    Google Play Store

The Refurbished Desktop Layout Of Play Store – Google Tests Sidebar For Related Apps

Google Play Store mobile has been a great repository for the provision of applications to us and Play Store for web just makes things more easier. There has been news of Google shoveling the dust of its traditional style layout for the web, but the operation to execution has taken a little too long to implement. According to several sources, Google has been running tests for its new layout which might be made public soon. For more, jump to the details.
Currently, when we open the app, the entire similar app category is displayed at the very end of the web page and Google might be aware of this problem. The idea is to create a new layout which will display the applications on the sidebar for easy sight and enhanced user friendliness. This would not be a major change and will not have any chain effects, but no doubt it would have a positive impact on the users.

Google’s New Play Store Layout – Introduces Sidebar Refernces

A reader of this blog named Patryk Szczyglowski, observed an experimental interface for Google Play web. The updated web version of the Google Play Store has introduced a sidebar which will show of the latest trending applications which is completely anew. The UI also offers a list of similar apps and other apps made by the same developer. If we compare the UI of the older and the modernized layout, these additions were placed at the bottom of the page, below the description and other information like the changelog.
Emphasizing the experiment Patryk also said, “Please note, it doesn’t fit my laptop screen 1366×768, but Google might enable this experiment for me, because I have been using an external Full HD screen for a week recently.”
Some don’t see a point in it but seems like the Google Play Web would be more user friendly with all the suggestions at the sidebar. This would allow users to potentially involve in discovering new applications with ease. Google will undoubtedly benefit from this. What do you guys think? Is the new layout worth implying? Do share your thoughts in the comments.

Google’s Inbox finally working on Firefox, Safari, iPads and Android Tablets

Google inbox service now works on Safari and Firefox on desktops. Other than that, it is also be made available on Android tablets and iPad’s. The updated version of Google inbox service can now be downloaded directly from Apple’s App Store or Google Play Store.

Google Inbox still seems to favor its own browser more than others

Before this announcement by Google, its email service only worked on Chrome. An inbox app specifically designed for Chrome has also been introduced by Google which seemed to be no more than shortcut in reality. And on the other hand, when considering the mobile devices, it primarily worked on Android smartphones and iPhone’s only. Google hopes to shift from Gmail to inbox eventually but it stated that it wont take any decision without the consent and feedback of its users i.e. whether they want to shift on to the inbox or they want to stay with the same Gmail services as now.
“It’s always hard to know when it’s time to share a new product, because there’s always just a _few_ more things you want to do. Today we’re happy to check off some of these to-dos for Inbox, making it easier to use on more devices and browsers.
If you’re a big fan of tablets, you’ll be excited to learn that Inbox has come to iPad and Android tablets. Download the app from the App Store and Google Play”.

However, even after this much advancement in the availability of Google’s inbox on so many devices and browsers, other platforms and browsers are still not supported. Interestingly, internet explorer is also not a part of this deal. Although Google has started providing services to other browsers, but still it seem to provide certain new offerings and privileges to its own chrome first, before it does that to any other browser in particular. Engineers at Google seem to provide a valid argument for not allowing every browser with their services, that they “want to make sure that everything works perfectly before enabling it for all of our users.”
More features are going to come in the inbox for example integration with other email systems, Undo Send feature, customizing Snooze times, integration of Google Drive and the ability to download all attachments, etc.

Control Flashlight, Wi Fi And Bluetooth Through Your Voice With Voice Commands On Lollipop

Up to this day, Android users needed to download an external torch application from Google Play Store or use the one provided by the manufacturer. Now, operations have advanced and new techniques have been invented to pour the same utility in the most stress free way. So smartphones with a Lollipop handling system, can access or operate Flashlight via Google Command options. This technique seems pretty easy on the hands and mind.
Operate Your Flashlight, Wifi And Bluetooth With Google Now Command

Google Command is a pretty neat feature which made its debut with the Lollipop OS. If you want to turn your flashlight on, just say, ”Turn on flashlight” and similarly, if you want it off then just say, ”Turn off Flashlight. Yes! its this simple if you have a Lollipop operating system. Not just the Flashlight, Google Command also supports Wi-Fi feature with the same command technique. Just say, ”Turn on (or off) Wi-Fi” and your command will be fulfilled. The same is the case with Bluetooth options. Google Command has really made smartphones to work while in the holster mode.

