    Apple Car

Apple May Have the Apple Car in Production by 2020

Cars are not an easy task that can be done in hours or days without any hard work being done. It takes a long time to design and finalize a product especially when it’s a car. And also, when it’s your first time in this category of products. Dan Akerson who led the company for almost around three and a half years or so warned Apple of making cars a few weeks ago. In an interview with Bloomberg, he also figured out that making cars is a hard task to initiate.

Apple remains tight lipped as ever about a possible car

“A lot of people who don’t ever operate in it don’t understand and have a tendency to underestimate,” said Akerson, who has held no other executive positions in the automotive industry. “They’d better think carefully if they want to get into the hard-core manufacturing,” he said of Apple. “We take steel, raw steel, and turn it into car. They have no idea what they’re getting into if they get into that.”
That’s highlighted today more in a new report by Bloomberg which states that Apple might be considering to have its “supposedly rumored” car as early as possible or more appropriately by 2020. According to what is said in the Bloomberg report:
“Apple would have some advantages as a new entrant to the auto industry,” including its cash, ability to connect with its own devices and the infancy of the electric-vehicle market, Barclays analysts Ben Reitzes and Brian Johnson wrote in a note to investors. “Finally, Apple’s brand – arguably the most important advantage – is a big attraction for the next generation of car customers.”
According to some recent rumors the company had some research on vehicle’s development in the previous year, which allowed Apple’s team to know that they can sort out everything within a matter of five to six years in totality. This is exactly the same strategy Apple used before announcing its first iPhone in 2007. They started off R&D on an iPhone three years prior to the release of an iPhone in 2007. However very less information and specs are still available to attention about the new anticipated vehicle by Apple. And its completely possible that Apple is still in the process of finalizing what exactly to present in a shape of a vehicle to the much curios audience.
According to the Wall Street Journal report, the design in progress seems to be like a minivan, which it suggests as an odd choice when it comes to Apple’s first release of a car ever. The car also appears to be fully electric since an enormous amount of recent hires from EV battery maker A123 Systems provides us with a very significant reason to believe that this car in production is going to be fully electric.
“If Apple really is snapping up A123’s employees then it’s a clear indication that the company is exploring the idea of building an electric car. A123’s technology hasn’t really been used in anything but electric vehicles, and the fact that it had to shut down unfinished projects because of the loss of its employees suggests the calibre of engineering talent involved. If the five individuals did jump ship to Apple to build an electric car then they’d be joining a team that reportedly already includes automation experts abd top car designers”.
Reuters and WSJ reports strictly has a conflict on how much autonomous Apple’s car is going to be when it will be released. Its still worthy to notice that the year 2020 is subject to be anticipated as the year when autonomous cars are going to be released and commercialized.

Tim Cook Praises Snowden, Responds to Questions About Apple Car

In case you hadn’t noticed, Apple’s Tim Cook has been on a global tour recently, visiting many places in Europe, including Germany and the UK, as well as other countries such as Israel. In Germany, he sat down to talk with BILD, one of the country’s biggest newspapers. In that interview, cook made some interesting remarks on a variety of issues, most intriguing were about Edward Snowden and also those rumours about an Apple car!
As for Snowden, Cook effectively praised the former NSA contractor, who in 2013 leaked thousands of classified documents revealing details about the US government’s spying programme. Cook, who is frequently heard talking about privacy issues, likened Snowden’s efforts to Apple’s values.
“If Snowden did anything for us at all, then it was to get us to talk more about these things. [Apple’s] values have always been the same.”
It really is quite significant that the CEO of the world’s largest company has praised a man some call a traitor. Snowden is a fugitive in the eyes of the US, and for Cook to associate his company with him like that is a big deal.
Beyond privacy, Cook was also pressed on future products, namely an Apple car. Recently we’ve seen a flurry of rumours suggesting that the company is hard at work producing a vehicle. The Wall Street Journal published extensive details, saying that there is a ‘Project Titan’ underway at Apple, with at least 1,000 employees working on it.
“We are still secretive about our coming products. So if you ask me what we are working on I’m not going to answer this question.” Asked about the Apple car, he replied simply: “I have read the rumours. I can’t comment on it.”
Ahh, not exactly a revelation, but interesting that he didn’t outright deny such a project. If a car was completely out of the question, Cook may well have laughed it off.

