Nintendo NX might not be as powerful as the PS4

It is pretty evident that one of the reasons why Nintendo Wii U has failed on the market is its low performance and lack of support of high-definition resolutions. While it is very logical for Nintendo to add support for full-HD graphics to its next-generation video game system to be more competitive than its rivals, it will not do so, according to an industry expert.
Nintendo does not have plans to use high-performance hardware for its Nintendo NX video game system, according to a recent tweet by Liam Robertson of Unseen64, who has in the past been accurate with his insider info, reports Ubergizmo. In particular, Nintendo’s next-generation console will not be as powerful as existing consoles from Sony or Microsoft.
“The NX is definitely not aiming to compete with the likes of PS4 on a power level,” said Mr. Robertson. “Absolutely sure of that now.”
Introduced in late 2013, new-generation game systems from Sony and Microsoft can barely offer performance comparable to that of mainstream gaming personal computers nowadays. Not in all cases the consoles can render video games in 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second.

Various executives from Nintendo have always said that graphics processing performance is not the most important thing about game consoles. Instead of installing high-end hardware into its gaming systems, the company believes that it needs to offer unique user experience and distinctive games.
While unique games helped Nintendo to sell tens of millions of Wii consoles, its GameCube and Wii U have never become popular. Therefore, it is surprising that Nintendo does not want to use high-end hardware inside its Nintendo NX system.

Rumor: Nintendo NX to Enter Manufacturing Later this Year – Won’t Be as Powerful as PlayStation 4

Nintendo is keeping a tight lid on all the things related to its upcoming next generation video game console, which is currently only known by its codename; NX. The Japanese platform holder has iterated several times that it won’t talk openly about the new console any time before next year. However, as the rumor machine rolls on, it seems like things may be heating up more quickly for the Wii U’s successor than previously thought. Rumors that recently emerged on the internet suggest that Nintendo NX is to enter manufacturing in October, and that the console won’t be as powerful as the PlayStation 4.

Rumor Claims Nintendo NX Won’t Compete with Sony’s PlayStation 4 in Terms of Power – Expected to Launch in July 2016

Digitimes, a Taipei-based news organization, recently published a report claiming that Nintendo has been paying visits to their supply chain partners lately, and has already signed a new contract with Foxconn Electronics, a Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturing company, to begin pilot production on the new console this year by October “at the latest.” According to Digitimes, this new information was obtained by an inside source. Nintendo NX is expected to debut on or before E3 2016, with a scheduled release for later that year.

However, the report claims that mass production on the upcoming console will start next year in May or June, and that the new system will be possibly see an official launch in July 2016. Once the initial production begins, several other manufacturing companies will likely join in to boost the process. It is still unclear if Nintendo NX will be launched globally in concert or see a gradual roll out, although the report claims that Nintendo is getting ready to ship 20 million consoles in its first year. Of course, all this information comes from a third-party source and no part of it has been confirmed officially.
In another rumor that comes from Liam Robertson of Unseen64, Nintendo is not targeting the hardware capabilities of the eighth generation console that is leading the market right now. He recently Tweeted about the relative power of Nindendo NX, claiming that the new console won’t compete with Sony’s PlayStation 4 in terms of graphical capabilities. You can check out the tweet below. Note that Robertson is known to be a very reliable source when it comes to the inside information. He is the guy who accurately leaked data on Project H.A.M.M.E.R.’s in-game environments, and also revealed that Criterion Games almost created a new F-Zero game.

There have been several different rumors circulating the web since Nintendo NX was first revealed, but the company has only clarified little. These new rumors have seen no official response from Nintendo as of yet, and so, all this new information should be taken lightly. The Japanese platform holder is expected to talk more about the successor to its eighth generation Wii U video game console sometime next year. We can’t be sure of anything said related to the console until then, unless Nintendo decides to speak officially about it.

