Havok Technology Helped 343i’s 60 FPS Goal In Halo 5: Guardians

A press release today revealed that Havok technology is used extensively in Halo 5: Guardians; specifically, the AI, Physics and Script modules of Havok are featured.
343 Industries worked closely with the team at Havok to integrate Havok AI to help bring to life the game characters. The Havok Physics effects are used throughout the environment to lend the title an immersive physicality that helps draw players deeper into the compelling Halo universe.
David Berger, Director of Engineering at 343 Industries, openly said that it was thanks to Havok technology that the studio was able to maintain its lofty goal of steady 60FPS in Halo 5: Guardians.

In creating Halo 5: Guardians, the team pushed the Xbox One hardware to maintain a steady 60 frames per second for lightning-quick reaction times and visceral gameplay, and Havok’s efficient toolset helped us to reach that goal. Every element of this game had to be truly epic. The graphics, sound, music, story, AI and multiplayer features were each a massive undertaking, and our collaboration with Havok gave us a robust toolset to round out the features to create something that gamers won’t forget.
Halo 5: Guardians released on October 27 exclusively for Xbox One. Priced at $/€ 59.99, the game went on to become the biggest Halo launch in history and fastest selling Xbox One exclusive to date. Microsoft disclosed that it earned more than $400 million in global sales of the game and related hardware, pushing the franchise total to over $5 billion.
Moreover, the game earned a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the most watched video game launch broadcast, with over 330K unique streams on the broadcast’s evening. Havok, on the other hand, has been acquired last month by Microsoft, though it has been confirmed that its technology will still be licensed to competitors as well.

Major Halo 5 Update Delivers 16-Player Vehicular Spartanslaughter To Alien Battlefields

At this point, Halo 5 hasn't even been out for an entire month, but it's already proving to be one of the hottest, most fun titles of the year. And you if not for the fact that a certain little title called Fallout 4 just came out, Halo 5 would still be the market's current darling. As we reported at the start of the month, the game sold $400 million worth of copies in its first week, so in all regards, it's proving to be a major success for both 343 Industries and Microsoft.
If you've got the game, you'll be happy to know that new content is not going to take long to get here. That's right, even before you can feel like you've gotten a great taste of the game, more stuff is going to drop. Such as a brand-new big team battle mode, Shinobi armor, and a slew of new REQs.
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...nt/Warthog.jpg
343 isn't laying all of the goods on the table, but perhaps the most major part of this update will be the big team battle mode. It's said that this will launch with 4 maps, and each will be 8v8. You'll spot elements from maps in earlier titles, so these could be verbatim copies that are just updated with improved artwork. You'll also be able to hop into many different warthogs and other vehicles.
On the REQ front, there are a ton of things to seek out, all ranging between common and legendary rarity. Of note on the legendary side is the Tundra Mantis, a killing machine that looks great, and appears to be quite agile.

Also noteworthy is an "ultra rare" item that's not being revealed at all. Who wants to place bets on how long it will take someone to find this mysterious item? Of similar note, the cool new Shinobi armor set is also ultra rare, but if you can't score that, you might have better luck seeking out the Tracer armor set which should be much more common.

There's been no definitive release date given for this update, but the wait should be worth it. Why? Because it's absolutely free. Gotta love that!

Halo 5 Unranked Playlists Being Worked On By 343 Industries; Warzone Assault Fix Incoming

The latest Halo installment has been released in late October exclusively for Xbox One, featuring the brand new Warzone mode in multiplayer. In Warzone, up to 24 human players join the battle in maps up to four times larger than any previous Halo map; there are two variants of Warzone, one of which even includes AI opponents making the fight even more chaotic.

This mode has been promoted a lot since before launch as the “casual” way to play Halo 5 multiplayer, opposed to the Ranked Arena matches. However, there’s a large crowd that would like the ability to join Halo 5 unranked playlists, and this became a hot debate on the Team Beyond forums.
Eventually, 343 Industries’ Executive Producer Josh Holmes (registered as Sal1ent on the board) replied that Halo 5 unranked matches are coming to the game:
There was no insidious motivation behind going all ranked for Arena. That was the design intent of the team working on that experience. That said, we’ve heard the requests and we are actively working towards supporting unranked playlists for Arena in a future update. It may seem straightforward on the surface but lighting up unranked play in Arena is not as simple as flipping a switch.
TLDR; We hear you, and are working on it.

This should certainly make some people happy. Holmes is also very active on Twitter, by the way, and there he confirmed that a fix for an exploit in Warzone Assault (the variant without AI) is coming.

