Dell maintains its position as the world's top supplier of PC displays

With over 150 suppliers shipping 34 million displays over Q4 2014, Dell has maintained its position as the number one PC monitor supplier in the world, according to the latest report from the IDC.

With 34 million displays shipped in Q4 2014 seeing a 4.4% year-over-year decline, but a 1.3% increase on their forecast, the top five monitor manufacturers control a huge 60% of the market. Dell has secured itself 15.2% of the market, while Samsung has 12.7%. HP and Lenovo fall into third and fourth place with 11.8% and 10.9%, respectively. LG is in fifth place with 9.2%, leaving the rest of the market with the remaining 40%.

Dell shipped over 5.1 million displays in Q4 2014 while its closest competitor in Samsung shipped just under 4.3 million units, leaving HP to ship 4 million units, while Lenovo and LG shipped 3.6 million and 3.1 million units, respectively.

Samsung Announces Pricing, Availability For New Line Of Curved Monitors

Image: Samsung TomorrowJust weeks after Samsung introduced five new curved monitors to the international crowd, Samsung Electronics America revealed this week that four of those panels will be heading to North America in May 2015. These include the 31.5-inch SE590C Series, the 27-inch SE591C Series and the SE510C Series, which arrives in 23.6-inch and 27-inch flavors.
For starters, the SE590C series monitor is the only one in the batch with a 3000R curvature; all of the others sport a curvature of 4000R. All of these monitors have a resolution of 1920 x 1080, a response time of 4 ms, a refresh rate of 60 Hz and support for 16.7 million colors. Other similar traits include a 16:9 aspect ratio, 178-degree viewing angles, HDMI input and a headphone jack.
As for individual specifications, the two SE510C Series monitors have a typical brightness of 250 cd/m2, a static contrast ratio of 3,000:1 and a VGA port. Both come in black and sport a curved T-shaped stand. Samsung proprietary tech includes MagicBright, MagicUpscale, Game Mode, Flicker Free technology and more. This panel does not include speakers.
The SE590C Series curved monitor has a glossy black and metallic finish. The panel also includes a typical brightness of 350 cd/m2, a static contrast ratio of 5,000:1, one DisplayPort jack, two 5-watt speakers, two HDMI ports, a headphone jack and a curved T-shape stand. VGA, DVI, and dual-link DVI jacks are not included. Note that this is the only panel in the group that doesn't include Samsung's MagicUpscale technology.
Finally, we have the SE591C Series monitor. This panel has a typical brightness of 350 cd/m2, a static contrast ratio of 3,000:1, one VGA port, one DisplayPort jack, one audio port and a headphones jack. Also included are two 5-watt speakers, a curved T-shaped stand and Samsung's proprietary Game Mode, Flicker Free tech and so on. This panel ships in a glossy white finish.
"We've seen a lot of excitement around curved displays, first with our TV line and again with the SE790C curved monitor we introduced at CES 2015. We're excited to be expanding our curved monitor line to give consumers more options," said Dave Das, Senior Vice President, Samsung Electronics America.
Samsung’s new monitors will be made available sometime next month. The SE510C Series will cost $299.99 and $379.99 for the 23.6-inch and 27-inch monitors respectively. The SE591C Series monitor will cost $399.99, and the SE590C Series monitor will cost a heftier $599.99.
Updated April 3, 2015 at 2:20pm EST with pricing for the two SE510C monitors.

Asus Announces First 144Hz IPS WQHDAsus Announces First 144Hz IPS WQHD AMD FreeSync MonitorAMD FreeSync Monitor

Asus has announced its very first FreeSync monitor and the only one to feature an IPS panel with a resolution of 2560×1440 “WQHD” at 144Hz. The monitor in question is the MG279Q, a 27″ display targeted towards gamers. It features an AH-VA type IPS based panel which is why its capable of such a high refresh rate that would otherwise be impossible with other subtypes of In-Plane-Switching display panels.
We had talked about this monitor before, when Asus showcased it back in January during CES 2015. Back then the monitor hadn’t been officially declared to support FreeSync and Asus was still optimizing response times and pushing for a higher refresh rate. Today we’re finally able to confirm that just as had been suspected back in January this monitor does indeed support AMD’s Adaptive-Sync based FreeSync technology. Asus has also delightedly managed to meet its target to push the panel refresh rate from the previous 120Hz to 144Hz.