AMD Is Likely Making The Processor For Nintendo NX – Announces Third Semi-Custom Design Win

Venturebeat reports that there’s strong evidence to suggest that AMD has yet again won a gaming semi-custom chip design. This time around it’s for Nintendo’s forthcoming Nintendo NX game console. It’s a well known fact that AMD had designed and now supplies the processors for all the three major gaming consoles, including the PS4, XBOX ONE and Wii U.
With AMD’s highly successful APU – Accelerated Processing Unit – design combining both x86 CPU cores and a robust graphics engine on a single piece of silicon makes it the ideal solution for compact gaming machines. After the last game console sweep it makes perfect sense that Nintendo would choose AMD for its upcoming gaming system.
AMD Is Likely Making The Processor For Nintendo NX – Announces Third Semi-Custom Design Win

All three major players, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, chose to abandon IBM’s PowerPC architecture in favor of AMD’s x86-64bit in the last round of systems. However this win was actually more heavily influenced by AMD’s strong graphics performance and the way the company can integrate both the CPU and GPU engines on a single chip. Something that IBM cannot do and AMD has far more experience in than its major rivals Intel and NVIDIA.
In its most recent earnings call AMD announced a brand new semi-custom design beyond the two semi-custom chips that the company had announced last year. This means that the company is working on three semi-custom chips. One of the two that were announced last year is x86-64bit based and the other is ARM 64-bit based. AMD confirmed that the latest design win announced in the Q2 earnings call is also x86 based making this the company’s fourth design to incorporate the x86-64bit CPU architecture. The previous two being the XBOX ONE and the PS4 and the third being the one announced last year.
AMD Designed XBOX ONE Semi-Custom APU

AMD’s Devinder Kumar had actually confirmed last year that of the two x86 and ARM semi-custom chips announced last year, one would take the company beyond gaming. In other words, one was going to be a gaming chip. It was widely speculated that the ARM semi-custom chip would end up as the processor that would power Nintendo’s new handheld device, while the x86 chip announced alongside it would be a tailor-made server chip. Today, VentureBeat reports that the third and latest semi-custom chip would actually power Nintendo’s upcoming living room device, the Nintendo NX game console.

Nintendo choosing AMD for the second time goes beyond AMD’s traditional strong points with APUs. It allows Nintendo to maintain backward compatibility with Wii U games on its forthcoming Nintendo NX since both are x86 based. It would also mean that all the developers that worked on games for the Wii U can carry over their experiences to the Nintendo NX without having to go through another learning curve to get familiar with a completely different architecture like ARMv8.
    AMD Designed PS4 Semi-Custom APU

This time around is also quite different for Nintendo. The company’s last design with the Wii U was actually not a semi-custom one. Rather it was based on two embedded processors from AMD. A small x86 CPU and a separate graphics chip, both of which were standard embedded AMD products. This time Nintendo can have a tailor made semi-custom chip setup just the way it wants and can even integrate some of its very own IP blocks.
It’s quite obvious that the Nintendo NX is set to launch during next year’s holiday season. Which makes TSMC’s 16nm FinFET or Samsung’s 14nm FinFET the perfect manufacturing nodes for it rather than the old 28nm node that current console chips are based on. This means that it will actually go head to head with Sony’s and Microsoft’s upcoming console refresh with smaller devices enabled by that very same FinFET technology. The new process will enable AMD to make the processors for these devices a lot smaller and significantly more power efficient. Which would in turn allow for more affordable systems that feature much more compact and sleek designs.
So expect the Nintendo NX to boast a small and sleek form factor as well as an attractive price point. We’ll make sure to bring you the latest on Nintendo’s upcoming gaming device, so stay tuned.

AMD begins development of its third major semi-custom design

Advanced Micro Devices recently started to design its third semi-custom accelerated processing unit for an undisclosed customer. Some believe that this third semi-custom system-on-chip will eventually power Nintendo’s next-generation game console code-named “NX”. However, AMD claims that the new SoC “expands the base” of its semi-custom business beyond gaming, which means that the APU is not developed with a game console in mind.
“We have started a new design this quarter that we believe expands our base for the semi-custom business and we are very pleased with that,” said Lisa Su, chief executive officer of Advanced Micro Devices, during the company’s earnings conference call with investors and financial analysts. “The base semi-custom business is around the game consoles.”

