In Win's transforming H-Tower gets a release date and price tag

We first saw In Win's gloriously ostentatious H-Tower transforming E-ATX case at this summer's Computex. This week at CES, In Win revealed when potential buyers will be able to get an H-Tower of their own and the price they'll pay for the privilege. You may want to sit down before continuing.
Ringing in at a whopping $2,399.99, the H-Tower is simply in a league of its own. Even the other products in In Win's vaunted Signature line don't even come close. I suppose if you're selling a case that has built-in lasers to outline its safe operating area, you can charge as much as you want. Buyers for whom the H-Tower is something they can't live without won't have to wait much longer, either. This case will be released next month in silver-and-black or black-and-red color schemes.

Phanteks Showcases Ambitious Project 916 Concept Case

The Phanteks Project 916 is a large and utterly beautiful prototype case that the company is using to showcase all of the features that they envision for high-end enthusiast-class cases. Aesthetically, it represents a clear evolution of the design first introduced on the Enthoo Primo.

Don't take my word for it though, check out Dmitry's one-on-one video with this gorgeous case:

The fact that the curved piece on the right hand side is a single piece of aluminium is pretty spectacular. The whole left side being tempered glass broken up only by a ventilated mid-section is also pretty striking.

Although it is indeed very large, that the Project 916 can hold a dual system configuration, with a mini-itx motherboard mounted on the floor of the top chamber, is also very cool. This secondary system even has its own rear I/O panel cutout and room for a dual-slot expansion card.

The large dimensions certainly comes in handy when it comes to handling numerous cooling components, with dedicated space for a front-mounted 360mm radiator, a 480mm radiator on the top, and room for giant reservoirs and multiple pumps.

The bottom chamber houses the power supply and up to six hard drives or SSDs. In a dual system configuration, it is also where you can install the Phanteks Power Splitter, which is a device that allows you to use one PSU to power two separate systems. If you're trying to power a single high-end setup, you can instead use the Phanteks Power Combo, which allows two power supplies to be combined into one virtual larger PSU. Take a peak at the video below to get a better understanding of exactly how these ingenious gadgets work:

Lian Li shows off DK-04 sit/stand desk with PC enclosure

We have often been impressed when we see modders build their PC systems into a desk and now, it doesn’t require the custom work as Lian Li has its own line of desks with PC enclosures. This week, Lian Li showed off the DK-04, its latest desk with a PC enclosure.
Not only can the DK-04 have a PC built into it but it is also adjustable to allow a user to set it at a height for sitting down or raise it in case you wanted to stand up.

The desk comes with a tempered glass surface and can raise or lower at the push of a button. The desk can fit in a lot of high-end hardware as well, with room for a custom water cooling setup, though there is only one dual-slot expansion so you would be limited to one GPU, according to PCPer, who got to see the desk at CES.
There is a decent front panel with 4 USB 3.0 ports and room for a 5.25 inch drive. Finally, there is a control panel, which controls the height adjustments and has four presets.
There isn’t any information on pricing or availability just yet but this is certainly interesting to see.

EVGA Shows Off Prototype Gamer Case

EVGA have showcased a new prototype gaming case that targets the high-end of the market with an emphasis on liquid cooling and multi-GPU configurations, while aiming for mainstream price points.

While EVGA introduced a number of concrete products at CES 2016, they also took the opportunity to show off some prototypes that were still a work in progress, like the Gaming Case. This is a large - very large in fact - case that was designed with the enthusiast gamer in mind. As such, it puts a very heavy emphasis on custom liquid cooling capabilities and support for 4-way SLI. Despite its lofty ambitions, this case should retail for about $79 for the basic model and under $150 for the flagship edition that will come decked out with every feature.

Take a look at Dmitry's video overview of the EVGA Gaming Case:

While the exterior design lines are essentially set in stone, the colour might be tweaked a little before launch. The model featured in the above video has a plastic exterior shell that seemed to underwhelm Dmitry, but there will supposedly be a higher-end model with an aluminium exterior pieces and even a different fan controller with a touch panel LCD screen.

The front fascia features an angular air intake grill that extends to the top of the case. The whole front panel is on a hinge, so it can be easily opened all the way down to reveal the three front 120mm or two 140mm fans, and it provides an easy way to clean the front dust filter.

While the left side of the case features a huge window, the design element that really catches the eye are the large mirror strips on the right side of the case and on the bottom chamber. This lower half actually features a built-in fan controller, and it also comes with a sizeable and somewhat unsightly LED display that indicates fan speeds. This area is also where all of the front-panel buttons and ports are located, which is a very daring choice. There is also features a rear chamber with a door that gives you access to the motherboard's rear I/O panel.

The Gaming Case - which we are sure will get a less generic name before it is released - will be available sometime in 2016.

