Apple admits to MacBook Pro GPU design flaw

Apple has finally admitted culpability in the long-running saga of MacBook Pro laptops with faulty graphics hardware, launching a repair extension programme for a swathe of its customers.

Buyers of Apple's 2011-era MacBook Pro have long maintained that the device suffers from a serious design flaw which causes premature failure. The GPU, a component which frequently varies in temperature depending on load, is connected to the motherboard via a lead-free solder which becomes brittle through repeated thermal cycling. This results in cracks which interfere with the GPU's operation, manifesting as graphics corruption, crashes, and entirely dead laptops. While Apple had replaced any faulty systems under warranty, those whose devices fail outside warranty - even those who had already received a replacement only to find it suffering from the same issue - had been left with a charge of several hundred pounds for a replacement motherboard, an approach which made Apple the target of a class-action lawsuit last year.

Now, Apple is finally stepping up to the plate and admitting that its previous approach was inadequate, while confessing that the flaw extends further than previously thought. 'Apple has determined that a small percentage of MacBook Pro systems may exhibit distorted video, no video, or unexpected system restarts,' the company has stated in a support announcement this week. 'These MacBook Pro systems were sold between February 2011 and December 2013,' the statement continues, admitting for the first time that the flaw extends beyond the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro devices sold in 2011 through to 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display laptops manufactured between mid-2012 to early 2013.

Those with any of the above devices who find them suffering from any GPU-related failures can apply to have their laptops repaired at Apple's expense, even if the failure occurs outside the warranty period. Additionally, and in an extremely welcome move, the company is contacting anyone who has paid for a repair that would now be covered under the new programme for a refund.

The repair extension programme goes live today in the US and Canada with other countries, including the UK, to benefit from the same programme next week. In all cases, the extension covers all affected laptops until the 27th of February 2016 or three years from its original purchase date - but only for the GPU design flaw, with all other claims being handled by standard warranty or chargeable repairs.

Full details are available on the Apple website.

Apple will continue to repair MacBooks with GPU fault

It seems that some MacBooks that were sold between February of 2011, until December of 2013 started to develop some pretty severe graphical issues when they were used. Back in 2014 a class action lawsuit was even brought against Apple, as it knew that the laptops were defective and failed to properly compensate customers. Now it seems it has seen the error of its ways and will be offering a new repair program, that will cover this defect until February, 2016.
The problem stems from a faulty soldering joint between the dedicated GPU and the mainboard and can lead to, “random bouts of graphical distortion, system instability, and system failures”. An online survey at the time of the class action suit garnered over 3,000 responses from 2011 MacBook Pro owners in a single week, so this was quite a widespread issue. The plaintiffs in this suit are asking Apple to acknowledge the defect and “reassess all prior warranty claims and pay the full costs of repairs and damages”.

Apple initially tried to make the problem go away with a software update that it said would solve the issues, unfortunately it did not and it not admitted any fault until now, with the launch of the MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues. The site states that “Apple has determined that a small percentage of MacBook Pro systems may exhibit distorted video, no video, or unexpected system restarts.”
This isn’t the first time that Apple has experienced an issue like this, with a very similar issue cropping up on 2008 model MacBooks and it also extended the warranty of these laptops as well for this fault. If you have a MacBook that is affected by the issues then you can check its coverage on the Apple support site or you can bring it into your local dealer so that they can check it. At this time however the extended warranty program is US and Canada only with support for other countries coming soon.

Apple Offers Repair Extension Program For Defective MacBook Pros

Today, in an apparent response to a class action lawsuit, Apple rolled out a new free repair extension program for select MacBook Pro users suffering from serious graphical issues.
The lawsuit alleges that the new models Apple introduced in 2011 were supposed to have improved graphical performance that was three times faster than previous generations. However, according to the lawsuit, "What Apple did not disclose was that achieving these graphical feats caused the laptops to run so hot that the solder attached to the laptops' high-powered graphics processor would deform and crack, causing graphical anomalies and, eventually, total system failure."
The affected models include 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro laptops manufactured in 2011, and 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina models manufactured from mid-2012 to early 2013. Symptoms include distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen, no video on the computer screen or external display, or unexpected shut downs and restarts.
Apple's new service offers to repair affected MacBook Pro systems free of charge, and it even offers to reimburse users who may have already paid for such a repair. Apple offers a mail-in service as well as an option to carry in your defective product to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for service.
Such a move may help cool down anyone who's been burned by this hot button issue.
Users with affected models of MacBook Pro laptops can find more information here.

Apple fixes a flaw in Macs in just a week

    Must be a record
A flaw in Apple Macs is so bad that Apple did not have time to go through its normal ritual of ignoring it and pretending it only effects a small number of users.