AMD announced two new semi-custom SoC design wins back in October, 2014. Both chips will integrate AMD Radeon graphics, one will be based on ARM architecture, another one will feature x86 general-purpose cores. One of the APUs is projected to power a “beyond gaming device”. Details about another have never been disclosed, but it is possible that it is a SoC for a gaming device. The two semi-custom system-on-chips are projected to bring the company combined total lifetime revenue of approximately $1 billion over approximately three years starting 2016.
Considering relatively short amount of time between the start of development and actual revenue shipments of AMD’s third semi-custom design, it looks like the system-on-chip will not be something very complex. According to comments made by AMD around two years ago, it took it less than 24 months to design, build and tune system-on-chip for Sony PlayStation 4. However, it took years to determine requirements for the SoC as well as its architecture.

The third semi-custom design is expected to bring the first revenue to AMD in the second half of 2016. AMD expects that the addition of this APU will help the company to further grow its semi-custom business.
“I think we will still see 2016 to be a fairly solid year for the traditional, let’s call it game console business, overall,” said Ms. Su. “Then as we layer on top of it some of the new wins, I think that does give us potential to grow in the second half of the year. Obviously, there is a lot to happen between now and then, but I do see semi-custom as a growth driver for us going forward.”

So far, AMD has received around $3 billion in revenue for its semi-custom SoCs that power Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4. The two consoles have been in production for about two years now.
While semi-custom chip business is stable and predictable, something that is important for AMD, which has not been very successful on its traditional PC and server markets in the recent years, it is not very profitable. AMD admitted last year that its console SoCs are sold with 15 – 20 per cent margin, which is considerably below typical margins for fabless semiconductor companies in general and AMD in particular.

Nintendo Patent Filing Shows Sleep Monitor With Vital Sign Health Status Ceiling Projector

A couple of interesting patents owned by Nintendo were published last week, and while it wouldn't have been surprising to see the details relate to the company's upcoming NX console, it actually has to do with something completely different, and unexpected.
According to a post at NeoGAF that dissects the multiple patents, Nintendo is working on a quality-of-life device that sits next to someone's bed, constantly analyzing different variables. It almost looks like a different take on something like Fitbit; Nintendo wants to provide information to the user that will help them get a better night's sleep, and be healthier in general.
What makes the product really interesting is the fact that it has a built-in projector, as seen in the sketch below:
That projector would beam images like the following to the ceiling. Based on certain variables, such as room temperature and pulse, an overall score of sorts would be calculated.
I'd imagine that if a room is too warm, the score would be lower, but if it's comfortable, and the person's pulse/breathing is normal, then a great score would be shown. Why exactly something like that, which is easy to figure out (anyone should know if it's too warm or not!), would need to be beamed to a ceiling, is hard to say. The device could take a look at some variables we're not expecting, though, and it could cater to those who are too busy to stand there and analyze every little thing, if they are QOL conscious.
What I do know for certain is that this is a very interesting product from a company like Nintendo, and I can't help but feel like it'd have the ability to tie-in to future Nintendo software.

First Details Emerge About Nintendo’s “Quality of Life” Device

There has been a great deal of contrasting theories regarding Nintendo’s “Quality of Life” device and its possible relation to the Codename NX project. Recently, a NeoGAF user stumbled upon Nintendo’s WIPO Patent Application WO/2015/107747 which includes schematics about the Quality of Life programme. Unfortunately, the text is in Japanese, so it’s difficult to deduce the technical information within the patent application. However, the diagrams provide a general synopsis of the device’s functionality.

In its most basic form, the Quality of Life device appears to fixate on fitness and trying to improve the user’s overall health. The dock contains sensors to relay information between a number of accessories including a Wii Balance board. Supposedly, the docking station can detect the user’s emotional state through an integrated microphone or webcam. I would also presume that the unit detects movement and begins operating as you enter a room.

The second image suggests the inclusion of a projector designed to gauge an individual’s tiredness. For example, a sensor is used to determine the user’s pulse rate and engagement in mental activities. This projector displays an image onto the ceiling and can be adjusted using a remote control. It’s still unknown what type of image will be displayed but perhaps it’s designed to help people with disturbed sleep patterns. However, it might be a way to save power during a form of entertainment and realize when the end user is asleep.

