Hacker Group Threatens to Take Down PSN and Xbox Live This Christmas

Another hacker group has threatened to take down the PSN and Xbox Live networks over Christmas, as is tradition. Though this year the plan is to have those networks inaccessible for more than a day.
They claim that they aren’t in any way associated with the group that is assumed to be associated with the takedown last year.
Are the PSN and Xbox Live networks becoming the most attractive targets for attention seeking script kiddies?

Is it possible that they’d be able to DDoS those two networks for an entire week? It could be, though even with the most sophisticated of botnets and the amount of bandwidth needed to consistently target those networks, one day would probably be the limit before measures are taken to stop it. Such DDoS’s can’t really be prevented initially, but once they’re underway, ISP’s and the server owners can inevitably offload that malicious traffic, so that network engineers can get the services up and running relatively smoothly again. The nature of a DDoS means that there’s going to be so many IP addresses bombarding the services with traffic, that blocking them all could itself be a tedious task. But there are tools that can help to at least lessen the impact.
    Advertisements

Plus, doing that for a week gives authorities far more opportunity and data to track where the C&C server is for the botnet they’re going to use. That could potentially compromise their identities adn the botnet that they probably haven’t setup which can hurt their relationship with other legitimate hacking groups. I’s not really a very smart or well thought out plan.
This particular group has laid claim to taking down a number of gaming services. Among those they claim to have subdued are Call of Duty: Black Ops servers, Star Wars: The Old Republic servers, GTA 5 servers, and even Reddit itself.
Last year we saw Xbox Live and PSN go down briefly as a result of actions taken by Lizard Squad. This didn’t last nearly as long as a week, though it was devastating enough due to people wanting to play on their new consoles and with their just received games.

Xbox Live Hit by Phantom Squad DDoS Attack

Only a few days ago, the “hacking group” known as Phantom Squad threatened to shut down Xbox Live and PlayStation Network during the Christmas period. Before I move onto today’s development, please note that the press shouldn’t really be referring to groups like Lizard Squad and Phantom Squad as hacking groups. I’ve fallen into that trap myself without thinking about it, and it’s not actually an accurate term. Using a DDoS to disrupt networking services is not hacking, and we shouldn’t give these groups a title which overemphasize their abilities. Putting that aside, it seems Phantom Squad have lived up to their promise and conducted a DDoS attack on Xbox Live. Here we can see them taking responsibility for the service outage and also tweeted about the lack of security on these networks:

This might indicate they have a motive to expose Xbox Live and PlayStation Network’s security loopholes. However, this isn’t the way to go about it, and only impacts on the enjoyment factor for new console owners during Christmas. Rather surprisingly, Twitter has suspended the groups account but luckily Ars Technica UK captured some of their Tweets. In lieu of recent events, Microsoft issued a status update on its support site which reads:
“Hey Xbox members, are you having trouble purchasing or managing your subscriptions for Xbox Live? Are you also having an issue with signing into Xbox Live? We are aware of these issues and are working to get it fixed ASAP! Thank you for being patient while we work. We’ll post another update when more information becomes available.”
Phantom Squad’s egotistical and attention seeking traits reached fever pitch as they asked for retweets to prevent PSN from being the next target:

Any hope of Phantom Squad caring about security of having some sort of moral purpose is discredited by this tweet. Clearly, they just want to cause havoc and feel better about themselves by spoiling other people’s Christmas. As a result, they need to reassess their behaviour and comprehend how they would feel if their Christmas was spoilt by an unknown group on the internet.

Phantom Squad Threatens Week-Long Xbox Live and PSN Attack over Christmas

Following its attack on Xbox Live earlier this week, hacker group Phantom Squad has threatened to take down both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for a week over Christmas, calling its first successful attempt a demonstration, The Independent reports. The Twitter account that Phantom Squad used to make these threats has now been suspended, but the group has returned with a new account, @PhantomLair.
“Why do we take down PSN and Xbox Live? Because cyber security does not exist,” the old Phantom Squad account tweeted, followed by, “Some men just want to watch PSN and Xbox Live burn.”
Phantom Squad is claiming that it temporarily took down PSN earlier today, but this has not yet been confirmed:

    PhantomSquad @PhantomLair
    PSN #Offline

The hackers are also threatening to DDoS reddit, asking follower to vote for their preferred target:

    PhantomSquad @PhantomLair
We was wondering we didnt send attacks but, We want to ask what You want off next.