Variable refresh rate technology represents an exciting new chapter for gaming monitors. It used to be that all what had actually defined a gaming monitor was its refresh rate, response time and auxiliary features. This is changing very quickly as variable refresh rate technologies such as Nvidia’s G-Sync and AMD’s FreeSync are becoming a cornerstone in defining what a gaming monitor should and shouldn’t be.
We’ve explored the advantages that a dynamic refresh rate brings to the gaming experience to a great length in our in-depth analysis of G-Sync and FreeSync. Which I’d highly recommend that you check out if you haven’t already.
So far we know of 12 different FreeSync capable monitors that have been announced, including Asus’s new entry to the market with the MG279Q. AMD had previously stated that conservatively, they’re estimating that a total of 20 different FreeSync monitors will be coming to market before the end of this year. And we’ll keep you updated as the remaining eight are released.

O Asus vai rondar os 600€. Um bocado puxado para o meu gosto, mais vale esperar mais uns tempos. Até porque 27" já começa a ser gorducho demais aqui para o estaminé. A ver se aparecem os de 24" em breve.

4K Ultra HD TVs could reach 20% market share in 2015

Adoption of ultra-high-definition televisions is gradually increasing as prices are getting lower in well-developed countries and China. As a result, market share of UHD TV-sets could hit around 20 per cent globally already this year, according to optimistic predictions of makers of TV components. The production cost of a 4K UHD television is only around 15 per cent higher compared to the cost of a full-HD TV-set, reports DigiTimes citing sources among makers of TV components. By contrast, the former devices are around 50 per cent more expensive than the latter, which means that manufacturers can significantly reduce prices of TVs with 3840*2160 resolution while retaining profitability. Although many brands want to keep 4K UHD TVs as premium models, they will have to lower pricing due to increasing competition.
Global TV shipments are projected to reach between 200 and 210 million this year, the media report claims. If shipments of UHD TVs hit 40 million units this year, then they will reach around 20 per cent market share worldwide. This will only happen if such TVs get significantly more affordable than they are today and content in ultra-high-def resolution becomes available more widely.

While it is possible that TV makers start to promote UHD televisions in order to boost sales, ultra HD content will hardly become pervasive. The 4K Blu-ray format is still not officially finalized and without optical discs with UHD movies, even early adopters will wait with purchase of a new TV.
China and North America are expected to be the main growing markets for 4K TVs in 2015, whereas demand in Japan and Europe is projected to remain flat.
20% do mercado já é bem bom para os 4k, especialmente tendo em conta que quase não há conteúdo de video e que nenhuma gráfica sozinha aguenta com esta resolução com os jogos de hoje.

HP unveils 31.5-inch 4K UHD display with 10-bit colour spectrum

Hewlett-Packard has unveiled its new professional monitor that combines all the latest display technologies available today. The HP Z32x boasts with ultra-high-definition resolution, accurate colours and rich connectivity options. Pricing of the product was not announced, but do not expect it to be affordable.
The HP DreamColor Z32x (M2D46A4) features an advanced 31.5” IPS panel with 3840*2160 resolution as well as a wide 10-bit color spectrum sRGB/BT.709/AdobeRGB (100/100/99.5 per cent color coverage). The display is factory calibrated and delivers accurate colour reproduction out-of-box. Fast and easy hardware recalibration is achieved with either the HP DreamColor solution or the Klein Instruments K10-A.

