    Surface 3

Microsoft’s Surface 3 tablet runs full version of Windows

Microsoft on Tuesday announced the Surface 3 tablet with Windows 8.1, available in May for a starting price of $499. The latest iPad competitor is designed to be a complete laptop replacement, running full Windows, including desktop applications, and delivering all-day battery life. Surface 3 also includes a quad-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, a significant shift from ARM processors used in previous models.

Surface 3 comes with 64GB storage and 2GB of RAM for $499, while a 128GB option with 4GB of RAM costs $599. Both Wi-Fi only and 4G LTE models are available. The tablet also features a 10.8″ Full HD display at 1,920×1,280 pixels resolution, full-size USB 3.0 port, Mini DisplayPort, microSD card reader, headphone jack, cover port, micro USB charging port, Bluetooth 4.0 and three-position kickstand. The tablet will receive a free upgrade to Windows 10 when available and includes a one-year Office 365 subscription.

The base model Surface 3 in 64GB and 128GB options is available for pre-order now through Microsoft’s website for delivery starting the first week of May, while the 4G LTE models are listed as shipping by June 26th. The tablet includes a 1-year limited hardware warranty. Type Covers are a $130 add-on, and Surface pens are available in blue, red, black, and original silver.
Microsoft’s new Surface 3 joins the existing Surface Pro 3, starting at $799. The professional tablet rivals the MacBook Air with a 12″ Full HD display at 2,160×1,440 pixels resolution, Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processor, up to 9 hours of web browsing, full-size USB 3.0 port, Mini DisplayPort, microSD card reader, two 5-megapixel HD cameras on the front and back, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and more.

Surface 3 review roundup: Honey, I shrunk the Surface Pro

Microsoft's Surface 3 is a major course change for the company's lower-end tablet. ARM processors and Windows RT are out, replaced by an Intel Atom processor and Windows 8.1. The Surface 3 also gets a couple nice features from its bigger brother, like a 3:2 display with a built-in pen digitizer. The first reviews of this new tablet are hot off the presses today, and it seems that Microsoft has mostly made the right changes with its latest Surface.
Reviewers praise the design and build quality of the Surface 3. Tom Warren of The Verge says the Surface 3 "looks beautiful, modern, and premium," and Napier Lopez at The Next Web says "its build quality is just as high-end as the Surface Pro 3 I’ve been using for nearly a year. "
Warren and Lopez are both impressed with the quality of the Surface 3's screen, too. Warren says "the color reproduction is actually better than the Surface Pro 3, and the screen is brighter," while Lopez says "you’ll be hard pressed to find a Windows PC with a better display at this price range."
While the Surface 3 is an x86 PC, its Cherry Trail Atom x7 isn't going to break any speed records. Peter Bright of Ars Technica warns that "this is not a CAD machine or a gaming rig," but he found that "for browsing, common day-to-day chores in Office, and taking notes in OneNote, the processor is up to the task." He benchmarked his Surface 3 (with the optional 4GB of RAM) against the iPad Air 2, and his findings were interesting:
That the Surface 3 gives up performance compared to PCs with hotter, hungrier processors is no surprise. More surprising is that it's giving up a lot of performance relative to the processor in the iPad. The gap isn't too big in multithreaded workloads, with the quad core Atom being in the same ballpark as the tri-core A8X in the iPad Air 2, but in both singlethreaded and GPU workloads, the Apple custom processor is far ahead.
Bright does note, however, that "if you wanted to, you could install, say, Visual Studio on the Surface 3. You can't do that on an iPad, no matter how well it scores in benchmarks."
As for battery life, the results are mixed. Lopez reports that "if you stick with Modern UI apps as much as possible, chances are you’ll have no trouble getting through a full day of work. Once you start loading desktop apps, things are a little iffier." His testing results follow:
With adaptive brightness set to about half intensity (the screen is really bright, so you shouldn’t need more) and Wi-Fi on, a day spent mostly in the touch interface netted me around 8-10 hours of use.
When I spend most of my time using Chrome instead, battery life is closer to the 6-7 hour mark. Throw in some serious Photoshop and Lightroom sessions, and you could be in the realm of 4-5 hours(although my brightness is set higher with those apps).
Another problem is that the Surface 3's price still doesn't include useful accessories like the stylus or Type Cover. Bright tallies up the numbers, and finds that "the $499 base unit with 2GB RAM and 64GB storage has no keyboard, no pen, no dock. They'll cost $129.99, $49.99, and $199.99, respectively."
Overall, the Surface 3 seems to be more useful and compelling than its ARM-based predecessor, while bringing some of the Surface Pro 3's mojo to a lower price point. Time will tell whether consumers respond to the changes.