@elmusix96 We have a fix in the works.

In related news, the first free content update titled Battle of Shadow and Light has been released a few hours ago, with the main addition being the Big Team Battle mode.

At Least $700,000 Spent On 'Halo 5: Guardians' REQ Packs, Halo World Championship Tournament Prize Pool Swells

Along with the launch of Halo 5: Guardians, Microsoft and the game's developer, 343 Industries, will kick off the Halo World Championship in December, where various teams will compete in the game's Arena multiplayer mode for fame and money.
The prize pool started at $1 million, with the potential for the pot to grow with every purchase of REQ packs in Halo 5. Now, the company is reporting that the pool has grown to $1.7 million. That means that players spent at least $700,000 on the game's microtransaction feature.
These REQ packs contain various cards to use in online gameplay such as one-time use items, cosmetic equipment, and more powerful weapons. You can gain the same cards with in-game points, but for those who want to gain it faster, real-world money can be used to buy the same packs. A portion of each purchase goes to the prize pool, so the actual amount of money spent on REQ packs could be higher, but Microsoft didn't release that exact number.
This type of crowdfunding isn't exactly new, with the most notable example being Valve's Dota 2 championship tournament, The International. Players bought a digital item called "The Compendium," and 25 percent of each purchase goes towards the prize pool. The Compendium contains various cosmetic upgrades to the game, such as new weather effects for the map, new taunts for each hero, and even music packs.

Halo 5 has now generated more than $1 million in microtransactions

Despite controversy and heating arguments, Microsoft and the Halo devs at 343 Industries are raking in serious cash with Halo 5's paid microtransactions. Since the game was released two months ago, gamers have now spent over $1 million on Halo 5's optional REQ packs, pretty much ensuring that microtransactions will be permanent fixtures in the Halo universe.

The official Halo website clearly stated the staggering REQ pack earnings in a recent post. A new Halo 5 update also revealed that the Halo Championship prize pool has reached $2 million and growing thanks to the in-game "crowd-funding" gleaned from REQ packs.

Apart from actual game sales, Halo 5 continues to generate huge cash flows at a rapid pace. The most current $1 million sales is up from $700,000 earned as of November 19, and the $500,000 earned in less than two weeks after the game's release.

As 343 Industries and Microsoft put a portion of all REQ pack sales towards the championship prize pool, the actual sales revenue exceeds $1 million. Since we don't know the actual percentage of earnings that's put into the prize pool, we can only speculate how much money Microsoft has collected so far. It could be well over $1 million, or a little over. Keep in mind that 343i does plan to release updates and free maps throughout the game's lifecycle, and these profits are used to fuel further development.

In any case, this trend is unsettling to say the least. I feel that Halo 5 was created with this system in mind, and is little more than an experimental FPS business model akin to the failed Evolve and Bungie's mega-popular (yet lackluster) MMMOFPS Destiny. Even after earning huge cash flows in game and expansion sales, Destiny has taken a weird microtransaction-fueled development structure as well.

Seeing how much cash that's being pulled in via REQ packs fills me with a very real sense of dismay, and I envision a future where gamers can't tell where the microtransactions end and the game begins. Do publishers and developers really need to stoop to these levels to sell games? What's next? Product placement deals? Pay-to-win weaponry? EXP-boosters that level you up without having to actually play?

343i promises to bring updates like new maps, modes and the massive new Forge mode to Halo 5, but with every "free" content refresh, it'll also release a new batch of REQ packs to ensure the cycle continues.

At some point we have to ask ourselves if any of this is actually free or not, but then again what you spend your money on is up to you. Just remember that when you do buy into this kind of thing, you're participating in something that could change the landscape of gaming altogether.

Halo 5: Guardians Getting Free Content Update Next Week, New Maps, REQ and More

Next week 343 Industries is going to push out a free content update for Halo 5: Guardians to everyone that’s called the Cartographers Gift. This’ll have new content and of course restarts the season of competitive multiplayer for everyone.

Halo 5: Guardians free update includes a new rocket launcher, skill sold separately.

In this update there’ll be four new maps, one for Warzone and three for Arena mode. Judging by the names alone, they should add quite a bit of variety. New REQ is also making its way into the update, with new weapons, armor and even emblems to help you stand out on the battlefield.
The real exciting piece is the introduction of the SPNKr Rocket Launcher. This dual-tubed destructive wonder will be available in three different varieties that increase in their rarity. I can already predict the fun new kill montages that’ll pop-up after this gets released.