Jobs' Mob announced that the 'Freak' security flaw has been fixed only a few days after it was revealed. The vulnerability in web encryption technology could enable attackers to spy on communications of users of Apple's Safari browser, according to researchers who uncovered the flaw. Apple spokesman Ryan James said the computer had developed a software update to remediate the vulnerability, which would be pushed out next week.
Google spokeswoman Liz Markman said the company had also developed a patch, which it has provided to partners. She declined to say when users could expect to receive those upgrades. Google typically does not directly push out Android software updates. Instead they are handled by device makers and mobile carriers.
The Washington Post reported that the bug left users of Apple and Google devices vulnerable to cyberattack when visiting hundreds of thousands of websites, including Whitehouse.gov, NSA.gov and FBI.gov. Whitehouse.gov and FBI.gov have been fixed, but NSA.gov remains vulnerable, the paper cited Johns Hopkins cryptographer Matthew D. Green as saying.
A group of nine researchers discovered that they could force web browsers to use an form of encryption that was intentionally weakened to comply with US government regulations that ban American companies from exporting the strongest encryption standards, according to the paper.
Once they caused the site to use the weaker export encryption standard, they were then able to break the encryption within a few hours. That could allow hackers to steal data and potentially launch attacks on the sites themselves by taking over elements on a page, the newspaper reported.

13-Inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air Shipment Times Slips Ahead Of ‘Spring Forward’ Event

On this Monday, Apple is co-hosting it’s major event named ‘Spring Forward’ which has generated high hopes for all Apple fans out there. The media event on Monday will showcase some of the most tempting gadgets like the Apple Watch and much more. As times shrinks by, there is some pre-heat pileup sensed inside of Apple. There is a lot to expect from Apple and they know about it.

What we found out recently is that Apple has slipped the shipment time from ”in stock” to ”1 business day”. This change in shipment times is implied on both, the MacBook Air and the 13-Inch MacBook Pro. The date is devised, as to overcome the cumbersome responsibility of the event. Recently, we reported that there will be a refreshed look of the 13-Inch MacBook Air which will be packed with Intel’s new and latest Broadwell processors along with improvements in the graphics department with an Intel HD 6000. But we know what will take you guys aback – Apple might also upgrade the 13-Inch MacBook Pro. The update may include hardware changes similar to that of the revamped MacBook Air model.
Hardware Upgrade For MacBook Pro As Well?

The details and dates to shipment are slipped all over North America along with Online Apple Stores in Canada, United States and Mexico. All of the regions corresponds the same ”1 business day” approximate. However, the United Kingdom and Australian Online Store have no sign of the changed shipment time and regular ”in stock” remains. In some regions of the United States like California and New York the availability of MacBook Air and MacBook Pro remains unchanged and has ‘in stock’ availability.

    Images Courtesy: macrumors.com
The faster more sophisticated Intel Broadwell processors are available for all variants of the two models, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. However, more powerful chips are yet not available for the bigger MacBook Pro 15-Inch model and are expected to arrive later this year according to reports. Nonetheless, it is possible that Apple might leave the upgrade of its MacBooks for a later date and focus solely on Apple Watch but you never know how Apple may surprise us all. This is it for now folks, we’ll let you know more on this as soon as reports arrive. When do you guys think will the MacBook upgrades arrive?

Apple Made Boot Camp For Windows 7 Redundant On The New MacBook Pro And MacBook Air Models

Apple has stopped supporting Windows 7 with Boot Camp on the newly refreshed MacBook Air and MacBook Pro – Apple reported on its Boot Camp Support document. However, Boot Camp is still supported with Windows 8 or later but installing Windows 7 is now impossible.

People unfamiliar with the Boot Camp term should know its mechanics. Boot Camp is Apple’s built architecture that allows users to install Microsoft Windows on Mac machines. This way users who adored Apple’s hardware but worked on Windows OS could be satisfied on both terms.
Apple No Longer Supports Windows 7 Boot Camp In MacBook Pro And MacBook Air Models

The same operation was introduced in 2013 for Mac which according to Apple will be ceased to come in the future Macs. However, Boot Camp continued to show support for Windows 7 in the year 2014. The 2014 models of the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air will be Apple’s last machines to support Windows 7 installations. Even though Boot Camp has been made redundant, users can still continue to use Microsoft Windows using VVMware Fusion and Parallels.

Phasing out Windows 7 support in MacBook variants with Boot Camp is not at all surprising concerning the age of the installation. The first Windows Boot Camp arrived in 2009 which was followed by Windows 8 in 2012. Despite a six year old age, Windows 7 is still the most widely used operating system to run on a MacBook.

