    Nokia Lumia 520

Microsoft’s Wildly Popular Lumia 520 Tapped For Windows 10, But ’Features May Vary'

It's been a roller coaster of ups and downs in trying to figure out which Windows Phone devices will receive an update to Windows 10 when it comes out, and the situation seems to change by the week. As it stands right now, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore says the Redmond outfit is working on a Windows 10 update for low-end devices with only 512MB of RAM, though cautions that "features may vary."

That includes the popular Lumia 520, an affordable handset with a respectable feature-set for the money. It's only $29 at the Microsoft Store or $40 from Amazon, both of which represent no-contract pricing. The phone itself sports a 4-inch display with an 800x480 resolution, Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage upgradeable via microSD, user-replaceable 1,430 mAh battery, 5-megapixel camera, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a few other standard features.

It's not yet known which features will be left out of the mix for lower-end Windows Phone devices, as Belfiore didn't elaborate. However, one would hope Microsoft does a better job this time than it did when rolling out Windows Phone 8 upgrades -- at the time, some older devices were only upgraded to Windows Phone 7.8, which was missing many of the features in Windows Phone 8.

This is also a situation that keeps changing. In November of last year, Microsoft posted to Twitter that there would be Windows 10 upgrades for all Windows Phones devices. Then in January of this year, Microsoft clarified things in a blog post -- "Like any upgrade to a new platform, not every phone will upgrade or support all possible Windows 10 features, and certain features and experiences will require more advanced future handsets."

Microsoft Provides Windows 10 Technical Preview Fix For Lumia 520, 521 Smartphones (Updated)

Last week, reports began to surface that the latest build of Windows 10 for phones was bricking Nokia Lumia 520, 525 and 526 devices. The failure reared its head when users were trying to roll their phone back to Windows Phone 8.1 by using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. Microsoft halted the Windows 10 rollout for those specific models and began a thorough investigation of the issue.
On Monday, Microsoft provided an update focused on the Nokia Lumia 520 and 521 devices. The company said that users experiencing problems either see a red Nokia logo or the phone has a black screen and can no longer reboot. For those who have a bricked device, the company said it's still investigating the problem.
The company provided a few tips for customers facing the red logo. First, you can grab the latest Windows Phone Recovery Tool (1.2.4) by closing the tool and re-opening it. Also make sure the phone has a good power source and then re-flash the phone once the new tool is installed. If you see an error stating that the device was not detected, you're encouraged to proceed anyway.
Customers with a black or blank screen are encouraged to follow these steps as well. However, these affected devices are "in a different state" and will take longer to recover, if they're even recoverable at all.
So what is happening on Lumia 520 and 521 devices? The good news is that only a small portion of these Lumia phones are having issues.
"It was discovered that some devices are having trouble accepting the recovery image data being flashed," Microsoft's update said. "The blocks of data were too large for some devices to handle, and the memory on the device was having trouble with the speed at which the data was being written. In short, devices were getting too much data, too quickly. This would cause the failure as the new software is corrupted."
To fix the issue, Microsoft has reduced both the size of the data blocks and the data writing speed so that the phones deal with smaller chunks of data at a slower rate. This "fix" will be added to a new version of the Windows Phone Recovery Tool, which is now a mandatory install. To get this update, close and re-launch the Recovery Tool; the client will automatically offer the latest build.
Microsoft's report added that the company plans to contact users with the Lumia problems in order to perform "additional real-world testing." If these phones show great results, the company will turn the Windows 10 update back on for all Lumia 520 and 521 phones. The update didn't say anything about the Nokia Lumia 525 and 526 devices, which are also seeing recovery errors.
If you want to get into the Windows Insiders Program and test Windows 10 for phones, you can peek at the list of supported phones here. Potential testers can download the Windows Insider app here. Testers must also be a member of the Windows Insider Program in order to update to the technical preview build.
Update, 4/20/15, 12:40pm PT: Microsoft Insider's Gabriel Aul confirmed via Twitter that Microsoft has paused the distribution of Windows 10 Technical Preview for the Lumia 52x series. He said the problem has been resolved and the company will resume offering Windows 10 Technical Preview to the Lumia 52x line late April 21 (tomorrow).

Three-year-old Lumia 520 is still the most popular Windows Phone

Over the past couple of years, things haven't been going particularly well for Microsoft's phone platform. Even in 2016, as pointed out by Windows Central, the three-year-old Nokia Lumia 520 remains the most widely used Windows Phone, well ahead of any flagship device.
According to statistics from AdDuplex, the Lumia 520 represents 12.9 percent of all Windows Phone devices currently in use, ahead of other entry-level phones like the Lumia 535 (11.7%) and Lumia 630 (8.6%). Only three phones released in 2015 were in the top ten most used devices - the Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL and Lumia 435 - all of which are entry-level devices.
To make matters worse, the only high-end smartphone that registered a significant percentage of Windows Phone market share was the Nokia Lumia 920: a device released in 2012, apparently still used by three percent of Windows Phone users. OEMs have also failed to make a dent on the Microsoft/Nokia Windows Phone monopoly, collectively accounting for just 3% of all devices.

The report from AdDuplex continues to highlight many of Windows Phone's failures. The fact that the Lumia 520 is still the most popular device shows how Microsoft hasn't managed to repeat the successes of its older, highly-popular budget smartphones. In many ways the platform has been overtaken by Android in the entry-level market, and the lack of compelling new budget devices hasn't helped.
Microsoft has also failed to release a successful high-end handset since it purchased Nokia's smartphone division in 2013. In the past two years we have seen new products like the Lumia 930 and Lumia 950, but neither device took the market by storm.
And finally, while Windows Phone is available to other manufacturers, the devices they've released and the platform itself hasn't been attractive to consumers at all. There is hope that Windows 10 Mobile might bring more OEMs into the ecosystem, but even Microsoft is struggling to produce compelling devices that use their own OS.