Halo 5 Guardians is the latest entry of the Halo series developed by 343 Industries. The game doesn’t play all that differently from previous Halo games, with players exploring a variety of locations in first person view mode. The game also features a third person view mode during cutscenes and specific gameplay sequences. The basic Halo gameplay experience has also been enriched with some new features such as Spartan Abilities, new mobility options, NPC Spartans present during most of the game that can receive orders from the player and more. The already mentioned Forge mode is also another very interesting feature which expands the Halo 5 experienceconsiderably.
Halo 5 Guardians is now available in all regions exclusively on Xbox One. Forge maps are getting shared online quite frequently and we will show you the more interesting ones as soon as possible.

Halo 5 Infinity's Armory update brings back the Halo 2 battle rifle

Halo 5 is getting a lot of great post-launch servicing. 343 Industries has been very responsive with timely updates that have fixed performance and added in some value.

The newest patch coming soon, called Infinity's Armory, is all about new weapons and armor making an appearance. You'll find three new sets of armor with one of them based on one of the legendary pieces worn by the Master Chief in Halo: Combat Evolved, the Mark V Alpha. And for those that don't want a classic set, they're introducing an Achilles and Atlas sets of armor, designed to intimidate your enemies. Well, they both have a very cool and distinct visual style.

And why would they include some classic armor if they didn't also want to bring back one of the more iconic weapons in the series as well. So the battle rifle from Halo 2, though it's more of a modern interpretation of it. It does differ significantly from the current one, however.

And of course new updates to Halo 5 means more maps. And this time we're getting Riptide and Urban. Riptide is a map that's been designed for Arena Mode while Urban has been designed for Warzone Assault, an has a lot of great hiding places for snipers. It's a new location on Noctus.

Inside the new patch are also a lot of new weapon skins and emblems so you can make your Spartan unique.

Halo 5 Player Recreates Super Mario 64 Princess Peach Castle In New Forge Map

In the months following Halo 5’s release on Xbox One, players have been creating all sorts of multiplayer maps through the Forge features. Some didn’t stop at just creating completely new maps, though, with maps trying to recreate locations from popular games such as Metal Gear Solid’s Shadow Moses and others also showing up. Earlier today another one of these Halo 5 Forge map recreating locations from other games has been made available.

Halo 5 player Bearskopff has managed to recreate Peach Castle from Super Mario 64 in a new forge map. The results of his hard work are amazing, as the map manages to recreate the same atmosphere of the original location. To download and play the map, players only need to search the Bearskopff Gamertag. A few screenshots of the map have also been shared and you can check them out right below.

Halo 5 MP “Has The Best Player Retention Other Than Halo 3”; Balancing Continually Improved

The multiplayer mode of Halo 5 has the best player retention of any Halo game other than Halo 3, and 343i ” is constantly striving to balance ping, ability to match, time to match, and skill balance”.

343’s studio head, Josh Holmes, said this on the Teambeyond forums overnight. Matchmaking improvements for Halo 5: Guardians were announced a few days ago on the official Halo waypoint community blog.
However, it hasn’t been without hiccups. There are a few areas where matchmaking is falling short of our goals and not providing the experience that we would prefer for allplayers. With this in mind, the services and multiplayer teams here at 343 Industries have been hard at work at improving and fine tuning the Halo 5 matchmaking experience. Work continues on geographic, infrastructure and code-based solutions. This game is a service, and we’ll continue to improve it throughout its lifespan.
    Advertisements
Following some criticism regarding ping times, skill balance, and matchmaking time, Holmes replied that 343i ” constantly striving to balance ping, ability to match, time to match, skill balance and hopper population”. The studio head adds that, the studio is aware of the fact that issues regarding matchmaking haven’t been solved, and they are “continually working to improve”.
343’s studio head also had some interesting details to share on the game’s multiplayer player retention. According Holmes, Halo 5: Guardians’ multiplayer mode has the “best player retention of any Halo game, other than Halo 3″.
I’m not downplaying the importance of matchmaking speed, but getting stomped can be really discouraging. It can lead to players dropping out of the game permanently, especially if it happens early in their experience (based on data). For what it’s worth, H5 MP has the best player retention of any Halo game other than H3. So to some degree the close matches seem to be working. That said, it may not be optimal for all hoppers and there is always room for improvement.
Quite a feat, considering the massive success of Halo 3’s multiplayer.