Mac users have shown resistance to Apple’s decision to drop the Windows 7 Boot Camp and probably, they wont be happy about the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air variants as well. Windows users are more satisfied with Windows 7 because there seems to be a user interface acceptance issue along with its cost. The Windows 8 design is deviated from Windows 7 which means users don’t find it either more usable and or appealing to shift.
Windows 10 on the other hand would launch a different approach to both its utility and user interface. This is because Microsoft has melted Windows 7 visuals and Windows 8 functionality to its newest release. There has been no news for Windows 10 price just yet but it will be a free update for all Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users. That’s all for now folks, do follow us for more news and rumors. Comment your thoughts what you feel like the Boot Camp continuity.

Refreshed MacBook Pro's PCIe 3.0 x4 storage system is blazing fast

When reviews of the revised 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display started hitting web over the past several days, most focused on the modest speed gains the new Intel Core chips deliver. This meant that most glossed over the fact that the new MacBook Pro includes a ridiculously fast storage system that few are able to rival.
For those not keeping score, Apple’s 2015 MacBook Pro included the usual upgrades such as a new processor, faster memory and a larger battery. New systems are also equipped with a PCIe 3.0 x4 interface which translates to four I/O lanes for the speedy Samsung-made flash drive. Its predecessor shipped with PCIe 2.0 x2, or two I/O lanes.
The PCIe 2.0 system wasn’t exactly a slouch as it trumped standard SATA III SSDs found in many desktops today. But with twice as many lanes, is it realistic to expect double the performance from the storage system? Apparently the answer is “yes.”
Computerworld recently put the Apple’s 2015 model to the test. Using OS X storage benchmark BlackMagic Disk Speed Test, Apple’s latest clocked write speeds of 1,416.7MB/sec and reads of 1,335.9 MB/sec. That kind of performance is on par with something like OCZ’s RevoDrive 350 for desktops or the 3x SSDs in RAID 0 found in MSI’s GS70 Stealth Pro notebook.
With such a speedy storage system on board, Apple’s latest will likely feel fast for years to come although after a certain storage performance threshold, it’s hard to notice any day-to-day improvements unless you’re working with professional editing software or the like.

How To Disable / Enable Turbo Boost On Intel Based Mac

Here’s a complete tutorial how you can disable or enable Turbo Boost on an Intel powered Mac computer.

Without a doubt, jumping onboard the Intel bandwagon was the best thing Apple pulled off in recent years. And down the road, the company has been making great strides when it comes to the processors it has chosen to use with its entire computer lineup, with Turbo Boost being a swift little addition, giving the user a slight boost in speed over the advertised limit so that things are done in a much more efficient manner when the need arises.
But while Turbo Boost is a great little piece of technology to have under the hood of our Macs, it can, at times, become absolutely annoying. When Turbo Boost kicks in, it overclocks the CPU, which in turn heats up your Mac, which, as you might’ve guessed by now, kicks into action the CPU fan, subsequently making a lot of noise. If you don’t want that sort of thing to happen to you, then there’s a small little app which you can download right away to manually disable or enable Turbo Boost technology. This is something which is controlled automatically by OS X, and the user has no control over it at all. Thankfully, this little app changes all that.
    Advertisements

Enable / Disable Turbo Boost On Your Mac And Save Battery Life, Keep Things Less Noisy

The little app is called Turbo Boost Switcher, and is absolutely free, and you can grab it from here. Before you install it, make sure that your Mac supports Turbo Boost technology, otherwise the app will be of no use to you.
In order to find out if your Mac supports Turbo Boost or not, first of all find the model of your Mac. You can do so by clicking on the ‘Apple’ logo in the OS X Menu bar, then click on ‘About this Mac.’ The resulting window will show you a bunch of information, with the first line in the ‘Overview’ tab specifying the model of your Mac. Once you’ve noted that down, simply head over to support.apple.com and see the technical specifications of your Mac to see whether or not Turbo Boost technology is supported. If it’s clearly mentioned in text that it is, then simply download Turbo Boost Switcher and you’re golden.
Lastly, it’s worth mentioning here that Turbo Boost Switcher will indeed give your battery life a great boost, which means that the app is a handy little thing to have under your belt if you have a Mac which has gone way above its charge cycles.

Apple’s Skylake MacBook Pro Lineup To Come With These Intel Processors

With Apple looking it refresh its high-end notebook lineup, the MacBook Pro family, Intel has released the perfect weapon of choice that will go well with these powerful machines.

