Biostar preps Intel ‘Skylake’ mainboards with DDR3 and DDR4 memory slots

Even though the vast majority of enthusiast-class mainboards for Intel Corp.’s upcoming code-named “Skylake” processors will rely mostly on DDR4 memory, lower-end solutions may support DDR3L as well. Moreover, for maximum flexibility, Biostar is readying two LGA1151 motherboards with both DDR3L and DDR4 memory slots.
Biostar plans to release two rather unique mainboards for Intel “Skylake” processors that will wed retro and modern technologies. The Biostar Hi-Fi H170Z3 (mATX) and the Biostar Hi-Fi B150Z5 (ATX) motherboards are based on Intel’s H170 and B150 core-logic sets, respectively. The chipsets do not support overclocking of microprocessors, but still provide rather compelling feature-set. Both motherboards feature 7-phase voltage regulator modules, hence, will support all upcoming “Skylake-S” central processing units, including those with high thermal design power.
The two mainboards will support Intel’s upcoming chips in LGA1151 packaging as well as two 288-pin DDR4 modules, PCIe x16 graphics cards, SATA Express storage devices, solid-state drives in M.2 form-factor (Hi-Fi H170Z3 only) as well as regular things like USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, DVI and so on. The mainboards will also feature 8-channel audio shielded from EMI for improved quality.

In addition to modern features, the motherboards will also support numerous retro technologies, including two 240-pin DDR3 memory slots, two or three PCI (32-bit/33MHz) slots, a D-sub display output as well as a PS/2 port for a mouse, according to a report from AnandTech.

Not a lot of manufacturers prep Intel LGA1151 mainboards with both DDR3 and DDR4 memory slots. Virtually nobody (except Biostar) plans to offer “Skylake-S” motherboards with PCI slots and PS/2 ports. D-Sub outputs are also no longer found on mainstream solutions.
Biostar plans to address price-conscious market segments with its and Hi-Fi H170Z3 and Hi-Fi B150Z5 mainboards. Given rather unique feature-set of the platforms, it is logical to expect the company to charge a small premium, but in general the motherboards are not going to be too expensive.
Disclaimer: It is impossible to use DDR4 and DDR3 at the same time because of technological limitations and different voltages. Moreover, not all DDR3 memory modules will work on LGA1151 motherboards as officially only DDR3L memory with 1.35V voltage is supported.

Realtek Develops New Onboard LAN Chip to Win Back Gamer Crowd

In a bid to regain market share lost to Intel and Killer (Qualcomm) in the DIY motherboard market, particularly with motherboards targeted at online gaming PC builds; Realtek unveiled a new onboard LAN solution called the Realtek Dragon. Intel and Killer have replaced Realtek as a preferred onboard Ethernet chip provider for DIY PC motherboards over the past two generations, as perception of their lower driver overhead, lower latencies, and other advantages spread. Sensing that merely improving drivers for its existing RTL8111 family of PCIe gigabit Ethernet PHY chips won't fix the situation, Realtek sought to give its latest generation an off-beat brand name that it hopes could appeal to the DIY crowd.

At the heart of the Realtek Dragon is the new RTL8118AS, a PCIe gigabit Ethernet PHY, much like the 8111 family. Realtek says it made refinements to the chip over previous generations, which will offer better performance (lower driver overhead) for traffic with small UDP packets, which is how most online multiplayer games work, and lower power consumption than competing solutions, such as the Killer E2200. Realtek even set a new branding for its chip, and will allow motherboard makers to print it on their PCBs, just as they print branding for Killer or Intel onboard LAN solutions. Realtek Dragon will make its debut with certain socket LGA1151 motherboards by ECS.

Gigabyte Z170 Motherboards Shown off – Legacy and Gaming G1 Series Impressive in Designs

Gigabyte has shown off their Z170 motherboards, further providing a glimpse at the features and design schemes which will be adopted by Skylake ready boards. These new LGA 1151 socket based boards will have full support of Intel’s 6th generation Skylake processors which make debut on 5th August 2015. Gigabyte has several motherboards in their portfolio and we will be talking about the Legacy, Gaming G1 and SOC series.