    35%

    24%

    41%

    Vote 350 votes • 9 hours left

The threatened attacks mirror those committed by Lizard Squad last Christmas, whose attacks on Xbox Live and PSN were used to advertise their new Lizard Stresser DDoS tool, which offered bespoke attacks on websites for a fee.
“The only reason we are doing this its @Xbox & @PlayStation Fault [sic],” Phantom Squad tweeted earlier today. “Because we are proving there is no cyber security PSN Fix it b4 it happens.”

January’s Xbox Live Games with Gold announced

Those of us getting a shiny new Xbox One on Friday can already add another four games to their collection. Microsoft have announced the titles coming to Games with Gold next month.

Top of the bunch is the first year of Killer Instinct. The free-to-play base was an interesting idea, but now everybody will gain access to the entire roster of fighters as part of the Gold offering. Originally $39.99, this set will be worth checking out for fighting fans.
If you fancy something fresher, 3D beat’em up Zheros offers a single player and local co-op throwback to classic genre titles of yore. Announced earlier this year, players punch and combo their way through two worlds, almost certainly dishing out traditional couch justice when deserved.
Zheros will be available to pick up from January 16 until February 15.

On Xbox One with backwards compatibility and Xbox 360, players will get two popular titles to start the year with on Gold.
Dirt Showdown is less deep than its numbered predecessors, but offers a variety of fun game modes for more casual drivers.
If you need something a little more time consuming, Deus Ex: Human Revolution will also be available for free. Unfortunately, it’s not the definitive Director’s Cut which not only included all of the DLC, but fixed a variety of the original versions issues.
Deux Ex will join the service on January 16th.
New Xbox owners will already be able to access The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, Thief, Sacred 3 and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising before the end of the month.

Snoop Dogg Demands Bill Gates Fix His Shizzle Following Xbox Live Outage, Threatens PlayStation Defection

It what seems to be an increasing occurrence for gaming consoles (on both the Microsoft and Sony sides of the aisle), Microsoft experienced an extended Xbox Live outage yesterday that affected millions of gamers across the globe. The outage affected both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One game consoles, making it impossible for console owners to hit up their family multiplayer games or even perform simple tasks such as chats.
While such service interruptions are annoying, we can’t really see it as a reason to get incredibly worked up about an outage that lasts for just a few hours. However, someone forgot to relay that message to rap mogul Snoop Dogg, who went on a 15-second profanity-laced tirade against Microsoft in an Instagram video.

EA's Vault access free next week for Xbox One Gold members

The EA Vault is being opened to everyone with an Xbox Live Gold membership on the Xbox One starting next week. That means that anyone that meets those requirements will get access to the 14 games that have made their way into the vault recently.

That free access is for a limited amount of time, however, and will last from January 14th through the 24th. But that still gets you access to all the games that have been placed in the vault, and some of them are actually still quite enjoyable. You'll find Battlefield Hardline, Dragon Age: Inquisiition, Titanfall, FIFA 15, Madden 15, Battlefield 4 and more.

If you want regular access to the EA Vailt, and to the other features of EA Access, it's around $5 a month or $30 per year. There're other benefits as well, like being able to play games a few days before the actual release and giving you 10% off of EA games should you decide to make the purchase. This is one program that the PlayStation 4 doesn't have, as Sony has said it didn't see value in the EA Access program.

Xbox Live Games With Gold for February announced

The full line-up for Xbox Live's Games With Gold program has been announced, and though there isn't much, it's a strong inventory for both the Xbox One and the Xbox 360.