The DreamColor Z32x monitor features 178° horizontal and 178° vertical viewing angles, 300cd/m² brightness as well as 8ms gray to gray response time. Since the display is not designed for gamers, its 60Hz refresh rate can hardly be considered a drawback.
The professional monitor features one HDMI 2.0, one HDMI 1.4/MHL, one DisplayPort 1.2 and one mini-DisplayPort connectors with HDCP support. The display also sports four-port USB 3.0 hub with fast charging support. The HP Z32x also has 4-way, customizable tilt, height adjustment, swivel, and pivot settings to adjust from landscape to portrait.

The largest HP DreamColor monitor is planned to be available this summer. HP did not reveal its pricing but do not expect it to be less than $1500.

Samsung to out five new Curved monitors

Like or hate the curve, Samsung is moving along with it. Ranging in size from 23.5 to 31.5", Samsung are set to release five new curved monitors to their lineup. These include the new SE790C, SE590C and SE591C series. The SE790C and the SE590C have a 3000R radius curvature, and the SE591C and the two SE510C panels sport a 4000R radius curvature.
The SE510C panels are considered the entry level offerings of the group, while the SE790C is the flagship panel.

    • The SE790C is 29" in size and ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio. It sports a 2560 x 1080 resolution, 4ms G2G response time, 3000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 16.7m colour depth and 178/178 viewing angles. Black and silver versions are offered. A height adjustable stand and VESA mounting options are offered. There is also PbP and PiP functionality and 2x 7W speakers built in.
    • The SE590C is the largest model offered, with a 31.5" screen size and 16:9 aspect ratio. There is a lower 1920 x 1080 resolution, 4ms G2G response time, 5000:1 contrast ratio, 350 cd/m2 brightness, 16.7m colour depth and 178/178 viewing angles. Like the SE790C, black and silver models are offered. This model has 2x 5W stereo speakers also.
    • The SE591C is again 16:9 aspect ratio and 27" in size. There is a 1920 x 1080 resolution, 4ms G2G response time, 3000:1 contrast ratio, 350 cd/m2 brightness, 16.7m colour depth and 178/178 viewing angles. This model comes in a glossy white design.

Finally the SE510C comes in 23.5 and 27" sizes, offering 16:9 aspect ratios again. They have a 1920 x 1080 resolution, 4ms G2G response time, 3000:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m2 brightness, 16.7m colour depth and 178/178 viewing angles. Both models are black in colour.
Samsung Electronics’ new curved monitors feature industry-leading Vertical Alignment (VA) panel technology, which provides an optimal level of curvature, superior contrast ratio and significantly reduced backlight bleed, resulting in enhanced picture quality. These high-performing panels complement the natural curve of the human eye to deliver a more immersive, seamless and comfortable viewing experience, even in dark settings such as movie and gaming environments. The SE590C joins the SE790C in providing viewers with a best-in-class 3000R (curvature radius of 3,000 mm) curvature design. Along with the 4000R radius curvature of the SE591C and SE510C, the innovative design of Samsung Electronics’ curved monitors creates a distortion-free viewing with reduced reflection, less eye strain and unparalleled comfort.

“This year is shaping up to be the year of the curved monitor, as more consumers and businesses turn to curved displays to achieve a more comfortable viewing experience,” said Seog-Gi Kim, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics. “As the company behind the launch of the industry’s first LED curved monitor, our introduction of this full curved lineup reflects our commitment to refine curvature design and picture quality, while also achieving energy efficiency and next-level innovation to provide a more natural, pleasurable viewing experiencethat our customers expect.”
Samsung Electronics’ lineup of new curved monitors is equipped with advanced features that further enhance viewing comfort. An eye-saver mode, which offers low blue light technology, helps to reduce the harmful effects of blue light on viewers’ eyes and associated eye strain, particularly during extended periods of screen use. Similarly, the monitors’ flicker-free function protects viewers’ eyes from the constant strain of flickering screens that can be experienced with standard monitors. As a result of the flicker-free technology, viewers can utilize their screens a lot longer with less eye fatigue.