If you wonder about the feedback, then there will be no virtual voice which will tell you that your desired operation is complete. An even better way is suggested by Google which pops a Google Now Card about your desired action. The Google Now Card also has a toggle switch inside, by which you can spontaneously change your requested operation. Yet, the Airplane Mode, Volume and Brightness modes are not supported but we hope they come soon. The user is sent a settings button by which he can change the settings of the desired change of the remaining options that don’t work yet. This is really helpful as well as time saving.
There are applications out there which seek your exact location without your permission, like the ‘Brightest Flashlight Free’. These kinds of applications leak out your personal data along with a unique device identifier to third party sources as well as as networks, which is against privacy policies. This is another reason why all KitKat owners seek Lollipop for. Once you have your hands on Lollipop and its Google Command features, applications like ‘Brightest Flashlight Free’are no longer needed. Hence if you’re a Lollipop owner, you can enjoy these cool command features and as for others, either update or wait for it. This is it for now, let us know if you found this feature useful.

Presto has launched on Android and iOS

How much time to you spend being entertained by your phone? Presto has joined Stan and Quickflix, fighting for your eyes by providing another video streaming subscription option in Australia.

With Netflix said to launch in 'The Land Down Under' next month, Citrix Mobile Analytics claims that "the mobile user experience is, increasingly, a video experience," which would explain the sudden surge in openings.

Compatible with iPhone 5S, 5S and higher Apple models, Android users will see multiple devices supported across Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony and ZTE. Access can be granted through the Presto app on either the Apple App Store, Google Play or the Samsung App Store.

As we've written previously, Presto is a project by Foxtel and Seven West Media in order to take control of this emerging scene.

Google Escapes Antitrust Litigation Over Android's 'Restrictive' Default App Requirements

Not even a week after Yandex filed a complaint against Google for its anticompetitive practices, a San Jose judge dismissed a lawsuit that focused on similar accusations.

In this lawsuit, Google was ultimately accused of being anticompetitive. This accusation stems from the fact that the company bundles many of its own apps on most (or all) Android devices, and like the Yandex complaint, Google's search engine is default (and I mentioned last week, it's not clear to me if the functionality of that bar can be altered without having to use a custom launcher).
This could be considered a major win for Google, as Microsoft wasn't so lucky in the EU years ago, when it was ultimately forced to introduce a "browser wheel" to its Windows builds in that region. According to this San Jose judge, it's perfectly suitable for a company to bundle its own apps.
What made this case a bit different, though, is that the accusers claimed device prices were made higher as a result of there being no app competition. There was no proof of this, however, and it seems a bit odd to believe that would even be the case. If Google is able to load up all Android devices with its own apps, it'd stand to reason that the devices would be less expensive - Google wants everyone and their dog to use an Android device, after all.
Nonetheless, the plaintiffs have three weeks to amend their claim, so it might not be the last we hear of this case. It certainly won't be the last we hear of such a case being filed - it's becoming routine at this point.

iFlix Allows You to Instantly Watch and Listen to Torrents on Android

A new app for Android makes viewing torrents easier than ever before. iFlix takes over after clicking on a magnet link, playing video and music in a clean interface. There’s no need to wait for a torrent to complete and skipping can be achieved in just a few moments.
While this in itself isn’t anything new, there aren’t any complicated settings to make in order to get it to work. It also has both interesting roots and future plans. The base for the idea came from another app by the same developer, one that allows parents to keep an eye on their kids while attending kindergarten.
Having bandwidth issues forced the developers to take a look at distributed systems similar to torrents which then lead to this new app. But it doesn’t stop here:
“iFlix is a product that’s’s based on a platform that I am trying to create. This platform is intended to be a P2P compute grid based on the Bitcoin protocol where instead of computing hashes to mine coins you compute different tasks, e.g ‘fetch the first two chunks from the magnet:x’ which iFlix does at this moment,” the developer Vali explains. “At this moment the engine behind the platform is based on the Google SPDY protocol and the purpose of iFlix is to measure the scalability of the engine.”
Thanks to TorrentFreak for providing us with this information

YouTube Kids Vaults Onto Google Play And iOS App Stores

News broke last week that YouTube was going to follow in the footsteps of Netflix and offer a family-friendly version of its streaming service for kids, and the report turned out to be true. The YouTube Kids app is now available to download from Google Play and Apple's App Store, the two most popular mobile platforms in the world.

