying to use to win this case is that, where the data is located matters. In other words, if your data is being held in Ireland and you are an EU citizen, then the US has no right to request access to that data by serving a warrant to a US company. This is backed up by EU laws as well that prohibit companies from moving customer data outside of the EU, unless there are privacy protections in place.
On the other hand the US government is arguing that when data is uploaded to the cloud it has no physical location and it also ceases to belong exclusively to you as you give the cloud provider rights to move it around its network.
EU MEP Albrecht – who filed one of the briefs - serves as vice-chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. He said the following: “European law in effect forbids the transfer of personal data to third countries (including the United States) unless the recipient has established ‘European-style’ protections to ensure its privacy. For U.S. law to treat data stored in Europe as if it were stored in the United States is a territorial encroachment without justification…”
While there are formal and internationally agreed methods in place for the US to request this data, notably the mutual legal assistance treaty (MLAT), for some reason they do not feel that this will work in this case. These exist to facilitate cooperation between national authorities as traditionally a US warrant is useless in the EU, just as an EU warrant is useless in the US.
Even if the US government does win the case, Microsoft is going to be between a rock and a hard place, as the EU will not take kindly to it breaching privacy protection laws and handing over EU data.

IRS demands former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and other executives to testify over alleged tax fraud

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) -- the U.S. government agency responsible for tax collection and tax law enforcement -- and Microsoft have had a long relationship wherein the former is often of the opinion that the latter isn’t paying as much tax as it should. In the latest chapter in an IRS audit, the government agency is now suing former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, and former Microsoft Business Division President Jeff Raikes, among several other former and current executives. Furthermore, the IRS demands access to the company’s information so that it could decide whether Microsoft paid enough in taxes a decade ago. If found guilty, Microsoft may end up paying millions and billions of dollars.
As mentioned above, this isn’t the first time IRS has set its eyes on the Redmond-based company. The lawsuits, filed on Friday in federal court in Seattle, however, could be the longest-running IRS investigation of Microsoft’s corporate structure. The IRS is keenly interested in the period between 2004 to 2006, where it believes that the company avoided “billions of dollars” by moving software-selling rights between international subsidiaries with lower taxes.
“As a global business, Microsoft adheres carefully to the laws and regulations of every country in which we operate,” the spokesman said.
The IRS is particularly interested in knowing whether the Redmond-based company is complying with the “transfer-pricing” law. The law states that the companies will be charged at a reasonably fair market rate for the goods and services they buy and sell between international arms. This is done to ensure that the companies don’t ship valuable property overseas to avoid U.S. taxes.
The IRS says that the nature of these investigations are routine and crucial for the government as it helps them determine tax liabilities in a system based on self-reporting. The IRS only takes the matter to court when a taxpayer doesn’t comply with the regulations. In response, Microsoft’s lawyers said that the company is cooperating with IRS’s requests. They also noted that have previously made available over 1.2 million pages of documents and allowed the IRS to interview over 50 employees.
As per the court filings, last month IRS sent a summons to Ballmer, and nine other former and current employees, including former Windows and server development chief Jim Allchin, and former chief strategy officer Craig Mundie. A Microsoft attorney said that the company won’t be making the executives available until both the parties agree on the terms for these interviews.

Satya Nadella talks with Prime Minister of India about partnerships and employees

Earlier in November, Microsoft has been named the world's second most valuable brand, according to a Forbes report on earnings and business relevance. Ever since Satya Nadella took over as a CEO there has been a cultural shift in the company, with the focus going forward being repeatedly stated as "mobile-first, cloud-first".
The new strategy seems to be working well so far, and the announcement of Windows 10, along with opening an Insider Program, are showing that Microsoft's relevance will only improve in the future. Also, the new approach of releasing its products to more popular platforms first is extending its reach to the fast-growing number of mobile devices, where the company still has a low market share.
During his first visit to India since his appointment as CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella spent some time with his family in Hyderabad, according to a source that wishes to remain anonymous. He also met with Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.
Even though it was considered a personal visit, Satya said his conversation with the Prime Minister covered a lot of topics, including investments in data centers, electronic manufacturing, and partnerships with "both the Digital India and Make in India". The chief executive was also asked to address the problem of employees in India.

Bill Gates Warns That the World Isn’t Prepared For the Impact of Automisation

We are approaching the age of automation, a time in which machines, robots, and software will dominate the labour market. But, unlike the industrial age, which brought with it a plethora of jobs, automation will render many human workers obsolete, and we’re not ready to deal with this consequence, according to Microsoft impresario Bill Gates.
Speaking at economic think tank The American Enterprise Institute on Thursday, Gates said, “Software substitution, whether it’s for drivers or waiters or nurses […] it’s progressing […] Technology over time will reduce demand for jobs, particularly at the lower end of skill set […] 20 years from now, labor demand for lots of skill sets will be substantially lower. I don’t think people have that in their mental model.”
In terms of solutions, Gates posits that tax codes could be changed to encourage companies to employ people over machines, even suggesting scrapping income and payroll taxes entirely.
