Apple Unveils New MacBook, Offers Intel Core M, USB Type-C

Apple Unveils New MacBook, Offers Intel Core M, USB Type-C

At today's Apple Event, the next generation of MacBooks was unveiled. But instead of adding to the MacBook Pro or Air family, the company went back to just "MacBook" for its rebooted lineup. As always, Apple wants to keep its laptops as thin as possible while still keeping them as powerful as possible, and the new MacBooks reflect that goal.

The MacBook is thinner and lighter than the MacBook Air, measuring 13.1 mm at its thickest point and weighing only two pounds. It has a 12-inch display with a thickness of 0.88 mm, and it features a resolution of 2304 x 1440. The keyboard received an internal upgrade in terms of more stable keycaps and individual LED backlighting for each key.

Users can now click anywhere on the new trackpad and adjust it to suit their clicking needs, and it also includes tactile feedback. A new gesture called "Force Click" has been added, too, which provides a shortcut to, for example, opening up the Maps app, creating a new event in the calendar, or looking at a preview of a file.

The MacBook sticks to Apple's unibody exterior and features a USB Type-C connector for power. (Did you catch that? The power jack is a USB Type-C port.) Thus, that one port will not only support power, but also USB 3.1, mini DisplayPort, VGA and HDMI. The smaller interior features a new logic board, which for its basic SKU includes an Intel Core M processor (up to 1.3 GHz, 2.9 GHz Turbo), Intel HD Graphics 5300, 8 GB of 1600 MHz LPDDR3 memory, and a PCIe-based 256 GB SSD.
For the first time in the company's laptop history the new MacBooks will be fanless. All the space left in the interior is saved for batteries, which Apple says provides all-day battery life.
Other features include a 480p FaceTime camera, stereo speakers, dual mics and a headphone jack.

So how much will this cost you? The basic package starts at $1,299, but you can upgrade the Core M processor and bump the SSD up to 512 GB, which puts the next-up model at $1,599. It comes in gold, silver and space gray and will be available on April 10.
With the new MacBooks, Apple continues to keep its head in the laptop game. The features certainly are impressive, but those who are on a budget might be hesitant to buy one. Nevertheless, it's a new contender in the market, and we'll see how it stacks up in performance against the competition.[/QUOTE]

These are the expensive adapters you need for the new single-port MacBook

Yesterday, Apple announced the new MacBook, with a 12-inch Retina display and a body so thin it can only accommodate a single USB Type-C connector alongside a 3.5mm audio jack. That's it: the single USB connector is used for both charging and data throughput.
As there is only one main port on the new MacBook, you're probably going to need an arsenal of adapters to connect up your peripherals, displays and more. Apple's got you covered in this department, offering a range of rather expensive adapters to bring back the ports from their older laptops.

The first adapter is basic, going from USB Type-C to standard USB in a $19 cable. If you want to use more than one device at a time, you'll need one of Apple's Multiport Adapters, which retail for $79 each. One of these adapters features a single USB port, HDMI, and USB Type-C for charging, while a variant swaps out HDMI for VGA.
If you want to attach more than one USB device, or plug in an SD card, or attach a Thunderbolt device, you'll need to purchase another adapter from a third party. If you want to charge the new MacBook while pushing video out to a display, you'll need to fork out the $79 for the Multiport Adapter until a non-official alternative appears.
To many people, having to carry around a selection of adapters on the off-chance you'll need to plug something in is pretty inconvenient. To others, the super-slim 13.1mm body of the MacBook is worth the trade-off in connectivity.

LaCie Launches ‘Porsche Design’ Portable Hard Drive To Fill New MacBook’s Solitary USB-C Port

Apple announced its uber-thin MacBook yesterday to much fanfare. The device measures just 13.1mm at its thickest point and tips that scales at drool-worthy two pounds. Apple even managed to throw in a Retina display, “all-day battery life,” and Intel’s power efficient Core M processor that doesn’t require a fan.

But in Apple’s never-ending quest to make all of its devices as thin as possible, it gave up all traditional ports including Thunderbolt 2, USB 3.0, and HDMI — it even had to forgo the SD slot. In its place is a solitary USB-C type connector. And wouldn’t you know it, just a day after the new MacBook announcement, Seagate and LaCie have stepped in with the first device that will fill that USB-C port: the LaCie “Porsche Design” Mobile Drive.