"Today, we’re introducing the YouTube Kids app, the first Google product built from the ground up with little ones in mind. The app makes it safer and easier for children to find videos on topics they want to explore, and is available for free on and the in the U.S.," YouTube stated in a blog post.

The YouTube Kids app filters out content that isn't appropriate for kids, letting mom and pop rest easy knowing that little Suzie won't be traumatized by Old Gregg when she picks up the iPad. What's left is broken down into browsable channels and playlists in four categories: Shows, Music, Learning, and Explore.

Alternately, little Suzie or her brother Billy can search for videos that interest them. Maybe Billy needs some help with math and looks up tutorials on the subject, while Suzie wants to see what Thomas the Tank Engine is up to. Both will be able to find what they're looking for.

YouTube baked in some basic parental controls that allow mom and pop to set a timer, adjust the sound settings, limited searches to pre-selected videos (or turn it off altogether), and to provide feedback on how to improve the experience.

No word on whether YouTube Kids will find its way to Windows Phone / Windows 10. For now, you can find it here for Android and here for iOS.

Google Play Music Now Lets You Store 50,000 Songs in the Cloud for Free

If you prefer to access your own music collection rather than use a streaming service, Google has a plan for you: It is now allowing users to store up to 50,000 of their own song files in Google Play Music for free. And from there, you can access those songs from any compatible phone, tablet, or PC.How good a deal is this? By comparison, Amazon lets you upload 250 songs to Amazon Music for free, and you can upgrade to 250,000 songs for $25 per year. Microsoft’s Xbox Music does not provide free cloud storage of your music collection, but you can match some of your own music to Xbox Music Store and access it from other devices if you pay for Xbox Music Pass, which costs $99.99 per year.
From a Windows user’s perspective, of course, Google Play Music has some downsides. On Windows tablets and PCs, you can only access the service via a web browser (though it provides a Music Uploader app for importing your music, of course). And if you’re on Windows Phone, you’re out of luck: You can’t access Google Play Music from Windows Phone at all, on the web or via a native app.
Google makes Music apps for Android (of course), and iPhone and iPad, and you can of course stream your music through your HDTV and home theater using Chromecast.
To get started with Google Play Music, visit the service on the web and sign in with your Google account. You’ll see a notification about the new upload limit.

To add your music to Google Play Music, just click the Add Music button (in Chrome) and drag and drop. Or, if you’re using another browser, you will be prompted to download the Music Manager application, which can automate this process for you, importing your iTunes or Windows Media Player collections, or whatever folder(s) of music you wish to upload.
Google also offers a streaming music service that lets you stream all of the music in the Google Play Music Store to the web and compatible devices and apps, much like Spotify of Xbox Music Pass. This service costs $9.99 per month.

Sponsored search results coming to Google Play store

Google has announced that it will soon be adding sponsor spots to search results in the Google Play app store on Android. The ‘pilot program’ will work similarly to how ads work on the traditional Google Search page, allowing developers to have their apps highlighted.
This means that those looking to advertise will be bidding on individual search terms, and will come with a small tag on them to indicate that it is an advertisement. Google plans to keep the program limited at first, accessible only to a chosen set of advertisers, known as the ‘pilot group’.

It is likely that Google will begin including more and more app makers over the next few months.
Aside from this news, Google has also announced that it has paid out a total of $7 billion to app developers within the last year alone. The number is slowly getting higher and may soon rival Apple, which shelled out $10 billion to app developers in 2014, as previously reported.