Finally, a terminal system collates information about each person’s health and sets targets to improve their well-being. Perhaps, the device measures your fat %, weight, heart rate, and other vital aspects. That would make sense given the image appears to show the Wii Fit board being an integral part of the experience.
Whatever the Quality of Life device entails, it’s a major change from Nintendo’s gaming focused market. Perhaps, Satoru Iwata’s poor health and eventual demise made his team reconsider their priorities and try to help extend people’s lives. Traditional fitness is quite boring and engaging people in a new, visual manner to improve their lifestyle could make such a profound difference.
Thank you Nintendo Life for providing us with this information.

Nintendo on NX: It was important for us to recommit to consoles

Although Nintendo confirmed earlier this year that it had begun development of its next-generation video game console code-named NX, it did not reveal any actual details about the forthcoming product. Apparently, the only reason why Nintendo disclosed the fact of development was to tell its customers that it will not exit the market of dedicated game consoles.
“Normally, we wouldn’t have taken that step of telling people we are working on the next system, but we wanted people to know we remain committed to the dedicated game device business,” said Scott Moffitt, executive vice president of sales at Nintendo of America, in an interview with Examiner.
It is not a secret that announcement of a new game console helps to sell existing hardware and software. Keeping in mind that sales of Nintendo Wii U are very slow, the company has clearly failed to make its current system popular, it made a great sense for the company to pre-announce its NX without revealing any details.

It is still unclear when Nintendo plans to release its next-gen system. It is logical to assume that the console will be released in 2016, around four years after Wii U. However, Nintendo does not want to confirm any timeframes. However, it claims that its customers were enthusiastic about the new console.
“Judging by our stock price, the [reaction] was very enthusiastic, but our game fans were also very enthusiastic,” said Mr. Moffitt. “People also respected the fact that we remain committed to making rich, deep experiences that they can enjoy in their living room.”

Para bem da Nintendo esta deveria ser uma consola que atraisse compradores, caso contrario arrisca-se a ser mais uma Wii U virada para o fracasso.

Nintendo NX's games will come on cartridges, no disc drive supported

A new patent filing has unloaded a bevy of new information on Nintendo's mysterious NX console, giving a new perspective on what Nintendo is cooking up for the future. The patent, which was filed in February and just released, describes Nintendo's filing as a "Stationary Game Apparatus, Game Apparatus, Game System, Recording Medium and Speed Control Method".

What we know so far is that the NX won't have a disc drive, that it sports two NAND flash memory banks as well as a primary hard-disk for storage, a processor, and its very own Wii U-like wireless display controller. Rather than relying on Blu-ray discs the console will instead rely on SD memory cards, which herald a nostalgic transition back to the cartridge medium which most of us grew up on. Only instead of the 128MB SNES cards of our youth, the NX will need at least 32-64GB SD cards to keep up with today's demanding games. It's likely that the system will also be buffered by digital games and apps via Nintendo's eShop.

According to the filing, the NX includes "a processor, a first memory, a second memory, an internal HDD (Hard Disk Drive), an image output unit , a communication unit, a wireless communication unit, a power supply unit, an HDD connection unit, a card slot, and a wireless display controller".

No hard specs were delivered about the Nintendo NX's processor, but it's believed that AMD will design the NX's customized APU that will power the system.

FIGURE 1 - "A game apparatus 1 according to the present example embodiment is not provided with a display unit and displays a game screen on a display apparatus 5 such as a liquid-crystal television. The game apparatus 1 is a so-called stationary game apparatus. The game apparatus 1 includes a processor 10, a first memory 11, a second memory 12, an internal HDD (Hard Disk Drive) 13, an image output unit 14, a communication unit 15, a wireless communication unit 16, a power supply unit 17, an HDD connection unit 18, a card slot 19, a controller 3 and the like. The controller 3 is provided exclusively for the game apparatus 1. The controller 3 includes a processor 31, a wireless communication unit 32, an operation unit 33, a display unit 34, a battery 35, a connection unit 36 and the like."