MacBook Pro To Feature The Following Intel Skylake processors

It was high time that Apple had upgraded its high-end notebook lineup. The 12 inch underpowered MacBook was definitely something that would have been appreciated with the company’s extreme affinity towards making the machine as slim as possible, if not for a boatload of sacrifices that had to be incorporated in order to make this possible. Coming back to the chips that will be powering up the future MacBook Pro, the 15 inch version is most likely going to feature the following processor models:

    • Core i7-6770HQ: A 2.6GHz quad-core processor
    • Core i7-6870HQ: A 2.7GHz quad-core processor
    • Core i7-6970HQ: A 2.8GHz quad-core processor

While we say this, keep in mind that Intel also released a family of Xeon mobile processors, so these chips could also end up powering the MacBook Pro lineup in the near future. The processors (image given directly below) could definitely define the raw processing capabilities of this new lineup, but it could also mean that Apple would be forced to exponentially increase the pricing of its notebook family, because just look at those prices. Additionally, Apple does not like to skimp out on incorporating these notebooks with fast PCI-E based flash storage that deliver blistering read and write speeds, so we could be looking at a pretty expensive product lineup in the foreseeable future (possibly at WWDC 2016 or just a brief sliver of what to expect later down the road).

    Advertisements

With the introduction of Type-C USB ports, we could see such an interface present on the upcoming MacBook Pro family, which would provide a new combination of power delivery and high speed data transfers from a single port. The extra processing power could also mean that Apple could incorporate high resolution displays inside the MacBook Pro family, since these machines would effortlessly be able to push a high amount of pixels across all that real estate.

A while ago, we detailed that since Apple does a good job in harmoniously placing its software and hardware together (case in point would be the company’s A9X chipset, and its respective benchmarks as it takes on Intel Skylake Core M processors). This could end up becoming a catalyst for Apple to sever its dependency on Intel, at least for the successor of its 12 inch MacBook, which we hope is a worthy successor to the abysmal product that we got to witness last year. Regardless, are you excited to see Apple’s MacBook Pro come incorporated with Intel’s latest slew of powerful Skylake mobile processors?
    Let us know your thoughts.

Macs Expected To Reach Shipments Of 20 million for 2016 – Slow Smartphone Growth Might Have A Silver Lining

While Apple did refresh its iMac lineup in 2015, the latest report states that Macs, which both include desktop and notebook machines are expected to reach a hefty number of shipments for the tech giant, translating them into a heavy revenue generator.

Skylake Powered MacBooks Most Likely Getting Announced During Month Of March – Will These Powerful Machines Pick Off Where iPhone Growth Has Slowed?

According to the latest statistics, supply makers are going to start producing Apple’s 12 and 13.3 inch MacBooks at the end of the first quarter or in early second quarter, while the powerful 15 inch models will start getting produced from the third quarter of this year. Now for the statistical data, Apple had shipped 5.312 million MacBook products during the fourth quarter of 2015, which was a slip of 7 percent from the previous quarter and 4 percent from 2014.
For the entire 12 month span of 2015, shipments of Macs were up 4.03 percent to 20.38 million units, while Mac revenues had increased 2.61 percent to $25.273 billion USD. This year, we might be looking at the same figure for all of the machines combined, and there is a slight chance that the figure might increase since Intel’s Skylake processors are going to be powering on the MacBook Pro lineup of the company. In our previous report, we detailed that the 15 inch notebooks are most likely going to be running the following processors:

One analyst is quite optimistic of Apple’s Macs, and states that if mobile sales do slow down, then these products will definitely contribute to the company’s growth. What are your thoughts on the upcoming machines?

Fix Apple Magic Mouse Losing Connection Issue When You Bump It On The Table

Is your Apple Magic Mouse losing connection with your Mac when you bump it on the table? Here’s the fix for it.

A Simple Bump Will Turn Your Magic Mouse Off, But You Can Fix It Yourself For Free

The Apple Magic Mouse is a design and engineering marvel, all thanks to its sleek curves and innovative touch surface for scrolling and doing a bunch of other tasks in OS X. And while the Magic Mouse does have its set of perks, you cannot rule out the fact that it comes with a bunch of flaws as well. Keeping that in mind, there’s an issue plaguing Magic Mouse users where the device will simply lose connection with a connected Mac as soon as you gently bump it on the table.
The issue can be traced back to the fact that there is too much space between the battery itself and the external cover that keeps it in place. Bumping the Magic Mouse on the table simply moves the battery out of place, causing the mouse to ‘reboot,’ hence losing connection and you’re left with waiting in fury as things come back to normality.
But how do you fix the issue?

It’s rather simple, and we have a series of photos showing what needs to be done. Details can be found right after the photos themselves.