For enhanced on-screen immersion, picture quality and entertainment, the monitors’ impressive static contrast ratios (ranging from 5000:1 for the SE590C to 3000:1 for most standard models) and high brightness (up to 350 cd/m2 with the SE590C and SE591C) produce life-like pictures with deeper blacks, pristine whites and brighter colors. The monitors also come with a game mode that intelligently detects changes in scenes by correcting blurry images, enhancing colors and altering contrast for improved visibility of in-game action. Together, these features ensure that viewers can enjoy multi-media content with more vibrant picture quality, clarity and intensity it deserves.

A sustainable design also reinforces the new curved monitor line-up’s ability to offer a richer and more energy-efficient experience. The monitor’s new eco-saving plus function offers the benefits of eco-saving technology by reducing screen brightness for increased energy efficiency. In addition to two standard manual settings, there is an auto-setting that reduces energy consumption by approximately 10 percent (based on the luminescence of the screen’s black sections).
Samsung Electronics’ 2015 lineup of curved monitors includes:

    SE790C Series
As the flagship of Samsung Electronics’ curved monitor portfolio, the 29-inch SE790C features an industry-leading 3000R radius curvature and Wide Full High Definition (WFHD) resolution. The SE790C also offers a best-in-class static contrast ratio of 3,000:1 and 21:9 wide display aspect ratio for an improved viewing and multi-tasking experience, particularly in darker settings. For enhanced comfort and productivity, the monitor’s refined, ergonomic design includes a height-adjustable stand (HAS) and VESA mount support, in addition to Picture-by-Picture (PbP) and Picture-in-Picture (PiP) 2.0 functionality. The SE790C’s built-in 7-watt dual stereo speakers deliver high-quality sound and a richer multi-media experience for added convenience.

Acer crams 4K panel into Professional-series 23.8-inch monitor

Swivel and pivot for €399, HYKbmjdpr FTW
Acer has introduced a new 4K/UHD monitor for designers on a budget.

The Acer Professional CB240HYKbmjdpr (seriously Acer, HYKbmjdpr?!) sports a 23.8-inch IPS panel capable of churning out 3840x2160 in 60Hz. The response time is 6mn, while viewing angles are 178 degrees. The monitor features DVI, HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 inputs. Since it’s part of the Professional series, the HYKbmjdpr comes with a height-adjustable stand, with pivot and swivel functionality.
While it sounds like it was named by a couple of Polish geeks after a few dozen vodkas, this is a no-nonsense, no-frills monitor priced at €399, which is quite competitive given the spec. The bad news is that it won't ship anytime soon. Retail availability for this particular SKU is expected in late May or early June.

Não tinha visto aquele Acer... 4K IPS 24" por 400€? dass, nada mau! Com scaling de jeito a qualidade de imagem, mesmo a curta distância, deve ficar ao estilo de um smartphone de topo. Impecável.

Asus PA328Q ProArt 4K Monitor Review

Ultra HD 4K monitors have been dropping in price this year, although quality IPS models still command a premium. Today we look at the ASUS ProArt PA328Q, priced around £1,000. While still expensive, it is a far cry from the launch price of the IGZO 4K ASUS PQ321QE, which was a wallet sapping £3,000.

The Asus PA328Q measures 32 inches and has four times the density of a standard 1080p panel. The panel is 10 bit IPS and Asus claim it delivers 100% of the sRGB colour gamut. The panel ships calibrated from the factory and has a 12 bit lookup table to help render accurate images.
    Asus PA328Q ProArt Overview:

    • Professional-grade 32-inch 4K/UHD display with four times the pixel density of Full HD displays.
    • Factory pre-calibrated, industry-leading color accuracy with 100% sRGB and Rec. 709 color space support.
    • Extensive connectivity with HDMI 2.0/1.4, DisplayPort 1.2, and MHL 3.0 for smooth 4K/UHD content playback.
    • ASUS Eye Care Technology with TÜV Rheinland-certified Flicker-free technology which eliminates onscreen flicker.
    • Adjust for maximum comfort with ergonomic tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjustments plus wall-mount capability.
