PS4 loses Hellblade exclusive because consoles are “years behind” PC

Ninja Theory has made some stellar games, some of which include the rebooted DmC, the horribly underrated Enslaved and Heavenly Sword. They also happened to develop my favourite original Xbox game, Kung Fu Chaos. But enough obout old-generations – we’re all about the the new generation, where the PS4 just lost Ninja Theory’s new title as an exclusive.

PC Gamer has revealed that Hellblade, the brand new Ninja Theory title, will also be coming to PC along with PS4. Studio creative chief Tameem Antoniades sees this not only as a chance to reach a bigger audience, but also future-proof the hack and slash title with the aid of mods and regular updates.
I think we want to get to the point where we can invite players and fans to add to the game, and do things that are unexpected, and suggest ideas or add-ons that can make the game richer.
Antoniades also loves the fact that newer consoles are following PC architecture, but still believes they’re years behind the marketing and performance potential of the PC platform.
We’re looking at everything we do on this project and figuring out better ways of doing things compared to how the traditional AAA console model works. And consoles are following suit with PC, but I think they’re years behind what things like Steam are doing. If we want to do an open beta right now, it’s a little bit trickier to do that than on PC.
Not every publisher has let us [host a beta], because of the secrecy that goes into consoles and publisher-based businesses. As an independent we have the freedom to do that.

Hellblade was revealed at Gamescom last year with the teaser trailer below. It’s easily one of the most anticipated titles coming in 2015, and it’s great to see that more people will now have the chance to experience it. Could more exclusives come to PC purely because of testing convenience?

    Soundtrack to Hellblade Previewed

Music is one thing within video games that has evolved drastically over the past decade. Soundtracks have become slight after as a composition medium even for some larger more favors composers, and indeed game soundtracks have come a long way from their simple yet memorable beginnings to the multi pieced orchestras of today.

Hellblade should have one absolutely amazing soundtrack with Andy Leblegua in charge of it.

Just recently, the developers of Hellblade, Ninja Theory, released a new video that goes into detail about the soundtrack to their upcoming game. They mention how they really wanted the soundtrack to be a large part of the game, and they recognize the importance that the soundtrack has on helping to create the overall atmosphere of a game, and they say they wanted the music to be a part of the creative process from the beginning. Music, and a proper soundtrack can even help to define the game if it’s implemented correctly.
For them, they enlisted the help of Andy Leplegua, the founder of Icon of Coil, Combchrist and Panzer AG, to spearhead the development of their soundtrack. A great opportunity for such a talented musician. Andy Leplegua and Combchrist were contracted to do some of the soundtrack of Devil May Cry, the critically acclaimed reboot of the Devil May Cry series of games.
The initial pieces of music that can be heard throughout the developers diary are all very dark in nature and seem to evoke feelings of melancholy and anger. It’s very warlike and intense in its sound. In a very good move, the developers have given Andy Leplegua access to the entire story and the characters so that he may customize the sound to help give more depth to the characters and to highlight big moments in the game. Andy really seems to be going to great lengths to offer a very large and, well, epic feel.

They wanted him to develop music that has a Viking feel to it for combat scenes that may feature Vikings, though Andy insisted on working on the entire soundtrack in order to maintain a more consistent and seamless experience.
So it does cause me to raise my eyebrow as to what direction they are taking and why they are taking it with their soundtrack. While I appreciate the dark mood it sets, Celtic music differed greatly from that of the Vikings and they are not interchangeable.
That being said, the music presented is actually quite good, and I am certainly a fan of Andy Lepeluga and his talents. The previous soundtracks from Ninja Theory have all been a very large part of the overall experience, and have been memorable.
Hellblade currently doesn’t have a release date, though we can expect it sometime this year. The game should feature a fluid yet brutal combat system with deep character development and a very inspired story. If it’s like Ninja Theory’s past games, then it should actually prove to be quite nice. It follows the protagonist, Senua, on her journey through the Celtic underworld in what seems to be the dark ages. Curiously, Senua is a common misspelling of the Celtic goddess Senuna, who archaeologists believe is very similar to Minerva, though no real record of anything more than her existence has been found yet.