This month they're digging deep into their inventory with Gears of War 2 and Hand of Fate. Thankfully the games available for the Xbox 360 are also completely playable through backwards compatibility on the Xbox One, so if you've already upgraded, you can enjoy all the titles listed below. The first batch of games, Hand of Fate and Sacred Citadel, will be available on February 1st while Styx and Gears of War 2 will become available on February 16th. Happy hunting.

    Xbox One

    • Hand of Fate - An action role-playing game with deck-building and roguelike elements.
    • Styx: Master of Shadows - A stealth adventure with RPG mechanics.

Xbox 360 (backward compatible on Xbox One)

    • Gears of War 2 - One of the best cover-based shooters for the Xbox 360.
    • Sacred Citadel - A cooperative beat-em-up game.

    Xbox Live Is Currently “Limited”

We all have our favourite way of playing online, and those that use Xbox Live may have a bit of trouble this morning when it comes to enjoying that quick game before work or school. Currently, the service is more struggling than it is managing as several parts of the service are listed as having difficulty.
The affected services include people’s ability to buying downloadable items and downloading any previously brought items. This means that if you are looking at downloading a game or treating yourself to a DLC, now might not be the best time. If you are one of the people who likes to stream some music or videos the Xbox Video and Music stores are also currently experiencing problems, joined by Blinkbox also having issues. Xbox Live is back up after 15 hours of issues

Last night, Xbox Live began having a lot of issues with its core services, which spread through to things like app connectivity and games. During this time, people had trouble launching apps like YouTube, Netflix, Plex or catch up services, users also couldn’t access things like the store or go online on several games. However, after 15 hours or so of maintenance, Microsoft has managed to get everything running back to normal.
Right now it is suspected that someone launched a DDOS attack at Xbox Live, taking out some of its services.

Microsoft has yet to comment on the issues so there is no confirmation on exactly what happened but this is becoming a common issue, with services being knocked out for seven days in a row so far.

Xbox Live still experience widespread issues with purchasing content

Earlier this morning (EST) the Xbox Live service was experiencing some unscheduled downtime that affected a number of different users, 15 hours of downtime total. The issues were supposedly fixed and the Xbox Live service up and running, but it seems that there are still some issues in regards to purchasing content from the store and with using EA Access.

    An error you might encounter

Users are reporting that they're having difficulty actually buying or even accessing content from the store, from movies to games. Even more it seems that users are even having trouble downloading games they already own. EA Access is similarly affected, in that you'll be unable to actually download any of the games from the Vault or otherwise.

The ongoing issues should be resolved shortly, but we'll keep you apprised of the situation as it unfolds. Hopefully this is just a small network error and not related to any sort of cyber-attack, amateur or otherwise. Microsoft has an official statement on their status site, saying "We understand some of you might be having a tough time signing in to Xbox Live. Additionally, we realize that some of you are experiencing issues purchasing new subscriptions or managing existing subscriptions. We want you to know our top engineers are on the case and are working toward a fix. Thanks for your patience in the meantime! We will provide an update as soon as we know more."

    April Games with Gold Announced

Microsoft are really bringing it this April for its Games with Gold offering. There’s something for everybody, and not a stinker or filler game in sight.
Take a moment if you need to, at least until you’ve recovered from the shock of an online service’s “free” offering not having a single weak link.
Granted, the Xbox 360 titles are a little older, and both Xbox One games have been available quite cheap before, but it’s nice to see a month of Games with Gold with nothing you have to Google before downloading.
Things will kick off next week with The Wolf Among Us. Arguably Telltale’s best game of the last 18 months, complete with fairytale madness, murder mystery and, of course, Bufkin.

    Bufkin will remember that.
If that isn’t to your tastes, the second half of the month will get you Sunset Overdrive. The Insomniac Games developed title got more than decent reviews when it was released and has the advantage of being an AAA title many of us might have missed.
Coming across from the Xbox 360 will be the original Dead Space and, in the second half of the month, sex toy massacre simulator Saints Row IV. As always, both titles will be available to pick up and play on Xbox One as soon as they’re released.
All the Games with Gold will be available to download at no extra cost to anybody with a current Gold subscription.

    Boa tarde,