    Review: SilverStone Milo ML08

    Introduction

If we had to build a new PC for home use in 2016, there's a good chance it would adopt the mini-ITX form factor. The availability of compact components is getting better all the time and there's enough happening in the small-form factor space to make this an opportune moment to build something significantly smaller than your traditional tower.
Any such project needs to start with a suitable chassis, and industry veteran SilverStone reckons it has a noteworthy option in the form of Milo ML08. Currently available at a cost of around £70, this super-slim enclosure promises to deliver high-end performance in a form factor that's sleek, portable, and usable in either horizontal or vertical orientations.
Measuring a mere 87mm thick, Milo ML08 has an internal volume of only 12 litres but claims to be versatile enough to function as a vertical workstation, a horizontal HTPC or a powerful gaming rig that can be transported to LAN parties with ease. Sounds useful, and in practise it manages to pull off these feats, though there are inevitably a few minor niggles to contend with.
The first is the busy-looking exterior which, despite being considerably sleeker than the gamer-centric Raven RVZ02, still isn't quite as elegant as we'd hoped. On the other hand, you might appreciate the industrial aesthetic, which includes large clip-on dust filters on the side vents and a removable, rugged-looking handle on top. If you're willing to go without the latter, a handle-less model is also available, and there are plans to introduce variants equipped with side windows.

There are plenty of good ideas, but as you might expect at this price point, implementation isn't always perfect. The side filters, for example, do a good job but are made of plastic and you wonder how long it'll take for one of the fastening clips to fall away. We have mixed feelings about the width-adjustable stands, too - they are useful to have, and we like the fact they are cushioned beneath, but the adjustment mechanism isn't great and the stands don't always stay in place.
SilverStone keeps the chassis well vented - there are vents on the top, bottom and sides - and we like the fact that the front fascia is kept free of clutter. The I/O ports include two USB 3.0 ports and a pair of audio jacks, and these, along with the power and reset buttons, are tucked away behind an translucent sliding cover. Nitpicking somewhat, we'd prefer this cover to be opaque, so users could completely block out the power and activity LEDs. That's something that could easily be modded, and anyone seeking a clean HTPC solution should appreciate the Milo ML08's stealthy exterior - there's not even any branding, though SilverStone does include a stick-on logo should you want one.

This isn't a chassis you're likely to delve into on a regular basis, so there are no quick-release side panels or even thumb screws for tool-free panel removal. Instead, the outer frame is constructed of two L-shaped panels that wrap around the steel central frame and are fixed in place by half-a-dozen screws. Taking them off isn't too much trouble, but getting them realigned requires a little patience.
When inside, the first thing you'll notice is that there are no chassis fans and no fan-mount locations. Instead, the small amount of available room has been dedicated entirely to housing all of the components you'd expect in a high-performance, modern-day PC. SilverStone provisions for a mini-ITX motherboard, an SFX PSU, up to two SSDs and a graphics card measuring up to 330mm in length.

Despite the tight confines, building into the chassis is mostly straightforward and there are a couple of nice touches that help ease the process. The SSD bays, for example, are tool-free trays that sit on a hinged mechanism that allows for each tray to be tilted up when drives are being inserted. A power-supply cable is also pre-routed to the back of the case, and the only immediate limitation is that you can't use an existing ATX unit. Milo ML08's thin profile will only allow for an SFX or SFX-L supply, and we're using SilverStone's own modular SX-500LG for our test build. Note that the PSU power switch isn't accessible once the covers are back on, so remember to turn it on before you secure the panels.
CPU cooler height is restricted to just 58mm, so you'll need to pick carefully should you opt for a custom heatsink, but on the whole there are no major issues installing a mini-ITX board, SSDs and a compatible PSU. SilverStone even includes a securing bracket for the latter, ensuring the PSU doesn't move about when carrying the chassis from a to b, and there's even space next to the 2.5in trays for a slim optical drive.

Flipping the case over reveals a dedicated section for your graphics card of choice. Said card can occupy up to two slots and there's room enough for, say, a GTX 980 Ti. There may, however, be good reason to select a shorter card, as SilverStone has included a third drive-mounting location back here for either a 2.5in or 3.5in disk. Our compact MSI Radeon R9 270X leaves plenty of space, making it easy to add a spacious hard disk should the need arise.
How does the graphics card work when it doesn't appear to be connected to anything? The pictures are deceiving, as there's a two-part PCIe riser included in the bundle, allowing the graphics card to reach the motherboard with minimal fuss. Covering all bases, SilverStone also includes another securing bracket to keep the graphics card as still as possible during transport.
    Toda a review:

    SilverStone Displays Early Mini-STX Enclosure

SilverStone had an early enclosure on display at CES for the upcoming Mini-STX standard, the tiny form-factor introduced with Intel's "5x5" motherboard (which we first reported on almost exactly one year ago).