Hellblade – Unreal Engine 4 Hack & Slash; New Video Shows off a Unique Approach to Performance Capture

Hellblade is a third person action game being developed by Ninja Theory for the PlayStation 4 and PC. Ninja Theory is the developer of DmC: Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.

Ninja Theory’s Product Development Manager Dominic Matthews, explains:
As a studio we strive to create believable characters that you as a player care about. A week doesn’t go by without us receiving a letter or email from someone telling us that they’ve been moved by our characters. This fills us with a great sense of pride. In Hellblade, our upcoming PlayStation 4 title, we will take you on the harrowing journey Senua; a Celtic warrior plunged into hell. It is important to us that we represent Senua and her story honestly and believably.
Fundamental to our approach is using performance capture to bring our characters to life. Performance capture is a technology that we pioneered in the development of our 2007 PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavenly Sword and one that we are continuing to use, and evolve, in Hellblade.
Ninja Theory Creative Chief Tameem Antoniades explained to PC Gamer regarding Hellblade on PC:
“I think PC offers us a level of freedom that we haven’t had before,”
“We’re looking at everything we do on this project and figuring out better ways of doing things compared to how the traditional AAA console model works. And consoles are following suit with PC, but I think they’re years behind what things like Steam are doing. If we want to do an open beta right now, it’s a little bit trickier to do that than on PC. Playtesting is a huge thing for us. Usability testing, getting people hands-on to try things out, get feedback, then roll that back in and improve the game… it’s always been essential for us to do that. Not every publisher has let us, because of the secrecy that goes into consoles and publisher-based businesses. As an independent we have the freedom to do that.”

Ninja Theory aims for Hellblade to be future proof, by possibly supporting 4K and even Mods,
“I think we want to get to the point where we can invite players and fans to add to the game, and do things that are unexpected, and suggest ideas or add-ons that can make the game richer.”
Ninja Theory has released a new development diary video focused on Hellblade’s unique performance capture approach.

The small glimpse of the cinematic scene that you saw at the end of the development diary is from our Vertical Slice that we are currently busy finalising. Our Vertical Slice is a small section of the game that we are taking to a finished, polished state. It is in the Vertical Slice development phase that we have discovered exactly what the Hellblade experience is, bringing together the results of our prototyping and realising the creative vision in-game for the first time.

Ninja Theory will be sharing much more of the Vertical Slice in the next few months, showing Hellblade gameplay for the first time and revealing more about Senua’s story.

More on Hellblade will be revealed at E3 2015. You can follow Hellblade and Ninja Theory’s open development at Hellblade.com, follow on twitter @ninjatheory and through their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ninjatheory. We will bring you any new information on Hellblade as soon as it becomes available. Be sure to check out our previous coverage for more, here and here.

Ninja Theory reveals more details on Hellblade

Ninja Theory, the developer behind the Devil May Cry reboot along with other action titles like Heavenly Sword, has revealed more details on its upcoming title, Hellblade, which was announced at E3 last year.
In a pre-E3 trailer, we meet the main character, Senua, who suffers from various hallucinations and hears voices in her head. Her mindset is going to be one of the key focus points of the game, as you explore the world and trigger memories of the past.

Hellblade – First Gameplay Trailer for the PC/PS4 Unreal Engine 4 Title Released; Dev Diary talks about Mental Health Theme

Ninja Theory has released a new trailer for Hellblade, just in time for E3 2015, which includes the first gameplay footage of the game.

You can view the Hellblade E3 2015 Trailer below:

Hellblade tells the story of Senua and her journey into the hell of her mental illness

Hellblade tells the story of Celtic warrior Senua and her journey into Hell. The Hell in question is no ordinary Hell, but is in fact a Hell that is the manifestation of Senua’s mental illness. Senua experiences psychosis, including hallucinations and delusions, as well as suffering from anxiety and depression. Players will witness Senua’s living nightmare through her own eyes.

From George Orwell’s 1984, to George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, the best fantasy breaks down barriers and lets us see the world without prejudice. This is what the talented team at Ninja Theory wants to do with Hellblade. To see the world through Senua’s eyes, and in doing so, address a subject that is still considered taboo.
Developing Hellblade independently gives the team the freedom to tackle a subject as challenging as mental health.