    Nintendo NX basics:

"An example system includes an internal hard disk drive storing a program and/or data, a communication unit transmitting/receiving a program and/or data via a network, and a processor executing a program stored in the hard disk drive to perform game processing. The example system is not provided with an optical disk drive for reading out a program and/or data from an optical disk."

Claim 1: A stationary game apparatus, comprising: an internal hard disk drive storing a program and/or data; a communication unit transmitting/receiving a program and/or data via a network; and a processor executing a program stored in the hard disk drive to perform game processing, wherein the game apparatus is not provided with an optical disk drive.
Claim 2: The stationary game apparatus according to claim 1, comprising a first storage configured of a non-volatile memory, wherein the first storage stores a first program starting to be executed when the game apparatus is started, and the hard disk drive stores a second program starting to be executed after the first program starts to be executed.

    Nintendo NX controller info:

Claim 25: A game apparatus, comprising: a wireless communication unit performing wireless communication with a wireless operation device having an operation unit, a display unit and a battery, and wirelessly transmitting/receiving information concerning an operation accepted by the operation unit and information concerning an image to be displayed on the display unit; and a power supply unit to which the wireless operation device is detachably connected via a power supply line and supplying power to the battery of the wireless operation device via the power supply line.

Be sure to check the parent directory for all the diagrams, claims and information detailed in the patent filing.

Bear in mind that things could change in the final version and the SD card port could simply be for expandable memory rather than game cartridges. Cart support makes a lot of sense for Nintendo as it would allow users to play 3DS and maybe even DS carts on the NX. The patent notes that the cited prototype version "is not provided with an optical disk drive for reading out a program and/or data from an optical disk," but this might change in the shipped consumer system.

Nintendo NX will let you share replays and track high scores

A new patent reveals that Nintendo's upcoming NX system has a unique and rather dynamic sharing functionality that will let users compare and share high scores, achievements and video replays.

The Nintendo NX patent, originally spotted by Nintendo Enthusiast, is pretty beefy, but the general jist of it centers around users comparing their in-game feats. Essentially players will be able to compare each other's scores on a wide network of users, send and receive replay video clips, and check their standings on live leaderboards.

All shared data will consist of a "sheet" of content including high scores (which can be cross-checked with live leaderboards), a grading system (stars, etc), customized user-created messages and drawings (think Miiverse sketches) and the ability to view replay video. All users will be able to share and publish these "sheets" of content. The above picture is a mock-up scheme that servers as an example of a shared post.

According to the patent, the NX will automatically start recording clips when certain conditions are set: "A user creates shared information when the user has cleared a stage or set a new record," which is quite similar to the Xbox One's achievement recording mechanic. Replay data will be viewed on the console's Wii U-like display controller.

Miiverse on NX and network-wide competitions

Digging a bit deeper into the patent reveals even more evidence that the replay function will be a part of MiiVerse, as the patent states that users will be able to include "text input by a user who posted the shared information," and that "shared information may include handwritten characters or illustrations input on the touch-screen display," which is very much like the Wii U's Miiverse that allows players to share sketches and screenshots with one another.

The patent also notes that specific games will use this achievement tracking system to unlock in-game bonuses, pointing to the possibility of network-wide competitions. "The game program may be programmed to perform a predetermined operation when the valuation fulfills a predetermined condition; for example, the game may be programmed to enable the user to play a new mini-game by obtaining a certain number of stars."

Games can also unlock extra content sent through the sharing mechanism: "The game program may also be programmed to enable the user to use certain data available when creating shared information."

Coupled with the recent news that the Nintendo NX will have game cartridges instead of discs, these patent filings are starting to reveal more and more possibilities of what Nintendo's new system will actually be like. So far it appears it'll be an upgraded centralized console with a Wii U-like touchscreen controller, be compatible with other devices like smartphones and PC's, and that it'll sport an APU crafted by AMD.

Nintendo NX has a 60 per cent chance

Now it has lost its toilet naming obsession

An analyst has given Nintendo’s new NX gaming console a 60 per cent chance of success.