The simple black metal enclosure (as yet unnamed) looked and felt like a production unit, but we are still in the early stages with the first mini-STX motherboards being announced only this week. No details were given on when it would be available for purchase, or exactly how much it will cost.

It is interesting to note the enclosure's I/O, which should indicate the standard for the new motherboards. On the front panel we had openings for a standard USB and Type-C port, and 3.5 mm audio; around back there were two more USB ports, LAN, DisplayPort, and HDMI. To the left of the HDMI port you can see the power input for the external power supply, as mini-STX will have a lot in common with the thin mini-ITX standard. (Thin mini-ITX optionally supported internal PSUs, but given the space constraints it looks like the mini-STX boards will be using a laptop style power supply.)

The tiny Mini-STX enclosure fits easily in one hand
We will await any official announcement of this (and any other) upcoming mini-STX enclosure from SilverStone.

Phanteks Unveils Eclipse P400 Series Mid-tower Cases

Phanteks unveiled its new Eclipse P400 series mid-tower cases. Pictured below, are the P400 and the P400S (the "S" denotes silent). Designed for the contemporary gaming PC build, which lacks the need for vast drive cages up front, including 5.25-inch bays, the P400/S serve up room for long graphics cards, 360 x 120 mm radiators at the front, 240 x 120 mm radiators at the top, and clear acrylic windows with optional RGB LED lighting.

While the lighting is optional, an LED on/off switch comes standard issue. Storage areas include a two each of 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drive bays. The P400S comes with a cover for the top vents, additional sound-proofing material, and a 3-speed fan-controller. The P400 is priced at US $70, while the P400S is priced at $80. The two go on sale in February, 2016.

Phanteks Also Intros Enthoo Evolv ATX Tempered Glass Edition

For those wanting a groovy, metal-tinted glass finish on their cases, Phanteks has an option. The company launched the Enthoo Evolv ATX Tempered Glass Edition, a variant which features tinted, tempered-glass panels on both sides of the cases. The panels cover the entire area of the side panels, and stay in place with thumb-screws. The rest of its feature-set remains consistent with the company's best-selling case. Phanteks is pricing the case at US $190, it hits the shelves in March, 2016.

Phanteks Unveils a Pair of Dual-System Cases

Phanteks unveiled a large variant of its flagship case, the Enthoo Primo, keeping up with the community's newfound love for two machines in a box, the Enthoo Primo Dual-System. The case serves up room for an E-ATX motherboard tray right where you'd expect it to be, and a second mini-ITX motherboard tray along the base of the case, with its two add-on card slots arranged perpendicular to the base.

A smart Power-Splitter device is included, which lets you share a common PSU with both your machines, which powers down the PSU only when both machines are shut-down, and fires it back up when either or both machines are powered up. Taking this concept a little further (read: bigger), the company also unveiled a prototype case it calls "Project 916," which is made of premium materials such as aluminium and tempered glass; RGB ambient lighting, and gobs of room for your liquid-cooling madness. The Enthoo Primo Dual-System will be available in March 2016, priced at $260. Phanteks is looking at a Q3-2016 launch for Project 916.

    Lian Li's PC-Q04 Hits U.S. Shelves For $59

Lian Li's fanless PC-Q04 chassis is making its way to U.S. store shelves for a friendly $59.
Lian Li announced that it is bringing its tiny PC-Q04 chassis to the U.S. This is no ordinary chassis, however, as it is not only a Mini-ITX case, it also doesn’t come with any case fans and is made entirely from aluminum (like all of Lian Li’s cases).
Inside the case is room for a very simple system. Next to the Mini-ITX board, users can mount an ATX power supply, and below there is room for a dual-slot graphics card. Be careful though – the graphics card can be only 190 mm long. For CPU coolers, there is room for units no taller than 70 mm due to the placement of the power supply.

The top of the chassis has room for either two 2.5” drives or one 2.5” drive and one 3.5” drive. The bottom of the chassis has room for either a 2.5” drive or a 3.5” drive, or if you really need the cooling, a 120 mm or 140 mm fan.
Because of this design, the cooling in the system depends on natural convection combined with the forces of the CPU cooler, PSU, and graphics card fans. However, the case is rather open; the bottom and side panels have open meshes, which means that although natural convection can do its work, there is no noise isolation. When picking hardware, keep an eye out for low-noise parts.

The PC-Q04 is 194 x 294 x 210 mm (WxHxD), and it weighs in at just 1.33 kg when empty.
Pricing for the little PC-Q04 sits at just $59, making this one of the more affordable cases that Lian Li makes. If you want one in silver, that option will be available, too.
Update, 1/13/2016, 9:52am PT: Corrected PSU format to ATX.