The LaCie Mobile Drive has been redesigned to incorporate a USB-C port on the drive itself. In addition, both ends of the included cable features a USB-C connection so it doesn’t matter which end plugs into the drive (or your MacBook) and given the reversible nature of the USB-C port, you also don’t have to worry about inserting the cable upside down. For those that would still like to use the LaCie Mobile drive with a device other than a MacBook, a second cable with a USB-C connector on one end and a full-size USB 3.0 connector on the other end will also be included in the box.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that this new storage solution features a pass-through for power to the notebook, which could be a problem for mobile users low on juice. If you recall, the MacBook’s single USB-C connector is not only used for attaching peripherals; it’s also used for recharging the device. The only way that a MacBook owner would be able to charge their notebook and use the LaCie Mobile Drive at the same time would be to buy a $79 “Multi-port” adapter from Apple, and use LaCie’s USB-C to USB 3.0 connector — talk about a mess a cords and adapters!

The LaCie Mobile drive will be available in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities, and should launch in time for the MacBook’s April 10 launch date. Unfortunately, pricing is not available at this time.

Metadot's Das Keyboard 4 Professional For Mac Features Greetech Switches

Metadot doesn't want to leave Mac users behind when it comes to mechanical keyboards, so the Austin, Texas-based company has created a Mac version of the high-end Das Keyboard 4 Professional.

For the most part, the Mac and Windows versions are identical. Both include the media controls along with the volume knob, there are still two USB 3.0 slots located on the top end of the keyboard, and both have that long 6.5-foot USB cable. The NKRO feature via USB is included, and even the riser, which doubles as a ruler, made a comeback.

So what's new in the Mac version? For one, a few Mac-specific keys replaced some of the original keys such as Command, Alt/Option, and Fn. The Print Screen, Scroll Lock, and Pause keys are also replaced with the F13 and the brightness level keys. Finally, the Insert button has been removed to make space for the Eject key, and the Num Lock key was replaced with the Clear key.

Another big change from the PC version is the key switches. Both include gold-plated contacts, but the Windows version uses Cherry MX Brown and Blue switches while the Mac version utilizes Greetech Brown and Blue switches, just like the 4C model. It's still unclear as to why Metadot chose Greetech over Cherry; the company won't comment on the issue.

The Keyboard 4 Professional for Mac is available today and will cost you a hefty $175. If you really don't care about the Mac-specific keys and prefer the Cherry switches, you can still use the Windows version on a Mac and pay the slighter lower price of $169. Users might be a bit skeptical of the Greetech switches, but until we get our hands on two keyboards that feature both switches and do some testing, we don't have much advice to share on which switches are better.

Apple’s New Macbook Trackpad Does Not ‘Click’

Everyone knows that the MacBook’s left and right bottom corner, just like on any other laptop trackpad, are physical buttons which the user can press and get the desired click. However, they seem to be missing from Apple’s latest MacBook.
The new MacBook seems to have a unique trackpad which does not ‘move’ at all. When a user ‘clicks’ it, the click is not actually a physical click, but it does generate a click sound and feels just like a normal click. A force feedback, also known as haptic, feature is providing the user with an effect similar to a normal physical click.
It is said that the tech relies on late force fields (LFF), which can cause humans to experience vibrations as haptic ‘textures’ that gives you the impression of a clickable surface and depth. The Force Touch feature of the new trackpad is said to increase its effect based on the depth of a users press.
There are no known differences between the traditional and this more modern type of ‘click’. However, people with carpal tunnel syndrome can benefit from the LFF technology. Apple is said to be looking into integrating the LFF into future iPhones as well.
Thank you TechCrunch for providing us with this information

What Was Apple Thinking? The New MacBook Is All About That One Port (Op Ed)

This week, Apple announced its striking new MacBook. It's an achingly slim, beautiful device with a very serious I/O port problem. The thing has a headphone jack and one USB Type-C port. And that's it.
Setting aside any discussion about possible performance of the Core M chip inside, that impressive-sounding Force Touch touchpad, the 256 GB SSD, the fanless design, and the high-res 2304 x 1440 display, make no mistake that this device is all about that one Type-C port.
What was Apple thinking? Because that port doubles as a charging port, you can't have the MacBook plugged in to the wall if you want to physically connect any peripherals. That includes external displays, external storage, a mouse, and so on. There's no card slot, so you can't easily pop in an SD card full of photos and video to edit or upload. And so on and so forth.
    It's a severely limiting factor.
    Some Method To The Madness