    Neowin: Surface 3 review

In talking with Microsoft about the Surface 3 review unit they were sending in, they stressed how this is like the Pro 3 but smaller, fanless, and more accessible for consumers with a lower price point. But hearing all of that, and then sliding the 3 out of the box, this prior conversation was awash in my brain.
Inside was a Surface 3 with 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM ($599, full specs), a blue keyboard cover ($129), a dock ($199), and a pen ($49).

I thought, "Hey, this feels like a Surface Pro 3, but smaller" and my brain was right, because that was the point Microsoft set out to establish with the 3. Turning on the tablet fired up the setup process for Windows 8.1, and I forgot how long this process takes as I have gotten used to Windows 10's faster first-run experience. Once I got the machine setup, it' was time to take write down my initial feelings; these are the 'gut' impressions that many will experience when they first touch the device at one of the retail outlets that will sell the Surface 3.
    Read the complete review.

Microsoft’s New Surface 3 Runs With Windows 10

Microsoft’s new Surface 3 will launch on the 5th of May, but some people in the industry already got their hands on the new dual-usable systems. The Surface 3 runs the full version of Windows 8.1 and is said to be working with Windows 10 too once that is released. That’s pretty much a given, but how does it handle the current beta builds?
Pretty good from the looks of it. The guys over at Neowin wanted to know for sure and they tried it out, and the results look promising. The direct update through Windows Update did take quite some time but completed successfully.
There are a few hiccups and things that don’t work yet, but that was to be expected. The onscreen keyboard disappeared during the login password entry, but the Type Cover and the pen both worked well and as they should. A few app crashes were noted too, but nothing too major and no bluescreens. Well, that’s not entirely true, there was an occasionally blue screen that required a tap on the power button to fix after logging in, but no BSODs.
Users who decide to test this for themselves once the Surface 3 arrives should remember to create a backup USB drive in case things go wrong and you need to revert back to the original system. You should also keep in mind that this is a passive cooled system and the update put significant stress on the tiny unit.
Thank you Neowin for providing us with this information

Microsoft Now Selling Surface 3, Provides Surface, Surface 2 Trade-In Program

Back in March, Microsoft introduced the Surface 3 tablet, the company's "thinnest and lightest" Surface tablet to date. The big deal with this device is that it isn't based on Windows RT and an ARM-based chip, but rather the full-blown version of Windows 8.1 and Intel's Atom processor.
Customers can now purchase this tablet and its accessories through the online Microsoft Store, Microsoft's brick-and-mortar stores, and select retailers such as Best Buy and Costco.
In addition to the Surface 3's availability, Microsoft also announced the launch of a trade-in program. For a limited time only, customers with the Surface RT or Surface 2 can bring their tablet into a Microsoft Store and receive up to $150 towards the purchase of a Surface 3. You can also perform the trade-in online by heading here.
Without reading too much into it, this trade-in deal makes it seem as though Microsoft is tacitly acknowledging that earlier Windows RT Surface devices need to be replaced. Windows RT was a colossal failure for Redmond, and although Surface devices themselves proved to be high-enough quality, Microsoft has clearly moved on from Windows RT/ARM. So much so, in fact, that it wants to get older Surface devices off the streets and put the hot new Surface 3 into as many willing hands as possible.
Here's how it works: First, customers select the tablet they currently own: the Surface RT (2012), the Surface 2 (2013) or the Surface 2 with 4G (2013). Next, customers must appraise their device. Is it working? Is the customer trading in accessories? Click the "working" choice, and customers will see a pop-up explaining what qualifies as "working." For example, the screen must not have cracks or dead pixels, and the cursor must respond normally to touch.
Once consumers answer all the questions, they click the calculate button. As an experiment, we chose "working," selected the power adapter and touch cover keyboard and selected 64 GB for the capacity. This produced a $100 redemption code that could be applied to the Surface 3 purchase. Of course, it's up to Microsoft to determine the exact condition and the final value, which they will do when the tablet is in their hands. Once the tablet has been evaluated, the company will send a promo code by email. Simply use this code when purchasing the Surface 3.
To celebrate the launch of the Surface 3, Microsoft is also offering a 10 percent discount to students who are looking to purchase the Surface 3 or other Microsoft products.
Microsoft is selling the Surface 3 in two configurations: 64 GB of internal storage with 2 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage with 4 GB of RAM. Both models include a 10.8-inch ClearType display with a 1920 x 1280 resolution and support for the Surface Pen. Backing this screen is an Intel quad-core Atom x7-Z8700 (Cherry Trail) processor (1.6 GHz, 2.4 GHz burst) and a battery promising up to 10 hours on a single charge. Other hardware details include an 8MP camera on the back, a 3.5MP camera on the front and Wireless AC connectivity.
To purchase the Surface 3, head here. The Wi-Fi-based model with 64 GB of storage and 2 GB of RAM costs $499. For $100 more, customers can purchase the 128 GB / 4 GB RAM / Wi-Fi model. There's also two 4G LTE models that are listed as "coming soon."
The Surface 3 Type Cover costs an additional $129.99.

