StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void Closed Beta Begins March 31st

The third installment of Blizzards highly popular RTS game, StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, will emerge as a closed beta test coming up on March 31st. With two weeks to go until they start, Blizzard posted to their official blog some of the things that you can expect to see in that beta. As a beta, as usual, don’t expect it to be complete in any way.

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void closed beta starts on March 31st 2015. Look for new units and a new cooperative mode.

But more than that, definitely be on the lookout for bugs and other game destroying things. Blizzard is committed to bringing a great experience to market with little need for a day 1 patch. They’ve been nice enough to tell prospective brave beta testers exactly what to expect on their blog post. Mainly to be aware that it’s a beta and will most certainly be rough around the edges.
“Overall, we’re incredibly excited to be taking Legacy of the Void into beta. We’ve been working hard to make this game the best it can be. Thank you for all the feedback you have offered on StarCraft II these past few years, and we look forward to hearing even more of what you have to say in the beta.”
But what’s new? Starting resources will change surrounding each base, half with 1500 and the other half with 750. This change is to encourage players to expand far more aggressively than normal by almost literally forcing you in order to support large armies.
First of all, and likely most important, Blizzard also added some new units to each race in StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, with more to come as the beta progresses. The Zerg will be blessed with a new ranged unit called the Ravager. It uses a corrosive bile to deal large area damage from afar.

The Terran’s get the Cyclone, a factory unit that has the ability to lock onto targets and deal massive amounts of damage even while on the move.
The Protoss get two new units right off of the bat, the Adept and the Disruptor. The Adept is a core gateway unit that does long ranged damage and can even teleport using a Psionic Transfer ability. The other unit is the Disruptor, a light-mech unit that has a great ability called Purification Nova which deals splash damage while it becomes invulnerable.
There are also some other minor changes that are being made to the gameplay as well, such as the starting worker count, the scan range and even the game speed. Game speed has been modified to match that of real life, so 5 seconds is indeed 5 seconds for an ability cool-down.
If you’re an avid StarCraft II player, then you may be receiving an invite soon. But be mindful that it’s a beta and isn’t going to be super awesome from the get go, they need your help. Remember they need your help to make it awesome.
“To be clear, our goal for this expansion is to work together with all of you to make Legacy of the Void as awesome as possible.”

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void Gets Prologue in July

While StarCraft II is known for its multiplayer component, some of us are mostly interested in the campaign... and Arcade mods, but there's no news on that front. Legacy of the Void is the end of the StarCraft II trilogy, which is said to finally deal with the hybrids that were introduced in the secret missions of Brood War and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. They played a larger role in Heart of the Swarm's campaign although that did not even have unlockable missions, so they wouldn't exist otherwise.

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void does not yet have a release date, but there will be a mini-campaign released for free before it launches. StarCraft II: Whispers of Oblivion (or is that StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void: Whispers of Oblivion?) are three single-player missions that will be released in July. Those who pre-purchase Legacy of the Void will get the missions first, which might mean that everyone else needs to wait until after July to play them... or not. That said, if you are patient, you do not even need to own StarCraft II at all. Free to all, but timed-exclusive for those who pre-order.

You Can Now Pre-Order Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void

Ok, so pre-ordering might be a little risky when it comes to new games, but I think that the third expansion for Starcraft II is a pretty safe bet. Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void is currently available for pre-order, and it comes in two different versions priced at $39.99 and $59.99. The more expensive variant is the digital deluxe edition that includes the standard edition as well as a World of Warcraft Archon pet, a Protoss-themed Hearthstone card back, unique portraits and unit skins, a Void Seeker mount and a Probe pet as well as a Protoss transmog in Diablo III.
Those who will choose to pre-order the expansion will also be able to enjoy early access to a prologue campaign that bridges the storyline gap between Heart of the Swarm and the beginning of Legacy of the Void. Moreover, pre-ordering guarantees access to the game’s closed beta phase. During the “Whispers of Oblivion” prologue, the player takes on the role of Zeratul, who seeks to decipher a series of old prophecies.
The prologue has no official release date right now, but we do know that it will be offered for free.
Thank you Dsogaming for providing us with this information.

Blizzard will consider Warcraft 4 after StarCraft 2

Fans have been asking Blizzard for a ‘Warcraft 4′ for years now, however the developer’s RTS efforts have been wrapped up in StarCraft 2 for some time now. However, according to StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void Producer, Tim Morten, Blizzard will continue returning to the Warcraft RTS series once StarCraft 2 is finished.
Blizzard promised three expansions for StarCraft 2, one for each of the three main races. We have already had Heart of the Swarm, which focussed on the Zerg race and we are due to get the second expansion, Legacy of the Void, later this year. Since the second expansion is not out yet, it could be quite some time before we even hear about the final expansion.

Speaking with IGN, Morten said: “It’s very rewarding for us to hear that there’s demand out there for more RTS content in the Warcraft universe so once we’re done with Void I think we’ll get together as a team and talk about what would inspire us to work on next. There’s no question, though, that we’ll consider Warcraft, StarCraft, or even new ideas. Anything is possible”.
So once StarCraft 2 is all wrapped up, we may hear something about a return to Warcraft.

Blizzard brings automated tournaments to StarCraft II

Blizzard adds automated tournaments to StarCraft II - great for the scene, but possibly tragic for small-time organizers (NASDAQ:ATVI)

In a bid to win over eSports enthusiasts and those looking to transfer into this scene, Blizzard has recently announced the addition of automated tournaments within its gaming client.