Podracing Mod for Halo 5 Isn’t Perfect but a Lot of Fun

Star Wars is an awesome book and movie series and one of the things that a lot of people would love to experience from the series besides the light sabers are the pod racers. I’m also sure that most agree that it was also one of the best things in Phantom Menace. Up until now there hasn’t been much in that direction for us gamers, sure there was the Podracing game for N64, but that’s about it. Luckily there are a lot of games that feature a great modding ability and where fans can are able to create their own pod racing games.
Modder CaptainDireWolf must be one of the people besides me that love the idea of pod racing and thanks to Halo 5’s Forge Map tools he created an almost working mod. While the mod is buggy and doesn’t fully work as a racing game, it’s still a great idea, fun to watch, and the video below is at least worth to watch.

The designer created a playable, yet limited, pod racing multiplayer mode that reminds us a lot of the Star Wars Episode 1: Podracer game for the N64. You’re able to use multiple pod racers in this mod called Boonta Eve, but you can’t really win the game. You can kill your enemies or you can just enjoy the fun of the race. One of the problems arises when you die, you can’t respawn with a racer again. All in all, it’s very simple, but that’s due to the limitations of Halo 5 more than anything else.

While this isn’t the ideal mod nor the best platform to make it on, I hope that it will inspire someone else to create a proper pod racing mod in another game, a game that is more suited for a racing mod like this. I would surely like a fun and fastpaced pod racing game for PC and I’m sure that I’m not the only one.

Halo 5 is getting a singlular $25 microtransaction for REQ

Microtransactions are a fact of life now, something that's inevitable in any online multiplayer experience. Of course there's a right way and a wrong way to implement them, and in this case, the $25 spent within Halo 5 is actually the right way; for optional items only.

The new singular Arena REQ bundle contains a whole host of different armor, weapon and other skins to help you define your individuality within the Halo universe. You don't want to be just any ol' Spartan, now do you? But this is a limited offer with 14 separate packs smashed together that have "Mythic" and "Legendary" items that you likely won't find elsewhere. It'll be available starting February 16th.

But, even though it seems like a lot of money, it's cosmetic only and doesn't change the gameplay or give you an advantage. Aside from people staring at your newly applied weapon, armor and other skins. So don't fret, because you don't have to buy it.

Here's how you can play Rocket League in Halo 5

Rocket League was one of the surprise hits of 2015. The highly addictive soccer-style game is heading to Xbox One later this month, but what if you can't wait that long? If you happen to have Halo 5, you can get your fix right now with this Rocket League-inspired multiplayer map from map maker TurbTastic.
In the Halo 5 version of Rocket League, players ride on the game's Ghost vehicles and attempt to push a ball into the opponent's goal. Unlike an earlier version, this version actually keeps score through the clever use of scripting and teleporters. There's a small version for 2-6 players with one ball and a larger version for 8-16 players with three balls.
If you'd rather wait for the real thing, it'll be landing on Xbox One on February 17.

Halo 5 Has Amassed Over $1.5 Million in Microtransactions

Microtransactions were originally implemented on mobile games which adopted the free-to-play business model. This gave developers the freedom to create a large user-base among casual players and attempt to monetize their creation through optional micropayments. As we all know, this can be a very flawed concept and involve an absurd amount of grinding to experience the game without paying any money. Unfortunately, microtransactions have become an integral component of modern gaming and even included in full priced releases. This is really shocking because microtransctions were designed for a free entry point and not an additional source of revenue for $60 titles. One pertinent example is Halo 5 which allowed players to purchase weapons and items for the Warzone multiplayer mode.
In theory, you can acquire credits through gameplay and there’s no obligation to pay real money. However, it is fairly insulting considering one of the packs has an eye-watering price of $100. These payments go towards funding Halo eSports events which might encourage users to adopt a more forgiving attitude towards these microtransactions. According to Microsoft, the Halo World Championship prize pool has increased to a whopping $2.5 million:
“Since we first announced a starting prize pool of $1 million at gamescom 2015, the winnings for the Halo World Championship has grown immensely due to community crowd-funding via the Halo 5: Guardians REQ System. The final prize pool is now locked and players will compete to win their slice of $2.5 million at the Halo World Championship. And if being the best Halo team in the world wasn’t enough of an incentive, this might be: the first place team will take home a total of $1 million – the biggest individual prize pool in console esports history.”
This means the game has made at least $1.5 million through REQ pack sales. It’s quite shocking to see players spend so much money on multiplayer packs, and emphasizes how rapidly the industry is progressing into competitive play. I do worry though because it’s alienating single player gamers, and the constant onslaught of microtransaction is making consumers very wary of game publishers in the long-term.