German outfit signs up for non-existent Apple car

    Hype now officially silly
The hype around Apple's nonexistent driverless car has reached a point where a German company has even offered to help Jobs' Mob build it.

Chief Executive Elmar Degenhart said Germany's Continental AG would be interested in acting as partner for technology giant Apple should the U.S. company decide to build a car,. "Apple has an excellent reputation on information and communication systems and has incredible financial strength," the CEO said on Thursday during an earnings call.
"We would be interested" in acting as partner if Apple decides to produce a vehicle, he said.
However Degenhart was skeptical on prospects for battery-powered cars, saying Continental's electric-car operations may fail to make money "at least in the next 3-4 years."
So in other words we would like to build a car for Apple, but we don't think it will make much dosh. We should point out that so far no one sensible has said that Apple is making a driverless car. It is all based on speculation which followed a case where Apple was sued by a battery company.

Analysts believe Apple has logical reasons to join vehicle market

Apple's decision to reportedly work on a vehicle makes sense, as the Silicon Valley company looks to jump into a market that has more than $1 trillion in yearly sales, according to Sanford C. Bernstein analysts.

In their "5 Reasons Why We Believe Apple May Indeed Be Looking to Build a Car," analysts Toni Sacconaghi and Max Warburton also noted that Apple isn't afraid to enter an established market - and can rely on its established business ties in China to help foster possible car manufacturing capabilities.

In addition, Apple has a large amount of financial resources it can invest, and even with a high luxury price tag, the auto industry is expected to see luxury models increase sales in upcoming years.

"Are we convinced Apple is making a car? No," said the Bernstein analysts, in a statement published by USA Today Money. However, "We are more optimistic about the possibility of a car than we were initially."

New Lawsuit Hints at Apple Trying to Get Into the Auto Industry

There have been rumours that Apple is thinking about taking a bite out of the auto industry soon. A newly filed lawsuit might confirm Apple’s intention, having A123 Systems, the company that makes car batteries for the big name auto makers, sue the Cupertino giant for trying to steal their employees.
Analysts in the industry have discussed what Apple might have in the works and the lawsuit now slowly confirms their findings. Apple has made $13 billion and $18 billion in the last two quarters and that’s about the sum spent by all automakers combines for four months of research and development.
However, the analysts state that electric cars are too expensive for just one owner. This means that we might be looking at a future where electric autonomous cars are shared between people and come at a monthly subscription, kind of like Uber if you think about it. This will drop the cost of charging the cars and having them running around 24h a day. If you think about it, it’s not all that bad. We might even cut down on parking space problems in highly dense populated areas for instance.
All in all, if the above tends to be more cost efficient, this means Tesla Motors should start changing its business plan too. Though Tesla does offer a lot of classy electric cars for owners using the same model as traditional car dealerships, the cost for maintaining and charging such a model still proves a big drawback for it to reach a wide consumer market. But are shared electric autonomous vehicles really the future?

Apple Hiring Automobile Experts, Most Likely For Its Rumored ‘Titan’ Car Project

While its dominance in smartphones (and to some, extent wearables) has reached a new level, Curpertino tech giant Apple does not want to stop there. In an attempt to branch out to the automotive industry, the company has started hiring automobile experts, hinting that the firm maintains its research and implementation work on an electric car.