Gigabyte Z170 Motherboards are Feature Loaded and Boast Insane Designs

Back at Computex, we talked about the Gigabyte Gaming G1 series which includes four new products with the Z170 chipset. These include the Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming G1, GA-Z170X Gaming 7, GA-Z170X Gaming 5 and lastly, the GA-Z170X Gaming 3 motherboards. On the legacy side, Gigabyte will be introducing several boards but we only have information on two of them which include the GA-Z170X-UD5 TH and GA-Z170X-UD3. There are no images for the overclock series but slides detailing the new features of the Z170 SOC Force are available to get taste of what Gigabyte has been cooking for their ultimate super overclocking motherboard. It should be pointed that Gigabyte also has a Mini-ITX, GA-Z170N WiFi and several additional legacy products but we would be looking at the top products of this lineup today.
    Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming G1

The Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming G1 is so far the flagship motherboard of the lineup. Featuring a LGA 1151 socket, this motherboard comes in an E-ATX form factor which gets power from a 24-Pin ATX connector. The CPU socket is provided power through a single 8-Pin connector that feeds power to the processor to make it functional. The motherboard, along with all others in the lineup make use of a the highest quality IR / Infineon Digital Power Phase Design with a Gen.4 IR Digital Controller and Gen.3 PowIRstage ICs. The motherboard in specific has a 22 Phase power design which is impressive. There’s more, aside from the high-end black capacitors, there”s a Turbo B-Clock chip (Built-in Advanced Performance Tuning IC) that is able to push wide range of BCLK frequency tuning in ranges from 90-200 MHz (aside from 100, 125, 167 MHz) which were previously available.
Right next to the CPU socket is a large thermal frame that extends from the I/O to the bottom most Sound Blaster chip. The new thermal armor design makes the board more attractive and sturdy. The heatsink is a large copper based solution with water cooling ready that has G1/4 threaded fittings. A similar heatsink is featured on the PCH and thermal armor for the SATA ports. Talking about SATA ports, there are 10 SATA III 6 GB/s ports and four SATA Express ports. Two USB 3.0 front panel connectors provide 4 USB 3.0 ports while two USB 2.0 ports can also be found at the bottom of the port. Expansion slots include four PCI-e 3.0 x16 and three PCI-e 3.0 x1 slots. As this is a new board, it also features two M.2 SATA ports, rated at 32 GB/s (each). The motherboard comes with a Sound Core Audio chip that drives a 7.1 channel, gold plated audio jack. Two LAN ports powered by the Killer E221 chip offer seamless net connectivity with Bluetooth 4.1 and Killer E1535 802.11 AC. There is a single HDMI 2.0 display connector along with a display port while other I/O includes several USB 3.1 (Type-C), USB 2.0 ports and even a PS/2 connector.
    Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming 7

The Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming 7 is a more cost effective offering of the G1 itself. It keeps the thermal armor intact but the heatsink is a little toned down with a single copper heatpipe to dissipate heat and doesn’t make use of any water cooled solution. A single 8-Pin connector powers the LGA 1151 socketed processor that is powered by a 12 Phase Digital Power Design. The motherboard has four DDR4 DIMMs that allow support for new DDR4 standard with speeds of 3400 MHz + (O.C) and capacities of 64 GB. It adopts a neat red and black color scheme which looks great and doesn’t overdo on the red color which has become the iconic color of gaming motherboards.
The motherboard has three PCI-e 3.0 x16 and three PCI-e 3.0 x1 expansion slots. Like the G1, the Gaming 7 also comes with metal shielded expansion slots which definitely give them a visual update over previous plastic builds. There are also two M.2 slots with 32 GB/s rated functionality. Storage options include eight SATA III GB/s and two SATA Express ports while USB options include two USB 3.0 internal and two USB 2.0 internal headers. A sound core 3D chip, once again provides access to a 7.1 channel gold plated audio jack. Other I/O options include the Killer E221 powered LAN ports (2x), USB 2.0, Display port, USB 3.1 (Type-C), USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and a single PS/2 port.

    Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming 5

Moving to the more budget friendly tiers of the lineup, we again see more features toned down. The GA-Z170X Gaming 5 gets rid of the fancy thermal armor but still keeps the looks and feel alive with a superb red and black color scheme with touch of white color. The socket which is powered by a 12 Phase Digital Power layout gets fed by a single 8-Pin connector. We again see four DDR4 DIMM slots, we also see three PCI-e 3.0 x16 slots with the metal shielding but get an additional PCI-e 3.0 x1 slots which make a total of 4. Also featured are the two M.2 ports while storage gets a bit toned down to get 6 SATA III 6 GB/s ports and two SATA Express 16 GB/s ports. Two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 front panel headers can be found internal while I/O on the rear includes HDMI 2.0, Display Port, Dual LAN ports, AMP-UP Audio (Core3D) powered 7.1 channel audio jack, USB 3.1/USB 3.0/USB 2.0 ports and a single PS/2 connector.
    Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming 3

The Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming 3 is the most entry level motherboard in the Gaming series with a 8 Phase Digital Power Design that powers the socket and power provided by a 8-Pin connector. The motherboard has four DDR4 DIMM slots and comes with a regular, copper based heatsink that cools off the PWM along with the PCH. Bearing the G1 Gaming logo, there’s a few features that are carried over from top-end such as the metal shielded 3x PCI-e 3.0 x16 slots, a AMP-UP Audio (Core3D) powered Audio Jack and several USB 3.1/3.0 ports. A single Killer E2221 port is featured on the motherboard. Three PCI-e 3.0 x1 slots are also found along with two M.2 ports, storage includes 6 SATA III 6 GB/s ports and two SATA Express ports. I/O includes VGA, DVI connectors, several USB 2.0/3.0 ports along with the USB 3.1 (Type-C) port and also a single PS/2 port.
    Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH

The Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH is another top level board which will be falling a tier blow the GA-Z170X-UD7 TH. The motherboard features the LGA 1151 socket, powered by a 12 Phase Digital All power design that is cooled off by a large copper heatpipe based heatsink solution that adopts a neat gold yellow and black color scheme. The same heatsink design is featured on the PCH which is found near the Dual BIOS. The four DDR4 DIMM slots can support capacities of up to 64 GB memory with speeds of up to 3400 MHz (O.C+). Expansion slots include three PCI-e 3.0 x16 and three PCI-e 3.0 x1 slots while a single PEG Power connector provides additional power to the expansion slots when running multiple graphics cards. Storage options include 6 SATA III 6 GB/s ports and three SATA Express with speeds rated at 16 GB/s. Two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports are placed internally while I/O includes a Intel GbE LAN port, a 7.1 channel audio jack along with several USB 3.0/USB 2.0 and USB 3.1 (Type-C) connectors.
    Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3

Last up, we have the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3 motherboard that is an entry tier board but not the most basic board available in Gigabyte’s portfolio. Being a basic board, this motherboard has a 12 Phase power layout that is powered by a 8-Pin connector. The whole PWM circuitry is cooled off by two set heatsinks. One of the heatsinks is also featured on the Z170 PCH. Four DDR4 DIMM slots are featured on the board which can support capacity of 64 GB of memory. Expansion slots include three PCI-e 3.0 x16 and three PCI-e 3.0 x1 slots. Storage options include 6 SATA III 6 GB/s ports and two SATA Express ports. The I/O features are limited to VGA, DVI, GbE powered ALN port, a 7.1 Channel audio jack and a mix of USB 3.1/3.0/2.0 ports. Expect availability of Gigabyte motherboards on 5th August when Skylake processors launch.

Intel Skylake and Z170 Motherboard Release Date Revealed

Some people are waiting with high anticipation for Intel to release their newest platform, Skylake, while others don’t care as much as they’ve recently upgraded to the current platform. If you are a member of the first group, then you won’t have to wait much longer as the release date for the first CPUs in the series as well as the first motherboards have been revealed.
Benchlife got the scoop and they weren’t slow to release it – meaning that we also can bring you this news. The first CPUs to be released are the Core i7-6700K and the Core i5-6600K and they will be released on August 5th and not between the 6th and 9th as previously reported.

A new CPU also needs a new motherboard to go along and we saw a lot of gorgeous ones during out visit to Computex last month. The Z170 chipset will be the new flagship and it will be released on the same day. After all, what good is a brand new CPU without a motherboard?

The i7-6700, i5-6600, and i5-6400 as well as the i7-6700T, i5-6600T, and i5-6400T processors are scheduled for a release between August 30th and September 5th. The same goes for the H170, B150, and H110 chipset based motherboards. Enterprise level Q170 and Q150 will have to wait until at least October before they get the newest technology out of the house of Intel.