There is a bit of method to the madness. The USB 3.1 spec is loaded with powerful enhancements, and the associated USB Type-C connector allows them all to happen.
For example, the Power Delivery portion of the spec (USB-PD) allows two devices connected by a cable to negotiate power delivery, so one device could charge the other. For example, if the MacBook was connected to an external monitor that also supported USB-PD, the monitor could actually charge the MacBook while it's connected. (Which is brilliant.)
This is in stark contrast to existing scenarios, where if you connected a laptop to an external display without plugging the laptop's power adapter into the wall, that thirsty monitor would bleed the battery dry in no time.
USB Type-C ConnectorIn terms of additional connectivity, there's a great deal you can do with wireless technologies. For instance, even if that one USB Type-C port is occupied by the power cable, and thus you can't physically connect a mouse to the MacBook, the laptop's wireless Bluetooth capabilities come into play. You just need a capable Bluetooth mouse, and you're all set.
In the same scenario, although you can't physically connect an external storage device while the MacBook is plugged in, you can always rely on networked storage, whether at work or at home. Arguably, that's a more powerful and versatile storage solution that carrying around a flash drive or external USB hard drive anyway.
Let's even consider use cases such as a camera; no, you can't pop in your SD card, but many cameras these days have wireless capabilities built in, so you should be able to transfer your files with no physical connection.
Plus, Apple has you covered with many (mostly proprietary) wireless technologies. You can use its AirDrop feature to wirelessly share your data between other Mac and iOS devices; enjoy audio with your Bluetooth headphones or speakers; stream audio, photos and video to your TV, or mirror your MacBook display on your TV with AirPlay; print wirelessly to an AirPrint-enabled printer; and back up your data wirelessly with Time Machine.
I'm sure those are the conversations the Apple folks had around their conference tables as they were nailing down what features they wanted to include in this beautiful new machine. So before we raise the pitchforks and torches, let's take a moment to consider the reality that there's a lot this MacBook can do with just that one port.
(Did everyone get a chance to reflect? Great. That moment is now over.)
    Misguided Chutzpah

Although Apple has and continues to make some terrific products, one criticism of the company that can hardly be debated is its arrogance. Never was that more on display than the infamous "magical and revolutionary" nonsense that Steve Jobs and Jony Ive were spouting around the launch of the original iPad.

With the new MacBook, Apple has fallen victim to its own hubris.

Having two USB Type-C ports would have been edgy; bold; brave; creative; challenging; industry-leading. With just one, Apple comes off as either clueless or arrogant, and it's hamstrung the device.
Ironically, considering the use cases outlined above, the MacBook is really for power users -- people who have the latest tech (eg, a monitor with USB-PD), or who have gone to the trouble of setting up networked storage. But chances are, most of the folks purchasing a MacBook will be college students and average users who won't necessarily be equipped to work around the MacBook's portlessness.
Further, all those nifty wireless capabilities require, for the most part, other Apple products. You need other Apple devices for AirDrop to work. You need an Apple TV (2nd generation or later) to use AirPlay. Wireless printing requires AirPrint capabilities. And so on.
Apple assumes that your family, friends and colleagues all exclusively use (or should use) Apple products. It has taken exceptionalism to the extreme.

    Selling Dongles

It gets worse. There are not that many devices and systems available that offer the Type-C connector just yet. Although I believe that the industry as a whole needs to get cracking on that issue as quickly as possible and stop waiting around for others to make the first move, the fact remains that you'll be hard-pressed to find very many things to stick your USB Type-C cable into.
Apple's solution to this issue is dongles. Apple refers to them as "USB-C" adapters, and there's one for charging (a 2-meter cable for $29) that goes with a power adapter (29 W, $49). It appears that these two are included with the purchase of the MacBook.