Microsoft Surface 3 Review: Capability And Compromises

Microsoft's third iteration of the Surface Pro was a monumental improvement over the first two incarnations. For many, the third time really was the charm. It was powerful enough to replace most laptops, and versatile enough to serve as two device types without major compromises on either side. A year later now, and Microsoft presents us with the third iteration of the standard Surface. You know, the one without the "Pro" dangling from the end. It's cheaper, slimmer, and toned down, but it's also aimed at a broader swath of consumers.
The base Surface 3 checks in at an alluring $499, but that's probably not the machine you'll want. The upgraded spec, which gets 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, goes for $599. Plus, you'll probably want a Type Cover, which is another $130. Before you know it, it's pretty easy to push what seems like an entry-level machine into mid-range territory north of $700. At any rate, let's look at what's inside.

    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...hotos_4785.jpg

But before you dive into the specs and our detailed analysis, let's take you on a quick guided tour of the Surface 3 in action...

    image: http://hothardware.com/article_helpe...s/features.gif
    Microsoft Surface 3

    Camera 3MP front-facing camera; 8MP rear-facing camera
    Memory & Storage 2GB or 4GB of RAM (DDR3-1600)
64GB or 128GB eMMC Flash storage
    microSD card slot
    I/O Ports 1 x Full-size USB 3.0
    1 x Mini Display port
    Headset jack
    microUSB charging port

    Bluetooth 4.0
    Battery Up to 10 hours
Weight 1.37 pounds (without Type Cover)
MSRP Base Price: $500 / As Tested: $730

The Surface 3 is no doubt super light, and very versatile, with it's convertible approach and stylus pen support, but there's a premium placed on these features. Microsoft knows that you can save money by buying a single device rather than two, and its pricing does bare that out. Still, there are indeed niceties and conveniences that come with consolidating your computing usage onto one ultra-mobile device. The question is, is the Surface 3 the device to do it? Let's find out in the pages ahead.

Microsoft launching Surface 3 4G LTE this week

Microsoft has officially announced a launch date for its Surface 3 with 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) modem, confirming that it will appear at UK retailers at the end of the week.

Announced as part of the launch line-up but with no firm release date, the Surface 3 (4G LTE) - to give the tablet model its official name - is identical to the existing Surface 3 Windows 8.1 tablets in all but one respect: as the name suggests, it includes an integrated 4G modem for on-the-go data access. 'The ability to stay connected wherever you roam (assuming a mobile broadband signal – thank you lawyers) is a powerful addition to a device that is already incredibly versatile,' Microsoft's Brian Hall joked in the announcement this morning.