We have seen several Z170 chipset motherboards at Computex from MSI, ASRock, Gigabyte, Colorful, EVGA and Biostar. The only motherboard which ASUS showcased was the Z170 Pro but today, we get to see three new motherboards. These include the ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, ASUS Z170 Deluxe and ASUS Z170 Pro Gamer. These three motherboards will be part of the initial lineup as more Z170 boards will be introduced that will include the ROG Maximus VIII Formula/Impact/Gene-Z/Ranger series and the Sabertooth Z170.
    ASUS Z170 Deluxe Motherboard

The ASUS Z170 Deluxe is going to be a flagship offering with a neat white and black color scheme which was featured on the ASUS X99 series motherboards. The ASUS Z170 Deluxe retains the design scheme with a thermal armor design that covers the I/O ports. The ASUS Z170 Deluxe features the socket LGA 1151 which supports Intel’s Skylake processors. This motherboard features a Digi+ VRM with 20 phase power design that is powered by a 8-Pin connector. The motherboard has four DDR4 DIMM slots that can support up to 64 GB of memory with speeds of 3400 MHz (O.C+).

Expansion slots include three PCI-e 3.0 x16 slots, four PCI-e 3.0 x1 slots and a single M.2 Ultra slot. For storage, ASUS has featured 8 SATA III 6 GB/s ports and a single SATA Express 16 GB/s port. There are several switches and buttons laid out on the board, we can’t tell what specific functions do they serve however, they could be used for overclocking and turning on/off the expansion slots, DIMM slots and switch between the dual BIOS on the board. There’s a single USB 3.0 header and two USB 2.0 internal headers. A large white heatsink is integrated on top of the power phases for adequate cooling that can dissipate heat through a single heatpipe that runs through the three sets while a single PCH heatsink bearing the ASUS logo keeps the Z170 chip cooled.
ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero and Z170 PRO Gamer

The ROG Maximus VIII Hero and Z170 Pro Gamer are also launching however not all exact details are know for these boards as the images are not as much detailed. The Z170 Pro Gamer has a black and red color scheme and has two large heatsinks cooling off the Digi+ VRM. The LGA 1151 socket is powered through a single 8-Pin connector while four DDR4 DIMM slots offer support of up to 64 GB ram capacity. Expansion slots include three PCI-e 3.0 x16, three PCI-e 3.0 x1 and a single M.2 Ultra slot. The ASUS Z170-Pro motherboard also adopts a similar design scheme as their X99 motherboards. The ASUS Z170-Pro is a high-end product and comes just below the ASUS Z170 Deluxe that will launch along with Skylake processors. We can see that the CPU socket is powered by a 8-Pin power connector and the board adopts a 16 Phase DIGI+ VRM design. The entire PWM section is covered by large heatsinks that are interconnected through a single heatpipe to dissipate heat effectively. Next to the CPU socket are four DDR4 DIMM slots which can support 64 GB capacity of DRAM with frequencies up to 3400 MHz (O.C+).
Expansion slots include three PCI-e 3.0 x16, four PCI-e 3.0 x1 and a single M.2 slot. Storage includes 10 SATA III and two SATA Express ports. There are a variety of switches for overclocking management on the board along with a debug LED. The Crystal Sound 2 audio chip offers high quality audio through the rear panel audio jack. Two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 internal headers provide front panel I/O support. The rear panel I/O includes dual Gigabit LAN ports, a 7.1 channel audio jack, 4 USB 3.0, 2 USB 3.1, 4 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, Display port, Mini-Display port connectors, SPDIF and a WiFi-Go module that allows wireless Wi-Fi 802.11 B/G/N connectivity.

MicroStar International this week introduced its new premium mainboard based on the Intel Z170 core-logic. The platform represents the best that the new Intel 100-series “Skylake” platform offers, including input/output capabilities. To make it more appealing for PC modders, MSI equipped its product with white heat-spreaders.
The MSI Z170 Krait features almost everything a modern gamer might need: an LGA1151 socket for Intel Core i-series “Skylake” central processing units, four 288-pin DDR4 DIMM slots for DRAM, four PCI Express x16 slots for graphics cards (two of which are covered against EMI), an M.2 connector for SSDs, a SATA Express set of connectors and so on. The mainboard features an improved 7.1-channel audio sub-system that sports circuitry that is “protected” against EMI of graphics cards and other components.