Michael Pachter, an industry oracle who has made several successful predictions and analyses in the past which may, or may not, have had something to do with the flight of swallows, or the entrails of a white bull, said the reboot of the Nintendo gaming console could easily reach 30 million installs after its release.
He said that the Nintendo NX could see a 60 percent chance of success and will easily sell 30 million installs right away.
Pachter said that one of the big things in Nintendo’s favour is its 'convergence device' being a hybrid of home and mobile devices.
When launched, the NX will offer an experience completely different from what Xbox One and PS4, which gives it an edge considering it's been two years since the launch of Microsoft and Sony's latest consoles, and they are completely identical.
Nintendo has hinted that it will not be replacing any of the 3DS and Wii U when NX is unboxed, but the plan is to create a machine device that will overpower competitors.
Youth Health Magazine also adds, that along with the launching of the Nintendo NX console will be games such as "Call of Duty," "FIFA" and "Grand Theft Auto." Nintendo is apparently working on EA and Capcom, who lost faith in Nintendo after the Wii failed to match their expectations.
The Wii U did not get GTA and FIFA, and analysts are hoping to see it come into the NX picture lest Nintendo wants to 'fail expectations' once more.

Gaming Industry Analyst Michael Pachter Doesn’t Expect The Nintendo NX to Arrive Next Year

Michael Pachter is possibly the only video game and electronics research analyst known to the public and renowned for making bold claims. As a result, he’s often ridiculed by the gaming community and every prediction he makes isn’t taken seriously. Despite this, Pachter has been talking more business sense of late and making accurate, if fairly generic predictions. During his own show, entitled, Pachter Factor“, Pachter was asked by a Siftd.net user:
“When do you predict the Nintendo NX will be released in the United States?”
    He replied:
“I would say 20% chance it comes out in 2016 in the U.S., 80% chance it comes out in 2017. If you don’t see it before E3, there’s a 0% chance it’s coming out in 2016.”

While he’s not counting out the Wii U’s successor coming in 2016, it seems unlikely and would give the Wii U a respectable 5 year lifecycle. 2016 just seems far too early and Nintendo needs to focus on releasing a superb Zelda game for the Wii U. Although, I’m pretty sure it will also end up on the NX. On another note, we know absolutely nothing about the NX’s specification, form factor, and if Nintendo decides to drop physical media altogether. I hope not given the prices on the digital eShop store. Currently, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are struggling with modern games, so it’s an interesting time for the console market. Nintendo really wants to attract third-party support and this can only be done via serious hardware capable of matching or surpassing the current consoles.

Nintendo Might Miss Their Nintendo NX 20 Million Assembly Target

If a recent report is to be believed, Nintendo might miss their Nintendo NX 20 million assembly target for 2016. The report suggests that component suppliers expect shipments to only reach around 10-12 million units.

Asian news outlet Digitimes, reports that assembly complications with the NX, might prevent Nintendo from reaching their initial assembly target of 20 million units globally for 2016. Digitimes, “the device’s upstream component suppliers expect shipments to only reach around 10-12 million units”.
The new console is estimated to enter mass shipments in the second quarter. In addition to Foxconn, suppliers such as Foxconn Technology, Macronix, Pixart Imaging, Coxon Precise Industrial, Nishoku Technology, Delta Technology, Lingsen Precision Industries and Jentech will also supply components for the device.
The news outlet claims that Foxconn has been chosen as the console’s main manufacturer, and a host of other companies supplying the resources to make Nintendo’s upcoming console.

Nintendo NX might sell as many as 30 million units according Pachter

A few days ago we reported on how Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, believes that the Nintendo NX is some sort of ‘convergence’ device. According Pachter, Nintendo’s console has a 60% chance of succeeding.
I would say modest potential that it bombs. I would give them a 60 percent chance of success, I think they are smart people, I think they have learned a lot from what they did wrong with the Wii U. Are they going to get the Wii magic back? Probably not.
The often criticised analyst adds that he believes that the NX could sell as many as 30 million units.
But if they go back to a conventional-like console, their only problem they have now is they are very late in the cycle so they’re not going to sell that many. Could they sell 30 million? Sure.
Nintendo hasn’t released any details regarding their next console. Back in March of this year, the late Satoru Iwata said that specifics and details about the NX will be revealed in 2016. According Iwata, Nintendo aims to surprise gamers with their console.