You can also spring for a simple USB Type-C to USB Type-A adapter ($19) for your basic USB needs. There's also a "USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter" for $79 that offers a VGA adapter, USB Type-A port, and a USB Type-C port, as well as a "USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter" that is also $79 and offers the same Type-C and Type-A ports but trades the VGA port for HDMI.
It's good that those adapters are available, but it's terrible design (you want a port hub sticking out awkwardly from your pretty, svelte laptop all the time?), and it's expensive.
Leaving the debate about the (perceived or real) Apple tax alone for now, $1,299 is a lot of money to spend on a laptop, and that's just the base price. But because Apple had a grandiose vision of the I/O, you have to spend another $100 on ugly dongles?
A much more elegant solution would have been for Apple to simply put a couple of those ports on the MacBook itself.
I assume all the wonderful things Apple said about its new MacBook are true, but it doesn't matter, because the device is woefully handicapped by the company's strange and ill-advised decisions regarding I/O ports.
Apple no doubt relished the fact that those design decisions would be controversial (and indeed, here you and I are, writing and reading about it, respectively), but to me there's little to debate. Apple screwed this one up.

MacBook Versus Surface Pro 3 – A Comparison

It was just a matter of time when Apple introduced it’s heir to the MacBook throne in terms of looks and portability. It seems that competition overheated between Apple and its nemesis, Microsoft. Last year. Microsoft introduced its Surface Pro 3 which proved to be a thin, portable machine which had all aspects to show off. Since the introduction of MacBook Air, it seems Apple wasn’t satisfied with thinness and portability. Hence, Apple launched another sophisticated beast to tackle any possible competition that might arise. Microsoft with its Surface Pro 3 on the other hand did not rest to down show the MacBook Air and iPad in many of its promotional advertising.

On a different perspective, Microsoft seemed to look for a challenge which Apple gracefully accepted and hence came the 12-Inch MacBook Retina. The MacBook is an innovative product with forward thinking that fits perfectly in Apple’s ecosystem. Apple deems to create products that are moving closer to the mobile industry and productivity. To stack these two high end notebooks together, here is a direct comparison of the MacBook and Surface Pro 3.
A Different Methodology, MacBook and Surface Pro 3

When talking about the Surface Pro 3, its design has always been distinct and appealing to many customers who might look at it for the first time. This was a huge launch which dug the ground for Microsoft’s image.

The surface Pro 3 is a multi-gadget, combining the characteristics of a full fledged notebook but packed in a tablet. This 2 in 1 approach held Microsoft for a long while. The high end feel of this tablet is all thanks to the tapered edges painted in silver. This display was one of the best in market and still passes the number over many of other tablets and laptops. The high definition 12-Inch display with a resolution of 2160 by 1440 has sharp color reproduction and marks its way to being the perfect device for media consumption and other uses. Surface Pro 3 is has dual speakers with a touch sensitive Windows soft key laying perfectly symmetrical. Since it runs Windows and built on laptop architecture, it has vents to breathe to cool down the system. Even the base line model has powerful internal specification for a tablet, a core i3 Processor, 64 GB of storage capacity and 4GB of RAM. All this for a mere $799.

Microsoft has turned the Surface Pro 3 to the best notebook running Windows by accessorizing it. You can always use a drawing stylus with keyboard and a kickstand to give it more like a notebook like feel. Apple on the other hand has crossed all boundaries with a notebook so thin that it almost feels unreal. The MacBook is not a tablet nor has any internals like one but still has the best looking design with ultr portability feature.
The MacBook has a 12-Inch LED display which is dominated by the resolution of 2304 by 1440. The internals are packed with a 1.1GHz, dual core Core M Processor which has the potential to turbo boost it to 2.4GHz if it needs an extra hand in the power category. There are no storage variants in the MacBook and every model comes with a 256GB of space and 8GB RAM, making it more advantageous over the 64GB Surface Pro 3.
Apple has chosen a different strategy for it products, making every inch of them to come to mobile because the older version MacBook feels like the ruins of a forgotten era. Hence, change is what? Good! Moving closer to the mobile industry suggests that same applications can be accessed on cross-platform devices. The reason that 12-Inch MacBook is extremely thin is because of its seamless design which had support of the fan-less structure of the internals. This means that the MacBook has no potential to get hot as other notebooks that require a fan to cool down.