It is a subject being handled with all the respect it deserves, ensuring that the portrayal of Senua’s condition is both accurate and sensitive.

In order to ensure a sensitive and accurate portrayal of the subject, Ninja Theory has been working closely with Psychiatrist and Professor of Health and Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge, Paul Fletcher, as well as arranging to consult with people who have experience of mental health difficulties.
    Paul Fletcher explains:

“True understanding of mental health is not simply about books, lectures or verbal descriptions but from deeper engagement on all levels. Working with Ninja Theory has shown me the potential that gaming has for sharing in a character’s experiences and engendering empathy in ways that go well beyond those offered by simple academic descriptions. Maybe this approach will contribute powerful new ways of challenging stigma.”
Tameem Antoniades, Chief Creative Director at Ninja Theory, states:
“In Hellblade we are pursuing creative independence in order to explore a compelling subject matter and gaming experience that would not be possible under the current retail model. In movie terms, this would be a quality independent film, not a Hollywood blockbuster. Digital self-publishing means that we can offer a smaller, but high quality game at around half the price of retail games.”

Hellblade is supported by the Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation which aims to build a greater public understanding of science, and in particular health.

Iain Dodgeon, Creative Partnerships Manager at the Wellcome Trust, adds:
“More and more, games have an exciting and innovative role to play in giving us new perspectives on health and mental health challenges. Rather than being a didactic game teaching us about psychosis, Hellblade allows us to explore it through the creation of a compelling and complex character, and the world that she inhabits.
In a new development diary Ninja Theory talks about the mental health theme in Hellblade further and their approach to tackling it.

Hellblade is currently under development for the PlayStation 4 and PC with a planned release for 2016. We will bring you any new information on Hellblade as soon as it becomes available.

Hellblade Dev Diary Reveals Dark Visual Language of Senua

Ninja Theory has released another behind the scenes look at the making of Hellblade, showing us the visual language and style that they used, and why they chose to use it.

Hellblade dev diary takes us deep into what it means to make a character seem ‘real’.

In the video, the developers talk about the process they went through in order to differentiate Senua from the usual characters found in games. They want you to be able to relate to her on some level.
“We wanted to make a real character, someone that you could look into and you felt ‘this isn’t a costume,’ that this is a real person”

The idea is to create a character that seemed as if she actually could have been from that time period, breaking away from the typical heroine style that might rely solely on sexuality for entertainment. The image of Senua invokes a sense of having a real history, a dark past and a very complex personality. Of course the game shows us also what she interprets as reality as a result of her mental illness.
All in all it’s a much darker take than is usually seen from Ninja Theory, or a lot of developers. That and it’s a far more realistic take on life while at the same time being very fantastical in nature.
Hellblade will focus on three critical elements; melee combat, deep character-driven story, and a unique art vision. Taking those to the next level. Hellblade is currently under development for the PlayStation 4 and PC with a planned release for 2016. We will bring you any new information on Hellblade as soon as it becomes available.

New Expanded Hellblade Cinematic ‘Gameplay’ Trailer Explores Senua’s Mental Illness

Ninja Theory has posted a new cinematic trailer of Hellblade. This trailer takes place entirely in-game and gives us a glimpse of precisely how they’re handling the visualization and translation of Senua’s mental illness.

The expanded Hellblade trailer shows surprising depth in just a few short minutes.

The trailer is an expansion upon the official E3 trailer we showed you in June. It brings more environmental footage as well as combat footage, showing more than just what we were introduced to at E3. The cinematic style they’re shooting for is certainly showcased here, likened perhaps to Max Payne, though with a different ambiance.
In the trailer we see Senua struggle with what sound like they could be auditory hallucinations, though it isn’t necessarily clear. The nexus between what’s real and what isn’t seems to walk a very fine line in Hellblade. It continues on to show off the environment, replete with shiny weather effects and lots of rain, likely to emphasize the mental state of Senua. The combat is a little slow, perhaps, though this is still a very early build.
Hellblade will focus on three critical elements; melee combat, deep character-driven story, and a unique art vision. Taking those to the next level. Hellblade is currently under development for the PlayStation 4 and PC with a planned release for 2016. Thus far it’s looking quite good, even at such an early stage.