The motherboard features a digital multi-phase voltage regulator module (VRM) covered by heat-spreaders and based on solid-state chokes and capacitors. The memory sub-system relies on an advanced VRM with a solid-state inductor and multiple MOSFETs. The storage sub-system on the mainboard also features a sophisticated voltage regulator module with a solid-state choke and multiple MOSFETs.
Expect the mainboard to support MSI’s automatic overclocking technology called O.C. Genie.
The MSI Z170 Krait Gaming motherboard will be officially introduced in August. Pricing of the product depends on regions and retailers, but it is logical to expect the mainboard to cost the same amount of money as the MSI Z97 Krait – £89, €125, $130.

Asustek preps add-in-card with Thunderbolt 3/USB type-C ports

Asustek Computer is working on an add-in-card that will add Thunderbolt 3 support to its mainboards. The platform will be based on Intel Corp.’s “Alpine Ridge” controller and will significantly expand input/output capabilities of modern personal computers.
The add-in-board from Asus featuring Intel “Alpine Ridge” chip will come with one USB 3.1 type-C port, a USB 3.0 type-A port, an HDMI 2.0 and two mini DisplayPort connectors, reports BenchLife. The daughter card will be sold separately and will also be bundled with select motherboards from the company.
The card uses PCI Express 3.0 x4 interface and will not only provide Thunderbolt 3 connectivity with up to 40Gb/s bandwidth, but will also be among the fastest USB 3.1 adapters available in the market.

At present Asustek already offers USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt II add-in-cards in retail. Offering add-in adapters will not be a brand-new business for Asus.
Pricing of Asustek’s Intel “Alpine Ridge”-based card is unknown.
Gigabyte Technology plans to offer a series of Intel Z170 mainboards featuring “Alpine Ridge” that will support Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1. Due to business reasons, Asus will continue to install Asmedia’s USB 3.1 controller on its motherboards. The world’s largest maker of mainboards partly owns Asmedia.

Exclusive: EVGA Shows Off Its Z170-Series Motherboards

With the Intel 100-series motherboards and Skylake CPUs around the corner, it's tough to keep all the juicy info under wraps. Enjoy this exclusive first peek at high-res images of three EVGA Z170 boards.
We already saw EVGA's three Z170-series motherboards back at Computex, but today we bring you some more juicy details and high-resolution images. These are the Z170 Singer, the Z170 FTW and the Z170 Classified.
The first board of the lot is the Z170 Stinger, which is a mini-ITX board. You'll find an LGA1151 socket wired to two DDR4 memory slots and a single PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slot. You'll also find four SATA3 (6 Gb/s) ports, a USB 3.0 header, and two fan headers. You may not see an M.2 slot, but upon closer inspection you'll see that there actually is one above the USB 3.0 header, which is labeled "M.2" and has a screw hole near it. It should be safe to say that EVGA will include a bracket to mount M.2 SSDs here.
Up next is the mid-tier Z170 FTW, which is a fairly straightforward mid-tier Z170 ATX motherboard. The CPU socket is wired to four memory slots, along with what looks like four PCI-Express x16 slots. Don't be mistaken though, if you look closely at the text, you'll see that only the top port is wired to 16x, with the second port wired to eight lanes, the one below to only four, and the last port to just one lane.

Additionally, there are six SATA3 (6 Gb/s) ports, and a single M.2 slot. Populating the M.2 slot will disable two of the SATA ports. The board also has dedicated audio with a clear trace path to separate it, and that's pretty much where it ends.
The top-tier board is the Z170 Classified, and it's also a little bigger than most ATX boards. As the king of the hill, it comes with a handful of features to set it apart from the crowd, including a more elaborate power delivery circuit, heatsinks with a heatpipe connecting them, and a couple of invisible features.

EVGA packed the Z170 Classified with a PLX lane-multiplier chip, which has allowed the company to wire each PCI-Express slot to a minimum of eight lanes, giving the board support for four-way SLI. Of course, EVGA is using a PLX chip because Intel's mainstream CPUs do not have enough lanes for four-way SLI configurations. Therefore, performance won't be on par with Intel's enthusiast chips, which have enough lanes for native four-way SLI, but a PLX chip does allow you to install four graphics cards on Intel's mainstream platform, which is still better than nothing.
Furthermore, EVGA built USB 3.1 into the board (including a header for front USB 3.1), as well as SATA-Express, and Creative Core3D audio. There is also an M.2 one slot supporting multiple card lengths (but will disable two SATA ports when in use), and one supporting only 42 mm long cards.
Stay tuned for final specifications that will come when the boards launch.