Complete with an easy-to-access tournaments button in the main menu, the two tournament formats on offer in this beta testing period will be 3-round tournaments in single elimination and 6-round tournaments in a group stage to single elimination bracket.

This is a great way in order for Blizzard to push more players towards the eSports scene, alongside giving competitive players a viable way to hone their skills on a regular basis. However, small tournament organizers who are looking to learn some tips and tricks in order to move onto bigger and better things may find this addition an issue as it basically kills their target audience.

StarCraft II launches Archon Mode with Red Bull tournament support

Described as "two players, one army - two armies, one game" in a recently issued press release, Red Bull has announced that StarCraft II's new Archon Mode will be featured in its next Red Bull battle Grounds playoffs.

Set to be featured in Blizzard's standalone expansion, Legacy of the Void, Archon Mode sees two players take over a single army, controlling it in unison against a same-structured opposing team.

Said to be even more intense and exciting than the common 1v1 mode as seen over the many years of StarCraft II and Brood War tournaments, this mode will see air time on September 19 in Washingson D.C, at the next live Red Bull event.

Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void Review

    • Developer/Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment
    • Platform: PC (Battle.net, $/€ 39.99 for the Standard Edition)
    • Code provided by publisher.

Five years ago, Blizzard released Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty to huge critical and public acclaim. With that release they began what they revealed was a trilogy of games that would cap off the story that began with the release of StarCraft back in 1998. The finale of that trilogy is here and, for better or worse, Legacy of the Void delivers on that promise and this story in the StarCraft universe has finally ended.
It’s somewhat difficult to review a release like Legacy of the Void because there’s no real place to start. As much as it is a standalone title, and also priced as a new release, it’s still just a secondary expansion to the original release. The core game is still the same and that is particularly true for somebody like myself, someone who’s here to see the conclusion of the story and not for the changes in multiplayer, which I will come to later.

As a release for the story and those not interested in the multiplayer, you’ve already played it. As with its predecessor, Heart of the Swarm, this expansion includes a whole new campaign, this time focused on the Protoss and their leader, Artanis. The release introduces a few new units to use both online and offline; Legacy of the Void also includes the prerequisite cheesy story but with some incredibly dry and boring dialogue that only seems to be getting worse as the series has come to its conclusion.
Blizzard have never been the most competent at telling a story, but StarCraft fell from a galaxy spanning conflict between three races to this, a mishmash of alliances fighting against a faceless big bad that may as well have been taken straight out of an episode of Scooby Doo. All the subtleties have been thrown straight out of the window and sadly, the conclusion just furthers my thoughts that as a story the StarCraft II Trilogy is quite poor.
This thought is only enhanced when you see how slapdash some of the events are linked together. An event will occur and then the next cutscene will open with the line “much later”. The dialogue here ends up feeling just as fluid, with lines such as “you have aided me on my quest. I am honor-bound to aid you on yours”. This is the sort of basic writing you expect from a poorly translated, badly made low budget non-English language game. Not a release the size of StarCraft.

Despite the story landing with a resounding thud, the campaign is otherwise excellent. With a number of well designed missions, ranging from your traditional base-building RTS missions to more experimental missions that are spread throughout and inventive enough to keep it fresh. There are even missions featuring MOBA style gameplay, giving you a hero and a collection of troops with no means of building more, or giving you a movable base with limited resources. The variety and twists all amounts to a campaign offering that rarely gets stale even after ten or twenty missions.
    Advertisements

The difficulty also enhances the campaign. Legacy of the Void is challenging enough on normal difficulty, with the hard setting offering that extra notch if you feel like taking it. I attempted one level on brutal setting; needless to say I won’t be attempting any others in the near future, because even with the hero units and the abilities offered by the Spear of Adun (your ship for the duration of the campaign) the difficulty is too much for a mere mortal such as I.

Where Legacy of the Void makes real changes is, surprisingly to me, the multiplayer. I won’t ever deny the fact that the online mode of most games is anathema to me. Bar a handful of games, eSports just doesn’t interest me in the slightest and the communities around the top games make breaking into them seem harder than breaking into the Louvre to take a cheeky photo with the Mona Lisa. I’m distinctly average at StarCraft and as such, some of the changes made to the online mode are appealing yet flawed.

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void PC Review

It's hard to believe, but StarCraft II was announced over eight years ago. After teasing fans of the series for numerous years, Blizzard finally announced the inevitable sequel and then did something no one expected. They split it into three games. Fast forward to 2015 and we have the final culmination of the StarCraft II series with Legacy of the Void, finally bringing the Protoss campaign to fans and wrapping up this epic saga. However, it's fair to say that gaming and the RTS genre has significantly changed in the last eight years, and the genre does not dominate like it once did, MOBAs have taken over. So, is this a game that a regular Joe can get into or is this one for only the true fans?

As expected, Legacy of the Void picks up after the events of Heart of the Swam. The Protoss (who the main campaign focuses on this time around) are close to discovering and completing the Xel'Naga. The Protoss begin their invasion of Aiur; a Protoss world abandoned after the invasion of the planet by the ever rampant Zerg. It is up to you to complete the Protoss legacy, rid the planet of Zerg, and fulfil the Protoss legacy once and for all (and wrap up the StarCraft II story along the way).

Vou chegar ao fim só porque sim, mas confesso que já estou um pouco farto do jogo. Coisa que não aconteceu com os outros.

Depois deste vou jogar o Grey Goo. Saíu uma expansão para o mesmo.