New Hellblade Video Details Face Creation of ‘Senua’

Developer Ninja Theory has released a new development diary, detailing the face creation of the game’s protagonist ‘Senua’. According Ninja Theory, Senua’s face is their most “believable” face to date.

The new video is part of Ninja Theory’s development diary. Development progress for the upcoming title, can be followed on http://www.hellblade.com.

Hellblade was announced this year and tells the story of a Celtic warrior’s journey into the heart of a Viking clan and her experiences with psychosis.

Digital self-publishing means that we can offer a smaller, but high quality game at around half the price of retail games.”
Ninja Theory is also known for their PS3 exclusive ‘Heavenly Sword’, which released back in 2007. Although the game’s main protagonist does share some similarities, Hellbade isn’t tied to Heavenly Sword in any way, according Ninja Theory’s product development manager Dominic Matthews.
“No, it’s not,” Matthews said in an interview with Eurogamer. “It’s a brand new IP. Senua is a new character. It’s not tied to Heavenly Sword at all.
“I saw someone describe the name as someone just putting Heavenly Sword into Thesaurus.com and going, oh it’s Hellblade. It’s not something where we’ve gone, yeah, let’s make people think it is this. We really like Heavenly Sword. We loved making that game. So it’s actually more just we like making female protagonists that look in a certain style. And we like swords. And we like hell. It’s more that”
The game will be available for PC and PS4 in 2016.

Hellblade Confirmed For 2016 Launch; PC & PS4 Releases To Be Simultaneous

UK developer NInja Theory today confirmed Hellblade for a 2016 release. In a previous tweet, they also mentioned that PlayStation 4 and PC versions of the game will be out at the same time, contradicting previous rumors of a timed exclusive for PS4.

Hellblade has been described by the studio as an independent AAA game. Senua, the game’s protagonist, embarks on a personal journey in the titular hellish world which is actually a manifestation of her mental illness, a topic that Ninja Theory mentioned will be central to the game.
Of course, given Ninja Theory’s pedigree (Kung Fu Chaos, Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and DMC: Devil May Cry) we can expect kick-ass action combat to be featured heavily.
The team already published 19 developer diaries and you can check them all in this YouTube playlist.

You can check even more about Hellblade (which earned itself a Special Mention among our Most Anticipated Action Adventure Games) on the official website, though it’s not the only project Ninja Theory is working on.

Happy New Year! In 2016 we release our first independent game in #Hellblade & continue work across a number of exciting projects!

New Hellblade Video Shows Senua’s Natural & Responsive Movement

A new video for Ninja Theory’s upcoming action game, Hellblade, shows Senua’s natural and responsive movement.

The video is part of Ninja Theory’s development diary for their independent AAA title, which will release on both the PS4 and PC, somewhere this year.
In the development video we can discern the game’s main heroin, Senua, walking through smoke, and beam-crossing. Check out the video down below:

Hellblade was initially announced as a PS4 title during Gamescom 2014. However, a PC version was announced in January 2015. Ninja Theory has stated that they are considering to add MOD and 4K support for the PC version.

Tameem Antoniades, Chief Creative Director at Ninja Theory, said: “In Hellblade we are pursuing creative independence in order to explore a compelling subject matter and gaming experience that would not be possible under the current retail model. In movie terms, this would be a quality independent film, not a Hollywood blockbuster. Digital self-publishing means that we can offer a smaller, but high quality game at around half the price of retail games.”

Mental health and psychosis are the key themes explored in Hellblade. Inspired by historical events, Hellblade tells the story of Senua, a Celtic warrior who is left traumatised by a Viking invasion. This third person action game, will follow Senua’s journey into a vision of hell that is the manifestation of her own mental illness.
Developer Ninja Theory is of course known for their PS3 exclusive ‘Heavenly Sword’, which released back in 2007.
An official release date hasn’t been set for Hellblade, but is slated for a release this year.