The Surface 3 (4G LTE) has already launch, of course, appearing in Japan two weeks ago via a partnership with local network Y!Mobile. Microsoft had kept the launch reasonably quiet, however, as it was loath to confirm international availability - until today, when it has opened the kimono to announce the UK launch on the 3rd of July, just two days away. Interestingly, this launch - along with a simultaneous launch in Germany - comes ahead of other regions including Microsoft's native North America, which will get the hardware 'in the coming weeks' along with France and Spain.

The Surface 3 (4G LTE) will be sold in the UK via O2, which has yet to confirm formal pricing beyond promising that business customers will be able to pick up the base 64GB variant for £50 on a £27.67 per month contract; no pricing has yet been provided for the 128GB variant, nor has Microsoft - which Hall describes as 'focused on business availability' initially - confirmed availability or pricing for SIM-free retail editions.

Microsoft Surface 3 LTE Skips Windows 10 Launch, Arrives On AT&T Friday With Windows 8.1

Perhaps Microsoft and AT&T didn’t want the announcement to get lost in the hoopla surrounding the launch of Windows 10 next Wednesday, but the 4G LTE version of the Surface 3 tablet is set to bow this Friday, July 24th. Microsoft first announced the Surface 3 with LTE back in late March, and told us at the time that the device would ship before the end of the summer.
The Surface 3 with LTE is tied to AT&T’s network and will be priced at $599. That price will get you an Intel Atom processor with 2GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, and a 10.8-inch 1080p display. Interestingly enough, opting for a two-year contract won’t knock much off the price of the tablet, as you’ll still pay a hefty $499. AT&T is, however, offering customers the chance to purchase the tablet for $399 with the purchase of any Lumia smartphone tied to a NEXT plan.

Yet another option is to purchase the Surface 3 for $0 down and pay $30 per month with the AT&T Tablet Installment plan.
Given that the Surface 3 with LTE will launch on Friday, it will ship with Windows 8.1 instead of Windows 10. You’ll also receive a free one-year subscription to Office 365 and 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage. And while the Surface 3 with LTE will miss the July 29th debut of Windows 10, you’ll still be able to download the operating system for free.
In our own testing of the Surface 3, we found it to be an impeccably built tablet that is hampered by its Atom processor and sluggish SSD. It also doesn’t help that the device is quite pricey and that add-ons like the Type Cover, Touch Cover, and Stylus can quickly balloon the tablet’s price tag. $599 for an LTE tablet with 64GB of storage may be a tough pill for some to swallow, but we can at least take solace in the fact that onboard microSD slot can accommodate at least 128GB of additional storage.

Microsoft Surface 3 LTE Now Available On AT&T, T-Mobile Joins Festivies July 31st

Earlier this week, we learned that Microsoft’s Surface 3 LTE would be heading to AT&T’s network. And right on schedule, AT&T has opened up sales of the tablet which is available in a 64GB configuration (which we already knew about) and a 128GB configuration (which was news to us).
Those that purchase a Surface 3 LTE at full price from a Microsoft Store or authorized retail partners will receive an unlocked device that can be used either on AT&T or T-Mobile’s wireless network in the United States. Speaking of T-Mobile, the Surface 3 LTE will also be available to T-Mobile business customers through the company’s @Work channel.

Adding LTE to a Surface 3 doesn’t come cheap. The 64GB Surface 3 LTE runs $599 off-contract, while the 128GB version will cost you $699. Signing up for a two-year contract on AT&T will only knock $100 off those prices (and will result in you receiving a device that is carrier-locked), so we see little reason to opt for that route.
“Surface 3 brings the best of Surface Pro 3 in a compact and affordable package, and the 4G LTE version will be a great fit for a lot of people who need to stay connected beyond the reach of Wi-Fi,” said Brian Hall, General Manager for Microsoft’s Surface business. “I’m excited to see the availability of the Surface 3 (4G LTE) growing and will provide future updates as we have them.”
For those that need a refresher, the Surface 3 features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom x7 Z8700 with either 2GB or 3GB of RAM, a superb 10.8-inch 1920x1280 display, microSD slot, full-size USB 3.0 port, 3MP front- and 8MP rear-facing cameras, Bluetooth 4.0, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The 1.37-pound tablet Surface 3 LTE ships with Windows 8.1, but qualifies for a free upgrade to Windows 10 (which launches on July 29th).