The MacBook design is taken from the landmarks of the iPhone as well as the iPad which gives it a stunning yet much lighter look and feel. Most of has great uses for the USB ports and MacBook is not made for them. It only resides a USB type-C port which can be used for multiple ports including Apple’s magsafe technology. The ports are diminished to thin the MacBook and by far, Apple has succeded. The keyboard keys have been altered to use the butterfly hinge rather than scissor which was present in previous stock MacBook design. Another new technology that Apple got its hands on is the Force Touch. The force touch technology is part of the trackpad to eliminate spaces under it and replacing it with a taptic engine that vibrates every time you force tap the trackpad, giving a more press-like feel.
Apple is also investing on new wireless technologies to run cross platform like the Wi-Wi 802.11 ac and Bluetooth 4.0 which are built in to the new MacBook.
MacBook Vs Surface Pro 3, Comparison Concluded

The Surface Pro 3 becomes a bigger purchase when you add on the keyboard and Core i5 processor with 256GB on board storage making it cost $1299. With that stated, the Surface Pro 3 line up is still no match for the MacBook even with a $125 addition. However, the Surface Pro 3 has more versatile design features like outnumbered ports compared to the new MacBook and OS X users would definitely opt for the MacBook. At this point alone, we can say that Microsoft has more hardware advantages than the MacBook. This is all for now, let us know in the comments whats your personal favorite considering utility and design.

    Cumprimentos,

USB Type-C is still susceptible to its predecessor's flaws

It’s been years in the making but USB Type-C finally made its grand entrance this past week on Apple’s new MacBook and Google’s new Chromebook Pixel 2 a day later. While it’s great to finally see the successor to modern-day USB, there’s plenty to keep the security conscious among us up at night.
For starters, we have to be cognizant of the fact that USB Type-C is still based on the USB standard which means it’s still susceptible to all of the same nasty attacks that today’s solutions are. Things like the BadUSB malware aren’t exactly new but what is new is the inclusion of power over USB.
For those not aware, the USB Type-C port combines data and power into a single connection. As The Verge points out, those truly paranoid about exploitation would simply put a piece of tape over their USB port. Now that the port doubles as the power connection, that’s no longer an option.
BadUSB is particularly worrisome as it takes advantage of a fundamental flaw in the way USB works. There are some USB drives that now protect against this flaw but the vast majority of drives and computers remain wide open.
One of the researchers that first uncovered the flaw, Karsten Nohl, said there is no solution even in sight with USB Type-C. That makes sense considering the fact that USB is open and built on the concept of backwards compatibility.
With power being supplied over USB, there now exists the possibility of infecting a charger. Unlike USB sticks, it’s entirely plausible that people will “borrow” a charger from someone in a coffee shop or even a “friend.” Once a system is infected, said infection could spread to every charger the computer comes in contact with, thus casting what could wind up being a massive web of infection.

Apple MacBook has same performance as 2012 Air

You get what you pay for

When the new MacBook came out the Tame Apple press launched a ton of free PR for their favourite company praising how much it looked like Apple's Air.

Now people have got their paws on one they are discovering that the new MacBook has the same performance as the Air, but not the current model the Air which first appeared three years ago. The new 12-inch MacBook, with a Model Identifier or 8,1 actually more than one thing in common with the Air line, particularly in performance has been benchmarked using GeekBench's suite.
The scores from GeekBench submitted to Mashable showed a score of 1924 for the single-core test and 4038 for the multi-core part. This is lower than the performance of the mid-2011 11-inch MacBook, with identifier 4,1. That particular model scored 2023 and 4222 on single and multi core tests, respectively.
The reason is the CPU the 2011 MacBook ran on an Intel Core i7-2677M, a dual-core CPU that ran at around 1.80 GHz. In contrast, the new MacBook has a Core M chip. While the dual-core processor is more recent, it's is clocked at only 1.1 GHz, though a 1.3 GHz option is also offered, for an additional price, of course.
Basically Apple thought that people would not want any extra performance out of their Macbook but they would pay more for the profile and low power draw.
To make matters worse the 2015 MacBook would be outperformed by even the most recent MacBook Air
The new MacBook might have other things going for it: a beautiful design, lightweight and slim profile, a multi-talented though solitary USB Type-C port, and a fancy Force Touch trackpad but if you try to do anything with it, you will be stuffed.