Apple Has Hired Senior Vice President Of Chrysler Group, Which Will Certainly Deliver A Boost In Research Progress

According to the latest report hailing from The Wall Street Journal, Apple has hired Doug Betts, who previously served as the Senior Vice President of the Chrysler Group, and at that point, his responsibilities was being the global head of operations leading product service and quality. According to his LinkedIn page (image present below), he was employed at Apple during the month of July. Apart from a role in Operations, where he is currently situated in the San Francisco Bay Area, there are no additional details as to what he is doing at the company.
Before working at Chrysler, Betts was employed at Nissan, Toyota, and Michelin, indicating that Apple certainly did its homework before choosing which individual to hire. In addition to recruiting Betts, the source states that Apple recently recruited a researcher by the name of Paul Furgale. Furgale possesses a specialization in autonomous vehicles, and has been hired by the company, along with his team in order to research on Apple’s car project, which is being referred to as Titan.

The tech company is also looking to seek out experts with robotics and machine experience, while Furgale is immersed in recruiting both students and researchers. Details of Titan were leaked in February, and apart from the fact that the vehicle could come in by 2020, project details remain scarce.
Right now, the only information that we know of is that Apple is on a recruiting rampage, hiring the best of the best from companies like Tesla, Ford, and GM and giving them offers that they literally cannot refuse (like attractive salary packages and perks). At this point, we have no more details to provide, but we will be keeping you in the loop so stay tuned for more details.

Could the Apple Car Be Inspired by the BMW i3?

Rumors state that Apple wants to establish a presence on the driverless smart car market by 2020. Consequently, the company probably has a sizeable team working on its upcoming Apple Car, including Chrysler’s own Doug Betts, who was hired not too long ago. However, Apple was initially looking to partner up with BMW in order to manufacture the Apple Car following the design of the i3 electric car. Even though initial negotiations have failed, Apple’s Tim Cook visited the German automaker’s factory in Leipzig and was reportedly “impressed” with the carbon fiber electric-powered i3.
According to BMW’s chief production officer, Oliver Zipse, the company is keeping an open line of communication with the world’s most important tech companies, and it is still open to collaboration with Apple. Even if Apple’s experts eventually decide to give up on the i3 as a base for their own car, their initial interest still gives us a pretty good idea of the kind of concept that they are looking for. So judging by what we’ve seen so far, the Apple Car will probably be a compact, electric-powered vehicle that could include a specially designed Apple OS. Some of the most impressive features of the BMW i3 include rear suicide doors and the ability to slow down by using kinetic energy stored in the wheels.
Thank you TechSpot for providing us with this information.

BMW And Apple Reportedly In Talks To Develop Future Electric Vehicles

Apple might be the richest company on the planet, but it's not about to slow down on its quest for total market domination. It's constantly looking at new avenues to get into, and as we've been hearing about for a while, autos is one of them. It's hard at this point to picture a vehicle sharing the same badging as an iPhone, but as time passes, it begins to look more and more likely.
In a recent report, it was revealed that Apple, including CEO Tim Cook, paid a visit to BMW at its Leipzig factory. The intent was to have modest discussions about what could be possible, but nothing was agreed-upon there. One source claims that talks could continue again in the near-future.
This is a bit of a complicated business for either Apple or BMW to get into - both specialize in different products, and both could use the help of the other to achieve their own goals easier. It's for this reason why it's being questioned whether Apple is working with BMW in any measure to gain an understanding of how it'd manufacture its own vehicles without the Bavarian company's help. Similarities are drawn to Steve Jobs' visit to Xerox in 1979. Five-years later, Apple announced its first Macintosh.
One thing's for certain: it's not easy for a vehicle maker to succeed on the mobile front's a company like Apple has, and the vice versa is true. Apple might have a lot of experience in the computer market, but that means little when it comes to producing a vehicle.
But, it's Apple we're talking about here, and if it does end up releasing its own vehicle (or vehicles), an immense about of effort and study is going to be put behind it.

Self-Driving Apple Car Is Real, Confirm Documents

It’s been rumored for quite a while that Apple is building its very own self-driving car, but according to documents obtained by The Guardian, more weight has been added to that revelation.