Intel XDK Provides New Game Tools And Services for HTML5 Devs

To accelerate the deployment of new mobile games across an increasingly diverse spectrum of devices, Intel today released the latest Intel® XDK, an all-in-one HTML5 development environment that allows game developers to write a single app and automatically build versions for Android, iOS, and Windows app stores. Intel® XDK gives gamers the ability to enjoy the same experiences across their PCs, phones, and tablets, and lets developers focus on creating new experiences instead of porting games to different platforms. This version adds popular game engine support for Construct2, Cocos2D, Phaser, EaselJS part of CreateJS suite of libraries, and Pixi.js; includes an Asset Manager to access, manipulate, and manage game assets; plus the W3C Gamepad API for devices; and supports Google Play Game Services and Apple Game Center Services.

Sponsored Search Results Prepare To Invade Google Play

As online shopping experiences go, Google Play is remarkably clutter free. Whether you’re in the apps section or browsing movie selections, you’re greeted with the same, clean design. Right now, searches in Google Play don’t include the kinds of sponsored results you see when you search on Google.com. But soon, that will change.

“We are always looking for new ways to help you get your apps in front of potential new users,” Google told app developers in a statement. “That’s why, in the next few weeks, we will begin piloting sponsored search results on Google Play, bringing our unique expertise in search ads to the store.”

The first developers to try the advertising program will be those who are already running ads for their apps on Google.com. Google will widen the circle from there.

It’s not surprising that Google is bringing search-based advertising to Google Play, but whether users will appreciate it remains to be seen. For one thing, the content in the Google Play store is much different than the text results you see in Google.com searches. Apps, games, music, and videos are represented by icons. On smartphone screens, search results don’t leave much room for anything else, which means that Google will have to take care not to clutter an already crowded, small space when it introduces sponsored search results.

Google isn’t alone in looking for new ways to use its platforms to carry advertising. Apple has been pursuing ad dollars as well, using a variety of ad formats. Its iTunes Radio has seen some interesting sponsorships from North Face and Pepsi, among other big brands.

Report: 5 billion Google Android apps are vulnerable to cyberattack

More than five billion downloaded Google Android apps could be targeted by hackers, according to cybersecurity experts. Most forms of malware (96 percent) are focused on compromising Android, according to data from the FireEye cybersecurity firm.

Android is open source and allows more developers to contribute to the OS, but that also gives hackers a great opportunity to create sophisticated malware. Malware targeting Android drastically increased from 240,000 samples in 2013 up to 390,000 unique samples last year - and the problem seems to be accelerating.

"You can get all the code and then you can insert additional instructions and make it look and feel like the original app and no way for a consumer to tell the difference when they download it," said Jason Steer, director of technology strategy at FireEye, in a statement given to CNBC.

Finding methods to steal personal data and financial information is popular among cybercriminals, researchers noted.

Google’s Controversial Waze App Gains Ability To Display Nearby AMBER Alerts

Traffic-crowdsourcing app Waze, which describes itself as being about “contributing to the common good out there on the road,” has a new feature that certainly meshes with its goals: AMBER Alerts. Starting today, Waze users will receive AMBER Alerts about local, missing children when alerts are sent by authorities.

Because people use Waze while driving, the company has to be careful about when (and how) it displays AMBER Alerts. The system Waze is setting in place at the outset makes sense: the AMBER alert will only appear once your car has been stopped for 10 seconds. You can tap the map to hide the AMBER Alert, but if you don’t, the alert will disappear as soon as you begin driving again.

“Each AMBER alert will contain as much information as possible,” the company said in a blog post. “Alerts may contain a photo of the child as well as the model, make and license plate of a missing vehicle the child may be traveling in. Clicking ‘More Information’ will open a web browser where Wazers can obtain more information on the missing child.”

Certain police officers recently voiced concerns about how Waze may affect their safety. But including AMBER Alerts doesn’t strike me as an attempt to counter bad publicity. Alerting drivers is in keeping with Waze’s goal of contributing to the common good, and it’s a step that other apps have recently taken, including Facebook. Many mobile phones are also equipped to receive AMBER Alerts. Given that Waze is presenting the alerts in a way that doesn't distract drivers, it seems like a win for everyone.