To put things in simple words – grab a piece of paper, fold it a couple of times and place it between the empty space where the battery and battery cover is. Close the battery cover, make sure the folds aren’t straining anything, and try gently bumping your Magic Mouse on the table and see if it loses connection again.

Quite frankly, I’ve been using this trick for over an year now, and things are going great for me. My Magic Mouse never ceases to lose a connection no matter how hard I smash it on the table, but of course, I wouldn’t recommend anyone doing that.
Also keep in mind that this issue is long gone with the Magic Mouse 2, since the new pointing accessory from Apple has a built-in battery. If you do, however, face the issue on the new Magic Mouse 2, then we highly recommend that you take your unit for replacement or repairs. But for owners of the Magic Mouse, try out this fix, and you won’t be disappointed in any case.

Apple launches repair program for Mac Pros after GPU failures

Back in 2013, Apple impressed us all with its new Mac Pro, featuring a cylinder design and unique cooling system along with some powerful components. However, it seems that some units are suffering from issues, with FirePro GPUs starting to fail, so Apple is issuing an extended repair program for users to send their systems in and get replacement video cards.
Units affected were manufactured between February 8th and April 11th last year. Users with affected units may experience system instability, a lack of video output or even distorted video output.

Apple as well as Apple’s authorized retail partners will be repairing eligible models for free right up until the 30th of May 2018, so if you have any issues or begin to face some before then, you will be able to get it fixed. People are facing issues with AMD’s FirePro D500 as well as the D700. Mac Pros based on the FirePro D300 are not listed for repair.
Those who send their systems in for repair should expect a 3-5 day wait before getting it back.

Apple’s New Program Will Replace Your MacBook’s Faulty USB-C Cable

If you bought a 12-inch Retina MacBook from Apple and happen to get a faulty USB-C cable along with it, then Apple will generously replace it, all thanks to its newly launched program.

Your 12-inch MacBook’s USB-C Cable Might Be Broken, And Apple Will Replace It For Free

According to Apple, the USB-C shipped with your MacBook might be faulty due to a design issue, and the company will replace it absolutely free of cost, provided you happen to have a faulty cable in the first place.
    According to Apple:
A limited number of Apple USB-C charge cables that were included with MacBook computers through June 2015 may fail due to a design issue. As a result, your MacBook may not charge or only charge intermittently when it’s connected to a power adapter with an affected cable.
Apple will provide a new, redesigned USB-C charge cable, free of charge, to all eligible customers. This program also covers Apple USB-C charge cables that were sold as a standalone accessory.
For MacBook owners who provided a valid mailing address during the product registration process or Apple Online Store purchase, Apple will send you a new cable by the end of February 2016.

According to Apple, affected cables have “Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China.” printed on them, whereas OK cable have a serial number at the end. In other words, if you have a cable with “Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China.” followed by a serial number, then you’re good to go and don’t need a replacement.

Apple requires your 12-inch MacBook’s serial number in order to confirm eligibility as well, and you can hop right into the whole program by clicking on this link.
We highly recommend that you get a replacement immediately if you fulfill the requirements as a damaged cable might eventually end up causing harm to your MacBook as well. After all, the 12-inch Retina MacBook is an expensive piece of hardware, and it’s good practice to keep things as pristine as possible during usage. And what better way to maintain that by getting a free replacement from Apple itself.
While Apple’s USB-C cable lives not the ‘expensive’ side of the spectrum, and users will be more inclined towards buying cheaper alternatives from places like Amazon, we on the other hand recommend that you do not do so, as cheaper cables can do more harm than good.
A few saved bucks on a cheaper cable versus a damaged notebook is not worth it.

Third-party flash storage upgrades are finally coming to Retina Macbooks

When Apple first introduced the new Retina Macbook Pro line several years ago, it also made the jump to flash storage. However, this also made it much harder for users to buy third-party drives to upgrade their storage down the line as Apple chose to use non-standard parts, meaning that even finding a replacement flash storage device could be a challenge.
In the 2013 and up Macbook Pro Retina and Macbook Air laptops, flash storage is difficult to reach but not impossible. Fortunately, thanks to OWC, users can now upgrade the flash storage on these laptops to either a 480GB drive or a 1TB version.

These SSDs are designed to work with any Macbook Pro Retina 2013 or Macbook Air 2013 and newer. The actual process of installing is a little tricky but OWC supplies all of the tools needed as well as instructions to get the job done.
Doing this isn’t cheap though, a 480GB SSD will cost you $400 and the 1TB SSD will cost $650, it is a lot of money but if you couldn’t spring for more than 128GB or 256GB of storage the first time around, this solution is still cheaper than buying a new Macbook entirely.