Earlier this year, we heard several reports that Apple is working on a self-driving car, with the company aiming to mass produce the vehicle in 2020. More fuel was added to the speculation as we learned that Apple has snagged up a mapping startup called Coherent Navigation. Now, a new report has surfaced which solidly claims that Apple’s car plans are indeed real and it would be a self-driving affair.
According to The Guardian, Apple is developing its self-driving car in Silicon Valley, and is currently looking to test the vehicle in the Bay Area. Of course, Apple is not going to test out the vehicle in open space for everyone to spot, hence it is hoping to find a secure location for testing purposes.
According to the report, Apple’s secret car project, dubbed as Project Titan, might see itself being tested at an old naval base located in San Francisco:

In May, engineers from Apple’s secretive Special Project group met with officials from GoMentum Station, a 2,100-acre former naval base near San Francisco that is being turned into a high-security testing ground for autonomous vehicles.
Interestingly, when inquired with Apple if this is indeed true, the company declined to comment on the matter. And of course, why wouldn’t it? The company will never let out something so secret this early. But judging by how things are leaked out of factories these days (hint: iPhone 6s) it would only be a matter of weeks or months till we hear more about it.
How things stand currently, Google is at the forefront when it comes to testing out self-driving cars, with their vehicles being spot on when it comes to navigating through public roads. Of course, driverless vehicles are the way of the future, but there are a lot of complications one has to ponder upon before the four-wheeler is let loose for all to ride in. For example, who is responsible if a self-driving car hits someone on the road or bumps into a street lamp? Such things pile up in weights of up to a few tons, and we’re sure that all of us are years away from seeing autonomous vehicles wandering around our roads.
What do you think? Do you believe Apple’s plan for a self-driving car is real? Let us know in the comments section below.

Apple Might Be Designing Smart Windshields for Self-Driving Cars

Some of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers, including BMW, Hyundai and Volvo have already revealed that they are working on smart windshields that can provide important notifications and various multimedia controls for drivers. It looks like Apple might also be working on a smart windshield, albeit for self-driving cars, which could be related to its mysterious Project Titan. Project Titan is rumored to be an impressive undertaking that engages hundreds of Apple workers, as it involves building a self-driving minivan. The rumors are backed by the several sightings of camera-mounted Apple vans that were driving across California not too long ago.
Should it be installed in self-driving vehicles, the HUD could provide important information regarding navigation, road conditions and potential hazards, not to mention the plethora of entertainment-related applications. A research firm has reported that Apple is “very likely” to develop a 27 to 50-inch display that could project clear icons onto a car’s curved glass windshield. This is not the first time that the tech giant is working on a secret and innovative project, but we’ll just have to wait and see what actually becomes of Project Titan. Below you will find a video of the already functional Jaguar-Land Rover head-up display system.

Apple Is Now Hiring Experts To Work On ‘Secret Projects,’ Likely Its Autonomous Car

A few days back, we caught wind of news that Apple is moving ahead with its autonomous electric car plans, after it was revealed that the Cupertino giant was looking for a place to test out its vehicle in the Bay Area. Now, a new report has surfaced, stating that Apple has hired an engineer from Tesla Motors to work on ‘Secret Projects,’ along with a few other experts from the industry.

The new comes in from Reuters, and they are reporting that:
Consumer electronics company Apple Inc (AAPL.O) has hired a senior engineer from electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA.O), according to a LinkedIn posting, as part of Apple’s effort to build a team of experts in automated driving.
This hiring suggests that Apple is indeed serious about its car related plans and is ready to take Google head-on in this department. The engineer, which Apple has now hired from Tesla Motors, named Jamie Carlson, worked on autonomous firmware for the company, and it’s highly likely that he would be carrying out the same kind of work on Apple’s end. The interesting thing to note here is that the engineer Apple has hired is working on ‘Secret Projects’ at Cupertino, according to his LinkedIn profile page, hence adding more fuel to the already ablaze fire.
Apart from Carlson, Reuters points out that Apple has made similar hirings as well:

Since January, Apple has hired Megan McClain, a former Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) engineer with expertise in automated driving, and Vinay Palakkode, a graduate researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, a hub of automated driving research.
In August, Apple hired Xianqiao Tong, an engineer who developed computer vision software for driver assistance systems at microchip maker Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O).
Given how things stand, it’s very much unclear what Apple’s vehicle would look like, other than the fact that it’s going to be electric and will be an autonomous affair. Apart from that bit of information, nothing is known, other than the fact that Apple is ready to field test the vehicle in the Bay Area, as we have mentioned already. It’s also likely that Apple will use disguised vehicles serving as testbeds, making the car’s presence as stealth / minimal as possible, so that it does not come into the public’s eye.
Whatever the case might be, we’re sure more news will pop up regarding this development, so stay tuned for more.

    Is Apple Planning An iCar?

Tech companies used to be very much specialized to their own field, from the standard PCs and Software to advanced medical equipment. Over the last few years, these same companies are now beginning to challenge the established status quo of many other industries, such as the automotive industry. The rumours of Apple designing a vehicle have become stronger after hiring a senior engineer from electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc
Apple have been looking to build a team of automotive design experts with the aim of producing a car for market and now James Carlson has been appointed after leaving Tesla. How do we know of these secret plans? He placed his new job on his LinkedIn or course, this is along with at least 6 others which have experience developing self-driving technology and systems which have also advertised their new position in the same way.
Sources for Reuters have also stated that Apple are actively developing a car and studying self-driving technology, but it is yet unclear if the iPhone maker is designing a vehicle that could drive itself.
When you view the hirings which Apple have made, it is clear the plans are very much in motion, below is a list of recent appointments along with each individual’s previous jobs.

    • Megan McClain – A former Volkswagen AG Engineer
    • Vinay Palakkode – Graduate researcher at Carnegie Mellon University specializing in automated driving research
    • Xianqiao Tong – Engineer who developed computer vision software for driver assistance systems at microchip maker Nvidia Corp
    • Paul Furgale – Former deputy director of the Autonomous Systems Lab at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology

Other Apple appointments since September 2014 with similar experience have worked at automakers BMW, Volkswagen and Ford Motor Co, automotive suppliers Delphi Automotive and Robert Bosch GmbH.
One thing is clear, Apple looks almost certain to be developing an automotive vehicle in some capacity with the aim of competing with similar manufacturers. The tech giant would have an excellent chance of succeeding considering the wealth and investment which has underpinned its performance in the last decade.

Tim Cook Stokes Apple Car Rumors, Says 'Massive Change' Coming To Auto Industry

Despite the fact that Apple has never been explicit about its desire to create an electric vehicle, it's hard to imagine at this point that it won't happen. Even Tesla's Elon Musk has weighed in on things, going on record to say that the Cupertino's EV team is like "Tesla's graveyard" - a statement he later went on to quell a little bit.
Back in August, it leaked out that Apple's Tim Cook had paid a visit to BMW's Leipzig factory to gauge and discuss things. Ultimately, it's not clear if BMW is going to have anything to do with Apple's foray into vehicle making, but it no doubt gave Apple a boost to get a sneak peak into what to expect.
Well, he might still be keeping mum on things, but at Wall Street Journal's WSJDLive conference, Cook had some interesting things to say. Such as the fact that the auto industry is in need of a "massive change", not just an "evolutionary one".

Cook does admit that he'd like to be able to provide people the "iPhone experience in the car", which is something possible to an extent with the company's CarPlay system. He no doubt would like to take things even further, though, and would be able to if Apple was the one designing the entire vehicle.
It's interesting, though, that while Cook, and Apple as a whole, would want to bling out its vehicle with the latest technologies, reports back in August highlighted the fact that most people simply don't care about most of the technologies that come with their "connected" vehicles. In fact, many consider them to be a waste of money, both for the consumer, and vendor alike.
None of that counts autonomous driving, which seems like a technology that many wouldn't mind having. Given that Apple's first car is is expected to launch in 2019, it could be that the company will offer autonomous driving from the get-go. Then, people would actually be able to play with the various gadgets in their car, since they don't need to worry about that whole "driving" thing.
Anyone want to place any bets on when Apple will finally stop beating around the bush and announce its EV?

