LibreOffice gets overhaul for 4.4.0 release

The Document Foundation has announced the release of LibreOffice 4.4 with what is claimed to be a completely overhauled user interface which ditches the 90s aesthetic of previous versions.

Launched in 2011 as a fork of the OpenOffice.org project following community displeasure with Oracle's control, LibreOffice has become the most popular open source productivity suite around. Its code base has undergone considerable revision since the fork, but its user interface - heavily inspired by the Microsoft Office releases of the late 90s and early 2000s - has been relatively stagnant. Its latest release, LibreOffice 4.4.0, is the Document Foundation's attempt to change that.

'LibreOffice 4.4 has got a lot of UX [user experience] and design love, and in my opinion is the most beautiful ever,' claimed Jan 'Kendy' Holesovsky, leader of the design team at the Document Foundation. 'We have completed the dialogue conversion, redesigned menu bars, context menus, toolbars, status bars and rulers to make them much more useful. The Sifr monochrome icon theme is extended and now the default on OS X. We also developed a new Colour Selector, improved the Sidebar to integrate more smoothly with menus, and reworked many user interface details to follow today's UX trends.'

While the most obvious changes are visual, the underlying software is much-improved as well. The quality of the code base has been boosted following an analysis by specialist Coverity, while compatibility with the Microsoft OOXML file format has been improved. OpenGL acceleration of slide transitions is now supported in the Windows build of LibreOffice Impress, while all platforms can enjoy significantly boosted media capabilities.

A full list of release notes is available on the official website, as is the free download itself.

LibreOffice Heads To The Cloud With LibreOffice Online

LibreOffice claims to be one of the world's best free and open source office suites. Users can download the app for any desktop OS, or it can run on a virtual platform on Chrome OS, Firefox OS and iOS. Additionally, LibreOffice is currently in development for Android.
Even with its wide availability, the company has yet to create its software for the cloud. That changed today when it announced LibreOffice Online.

In order to create LibreOffice Online, the organization collaborated with IceWarp for its synchronization software, and Collabora, a company that has expertise with helping companies take the open source route. According to The Document Foundation, the organization behind LibreOffice, the process of getting LibreOffice online started in 2011 with a running prototype of the online version using HTML5.
With this new product, the organization seeks to challenge other office suites in the market, specifically calling out Google Docs and Office 365. LibreOffice Online will also be the first suite to support the Open Document Format, an XML-based document file format, which makes file conversions easier by "leveraging and reusing existing standards wherever possible."

Considering that the founders of The Document Foundation were former members of OpenOffice.org, one of the earliest open office suites, LibreOffice Online is sure to attract customers. Although Google Docs has a huge number of users, LibreOffice Online has the added advantage of being open source, allowing a large amount of collaboration from developers.
ln any case, it's good to know that there are free, online, and cloud-based alternatives to the likes of Google Docs. Availability for LibreOffice Online has yet to be announced, but this announcement is a sure sign that it's in the final stages and almost ready for launch.

LibreOffice 5.0 Released. x86 and x86-64 Builds for Windows.

On the same day that Intel released Skylake for mainstream enthusiasts, The Document Foundation has published LibreOffice 5.0. This version brings a 64-bit version for Windows, which is another baby-step in the application's trend toward performance and stability improvements. There doesn't seem to be too many features to point to, besides new branding images, but it's the first release in their 5.0 branch. It is also numbered 5.0.5 because pre-releases don't want us to have nice things.

Despite having a supported 64-bit version, the 32-bit x86 build is still default when you go to the download page. If you manually select the x86-64 version's installer, it will erase previous, standard installs of LibreOffice 4 x86. I'm not sure if selecting a custom folder will change that, in case you wanted side-by-side installs for some reason, but it is also nice that the installer cleans up the previous version.
You can download it for free from their site. You will need to scroll down for the 64-bit version.

LibreOffice 5.1 released by The Document Foundation

Last Friday we asked HEXUS readers to tell us all about what free software they would always install and recommend on a new build PC. A number of programs stood out as being backed by a large number of you, including the likes of VLC, Audacity, 7zip, GIMP, Notepad++, Paint.NET and LibreOffice. So we have (probably) got good news for you - The Document Foundation has just released LibreOffice 5.1. I say probably, because it comes packing a "completely reorganized user interface," and such design changes are usually not Goldilocks but Marmite...
As a reminder, particularly for those who don't use LibreOffice right now, it is a full featured office suite that offers capable word processor, spreadsheet and presentation applications. LibreOffice is open source and available for Linux, Mac and Windows PCs. The suite is very popular with individuals and organisations alike and has chalked up over 120 million downloads since 2011.

The LibreOffice 5.1 update brings with it headlining changes to the user interface. In the announcement blog post we are told that "LibreOffice 5.1's user interface has been completely reorganized, to provide faster and more convenient access to its most used features." The revamp includes new menus, icons and repositioning of menu commands based upon user preferences and feedback. Jan Holesovsky, a Director at TDF, and a member of the design team, said that the new version of the suite offers "a new user interface concept, where the user will be able to choose the best layout of the elements on the screen for his own needs". This would in turn allow users "to leverage desktop space in the best way," explained Holesovsky.
Another important consideration with an 'alternative' office suite is the file compatibility and interoperability. The LibreOffice developers claim that file compatibility with various formats has been improved and new filters integrated such as import/export for Apple Keynote 6, Microsoft Write and Gnumeric. The developers were also keen to highlight additional spreadsheet features and functions, and file access on remote servers such as Sharepoint, Google Drive and Alfresco - direct from the File menu. Videos highlighting the particular updated features of Writer, Calc and Impress have been compiled in a YouTube playlist.

You can read more about the changes and new features in LibreOffice 5.1 here. Downloads are, as usual, available from this link.