Tim Cook Punts On Apple Car Rumors, Doubles Down On Customer Privacy In 60 Minutes Profile

In a brand-new interview with CBS' 60 Minutes, Apple CEO Tim Cook doles out his thoughts on a huge number of different topics. Unfortunately, though, there really isn't that much new that's been revealed -- especially if you keep up on Apple's every move. Nonetheless, there are some snippets worth highlighting.
It feels like we've been talking about the elusive Apple car forever, and still, the company remains mum on the topic. This is despite the fact that we know that the company's been poaching top engineers from other car companies (like Tesla), that Tim Cook paid a visit to BMW's Leipzig factory, and that the company is apparently due to begin road testing testing soon. Capping it all off, Cook back in October said that the auto industry will soon experience a "massive change". Subtle!
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...t/Tim_Cook.jpg
During his 60 Minutes interview, Cook laughed at the question, "How hard is it to say Apple will be in the car business?" When prodded further, Cook quips, "One of the great things about Apple is [we] probably have more secrecy here than the CIA."
You've got to appreciate Apple sticking to its guns here, even though it seems extremely obvious that the company is in fact bound to make an announcement in the not-so-distant future.
A good portion of the interview focused on one of the hottest topics of the day: security, and privacy. Cook's quick to jump to his thoughts on things, saying: "Here's the situation is on your smartphone today, on your iPhone, there's likely health information, there's financial information. There are intimate conversations with your family, or your co-workers. There's probably business secrets and you should have the ability to protect it. And the only way we know how to do that, is to encrypt it."
But what about a "back door"? Cook once again hits the nail right on the head: "There have been people that suggest that we should have a back door. But the reality is if you put a back door in, that back door's for everybody, for good guys and bad guys."
Someone needs to get Hillary Clinton to watch this interview.

Apple Registers 'Apple.car' and Other Auto-Related Domains

Apple is adding to the speculation about the company's plans to get into the auto business by registering a handful of auto-related domain names. I love Apple car rumors like this because they give me the opportunity to post this picture again:

Apple has registered a trio of auto-related top-level domain names, including apple.car, apple.cars and apple.auto. Whois records updated on January 8 show that Apple registered the domains through sponsoring registrar MarkMonitor Inc. in December 2015, although the addresses are not yet active.

Elon Musk says Apple's electric car is an "open secret" that he welcomes

Rumors that Apple is developing an electric car have been circulating for quite some time now, but so far the company hasn’t commented on it. But one person who thinks it’s pretty obvious that the Cupertino firm is working on the project is Tesla’s Elon Musk, who said it was an “open secret” that Apple is making a rival electric vehicle.
In an interview with the BBC, Musk highlighted the enormous number of people that Apple has hired from the automotive industry over the past 12 months as evidence. "Well, it's pretty hard to hide something if you hire over a thousand engineers to do it," he said. "This is an open secret.”
Rather than seeing Apple’s electric – and possibly self-driving – car as a threat to Tesla’s range of vehicles, Musk said he welcomed any company’s participation in the electric vehicle industry, but warned that it was “quite hard to do.”
“Tesla will still aspire to make the most compelling electric vehicles, and that would be our goal, while at the same time helping other companies to make electric cars as well.”
Musk spoke of his vision of a future where driving yourself would become a hobby rather than a necessity as all cars would be electric and self-driving. “In the long term, nobody will buy a car unless it is autonomous. You will only drive if you want to drive,” the tech entrepreneur said. He added that cars that could not drive themselves would become a "strange anachronism" before too long.
Musk hasn’t always been so civil when talking about Apple; in October last year, he jokingly called the iPhone maker “Tesla graveyard,” referencing the number of fired Tesla employees Apple has hired.
More possible evidence that Apple is working on a vehicle – allegedly codenamed Project Titan - emerged last week when the company registered a trio of automobile-related domain names, including apple.car and apple.auto.
